Japanese Listeners’ Judgments of Prolongations: With Focus on the Effect of Phonemic Length Contrast

Purpose: This study examined 1) what the absolute minimal duration of the lengthened Japanese sounds /s/, /ss/, /i/, and /i:/ are that are perceived to be abnormal by native speakers of Japanese; 2) what the relative ratio of a stimulus sound’s original length to its absolute perceptual threshold is; 3) whether differences are observed between short and long fricatives and between short and long vowels; and 4) whether phonemic length contrast affects the perceived abnormality of lengthened speech sounds. Methods: Twelve native speakers of Japanese (2 males, 10 females) listened to the Japanese sounds /s/, /ss/, /i/, and /i:/, each of which was lengthened by 0-400 ms in 20 ms increments. The participants rated whether the sound was normal (0) or abnormal (1). The minimal duration for each lengthened sound to be perceived as abnormal by the participants was calculated by analyzing the receiver operating characteristic curves using Youden’s index. Results: The minimal prolongation duration to be perceived as abnormal was 70 ms for /s/, 130 ms for /ss/, 70 ms for /i/, and 170 ms for /i:/. The percentage increases in duration required to be perceived as abnormal were 106% for /s/, 129% for /ss/, 117% for /i/, and 138% for /i:/. Conclusion: Phonemic length contrast affects the minimal prolongation duration and the percentage increase thresholds at which Japanese listeners perceive speech sounds as abnormally long. The implications of these results were further discussed within a diagnostic context of sound prolongation as one of core behaviors of stuttering.
Fecal microbiome shifts by different forms of copper supplementations in growing pigs

Copper is an essential mineral for pigs, thus it is used as a feed additive in the forms of copper sulfate. Therefore, this study aimed at characterizing the fecal microbiota shifts in pigs as fed by different forms of copper supplementation. 40 growing pigs aged 73 ± 1 days with an average weight of 30.22 ± 1.92kg were randomly divided into 5 groups. The control group (CON) fed with basal diet, while treatment groups were fed a basal diet supplemented with 100 ppm/kg of copper sulfate (CuSO<sub>4</sub>), Cu-glycine complex (CuGly), Cu-amino acid complex (CuAA), and Cu-hydroxy(4methylthio)butanoate chelate complex (CuHMB) for 28 days of trial, respectively. The data presented the comparison between inorganic and organic copper supplementation through gut microbiota in growing pigs. Alpha and Beta diversity anaylsis resulted in copper supplementation did shifted gut microbioal community structure. At the phylum level, Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes were the most abundant phyla at all times regardless of treatment. At the genus level, the relative abundances of Prevotella, Lactobacillus, Megasphaera, and SMB53 of the CuGly and CuHMB groups were significantly higher than those of copper sulfate and basal diet groups. Overall, this study may provide the potential role of organic copper replacing inorganic copper, resulting in increased beneficial bacteria in the pig gut.

Perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) are promising emissive materials for application in light-emitting diodes(LEDs) due to their high quantum efficiency and narrow full width at half maximum (FWHM). However,the ion bonding character of perovskite leads to their quick chemical decomposition under atmosphericmoisture. Herein, we present CsPbBr3 perovskite NCs that achieved improved efficiency and stabilitywith the addition of water during the synthesis process. The CsPbBr3 NCs synthesized with a controlledamount of water exhibited a quantum yield greater than 90%, sustained stability over 35 days and a muchnarrower FWHM than CsPbBr3 NCs that did not use water. Finally, water-added perovskite NC LEDs werefabricated and they showed a nearly 5-times improvement in current efficiency compared to thereference device.
Effect of Pesticide Residue in Muscle and Fat Tissue of Pigs Treated with Propiconazole

This study estimated the effect of exposure to propiconazole through implementation and residues in finishing pigs. We analyzed the expression of fibrosisrelated genes and performed histological analysis of the blood, liver, kidney, muscle, ileum, and fat tissues. The animals were exposed for 28 d to different concentrations of propiconazole (0.09, 0.44, 0.88, 4.41, and 8.82 mg/kg bw/d). Quantitative, gene expression, and histological analyses in tissues were performed using liquid chromatography mass spectrometry, real-time PCR, and Masson’s trichrome staining, respectively. Final body weight did not differ among groups. However, genes involved in fibrosis were significantly differentially regulated in response to propiconazole concentrations. Glucose, alanine aminotransferase, and total bilirubin levels were significantly increased compared with those in the control group, while alkaline phosphatase level was decreased (p<0.05) after exposure to propiconazole. The residue limits of propiconazole were increased in the finishing phase at 4.41 and 8.82 mg/kg bw/d. The liver, kidney, and ileum showed blue staining after propiconazole treatment, confirmed by Masson s trichrome staining. In conclusion, these findings suggest that propiconazole exposure disturbs the expression of fibrosis-related genes. This study on dietary propiconazole in pigs can provide a basis for determining maximum residue limits and a better understanding of metabolism in pigs and meat products.

Objective: Carriers of robertsonian and reciprocal translocation are phenotypically normal, but they are known to be at an increased risk of chromosomally abnormal pregnancy. FISH (fluorescent in situ hybridization) has been an useful technique for translocation carriers wishing to have babies. In our center, the PGT-SR using FISH was introduced in December 1997. Here, we present reproductive outcomes of PGT-SR using FISH for 123 couples of robertsonian and 424 couples of reciprocal translocation according to carriers gender. Methods: Retrospective chart review. PGT-SR using FISH was performed in 251 cycles of 123 couples (male: 36, female: 87) with robertsonian translocation and in 1413 cycles of 424 couples (male: 177, female: 247) with reciprocal translocation from December 1997 to July 2017. We compared transferrable embryo rate, CPR (clinical pregnancy rate) and cumulative LBR (live birth rate) between male and female carrier of robertsonian and reciprocal translocation, respectively. Results: In robertsonian translocation, transferrable embryo rate per diagnosed embryos was significantly higher in male than female carriers (male: 30.2% vs female: 24.9%, p=0.012). However, CPR per ET (embryo transfer) did not differ between genders (male: 20.6% vs female: 27.2%, p=0.286). Cumulative LBR per couple (male: 30.6% vs female: 31.0%, p=0.808) did not differ between genders as well. The average time until the pregnancy was comparable in both groups (male: 7.4 months, female: 10.9 months). In reciprocal translocation, transferrable embryo rate was comparable between male and female carriers (male: 22.2% vs female 20.3%, p=0.359). CPR per ET and cumulative LBR did not differ. The average time until the pregnancy was comparable. Conclusion: This data indicates the possibility of normal or balanced embryos could be decreased in female robertsonian translocation carrier than male carrier, nevertheless the live birth rate is not different. Our data may be useful to counsel with translocation carriers for PGT-SR.
