Theoretical Bit Error Rate (BER) and channel capacity analysis are always of great interest to the designers of wireless communication systems. At the center of such analyses people are often encountered with a high-dimensional multiple integrals with quite complex integrands. Conventional Gaussian quadrature is inefficient in handling problems like this, as it tends to entail tremendous computational overhead, and the principal order of its error term increase rapidly with the dimension of the integral. In this paper, we propose a new approach to calculate complex multi-fold integrals based on the number theory. In contrast to Gaussian quadrature, the proposed approach requires less computational effort, and the principal order of its error term is independent of the dimension. The effectiveness of the number theory based approach is examined in BER and capacity analyses for practical systems. In particular, the results generated by numerical computation turn out in good match with that of Monte-Carlo simulations.

The WRKY transcription factors have important functions in plant-defense signalling networks. We isolated MdWRKY1 from the Chinese ‘Qinguan’ apple, which is resistant to Alternaria blotch or leaf spot. The MdWRKY1protein was targeted to the nucleus and activated the expression of a reporter gene, consistent with the functioning of a transcription factor. When plants were infected with the pathogen Alternaria alternata f. sp. mali, MdWRKY1 was induced dramatically. Similarly, treatment with hormones SA and MeJA increased transcription significantly. Overexpression in tobacco also enhanced resistance to Phytophthora parasitica var. nicotianae Tucker. These results suggest that MdWRKY1 is a positive regulator of the defense response in higher plants.

A loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) method for rapid detection of the food-borne Salmonella strains had been developed and evaluated in this study. The optimal reaction condition was found to be 65℃ for 45 min, with the detection limit as 1 pg DNA/tube and 100 CFU/reaction. Application of LAMP assays was performed on 214 food-borne Salmonella strains using a rapid procedure and easy result confirmation, where the specificity of LAMP and polymerase chain reaction (PCR)assays was 97.7% (209/214) and 91.6% (196/214),respectively; with a 100% specificity for both assays.

Autotoxicity in plants limits their growth and that of nearby plants of the same species, which has obvious implications in crop yield and quality. Silicon (Si) has been shown to increase plant tolerance to autotoxic stress. However, the physiological mechanisms underlying the effects of Si in alleviating autotoxicity during germination in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) are unknown. Cinnamic acid derivatives, such as 3-phenylpropionic acid (PA), are a class of autotoxins present in cucumber root exudates. Our objective was to investigate Si-induced autotoxic stress tolerance in cucumber seedlings by focusing on the effects of Si on the induction of antioxidant defense pathways. We found that PA treatment significantly reduced seed germination, radicle length, lateral root number, fresh weight, AsA and GSH contents, and the activities of SOD, CAT, and APX in cucumber seedlings, while it increased membrane permeability and levels of MDA, proline, O 2 - , and H2O2. Application of Si enhanced growth of PA-treated plants and significantly increased germination rate, radicle length, lateral root number, fresh weight, AsA and GSH levels, and SOD, CAT, POD, and APX activities. These results suggest that exogenous Si alleviates autotoxicity caused by PA during seed germination by increasing antioxidant enzyme activities and mitigating lipid peroxidation.

A loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) method for rapid detection of the foodborne Vibrio parahaemolyticus strains and related virulent factors had been developed and evaluated in this study. Six primers, including outer primers, inner primers, and loop primers, were specially designed for recognizing 8 distinct sequences on 3 target genes, which were tlh, tdh, and trh. The detection limits were found to be 100, 100 fg, and 1 pg DNA/tube for tlh, tdh, and trh, respectively. Application of LAMP assays were performed on 368 foodborne V. parahaemolyticus strains, the sensitivities of LAMP assays for the tlh, tdh, and trh were 100, 95.6, and 96.4%, and the negative predictive values (NPV) were 100, 84.7, and 93.1%, respectively; with a 100% specificity and positive predictive value (PPV) for all 3 target genes.

A series of temperature-sensitive N,N-diethylacrylamide-co-acrylic acid microgels were synthesized by modified surfactant-free emulsion polymerization method and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, turbidimetric method, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements. The SEM images showed that the as-synthesized microgels were monodispersed as spherical particles and the average size increased from 200 to 800 nm with the mole fraction of acrylic acid (AA) increasing from 0 to 0.40. Turbidimetric analysis and DLS investigation indicated that the volume phase transition temperature and the swelling ratio of the microgels had an upward trend that was associated with the higher incorporation of AA. Furthermore, horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was successfully immobilized on the microgel with the greatest swelling ratio (the mole fraction of AA equal to 0.40) to obtain an enzyme-microgel complex for the treatment of wastewater polluted by phenolic compounds. The immobilized HRP achieved a high removal efficiency of >96% toward phenol and was more thermostable and more easily stored and reused compared with free HRP.

Double haploids in lisianthus cultivars were produced using anther culture. The anther of ‘Art Peach’ wascultured on the Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium with 3% sucrose with auxin and cytokinin. The highest frequencyof calli developed from anthers (100%) and green plantlets per 100 calli (60 regenerants) was observed on the mediumcontaining 8 mg・L-1 N6-benzyladenine (BA) and 0.1 mg・L-1 naphthaleneacetic acids (NAA). When anthers were culturedon the medium supplemented with 2 mg・L-1 BA and 0.5 mg・L-1 NAA, 33.3% of calli formed plantlets. Using theanther culture, callus induction and plantlets regeneration in five cultivars were developed differently, suggesting thatthe genotype might predetermined anther culture response. These results indicate that a highly efficient new microprogationtechnique can be provided by anther culture in vitro for lisianthus.
