Korean Dictionaries and Some Model Dictionaries of the World : Critical Essays toward the Plan for a New Korean Dictionary

After briefly reviewing the history of lexcoigraphy in modem Korea, Nam Kishim tackles many problems created by the general deficiency of current Korean monolingual dictionaries in phonological morphological and semantic points. For example, most Korean dictionaries do not treat such phonological changes as the shortening of the stem vowel ㅓ in 더운, the prenominal form of the adjective 덥다, whose stem vowel ㅓ is pronounced long. Background : Bleeding after endoscopic procedure of the stomach carries an increased risk of morbidity and mortality. In case of oozing hemorrhage, not in active hemorrhage, powdered sodium alginate may play a role in control of bleeding with convenience. Therefore, we evaluated the clinical effect and efficacy of sodium alginate powder in upper G-Ⅰ bleeding. Methods : Forty-five patients who had upper G-Ⅰ bleeding after endoscopic procedure were enrolled in this study. Twenty-five patients of them were managed by the application of powder preparation of Sodium alginate(ALTO). The others were observed without treatment. The next day, we performed endoscopy in all patients to ascertain the hemostasis. Results : Of 25 patients managed with Sodium alginate, only two patients(8%) had bleeding (hemostatic rate : 92%), On the other hand, of 20 patients who did not receive any treatment, 3 patient(15%) had bleeding (hemostatic rate : 85%). There was no statistical difference between the two groups(p>0.05). Using other endoscopic procedure, We successfully treated the patient who continued to bleed. Conclusion : We evaluated the effect of the spary of sodium alginate on oozing hemorrhage. Although there was no statistical significance in our study, it seems that the spray of sodium alginate may be a useful method for the prevention of bleeding after endoscopic procedure.

Despite the use of aggressive local and systemic treatment including autologous stem cell transplantation in multiple myeloma, extramedullary recurrences are common and the prognosis of these patients is poor. Many novel drugs such as thalidomide, lenalidomide and bortezomib improve the response of treatment of multiple myeloma, but some reports failed to describe thalidomide has effect in extramedullary plasmacytoma. Recent data report on the successful treatment plasmacytomas with bortezomib in patients with advanced multiple myeloma. We treated 4 relapsed or refractory extramedullary plasmacytomas with bortezomib at our institution. We recognized all these extramedullary plasmacytomas decreased and showed more than partial response. This report lends support to the efficacy of bortezomib in the treatment of plasmacytoma and describes the safe use of bortezomib. Responses may, however, be of short duration. Therefore, despite our limited experience, we propose that bortezomib may be considered a therapeutic option for such patients who have risk of radiation therapy

Objectives : The aim of this study was to examine the behavioral and emotional problems associated with nocturnal enuresis in Korean children. Methods : Three hundred eighteen children with nocturnal enuresis, together with their parents, completed the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), Disruptive Behavior Disorder Scale according to DSM-IV (DBDS), Children's Depression Inventory (CDI), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children (STAIC), and Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale (PHCSC). Ninety-three normal students were selected as the control group. Results : Compared to the normal control group, the mean scores with regard to the withdrawn, social problems, attention problems, delinquent behavior, aggressive behavior, externalizing problems and total problems profiles were significantly higher in the nocturnal enuresis group according to the CBCL results. The nocturnal enuresis group also scored significantly higher in the ADHD and ODD profiles of the DBDS. The nocturnal enuresis group was more depressed and anxious than the control group according to the results of the CDI and STAI. The mean score of the PHCSC was significantly lower in the nocturnal enuresis group when compared to the normal control group. Conclusion : The results of this study suggest that children with nocturnal enuresis in Korea have clinically relevant behavioral and emotional problems. The findings support the link between nocturnal enuresis and psychopathology in Korean children.

Alexander Pope is treated in this essay as a poet in its original sense-a maker. The poetic technique of Pope may be characterized as "correctness." His "correctness" appears in his creative imitation of classical genres. His easy style is seen as a revulsion from the "artificiality" of the preceding 'metaphysical school,' and on this premise the literary views of the two periods are compared. The prime point of comparison here is between imagery for its own sake and imagery for illustration. To guard against any misunderstanding that Pope wrote simple, superficial poetry, passages from the Dunciad are cited in which words appear with many shades of nuance. His "correctness" of languages is further pointed up by classifying important patterns of statement in heroic meter. "Correctness" of his language is also discussed in connection with his choice of apt words : an explication of poetic diction and its purpose is made part of this discussion. Pope's influence may have been an unfortunate one on his imitators, yet he himself maintained a superb workmanship, Pope did not believe in any special anthology of poetic diction; he was convinced that genre determined diction and demonstrated this in his poetry. In his satires Pope employed colloquialisms with freedom and precision. His use of "colour-words" receives special mention here. An inseparable blend is achieved between meter and content and therefore his rhythm proves to be intergrated with his theme. "Certain niceties" in versification which he expounded in his letter to Walsh are illustrated by quoted passages. To Pope, sound was a subsidiary medium to ensure accuracy of transmission. His effective use of rhyme was intellectual, often approaching the effect of pun. Pope was also a poet with a "fire" who could "catch a grace beyond the reach of art," a true poet who had mastered, and thereby transcended, the often disparaged poetic rules.

There is a need to improve the efficiency of the existing sanitary treatment facilities, because the effluent standard becomes more stricter and septic sludge increased. Thus, operating processes of sanitary treatment system in M city changed with installation of additional facilities. Process modifications were as follows: Dilution water was added to the next process after primary aeration tank. Some secondary sedimentation sludge was recycled to primary aerator so that most of the organics were stabilized in primary aeration tank under automatic control of dissolved oxygen. The line of effluent from dewatering process flowing to the activated sludge tank was changed to the primary aerator. The primary sedimentation sludge line was linked to a thickener. Polymer was added to the activated sludge tank. The effluent of primary aerator and aerobic digester was recycled from the 5th to the 1st sector. As consequencies of above process modifications, the improvement of removal efficiency was achieved as BOD 54%, COD 42%, SS 61%, T-N 39%, and T-P 12%, respectively.

This study aims at the analyses of Flood runoff characteristics for small river basins by hydro-geomorphologic and storm parameters. In this paper, a study of the runoff characteristics of small river basins in Wi-Stream basin of Nak-Dong river is reported in which the variation of flood runoff volume and unit hydrograph shape is analysesed with respect to storm and basin characteristics. The results are based on the characteristics of rainfall, runoff hydrographs and basin conditions for storm enents between 1984 and 1986 on six basins in the Wi-Stream basin. Analysesed regration models in this study can be used to predict streamflow hydrographs on ungaged basins of similar types.
