        Synthesis and Photo-Response of CuS Thin Films by an In Situ Multi-Deposition Process at Room Temperature: A Facile and Eco-Friendly Approach

        "Uniform hexagonal covellite CuS thin films were deposited at room temperature by an in situ solution chemical reaction using copper precursor solid films as cationic source and ammonium sulfide ethanol solution as anionic reaction medium. We investigated the influence of both ethanolamine and butanol contents used in copper nitrate/ethylene glycol monomethylether (EGME) cationic solution for the preparation of copper precursor solid films, deposition cycle numbers and annealing treatment of the as-grown thin films by X-ray diffraction (XRD), FESEM, energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence EDX, transmission electron microscopy–Selected area electronic diffraction (TEM–SAED), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and ultraviolet-visible-near-infrared (UV-Vis–NIR) measurements. Photo-response of the CuS thin films was characterized by linear sweep voltammetry. The deposited CuS thin films were used to sensitize TiO2 anodes for solar cell application. The results showed that the CuS films had two-dimension oriented, half-sheet shaped growing morphology standing disorderly but vertically to substrates, and the calculated texture coefficient TC(102) verified that the half-sheet shaped crystallites had (102) plane orientation. This in situ multi-deposition process had an average deposited rate of 9 nm per cycle, and a selfperfect function to grow smooth, uniform and 2D oriented morphology with increase in the dip-cycle numbers. The photocurrent density was 14.5 Ma/cm2 at 1 V versus Ag/AgCl electrode for the annealed CuS thin films. CuS-sensitized TiO2 solar cells had a maximum conversion efficiency of 0.224%."

        CircularRNA_104670 plays a critical role in intervertebral disc degeneration by functioning as a ceRNA

        This study was carried out to explore the roles of circular RNAs (circRNAs) in nucleus pulposus (NP) tissues in intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD). Differentially expressed circRNAs in IDD and normal NP tissues were identified based on the results of microarray analysis. Bioinformatics techniques were employed to predict the direct interactions of selected circRNAs, microRNAs (miR), and mRNAs. CircRNA_104670 was selected as the target circRNA due to its large multiplier expression in IDD tissues. After luciferase reporter and EGFP/RFP reporter assays, we confirmed that circRNA_104670 directly bound to miR-17-3p, while MMP-2 was the direct target of miR-17-3p. The receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve showed that circRNA_104670 and miR-17-3p had good diagnostic significance for IDD (AUC circRNA_104670 = 0.96; AUC miRNA-17-3p = 0.91). A significant correlation was detected between the Pfirrmann grade and expression of circRNA_104670 (r = 0.63; p = 0.00) and miR-17-3p (r = −0.62; p = 0.00). Flow-cytometric analysis and the MTT assay showed that interfering with circRNA_104670 using small interfering RNA (siRNA) inhibited NP cell apoptosis (p < 0.01), and this inhibition was reduced by interfering with miR-17-3p. Interfering with circRNA_104670 suppressed MMP-2 expression and increased extracellular matrix (ECM) formation, which were also reduced by interfering with miR-17-3p. Finally, an MRI evaluation showed that circRNA_104670 inhibition mice had a lower IDD grade compared with control mice (p < 0.01), whereas circRNA_104670 and miRNA-17-3p inhibition mice had a higher IDD grade compared with circRNA_104670 inhibition mice (p < 0.05). CircRNA_104670 is highly expressed in the NP tissues of IDD and acts as a ceRNA during NP degradation.

        Quantitative Reduction of Basilar Invagination With Atlantoaxial Dislocation by a Posterior Approach

