A software tool for integrated risk assessment of spent fuel transportation and storage

When temporary spent fuel storage pools at nuclear power plants reach their capacity limit, the spentfuel must be moved to an alternative storage facility. However, radioactive materials must be handledand stored carefully to avoid severe consequences to the environment. In this study, the risks of threepotential accident scenarios (i.e., maritime transportation, an aircraft crashing into an interim storagefacility, and on-site transportation) associated with the spent fuel transportation process were analyzedusing a probabilistic approach. For each scenario, the probabilities and the consequences were calculatedseparately to assess the risks: the probabilities were calculated using existing data and statistical models,and the consequences were calculated using computation models. Risk assessment software wasdeveloped to conveniently integrate the three scenarios. The risks were analyzed using the developedsoftware according to the shipment route, building characteristics, and spent fuel handling environment. As a result of the risk analysis with varying accident conditions, transportation and storage strategieswith relatively low risk were developed for regulators and licensees. The focus of this study was the riskassessment methodology; however, the applied model and input data have some uncertainties. Furtherresearch to reduce these uncertainties will improve the accuracy of this model.
주요국의 원자력 정책에 따른 기술 동향 분석 - 안전과 핵연료 분야를 중심으로

본 논문에서는 국가 원자력 정책의 방향에 따라 기술개발을 진행하고 있는 주요국의 연구 동향을 원자력 안전과 핵연료를 중심으로 살펴보았다. 이를 위해 원전의 안전성을 향상할 수 있는 주요 연구주제와 선진 핵연료 연구주제를 세분화 하여 국가 간 비교를 하였다. 비교 결과 모든 조사 대상국에서 가동 중 원전의 안전성 향상을 위한 연구를 하고 있으며 원전을 가동 중인 국가에서는 수명연장을 위한 핵심 기술개발 또한 진행 중이다. 후쿠시마 사고 이후 중대사고 연구도 활발히 진행 중이며 사고 이해를 위한 원자로 시뮬레이션 도구 개발이 이루어지고 있다. 선진 핵연료 소자 개발은 기술력의 수준이 높거나 원자력 에너지를 적극 지원하는 미국, 프랑스, 중국에서 연구 중이다. 마지막으로 기술 동향 비교 결과를 통해 우리나라 원자력연구개발의 시사점을 도출하였다. In this paper, the research trends of major countries that are developing technologies in accordance with the direction of the national nuclear policy are examined, focusing on nuclear safety and nuclear fuel. Major research topics for improving the safety of nuclear power plants and research topics about advanced fuel were subdivided and compared between countries. As a result, all the surveyed countries are conducting research to improve the safety of nuclear power plants in operation, and core technologies for extending the life of nuclear power plants are also in progress. After the Fukushima accident, research related to severe accident is actively investigated, and the development of advanced reactor simulation tools for understanding the accident is underway. Advanced nuclear fuel development is being studied in the United States, France, and China, where the level of technology is high and active support for nuclear energy. Finally, the implications of Korea"s nuclear research and development were drawn through the comparison of technology trends.
MicroRNA super-resolution imaging in blood for Alzheimer’s disease

We propose a novel blood biomarker detection method thatuses miRNA super-resolution imaging to enable the early diagnosisof Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Here, we report a singlemoleculedetection method for visualizing disease-specificmiRNA in tissue from an AD mice model, and peripheral bloodmononuclear cells (PBMCs) from AD patients. Using optimizedMagnified Analysis of Proteome (MAPs), we confirmed that fivemiRNAs contribute to neurodegenerative disease in the brainhippocampi of 5XFAD and wild-type mice. We also assessedPBMCs isolated from the whole blood of AD patients and ahealthy control group, and subsequently analyzed those samplesusing miRNA super-resolution imaging. We detected moremiR-200a-3p expression in the cornu ammonis 1 and dentategyrus regions of 3 month-old 5XFAD mice than in wild-typemice. Additionally, miRNA super-resolution imaging of bloodprovides AD diagnosis platform for studying miRNA regulationinside cells at the single molecule level. Our results present apotential liquid biopsy method that could improve the diagnosisof early stage AD and other diseases.

<P>Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) are maintained in a quiescent state in bone marrow (BM) niches by intrinsic and extrinsic signals. The mechanisms regulating the quiescence and mobilization of HSCs, however, remain unclear. In this study, we report that the expression of thioredoxin-interacting protein (TXNIP) is decreased during HSC activation. In Txnip(-/-) mice, the long-term reconstituting HSC population is decreased and exhausted, and its capacity to repopulate is rapidly lost. These effects are associated with hyperactive Wnt signaling, an active cell cycle, and reduced p21 expression under conditions of stress. TXNIP deficiency reduced the CXCL12- and osteopontin-mediated interaction between HSCs and the bone marrow, and impaired homing and retention in the osteoblastic niche, resulting in mobilized HSCs. Therefore, we propose that TXNIP is essential for maintaining HSC quiescence and the interaction between HSCs and the BM niche.</P>
