      • Implementation of online model updating with ANN method in substructure pseudo-dynamic hybrid simulation

        Yan Hua Wang,Jing Lv,Yan Feng,Bo Wen Dai,Cheng Wang,Jing Wu,Zi Yan Chen 국제구조공학회 2021 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.28 No.2

Substructure pseudo-dynamic hybrid simulation (SPDHS) is an advanced structural seismic testing method which combines physical experiment and numerical simulation. Generally, the key components which display nonlinearity first are taken as experimental substructures for actual test, and the remaining parts are modeled in simulation. Model updating techniques can be effectively applied to enhance the model precision of nonlinear numerical elements. Specifically, the constitutive model of the experimental substructure is identified online by the instantaneously-measured data, and the corresponding numerical elements with similar hysteretic behaviors are updated synchronously. Artificial neural network (ANN) can recognize the system which cannot be represented by definite numerical model, and thus avoids the structural response distortion caused by the inherent numerical model defects. In this study, a framework for online model updating in SPDHS with ANN method is expanded to implement actual test validation. Moreover, the effectiveness of ANN method is demonstrated by practical tests of a two-story frame model with bending dampers. Additionally, the unscented Kalman filter technique and offline ANN identification approach are both examined in the test validation. The experimental results show that, under the identical loading history, the online ANN method can significantly reduce the model errors and improve the accuracy of SPDHS.

      • Therapeutic effects of lysophosphatidylcholine in experimental sepsis

        Yan, Ji-Jing,Jung, Jun-Sub,Lee, Jung-Eun,Lee, Jongho,Huh, Sung-Oh,Kim, Hee-Sung,Jung, Kyeong Cheon,Cho, Jae-Young,Nam, Ju-Suk,Suh, Hong-Won,Kim, Yung-Hi,Song, Dong-Keun Nature Publishing Group 2004 Nature medicine Vol.10 No.2

Sepsis represents a major cause of death in intensive care units. Here we show that administration of lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC), an endogenous lysophospholipid, protected mice against lethality after cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) or intraperitoneal injection of Escherichia coli. In vivo treatment with LPC markedly enhanced clearance of intraperitoneal bacteria and blocked CLP-induced deactivation of neutrophils. In vitro, LPC increased bactericidal activity of neutrophils, but not macrophages, by enhancing H2O2 production in neutrophils that ingested E. coli. Incubation with an antibody to the LPC receptor, G2A, inhibited LPC-induced protection from CLP lethality and inhibited the effects of LPC in neutrophils. G2A-specific antibody also blocked the inhibitory effects of LPC on certain actions of lipopolysaccharides (LPS), including lethality and the release of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) from neutrophils. These results suggest that LPC can effectively prevent and treat sepsis and microbial infections.

ANN based on forgetting factor for online model updating in substructure pseudo-dynamic hybrid simulation

Yan Hua Wang,Jing Lv,Jing Wu,Cheng Wang 국제구조공학회 2020 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.26 No.1

Substructure pseudo-dynamic hybrid simulation (SPDHS) combining the advantages of physical experiments and numerical simulation has become an important testing method for evaluating the dynamic responses of structures. Various parameter identification methods have been proposed for online model updating. However, if there is large model gap between the assumed numerical models and the real models, the parameter identification methods will cause large prediction errors. This study presents an ANN (artificial neural network) method based on forgetting factor. During the SPDHS of model updating, a dynamic sample window is formed in each loading step with forgetting factor to keep balance between the new samples and historical ones. The effectiveness and anti-noise ability of this method are evaluated by numerical analysis of a six-story frame structure with BRBs (Buckling Restrained Brace). One BRB is simulated in OpenFresco as the experimental substructure, while the rest is modeled in MATLAB. The results show that ANN is able to present more hysteresis behaviors that do not exist in the initial assumed numerical models. It is demonstrated that the proposed method has good adaptability and prediction accuracy of restoring force even under different loading histories.

