        In Vitro Antiviral Activity of Ribavirin Against Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome Virus Myung Jin LEE1, Kye-Hyung KIM1, Jongyoun YI2, SuJin CHOI1, Chung-Jong KIM1, Nak- Hyun KIM1, Kyoung-Ho SONG1, Pyoeng Gyun CHOI1, Ji-Hwan BANG1, Wan Beom PARK1, Eu Suk KIM1, Sang-Won PARK1, Hong Bin KIM1, Nam Joong KIM1, Myoung- Don OH1 Seoul National University College of Medicine, Korea1, Pusan National University School of Medicine, Korea2 Background: Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging infectious disease caused by a novel Bunyavirus, severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV). No effective antiviral therapy is proven yet, but clinical use of ribavirin (RBV) has been tried. We investigated the antiviral effect of RBV against SFTSV in vitro. Methods: To test for cytotoxicity of RBV, Vero cells were treated with different concentrations of RBV (3.90 to 500 μg/mL, two-fold dilution) and analyzed by cell viability MTS assay 48h post-infection. To determine antiviral activity of RBV against SFTSV, Vero cells were infected with SFTSV strain Gangwon/Korea/2012 at 100 TCID50 (50% tissue culture infective dose) per well in a 96-well plate, and RBV was added at the concentrations showing no or minimal cytotoxicity. Viral RNAs were extracted from the culture supernatants and quantifi ed using one-step real-time reverse transcription- PCR to amplify the partial large segment of SFTSV. Statistical analysis was done by one-way ANOVA with Tukey`s post hoc test. Results: Cytotoxicity due to RBV was not observed at RBV concentration =31.3 μg/ mL. Viral RNAs at 24h post-RBV treatment were reduced with increasing RBV concentrations (1-32 μg/mL), compared with those of mock-treated cells (P <0.01, Figure). Half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of RBV was 3.69 μg/mL at 24h post-RBV treatment. Conclusions: Our study shows that RBV has antiviral effect against SFTSV in a dose-dependent manner. Further studies are required to evaluate the effi cacy of RBV in SFTS.

        特用資源植物의 硏究 : 한국임학회지에 게재된 논문을 중심으로 Based on the Articles Published in the Journal of Korean Forestry

        한국임학회지 (1962년의 1호~2002년의 91권 6호)에 게재된 특용자원식물 관련 논문에서 식·음용식물, 약용식물, 사료식물, 조경식물, 섬유식물, 산업용식물 및 밀원식물로 분류하고 그 내용에 따라 입지환경, 생태, 생리, 번식, 조림(또는 무육, 재배), 유전·육종, 분류(또는 식별), 병·충해와 방제, 동물피해와 방제, 성분분석, 식생정보, 생물공학, 경영·경제 및 총설로 나누었다. 총 1,434편의 발표 논문 중 유용식물자원을 대상으로 한 논문은 27.6%를 차지하는 396편이었고, 내용은 식생정보 60편(15.2%), 생리 56편(14.1%), 유전·육종 56편(14.1%), 번식 53편(13.4%) 및 생태 37편(9.3%)이었다. 조림(무육·재배)은 11편(2.8%)으로 특용자원식물의 규모경영이 이루어지지 않고 있음을 시사하고 있으며, 이것은 경영·경제 분야가 6편(1.5%)인 것과 맥을 같이 하고 있었다. 연구대상 식물은 잣나무(42편), 아까시나무(23편), 밤나무(14편) 및 은행나무(14편) 순으로 높았고, 이 식물들과 관련한 연구내용은 번식, 생리, 유전·육종, 생태 및 병·충해 순이었다. 연구의 목적, 내용, 결과 및 대상식물 등을 고려하여 보면, 1) 초본식물에 대한 보다 많은 연구, 2) 타산업 또는 학분 분야와의 공동연구, 3) 자원 보전적 연구 및 4) 연구주체자 간의 연구결과의 공유 등이 매우 요망된다. The articles, published in the Journal of Korean Forestry from Number 1(1962) to number 6, Volume 91(2002), were surveyed and investigated for the research trend analysis about resource-plants for special use or purpose, i.e edible plants, medicinal plants, feed resource, landscape plants, fiber plants, industrial usage, and bee plants. If the purpose or subject matter of the research was construction or furniture timber production, mushrooms and/or pulp and Paper, such research was not included in this study. These articles were classified again depending on the content of research into 14 categories : habitat environment, ecology, physiology, propagation, silviculture(tending and culture), genetics and breeding, identification, insect and disease control, animal-related research, cemponent analysis, vegetation survey, biotechnology, management, and review. Among the total 1,434 articles published, 396 ones (27,6%) were related with plants for special use or purpose. Vegetation survey was 60(15.2%) ; physiology 56(04.1%) ; genetics and breeding 56(14.1%) ; propagation 53(13.4%) ; and ecology 37(9.3%). Siviculture research field included 11 articles (2.8%), which indicates that the management of resource-plants is to far from economic income as seen in the low number of management research filed articles, i. e., only 6 reports(1.5%). Korean white Pine was most popular for research and included 42 articles ; Robinia pseudoacacia 23 Castanea crenata 14 : and ginkgo tree 14, Research related with these species had focused mainly or propagation, physiotogy, genetics and breeding, ecology and pest control. Based on this survey and analysis, the followings are suggested : 1. More research is required on forest herbaceous plants. 2. Cooperative research work with other industrial and/or scientific area is recommendable for commercialization including medicine, cosmetics, and food etc. 3. Research resource-plant conservation. which includes biology, social education and policy, should be supported for next generation. 4. Mutual correspondence and information exchange about the research results between researchers and institutes is more necessary than now.

