        Using acclimated sludge with inorganic nitrogen medium for three months and non-acclimated sludge, raw sludge, under aerobic condition we investigated characteristics biological nitrogen removal. As results, e acclimated sludge under aerobic condition accomplished nitrification efficiently. But the samples from the reactor operated raw sludge had higher ammonium concentration rather than the concentration which was loaded by the medium. This means when we are trying to reorganize existing facilities, we should take high initial ammonium concentration into account.

        성인의 복잡성 복강내 감염증의 치료에서 Ertapenem 단독투여와 Ceftriaxone과 Metronidazole 병용투여의 안전성과 유효성 평가를 위한 다기관, 공개, 무작위, 비교 임상연구

        Background : Ertapenem, a novel β-lactam agent with a wide range of activity, has a pharmacokinetic profile and antimicrobial spectrum that support its potential use as a once-a-day agent for the treatment of common mixed aerobic and anaerobic pathogens encountered in intraabdominal infections. Materials and Methods : The prospective, randomized, controlled, open, and multicenter trial was conducted to compare the clinical efficacy and safety of ertapenem with ceftriaxone plus metronidazole as therapy before or following adequate surgical management of complicated intraabdominal infections. Results : One hundred sixty-three patients were included in the modified intent-to-treat population, of which 134 were clinically evaluable. Patients with a wide range of infections were enrolled; perforated appendicitis or periappendiceal abscess were most common. As for the modified intent- to-treat groups, 71 of 72 (98.6%) patients treated with ertapenem and 73 of 80 (91.3%) treated with ceftriaxone/metronidazole showed favorable clinical response. Conclusion : In this study, the efficacy of ertapenem was equivalent to ceftriaxone plus metronidazole in the treatment of complicated intraabdominal infections. Ertapenem was generally well tolerated and had a similar safety and tolerability profile compared to ceftriaxone plus metronidazole. The results of this trial suggest that ertapenem could be considered as a useful option that could eliminate the need for combination and/or multi-dosed antibiotic regimens for the empiric treatment of complicated intraabdominal infections.

        Pseudomonas sp. EL-G527에 의한 환경친화성 생물계면활성제의 생산최적조건

        A biosurfactant-producing microorganism was isolated from activated sludge by enrichment culture when grown on a minimal salt medium containing n-hexadecane as a sole carbon source. This microorganism was identified as Pseudomonas sp. and it was named Pseudomonas sp. EL-G527. It's optimal culture condition is 2% n-hexadecane, 0.2% NH_4NO_3, 0.3% KH_2PO_4, 0.3% K_2HPO_4, 0.02% MgSO_4·7H_2O, 0.0025% CaCl_2·6H_2O, 0.0015% FeSO_4·7H_2O in 1ℓ distilled water and initial pH 7.0. Cultivation was initiated with a 2% inoculum obtained from starter cultures grown in 30 ㎖ of the same medium in 250 ㎖ flask. They were cultivated at 30 ℃ in reciprocal shaking incubator and the highest biosurfactant production was observed after 4 days.

      • 한국 호스피스의 현황과 전망에 관한 연구

        There has been a growing interest and concern to Hospice in Korea since 1965, which was started by Catholic sisters for the first in Korea, however, hospice is still infant stage, also there has been no report summarizing about the present status of hospice. The authors interviewed people in charge of thirty-nine hospice centers, and also reviewed thirty-four papers published between 1984 and 1995. This study was carried out from March 4th to April 27th, 1996. The results of the interviews revealed 1. Hospice services were spread nationwidly and at least one hospice center is active in each province of Korea. 2. Most of hospice services were established in the 1987s and 1990s. 3. Type of hospices are : 7 Hospice Units are hospital based. There are scattering hospices in 16 hospitals. There are 5 hospital based home hospices and 7 independent home hospices. Occupation of people in charge of hospice services were: nurses 15, priest. ministers, catholic brothers & sisters 12, doctors 9. Religious background of hospice were : catholic 25, protestant 8. 4. Hospice services were supported by personal funds in 12, personal and administration funds in 11 and administration funds in 9 hospices. 5. Hospices have been running by a team approach all but 9 of the 39 centers. Twenty one centers had education /intervention programs, but only eight of these centers had a bereavement programs. Thirteen centers published an introductory brochure for public relations. The results of the review of the papers revealed 1. Among thirty four papers, twenty papers were published between 1991-1995, showing a gradual increase in the study of hospice in recent years. 2. The content of the papers were : research 19, article 13, case report 2. 3. The subject of these studies were : cancer patients who were in the terminal stage and their families in 9, hospice care in 14. Problems suggested by people in charge of hospice were : lack of concern about hospices among doctors, patients and their families and administration officials, poor facilities, financial deficit and a lack of man power. It has been proposed that governmental financial support as well as regulatory is necessary. Enhancement of public relations is also proposed for the development of hospices in Korea. Problems that was found in papers were lack of Public Relations, financial deficits, meagerness of research and of personnel. Financial and regulatory support from the government was strongly suggested. Other proposals were similar to the results from interviews with person in chrage of hospice service. Above results showed that there has been a consensus about the problems and proposals among the members of hospice services in Korea. And also improvement in understanding of hospice services as well as financial and regulatory support from the government is necessary for the development of hospice in Korea.

