Superparamagnetic Adsorbent Based on Phosphonate Grafted Mesoporous Carbon for Uranium Removal
Husnain, Syed M.,Kim, Hyun Ju,Um, Wooyong,Chang, Yoon-Young,Chang, Yoon-Seok American Chemical Society 2017 INDUSTRIAL & ENGINEERING CHEMISTRY RESEARCH - Vol.56 No.35

A direct approach was presented to graft phosphonate groups on magnetic mesoporous carbon by an impregnation method with environmentally friendly precursors unlike the conventional methods involving a series of complicated steps and harsh conditions. Through the in situ reduction of Fe3+, magnetite particles of similar to 10 nm were successfully embedded into the mesopores, which was confirmed by HR-TEM. Surface characterization by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared revealed phosphonate functional groups anchored through multidentate bonding with the surface of P-Fe-CMK-3. Due to the combined advantages of mesoporous pore size (5.5 nm), phosphonate ligands (1.42 mmol g(-1)), and magnetic sensitivity (5.20 emu g(-1)), this multifunctional adsorbent captured >85% of UO22+ within 5 min and the maximum adsorption capacity was 150 mg g(-1) at pH 4. The exceptionally high selectivity and efficiency of P-Fe-CMK-3 toward uranyl capture even in groundwater (K-d = 1 x 10(5) mL g(-1)), radioactive wastewater (K-d = 3 x 10(4) mL g(-1)), and seawater (K-d = 1 x 10(4) mL g(-1)) at V/m = 1000 mL g(-1) was better than that of the previously reported adsorbents. Importantly, the adsorbent maintained UO22+ adsorption efficiency >99% over five cycles due to the excellent chemical and structural stabilities. Above all, the adsorbent could be manipulated for UO22+ capture with help of a magnetic field in the real world, especially in case of nuclear accidents, decommissioning of nuclear power plants and/or uranium recovery from seawater.

Inhibitory effects of the extract from Quercus dentata gallnut against plant virus infection
Kwon, SB.,Shin, JE.,Ahn ,SY.,Yoon, CS,Kim, BS 한국유기농업학회 2011 韓國有機農業學會誌 Vol.19 No.S
Pepper mild mosaic virus (PMMoV) and cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) are important pathogens in various vegetable crops worldwide. We have found that methanol extracts of Quercus dentate (Daimyo Oak) gallnut strongly inhibit PMMoV and CMV infection. Based on this result, the inhibitor named as "KN0912" formulated from the extract of Q. dentate gallnut was tested for its inhibitory effects on PMMoV or CMV infection to each local lesion host plant (Nicotiana glutinosa; PMMoV, Chenopodium amaranticolor; CMV). Pre-treatment effect of KN0912 against infections of each virus to local host plant was measured to be 75. 1:±0. 5-97. 5±1. 5% to PMMoV and 70.6±2.2-99.0±1.0% to CMV in 1-10mg/ml conc. and the absorption effect of the antiviral composition of KN0912 to the inside of tobacco leaves tissue, was inhibited by 55.7% to PMMoV and 63.8% to CMV. The persistence of KN0912 treatment was maintained until after the 3 days high inhibitory effect by 98% to PMMoV and by 95.1% to CMV. Inhibitory effects on systemic host plants of KN0912 were measured to be 80-90% to PMMoV and 60-75% to CMV. From the change of morphological characteristics of PMMoV particles under EM, we are tentatively suggested that one mode of action of KN0912 is inactivation due to the destruction of virus particles.

Okinawan spinach, a recently introduced crop, in South Korea has gained considerable attention. However, farmers are having difficulties in controlling several species of lepidopterous pests, due to the lack of registered pesticides for the current investigated crop. This study is carried out to establish the pre-harvest interval (PHI) for spinetoram and imidacloprid insecticides in okinawan spinach. Both spinetoram 5% WG and imidacloprid 10% WP were diluted 2,000 times, then sprayed twice with 1-week interval at 0, 7, 14, and 21 days before harvest. The spinetoram and its metabolites and imidacloprid were extracted by the QuEChERS method and analyzed by LC-MS/MS. The linearity of the calibration curve was excellent (r² = ≥0.99) and range was between 0.01 to 0.6 for all compounds. The average recoveries at two fortification levels (0.01 and 0.1mg/kg) were 76.0% ~116.7% with the relative standard deviation (RSD) below 10%. The method limit of quantification for all compounds were 0.01mg/kg. The total residues of spinetoram in okinawan spinach ranged from 0.01 to 2.33mg/kg while the residues of imidacloprid ranged from <0.01 to 3.40mg/kg. The maximum residue limit (MRL) set by Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) for spinetoram and imidacloprid in leafy vegetable is 1.0mg/kg and 3.0mg/kg respectively. According to the current study spinetoram and imidacloprid declined to a level below the stated MRL within 7 days between the last application and harvesting. Therefore, the safe use for spinetoram 5% WG and imidacloprid 10% WP in okinawan spinach is recommended as twice treatment at 7 days before harvest.
Haptic Guided Optimized Aircraft Maintenance Assembly Disassembly Path Planning Scheme
Syed Hassan,Jungwon Yoon 제어로봇시스템학회 2010 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2010 No.10
The virtual aircraft manufacturing environment the most difficult phase so far considered is the automated A/D process (Assembly / Disassembly). The effectiveness of the maintenance scheme depends on the time taken to complete the A/D process. When dealing with complex 3D environment that simulates realistic models, the assembly path planning of the parts becomes more complex because of the factors like complex geometry computations, obstacles, orientation and initial/final position of the part. Therefore, In a 3D environment the path planning of the parts becomes an important factor affecting the overall efficiency of the maintenance process. To address this problem an intelligent assembly path planner is developed with an approach based on Ant colony algorithm and potential field path planning concepts. Furthermore, haptic-assisted feature is implemented for user support for realistic 3D path planning simulations and training.