        한국 고인골에 남은 질병의 흔적

        현재까지 많은 발굴조사가 실시되었으나, 시대별 또는 지역별로 유의미하게 활용할 수 있는 과거의 인체 정보는 미미하다. 이것은 연구 가능한 상태의 인골이 잔존하기 어려운 한국의 매장환경에 기인한 결과이겠지만, 고인골에 대한 의학적 연구가 폭넓게 진행되지 못했다는 점도 방증한다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 고고학과 의학의 융합연구는 다양한 가능성을 보여주었고, 대중적으로도 큰 주목을 받았다. 6세기 전후 사망한 창녕 송현동 15호분 출토 순장 인골, 7세기 전반에 사망한 익산 쌍릉 출토 인골, 16세기 후반 사망한 안동 가곡리 회곽묘 출토 미라, 17세기 중반 사망한 문경 진성이낭 묘 출토 미라 등이 좋은 사례이다. 그리고 다공성뼈과다증, 치아의 사기질저하증, 광범위특발성뼈과다증, 죽상동맥경화증, 복달렉탈장 등의 질병이 보고되었다. 과거의 사람과 삶을 복원하는 연구가 더욱 진전되기 위해서는 고고학과 의학 분야가 긴밀히 협업할 수 있는 체계가 마련되어야 한다. 앞으로 이와 같은 노력은 식생활, 질병(팬데믹), 이주 등 고대사회가 변동했던 역동적인 요인들을 규명하는 데 토대가 될 것이다. Although many excavations have been carried out, there is very little information about the human body in the past that can be used meaningfully. This is due to the burial environment in Korea, where it is difficult for human bones to remain in a researchable state, and it also proves that medical research on excavated human bones is insufficient. Nevertheless, the convergence researches of archeology and medicine showed various possibilities and received great attention from the public. Good examples are the human bones excavated from tomb no.5 of Songhyeon-dong in Changnyeong, who died around the 6th century, the human bones from Twin Tombs in Iksan, who died in the first half of the 7th century, the mummy from gagok-ri in Andong, who died in the late 16th century, and the mummy from Jinseong Yi’s tomb in Mungyeong, who died in the mid-17th century. And diseases such as porotic hyperostosis, enamel hypoplasia of tooth, diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis, and atherosclerosis were reported. In order to further advance the study of restoring people and lives in the past, a system in which archaeology and medicine can closely collaborate should be established. Such efforts will serve as a basis for identifying the factors that change ancient societies such as diet, disease (pandemic), and migration.

        상악 매복 견치와 관련된 석회화 치성낭

        A 35-year-old man was referred to the department of Oral and maxillofacial surgery of Chonnam university hospital for the chief complaint of asymptomatic swelling on the buccal vestibule of upper right canine area. Radiographs revealed that the upper right canine was impacted and there was a well-circumscribed pericoronal radiolucency related with the canine. Multiple radiopaque foci were scattered in the radiolucent lesion, and the roots of the lateral incisor and the first premolar related to the lesion showed external resorption. The radiographic features of this lesion were typical of adenomatoid odontogenic tumor, but considering the gender and age of the patient, the tentative diagnosis was made as calcifying odontogenic cyst. Microscopically this lesion was diagnosed as calcifying odontogenic cyst, Because calcifying odontogenic cyst has no pathognomonic feature of radiographs, to consider radiographic features with clinical findings is necessary in order to establish more correct diagnosis.(Korean J Oral Maxillofac Radiol 2000; 30: 223-227)