By the Translators’ Discretion: A Study of Xíngshì yán into Hangeul

Jing Yan,조지은 한국학중앙연구원 한국학중앙연구원 2020 THE REVIEW OF KOREAN STUDIES Vol.23 No.1

This paper examines the transmission of Xíngshì yán in Joseon Korea and the roles of the translator in late Joseon literary culture. Through a comparative study of the Chinese vernacular short story collection, Xíngshì yán 型世言, alongside its Korean translation, we show how the translator in question went further than simply transferring the text from Chinese to Korean. Rather, the translator also acted as a text moderator and an editor, domesticating the text for its readers, mainly royal and gentry women. In the capacity as a textmoderator, the translator made a creative contribution in reconstructing the narrative style and in the use of lexical items and speech style. Simultaneously, as an editor, the translator omitted parts of the text that required an advanced contextual knowledge of Chinese language or culture to comprehend, while also adapting parts of the text that relate to story background, conversations between characters, description of story details, and characters’ psychological processes. Drawing upon Skopos theory, we argue that the act of translating Xíngshì yán was motivated by the goal of presenting the story to a new audience, that is royal and gentry women.

      • Vibration characteristics of functionally graded carbon nanotube-reinforced composite double-beams in thermal environments

        Jing-Lei Zhao,Xu Chen,Gui-Lin She,Yan Jing,Ru-Qing Bai,Jin Yi,Hua-Yan Pu,Jun Luo 국제구조공학회 2022 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.43 No.6

This paper presents an investigation on the free vibration characteristics of functionally graded nanocomposite double-beams reinforced by single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). The double-beams coupled by an interlayer spring, resting on the elastic foundation with a linear layer and shear layer, and is simply supported in thermal environments. The SWCNTs gradient distributed in the thickness direction of the beam forms different reinforcement patterns. The materials properties of the functionally graded carbon nanotube-reinforced composites (FG-CNTRC) are estimated by rule of mixture. The first order shear deformation theory and Euler-Lagrange variational principle are employed to derive the motion equations incorporating the thermal effects. The vibration characteristics under several patterns of reinforcement are presented and discussed. We conducted a series of studies aimed at revealing the effects of the spring stiffness, environment temperature, thickness ratios and carbon nanotube volume fraction on the nature frequency.

      • Caffeine ameliorates allergic rhinitis in an ovalbumin-induced murine model

Yan Jing Fan,Eui Hyeog Han,Hyoung Tae Kim,Zhen Nan Yu,Thi Van Nguyen,Juan Jin,Ok Hee Chai,Changho Song 대한체질인류학회 2021 대한체질인류학회 학술대회 연제 초록 Vol.64 No.-

Caffeine is one of the most widely consumed pharmacologically active products worldwide. Caffeine exhibits various pharmacological activities in central nervous, cardiovascular, and respiratory systems. Additionally, caffeine exhibited anti-inflammatory effects in lipopolysaccharide-challenged rats. However, the potential anti-inflammatory activity of caffeine in allergic rhinitis (AR) has not been investigated yet. Therefore, we aimed to examine the anti-allergic effects of caffeine in ovalbumin (OVA)-induced AR mice in this study. Briefly, BALB/c mice were sensitized and challenged with OVA. Caffeine (5, 10, 20 mg/kg) and dexamethasone (Dex, 2.5 mg/kg) were treated by intranasal instillation of 20 µL/nasal cavity for 13 days. In this study, caffeine attenuated the nasal symptoms, including rubbing and sneezing. Caffeine ameliorated the inflammation in the lungs. In addition, caffeine reduced the thickness of the nasal mucosa, alleviated goblet cell hyperplasia and reduced mast cell recruitment in the nasal mucosa. Caffeine decreased OVA-specific immunoglobulin (Ig) E and IgG1 levels in the serum, whereas increased the level of OVA-specific IgG2a. Caffeine also reduced T helper (Th) 2 cytokines (interleukin(IL)-4, IL-5 and IL-13) and Th17 family related factors (IL-17, IL-6, retinoic-related orphan receptor gamma, signal transducer and activator of transcription-3 and phospho-signal transducer and activator of transcription-3) levels and elevated Th1 cytokines (IL-12 and interferon gamma) levels in the nasal lavage fluid. However, the level of malondialdehyde was down-regulated, the levels of superoxide dismutase, nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 and heme oxygenase-1 were up-regulated in the caffeine treatment. Collectively, we suggest that caffeine might have therapeutic effects on AR.

