The holoenzyme of protein phosphatase (PP) from tulip petals was purified by using hydrophobic interaction, anion exchange and microcystin affinity chromatography to analyze activity towards p-nitrophenyl phosphate (p-NPP). The catalytic subunit of PP was released from its endogenous regulatory subunits by ethanol precipitation and further purified. Both preparations were characterized by immunological and biochemical approaches to be PP2A. On SDS-PAGE, the final purified holoenzyme preparation showed three protein bands estimated at 38, 65, and 75 kDa while the free catalytic subunit preparation showed only the 38 kDa protein. In both preparations, the 38 kDa protein was identified immunologically as the catalytic subunit of PP2A by using a monoclonal antibody against the PP2A catalytic subunit. The final 623- and 748-fold purified holoenzyme and the free catalytic preparations, respectively, exhibited high sensitivity to inhibition by 1 nM okadaic acid when activity was measured with p-NPP. The holoenzyme displayed higher stimulation in the presence of ammonium sulfate than the free catalytic subunit did by protamine, thereby suggesting different enzymatic behaviors.
Identification of a Novel Sugar Compound from Korean Pine Seeds
Md. Abul Kalam Azad,Fei Wang,김학렬 한국식품과학회 2015 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.24 No.6
Sugar derivatives are critically important in nutritional, pharmaceutical, and some non-food industries. Amino sugars are more important as essential components of many drugs, antibiotics, and biopolymers. Hence, a novel amino sugar compound is worthy of investigation for identification and production. A novel amino sugar compound was identified from crude extracts of Korean pine seed embryos. This new compound was isolated from extracts using traditional purification steps. The pure compound was white in color with a melting point of 145℃. HPLC, TLC, FT-IR, and NMR analyses of the compound indicated a trisaccharide form of amino mannose that was polymerized with β-(1→2) glycosidic bonding. Computer-aided NMR spectral analysis of the trisaccharide of 2-dehydro-2- mannosamine exhibited a 96% match with the 13C-NMR spectrum of the new compound.

The study aims to explore whether Ajzen’s theory of planned behavior is determinant of managers’ propensity for participative decisionmaking in Bangladeshi textile industries. Surveys measuring the theory of planned behavior assumptions and propensity for participative decision-making were administered to 384 full-time managers and supervisors from different textile industries across Bangladesh. A measurement and structural equation model were employed to explain the cause-and-effect relationship between the variables. Results generally support Ajzen’s prediction that managers’ psychological and psychosomatic predisposition is linked to participative decisionmaking. Findings suggest that managers’ attitude toward participative decision-making, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control significantly impact their avoidance or acceptance of participative decision-making in prevailing organizational settings. The findings also present a convincing argument for managers to constantly challenge their assumptions about workers and objectively analyze whether their perceptions affect their decision-making practices. The previous studies concerning managers’ propensity for participative decisionmaking are conducted in western developing and developed nations. This study has taken the initiative to advance previous knowledge into a least developed country. This study expands the landscape of participative decision-making literature, adding further evidence that individual-difference variables, in this case, theory of planned behavior assumptions, greatly influence managers’ and supervisors’ biases about employee participation.
Role of RNase on Microbial Community Analysis in the Rice and Wheat Plants Soil by 16S rDNA-DGGE
Md. Mizanur Rahman,Abul Kalam Azad,Shamima Nasrin Sima,Md. Mashiar Rahman 한국작물학회 2014 Journal of crop science and biotechnology Vol.17 No.4
In this work, we reported the role of RNase on microbial community analysis from soil samples. The amounts of chemical componentswere measured from the adjoining soil of rice and wheat plants. The chemical properties of these soils were rich in surfacelevel as compared to other soil layers. Total DNA was extracted from freshly collected soils. To obtain pure DNA, half of the samplewas incubated with RNase and half was without RNase. A total of 16S rDNA fragments were amplified and analyzed by DenaturingGradient Gel Electrophoresis (DGGE). RNase-treated DNA followed by PCR resulted in a PCR product of good yield and integrity. DGGE bands and cluster analysis indicated a significant difference between the patterns obtained from RNase-treated and RNasenon-treated samples. The sequencing results of 16S rDNA fragments from DGGE profiles of soil samples indicated that the dominantbacteria are composed of different gene sequences. This is an interesting preliminary observation which indicates that the RNasetreatment prior to amplification and DGGE analysis modifies the pattern obtained. Therefore, it is suitable for community analysis ofagricultural plant soil samples as well as environmental samples
EM-Psychiatry: An Ambient Intelligent System for Psychiatric Emergency
Alam, Md. Golam Rabiul,Haw, Rim,Kim, Sung Soo,Azad, Md. Abul Kalam,Abedin, Sarder Fakhrul,Hong, Choong Seon IEEE 2016 IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON INDUSTRIAL INFORMATICS - Vol.12 No.6

The proliferation of the market in patient care services is attracting attention in the healthcare industry; however, a remote mental healthcare system is still unattainable. In this paper, an ambient intelligent system of in-home psychiatric care service for emergency psychiatry (EM-psychiatry) is proposed for the remote monitoring of psychiatric emergency patients. The emergency psychiatric states of patients are modeled as the states of the maximum-entropy Markov model (MEMM), in which sensor observations, psychiatric screening scores, and patients' histories are considered as the observations of MEMM. A modified Viterbi, a machine-learning algorithm, is used to generate the most probable psychiatric state sequence based on such observations; then, from the most likely psychiatric state sequence, the emergency psychiatric state is predicted through the proposed algorithm. The ambient EM-psychiatry model is implemented and the performance of the proposed prediction model is analyzed using the receiver operator characteristics curves, which demonstrates that the use of the EM-psychiatric screening questionnaire with biosensor observations enhances the prediction accuracy.

Examining Managerial Misbehavior in Asian Banks through Loan Loss Provisions
Paolo Saona,Md. Abul Kalam Azad 한국증권학회 2020 Asia-Pacific Journal of Financial Studies Vol.49 No.4
This paper reviews the impact of corporate ownership concentration, insider ownership, and the development of regulatory and financial systems on the opportunistic behavior of managers to alter financial reporting. By using the panel data technique with a sample of banks from 25 Asian countries, the major findings indicate that ownership concentration as well as insider ownership positively impact the banks’ accrual-based earnings management. Results also reveal that an improvement in regulatory and financial systems restricts executives’ capacity to manage earnings. Islamic banking and IFRS adoption reduce the manipulation of earnings. Policy implications from the results are also discussed.