        Soft chelating irrigation이 GP/AH Plus로 충전된 근관의 sealing ability에 미치는 영향에 대한 평가

        본 연구의 목적은 glucose leakage test를 이용하여 soft chelating irrigation이 근관 충전의 sealing ability에 미치는 영향을 평가하는 것이다. 발치된 45개의 단근치를 수집하여 치관부를 잘라내 치근이 총 13mm가 되게 하였다. 근관은 K3 NiTi 구동 기구를 사용하여 성형하고 #45/.06 taper까지 확대하였다. 3개의 실험군(n=13)과 2개의 대조군(n=3)으로 나누었다. 실험군은 다음의 세척 방법으로 처리하였다. 1군, 2.5% NaOCl로 세척; 2군, 2.5% NaOCl로 세척 후 17% EDTA로 최종 세척; 3군, 2.5% NaOCl과 15% HEBP 혼합 용액으로 세척, 근관은 gutta-percha와 AH Plus를 사용하여 측방가압으로 충전하였다. , 습도 100%에서 7일 동안 보관하고 glucose leakage model을 이용하여 치관부로부터 치근부 방향의 미세누출을 정량화하였다. 1, 4, 7, 14, 21, 28일 째 누출된 glucose의 농도를 spectrophotometry로 측정하였다. 분석 결과 모든 실험군에서 실험 기간 동안 누출이 증가하는 경향이 있었다. HEBP처리군은 실험 기간 동안 EDTA처리군과 유의한 차이를 보이지 않았다. HEBP처리군은 21일 이후부터 도말층으로 덮인 NaOCl처리군에 비해 유의하게 낮은 누출을 보였다. HEBP로 처리된 상아질은 EDTA로 처리된 상아질과 비슷한 양상의 폐쇄를 보였으나 도말층이 남아있는 상아질보다는 우수한 sealing ability를 나타냈다. 그러므로 약한 킬레이트제인 HEBP는 EDTA의 대안이 될 수 있을 것이다. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of soft chelating irrigant on the sealing ability of root fillings by using a glucose leakage test. A total of 45 single-rooted teeth were selected for the study. The teeth were decoronated leaving a total length of 13mm. The root canals prepared using K3 NiTi rotary instruments to an apical dimension of size 45(0.06 taper). The specimens were then randomly divided into 3 experimental groups of 13 roots each and 2 control groups of 3 roots each. Specimen in each group were prepared with different irrigation protocols : group 1, 2.5% NaOCl; group 2, 2.5% NaOCl and 17% EDTA: group 3, 2.5% NaOCl and 15% HEBP. The root canals were filled with gutta-percha and AH Plus sealer using lateral condensation. After 7 days in , 100% humidity, the coronal-to-apical microleakage was evaluated quantitatively using a glucose leakage model. The leaked glucose concentration was measured with spectrophotometry at 1, 4, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days. There was a tendency of increase in leakage in all experimental groups during experimental period. HEBP-treated dentin showed no significant difference with EDTA-treated dentin during experimental period. From the 21th day onward, HEBP-treated dentin showed significantly lower leakage than smear-covered dentin. HEBP-treated dentin displayed a similar sealing pattern to EDTA-treated dentin and a better sealing ability than smear-covered dentin. Consequently, a soft chelator(HEBP) could be considered as the possible alternative to EDTA.

      • 고혈압성 흰쥐(Spontaneous Hypertensive Rat)에서 Nifedipine투여가 Mixed-Function Oxidase와 Lipid Peroxidation에 미치는 영향

        The effect of intraperitonelly administered nifedipine, an antiphypertensive medication on the mixed-function oxidase system components, such as cytochrome P-450, cytochrome b5, NADPH- and NADH-cytochrome C reductause, p-nitroanisole-O-demethylase, and the formation of lipid peroxide and UDP-glucuronosyltransferase in the spontaneous hypertensive rat hepatic microsomes were investigated. The result is as follows: 1. After 3-7 day of nifedipine injection bidaily, the contents of cytochrome P-450 and b5 were slightly increased and after 4 weeks of nifedipine injection bidaily, the contents of cytochrome P-450 and b5 were increased significantly. 2. After 2 and 4 weeks of nifedipine injection bidaily, the activities of NADPH- and NADH-cytochrome C reductase were increased significantly. 3. After 2 and 4 weeks nifedipine injection bidaily, the activities of monooxygenase, p-nitroanisole-O-demethylase were increased significantly. 4. The formation of lipid peroxide did not change for 4 weeks injection bidaily. 5. After 2 and 4 weeks of nifedipine injection bidnily, the activity of UDP-glucuronosyltransferase was increased markedly.