Patterns of endoscopy during COVID-19 pandemic: a global survey of interventional inflammatory bowel disease practice

        ( Yan Chen ),( Qiao Yu ),( Francis A. Farraye ),( Gursimran S. Kochhar ),( Charles N. Bernstein ),( Udayakumar Navaneethan ),( Kaicun Wu ),( Jie Zhong ),( David A. Schwartz ),( Hao Wu ),( Jing-jing Zh 대한장연구학회 2021 Intestinal Research Vol.19 No.3

Background/Aims: Performance of diagnostic or therapeutic endoscopic procedures in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients can be challenging during a viral pandemic; the main concerns being the safety and protection of patients and health care providers (HCP). The aim of this study is to identify endoscopic practice patterns and outcomes of IBD and coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) with a worldwide survey of HCP. Methods: The 20-item survey questionnaire was sent to physician members of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Special Interest Group in Interventional IBD, Chinese IBD Society Endoscopy Interest Group, and the China Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation. Results: A total of 141 respondents submitted valid responses. Nighty-five respondents (67.9%) reported that at least 25% of their scheduled emergent endoscopic procedures were canceled or postponed during the pandemic. Fifty-six respondents (40.0%) have performed emergent endoscopy during the pandemic. A few respondents (9/140, 6.4%) estimated that more than 25% of their patients had worsened disease due to delayed or canceled emergent endoscopy procedures. More than 80% of respondents believed that personal protective equipment (PPE) for the endoscopy team, room sterilization, and pre-procedure screening of patients for COVID-19 were necessary. Out of 140 respondents, 16 (11.4%) reported that several of their patients had COVID-19. Eight clinicians (5.7%) reported that they or their endoscopy colleagues developed work-related COVID-19. Conclusions: Cancellation of elective and emergent endoscopy in IBD care during the pandemic was common. Few respondents reported that their patients’ disease conditions worsened due to the cancellation of the endoscopy procedure. Most respondents voiced the need for proper PPE during the procedure regardless of patients’ COVID-19 status and screening the patients for COVID-19. (Intest Res 2021;19:332-340)

Allium hookeri Inhibits Inflammation in OVA-induced Allergic Rhinitis in Mice via NF-κB Pathway

        Yan Jing Fan,Juan Jin,Chun Hua Piao,Thi Van Nguyen,김유석,채옥희,송창호 대한체질인류학회 2023 해부·생물인류학 (Anat Biol Anthropol) Vol.36 No.3

Allium hookeri (A. hookeri) has been used as a traditional medicine for many years in the Southeast Asian region. Multiple investigations have demonstrated its role in preventing of microbial infection, immune regulation, coronary thrombosis, and atherosclerosis has been demonstrated by several studies. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the suppressing effect of A. hookeri on the ovalbumin (OVA)-induced allergic rhinitis (AR) murine model. In this study, AR was induced in BALB/c mice by using OVA emulsified in aluminum on days 1, 8 and 15. Then, nasally challenged with OVA on days 22 to 28. On days 16 to 28, OVA-induced mice were treated either with A. hookeri (50, 100, 200 mg/kg) or Dexamethasone (Dex, 2.5 mg/kg) by oral gavage. On days 22 to 28, mice received either A. hookeri (50, 100, 200 mg/kg) or Dexamethasone (Dex, 2.5 mg/kg) an hour before the OVA challenge. The mice in the control group were not sensitized, treated, or tested. In this study, A. hookeri ameliorated nasal symptoms include rubbing and sneezing; reduced thickness of nasal mucosa; alleviated goblet cell hyperplasia and eosinophil infiltration in the nasal mucosa; decreased levels of OVA-specific IgE and OVA-specific IgG1 in serum; and suppressed Th2 (IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13) cytokines level in nasal lavage fluid (NALF). In addition, A. hookeri recovered the production of Th1 (IL-12 and IFN-γ) cytokines level in NALF, inhibited the inflammation through NF-κB pathway. Collectively, our results suggest that A. hookeri effectively protects against AR by regulating Th1/Th2 cytokines imbalance and NF-κB mechanisms. These observations suggest A. hookeri as a potential therapeutic option for AR.