        곡류가루 첨가가 소시지의 품질 및 저장성에 미치는 영향

        To investigate the effect of cereal powders on the quality and storage characteristics of sausage, Aw, pH, microbial count, TBA value, VBN value, textual and sensory characteristics were examined. Water activity tended to decrease as storage time prolonged and all the samples showed higher Aw's than that of the control. During the storage period, pH values of all the samples decreased. L, a and b values had a tendency to decrease during the storage period. During the four weeks storage at 4℃, TBA and VBN values of all the sample showed increasing tendency and were lower than those of the control. Total plate counts of bacteria, the number of lactic acid bacteria and coliform bacteria counts increased as the storage time prolonged. Texture characteristics of all samples increased up to 1 week storage and decreased subsequently. The sensory scores of all the samples decreased as the storage time prolonged.

        한국해안으로부터 Purple, Non-Sulfur Photosynthetic Bacterium, Rhodobacter sp. EGH-24의 분리 및 특성

        A species of facultative photo-organotrophic, purple, non-sulfur bacterium was isolated from the 47 point at west and south coast of Korea in September 2001. Separated 13 samples of changes with red color under 28~32 ℃, 3000 lux, anaerobe conditions for 7 days cultivated in basal medium. For pure isolation from 13 samples, we used agar-shake tube method (0.4 % agar) and separated 5 strains through 13-repetition test. EGH-24 and EGH-30 was identified as the same strain through the RAPD(Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA)-PCR of strain EGH-9, EGH-13, EGH-23, EGH-24, EGH-30. Four isolates cultivated in synthesis wastewater for wastewater biodegradation test. EGH-24 was selected with efficient wastwater treating strain. Based on the results obtained from morphology, nutrient requirements, major bacteriochlorophyll content, 16S-rDNA phylogenetic analysis, EGH-24 strain may be identified as a new strain of the genus Rhodobacter and named Rhodobacter sp. EGH-24.

      • 난분해성 폐수처리를 위해 Bioaugmentation한 생물막 반응기에 관한 연구

        The effect on the stability of biofilm and phenol removal efficiency under high phenol loading was investigated by RBC(Rotating Biological Contactor) using augmented reactor and unaugmented reactor with Rhodococcus sp. EL-GT. The operation of RBCs was carried out at rotating speed of 10 rpm and hydraulic retention time of 7 h at 20℃. The maximum amount of dry weight of the biofilm was 0.04 g/㎠ to running time for 15 days. The amount of attached biofilm of contactors was stabilized as 0.15∼0.03 g/㎠ for 35 days' running times and that of two reactors was similar value. But unaugmented reactor was shocked at 1,200 mg/ℓ phenol loading that the biofilm and removal efficiency were impacted. The bioaugmentation reactor showed higher removal rates than unaugmented reactors about phenol, sCOD and nitrogen contents. Bioaugmentation, with the strain originating from the same ecosystem and growing effectively on a selective substrate, was often effective means to treatment of recalcitrants like as phenol wastewater.

        우리나라 논 관개용 지하수 수질 특성

        This study was carried out to evaluate the status of the groundwater quality for paddy fields irrigation in Korea. Water samples were collected at 130 sites throughout the country. Samples were collected at three seasons-April, July and October-in 2000. According to our survey, the groundwater was found to be suitable for irrigation purpose. Average EC was shown 0.286 dS/m. Nitrate-nitrogen and Cl^(-) concentration was 5.6 ㎎/L, 32.95 ㎎/L which satisfied the Korean Standards for Irrigation Water. Nitrate-nitrogen concentration in each province was shown as following orders: Jeju (11.17 ㎎/L) > Chungnam (8.16 ㎎/L) > Gyeongbuk (6.64 ㎎/L) > Gyounggi (5.91 ㎎/L) > Chungnam (4.95 ㎎/L) > Gyeongnam (3.91 mgk) > Jeonbuk (3.50 ㎎/L) > Jeonnam (3.27 ㎎/L) > Gangwon (2.91 ㎎/L). The concentration by sampling seasons were October (6.62 ㎎/L) > July (5.88 mg&) > April (4.78㎎/L). As the soil of Jeju Province is usually derived from volcanic ash soils mainly used for upland drops, it may influence the nitrate-nitrogen concentration of groundwater. The amount of rainfall also influence the water quality. But the COD_(Cr), were shown April (3.17㎎/L) > July (2.91 ㎎/L) > October (2.40 ㎎/L), it is highly related in the basal dose of organic matter fertilizers. This study demonstrated that groundwater quality was suitable for irrigation, but continuous monitoring is recommended for agricultural policy and developing OECD agricultural environment indicators.