        Natural bone-mimicking nanoporeincorporated hydroxyapatite scaffolds for enhanced bone tissue regeneration

        Background: A considerable number of studies has been carried out to develop alloplastic bone graft materials such as hydroxyapatite (HAP) that mimic the hierarchical structure of natural bones with multiple levels of pores: macro-, micro-, and nanopores. Although nanopores are known to play many essential roles in natural bones, only a few studies have focused on HAPs containing them; none of those studies investigated the functions of nanopores in biological systems. Method: We developed a simple yet powerful method to introduce nanopores into alloplastic HAP bone graft materials in large quantities by simply pressing HAP nanoparticles and sintering them at a low temperature. Results: The size of nanopores in HAP scaffolds can be controlled between 16.5 and 30.2 nm by changing the sintering temperature. When nanopores with a size of ~ 30.2 nm, similar to that of nanopores in natural bones, are introduced into HAP scaffolds, the mechanical strength and cell proliferation and differentiation rates are significantly increased. The developed HAP scaffolds containing nanopores (SNPs) are biocompatible, with negligible erythema and inflammatory reactions. In addition, they enhance the bone regeneration when are implanted into a rabbit model. Furthermore, the bone regeneration efficiency of the HAP-based SNP is better than that of a commercially available bone graft material. Conclusion: Nanopores of HAP scaffolds are very important for improving the bone regeneration efficiency and may be one of the key factors to consider in designing highly efficient next-generation alloplastic bone graft materials.

        일 대학 병원 마취 · 회복실 간호사의 간호활동 분석

        Purpose: This study was aimed to specify roles of nurses from the anesthesia and recovery room by analyzing nursing activities as well as anesthesia nursing during surgery. Method: The objects were 12 RNs working in the recovery room of a university hospital located in Incheon. Self-report was performed by measuring stop-watch for five days from May 17th to May 21st in 2004. Research method was designed to record the time and frequency of the nursing activity from anesthesia and recovery room based on nurses' statement and other references for five days. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, ANOVA, and t-test via SPSS Win 10.0 program. Result: Nursing activities in anesthesia recovery room were classified into two different characteristics such as direct and indirect nursing activity. The activities consisted of 11 direct nursing areas and 39 nursing activities in anesthesia preparation room. The indirect nursing was classified into 8 nursing areas and 32 nursing activities. The direct nursing was classified into 12 nursing areas and 55 nursing activity. Also, the indirect nursing was classified into 7 nursing areas and 21 nursing activities in recovery room. In terms of prevalence of nursing activities in the anesthesia preparation room, observation and cooperation of anesthesia was the most prevalent activity, drug and eqipment management the second prevalent, and drug administration the third. On the other hand, in the recovery room, the most prevalent activity was vital sign checking and observation, the second most prevalent activity informative activity, and the third body temperature control. Nursing activity time was recorded according to the nursing characteristics. In the anesthesia preparation room, the direct nursing spent for 8092.20 minutes was larger than the indirect nursing spent for 7198.50 minutes. Also, in the recovery room, the direct nursing spent for 2361.16 minutes was larger than the indirect nursing spent for 1134.13 minutes. 4. Nursing activity time was compared to duty shifts. In the anesthesia preparation room, the direct nursing was more prevalent on day shift and the indirect nursing was prevalent on evening shift. However, in the recovery room, both direct and indirect nursing activities were prevalent on day shift. Conclusion: The role of anesthesia and recovery room nurses was analysed according to the time, frequency, and its characteristics.

        Evidence of Periostitis in Joseon Dynasty Skeletons

        뼈막염은 고고학 유골에서 가장 흔히 발견되는 질병 중의 하나이며, 유골의 생전 건강상태를 가늠할 수 있게 해주는 중요한 생물학적 지표이다. 조선시대 뼈모음을 조사한 결과, 총 101명의 뼈대 중 5명의 뼈대(#4, #29, #137, #175, #290)에서 기저질환이나 손상을 보지 못하는 일차뼈막염이 발견되었다. 한편, 매독에 속발된 뼈막염을 관찰할 수 없었는데 향후 뼈모음의 수가 늘어난다면 이 부분에 대한 중요한 고병리학적 발견을 기대할 수 있을 것으로 생각하였다. 이상으로 조선시대 고인골에서 발견된 뼈막염을 처음으로 보고하게 되었으며, 앞으로 다양한 고병리학적 소견에 대한 형태학적 연구를 진행할 예정이다. Periostitis is one of the human diseases commonly encountered in archaeological samples. It is known to be an important health indicator for paleopathologists examining skeletal remains. In our recent study on a Joseon skeletal series (n=101), non-specific, primary periostitis was observed only in five individuals (#4, #29, #137, #175, and #290). Notably, there were no secondary periostitis-suggestive signs (e.g. syphilis), except for those caused by fractures (#33 and #41). As this is the inaugural Korean-skeletal-series report on periostitis, the results presented in these pages should prove significant to interested paleopathologists.

