Microalgae hold promise as producers of sustainable biomass for the production of biofuels and other biomaterials. However, the selection of strains with efficient and robust production of desirable resources remains challenging. In this study, we isolated a green microalga from Korea and analyzed its morphological, molecular, and biochemical characteristics. Microscopic and phylogenetic analyses demonstrated that the isolate could be classified into the genus Chlamydomonas, and we designated the isolate Chlamydomonas s p. K IOST -1. Compositions of protein, lipid, and carbohydrate in the microalgal cells were estimated to be 58.8 ± 0.2%, 22.7 ± 1.2%, and 18.5 ± 1.0%, respectively. Similar to other microalgae belonging to Chlorophyceae, the dominant amino acid and monosaccharide in Chlamydomonas sp. KIOST-1 were glutamic acid and glucose. On the other hand, the proportions of saturated fatty acids, monounsaturated fatty acids, and polyunsaturated fatty acids clearly differed from other species in the genus Chlamydomonas, and monounsaturated fatty acids accounted for a large portion (41.3%) of the total fatty acids in the isolate. Based on these results, Chlamydomonas sp. KIOST-1 has advantageous characteristics for biomass production.

Background: Human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA), tick-borne infectious disease, is a zoonotic disease transmitted by mainly Haemaphysalis spp. or Ixodes spp. ticks infected by obligate intracellular bacteria Anaplasma phagocytophilum. Clinical manifestations of HGA in most patients are first revealed as flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, myalgia, malaise, thrombocytopenia, and leukopenia. HGA responds favorably to treatment with doxycycline or tetracycline and complete recovery takes several days. In South Korea, HGA was first reported in 2014 and since then there were some reports about Anaplasmosis cases in South Korea. This study shows the result of laboratory diagnoses of HGA in suspected patients using immune-fluorescent antibody assay (IFA) and PCR in 2018. Materials & Methods: Sera and blood samples were collected from the suspected HGA patient in 2018. We have conducted serological tests of HGA by IFA test from the sera of 886 patients. Nested PCR was performed to amplify 16S rRNA gene of A. phagocytophilum of 328 blood samples. For PCR DNA were extracted from blood samples using DNA extraction kits. Results: In serological test using IFA, 188(21.2%) of the 886 cases were shown positive for IgG or IgM of A. phagocytophilum (male; 105/188(55.9%) vs. female; 83/188(44.1%)). In PCR test, 26 of 328 cases showed positive result. In serology, there were 32 cases showing 4 fold increase between initial phase and convalescence phase. Conclusions: This study reports laboratory result of A. phagocytophilum from suspicious patients with HGA, 2018. Although the attention about rickettsial diseases in South Korea are increasing these days, there is need more attention and systemical control regarding Anaplasmosis in South Korea because the number of positive cases of Anaplasmosis tend to increase gradually. The global burden of chronic liver disease (CLD) is substantial. Due to the limited indication of and accessibility to antiviral therapy in viral hepatitis and lack of effective pharmacological treatment in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, the beneficial effects of antidiabetics and non–antidiabetics in clinical practice have been continuously investigated in patients with CLD. In this narrative review, we focused on non-antidiabetic drugs, including ursodeoxycholic acid, silymarin, dimethyl- 4,4’-dimethoxy-5,6,5’,6’-dimethylenedixoybiphenyl-2,2’-dicarboxylate, L-ornithine L-aspartate, branched chain amino acids, statin, probiotics, vitamin E, and aspirin, and summarized their beneficial effects in CLD. Based on the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory properties, and regulatory functions in glucose or lipid metabolism, several non–antidiabetic drugs have shown beneficial effects in improving liver histology, aminotransferase level, and metabolic parameters and reducing risks of hepatocellular carcinoma and mortality, without significant safety concerns, in patients with CLD. Although the effect as the centerpiece management in patients with CLD is not robust, the use of these non-antidiabetic drugs might be potentially beneficial as an adjuvant or combined treatment strategy.

IL-12 is a secretory heterodimeric cytokine composed of p35 and p40 subunits. IL-12 p35 and p40 subunits are sometimes produced as monomers or homodimers. IL-12 is also produced as a membrane-bound form in some cases. In this study, we hypothesized that the membrane-bound form of IL-12 subunits may function as a costimulatory signal for selective activation of TAA-specific CTL through direct priming without involving antigen presenting cells and helper T cells. MethA fibrosarcoma cells were transfected with expression vectors of membrane-bound form of IL-12p35 (mbIL-12p35) or IL-12p40 subunit (mbIL-12p40) and were selected under G418-containing medium. The tumor cell clones were analyzed for the expression of mbIL-12p35 or p40 subunit and for their stimulatory effects on macrophages. The responsible T-cell subpopulation for antitumor activity of mbIL-12p35 expressing tumor clone was also analyzed in T cell subset-depleted mice. Expression of transfected membranebound form of IL-12 subunits was stable during more than 3 months of in vitro culture, and the chimeric molecules were not released into culture supernatants. Neither the mbIL-12p35-expressing tumor clones nor mbIL-12p40-expressing tumor clones activated macrophages to secrete TNF-${\alpha}$. Growth of mbIL-12p35-expressing tumor clones was more accelerated in the $CD8^+$ T cell-depleted mice than in $CD4^+$ T cell-depleted or normal mice. These results suggest that $CD8^+$ T cells could be responsible for the rejection of mbIL-12p35-expressing tumor clone, which may bypass activation of antigen presenting cells and $CD4^+$ helper T cells.