        뇌의 생김새와 자기공명영상을 깨닫는 데 도움이 되는 컴퓨터 풀그림

        뇌에 생긴 질병을 올바르게 진단하고 치료하려면 뇌의 정상 구조가 어떻게 생겼고, 자기공명영상에서 어떻게 보이는지 깨달아야 한다. 이제까지 뇌의 생김새를 깨닫기 위해서는 시체, 모형, 신경해부학 책과 같은 교육 자료를 써왔고, 뇌의 자기공명영상을 깨닫기 위해서는 자기공명영상 필름, 진단방사선학책과 같은 교육 자료를 써왔다. 요즘에는 개인용 컴퓨터의 성능이 좋아지면서 이제까지의 교육 자료를 보완하는 컴퓨터 풀그림을 만들어서 쓰고 있다. 그런데 이제까지 만든 컴퓨터 풀그림은 뇌의 생김새를 낱낱이 볼 수 없거나 서로 들어맞는 절단표본 영상과 자기공명영상을 함께 볼 수 없다는 단점이 있다. 이 연구에서는 한국 사람의 시체에서 꺼낸 뇌를 가지고 서로 들어맞는 뇌의 절단표본 영상, 자기공명영상, 구역화 영상을 여러 방향으로 절단해서 볼 수 있고, 아울러 뇌의 해부표본 영상을 볼 수 있는 컴퓨터 풀그림을 만들었다. 한국 사람의 시체에서 뇌 3개를 꺼냈다. 뇌 1개를 가지고 1.4 mm 간격의 자기공명영상 (122개)과 절단표본 (122개)을 만든 다음에 컴퓨터에 입력하였다. 뇌의 구조 (10개)를 구역화하였고, 뇌의 세부 구조 (83개)를 가리키고 이름 붙였다. 뇌 2개를 가지고 해부표본 (27개)을 만든 다음에 컴퓨터에 입력하였다. 뇌의 세부 구조 (102개)를 가리키고 이름 붙였다. 이러한 영상을 바탕으로 뇌의 생김새와 자기공명영상을 깨닫는 데 도움이 되는 수평절단, 자유절단, 해부 풀그림을 만들었다. 이 연구에서 만든 컴퓨터 풀그림을 쓰면 서로 들어맞는 뇌의 절단표본 영상, 자기공명영상, 구역화 영상을 여러 방향으로 절단해서 볼 수 있었고, 아울러 뇌의 해부표본 영상을 볼 수 있었다. 이 컴퓨터 풀그림은 의과대학 학생 또는 의사가 교육 자료로 쓸 수 있으며, 따라서 씨디 타이틀이나 인터넷을 통해서 널리 퍼뜨릴 계획이다 Understanding of brain morphology and magnetic resonance image(MRI) is essential for accurate diagnosis and treatment of the brain diseases. As education tools, the cadaver dissection, plastic models, and neuroanatomy books have been used for understanding brain morphology; and the MRI films and radiology books have been used for understanding brain MRI. Recently, due to the popularization of powerful personal computers, computer programs compensating the conventional education tools have been used. But these computer programs have a disadvantage that it is not possible to visualize the details of brain morphology or to compare the corresponding sectioned specimens and MRI. Therefore, we attempted to make a computer program which could visualize not only the details of brain morphology but also the corresponding sectioned specimens and MRI by using the brains removed from Korean cadavers. Three brains were removed from Korean cadavers. With a brain, 122 MRI and 122 serially-sectioned specimens with an 1.4mm interval were acquired and inputted into the computer. Ten brain structures were segmented, and 83 fine structures were designated on the images. With two brains, 27 dissected specimens were acquired and inputted into the computer. One-hundred two fine structures were designated on the images. Based on these images, a computer program for understanding brain morphology and MRI was made. The computer program, which was made in this study, visualized the corresponding sectioned specimens, MRI, and segmented images after sectioning a brain horizontally or at any angles. In addition, the computer program visualized the images of dissected brain. This computer program is helpful to understand brain morphology and MRI. This computer program is expected to be used through CD-title or Internet as an educational tool for medical students and doctors.