        Objective: This study evaluated the feasibility and efficacy of quantitative reduction and fixation to treat basilar invagination (BI) with atlantoaxial dislocation (AAD). Methods: Posterior occipitocervical angle (POCA), occiput–C2 angle (Oc–C2A), clivusaxial angle (CAA), and C2–7 angle (C2–7A) were considered for quantitative reduction. Twelve patients with BI complicated with AAD received posterior interarticular release and individualized cage implantation to restore vertical dislocation. The POCA was adjusted using cantilever technology to further reduce the horizontal dislocation and adjust lower cervical vertebral angle. All patients received a radiological follow-up for ≥12 months. Improvements in spinal cord function were evaluated using Japanese Orthopedic Association (JOA) score. Results: All the patients received successful quantitative reduction for BI-AAD, and bony fusion was achieved without spinal cord injury after surgery for 12 months. The JOA score was improved significantly to 15.2 ± 0.9 twelve months after surgery (p < 0.01). Radiological follow-up revealed that individualized cage and POCA play vital roles in quantitative correction: (1) distance of the dens above McRae’s line and atlantodens interval were restored to normal level, respectively; (2) changes in Oc–C2 angle (ΔOc–C2A), C2–7 angle (ΔC2–7A), clivus-axial angle (ΔCAA), and POCA (ΔPOCA) were all caused by changes in axis tilt. Based on the changes of radiological parameter we deduced the formula for quantitative reduction by linear regression analysis: -ΔPOCA = ΔOc–C2A = -ΔC2–7A = ΔCAA. Conclusion: Quantitative posterior reduction by individualized cage and adjusting ΔPOCA is feasible for treating BI with AAD.

        Sodium content changes between 2015 and 2019 in restaurant menu items selected for sodium reduction in Daegu

        BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES South Korea has been conducting the Sodium Reduction Restaurant Project since 2015 to reduce sodium contents in restaurant menus. The purpose of this study was to analyze changes in the sodium content of menus as determined by the Daegu Sodium Reduction Restaurant Project between 2015 and 2019. MATERIALS/METHODS Intervention was aimed at reducing the sodium contents of over 10% of menu items in participating restaurants. On-site inspections and evaluations were conducted using a checklist, and reductions in sodium contents were determined by analyzing the salinities and sodium contents of menus after intervention. RESULTS Post-intervention salinities and sodium contents were significantly lower than baseline values in 2016 (P < 0.001), 2017 (P < 0.001), 2018 (P < 0.001), and 2019 (P < 0.001). However, sodium contents and salinities differences before and after intervention were not significant in 2015. Sodium contents of more than 20% of menu items offered by restaurants that participated in the Sodium Reduction Restaurant Project for 2 yrs starting in 2016 declined by 28.9%. On the other hand, the sodium reduction rate achieved by restaurants that participated for 4 yrs from 2015 reached 55.4%. The percentage of restaurants that participated in the project increased annually, though some failed to be designated as Sodium Reduction Restaurants because they did not meet sodium reduction rate requirements. CONCLUSIONS Positive correlations were found between duration of participation in the project and sodium reduction and designation rates. Sustainable long-term support at the national level is required to expand the project to other regions.

      • Hardware Design of Low Energy Consumption Wireless Senor Network Node for Monitoring Mechanical Vibration Signals

        Aiming at the increasing demand of the monitoring of mechanical vibration signals, by improving the existing Sensor Monitoring Network, a low-power wireless sensor network is designed. The data transmission efficiency is increased by using the compressed sensing (CS) technology to compress the mechanical vibration signals of the devices monitored by the network. To realize real-time processing of monitoring signals, the FPGA+DSP architecture is treated as the core of the equipment processing the mechanical vibration signals of wireless sensor network. The modified designs of the hardware circuit and logic circuit with regard to the data collection, sampling, transmission, processing and the store section are introduced initially. Further, the effects of the improved Sensor Monitoring Network are tested by the experimental study on the rotating equipment. The results show that the real-time processing can be well implemented and the power can be cut down to a certain degree.

        Use of condensed molasses fermentation solubles as an alternative source of concentrates in dairy cows

        Objective: The purpose of present study was to investigate the effects of condensed molasses fermentation solubles (CMS) on lactation performance, rumen fermentation, nutrient digestibility, and serum parameters of dairy cows. Methods: A total of 75 healthy Holstein cows with the same parity (milk production = 35±2.5 kg, body weight = 570±28 kg) were randomly selected and divided into 5 groups. One group served as control group (CON; no CMS), whereas the other 4 groups were CMS1 (accounted for 1% of the diet), CMS2 (2%), CMS3 (3%), and CMS4 (4%). All cows were fed regularly three times each day at 0800, 1600, and 2400 h. Cows received diet and water ad libitum. The experiment lasted for 60 days. Results: Results showed that the dry matter intake, milk yield, and protein of CMS2 were maximum and higher (p<0.05) than CMS4. The ruminal pH was observed less than 6 in CMS3 and CMS4 groups. No noticeable difference of microbial protein was found between CON and CMS2 groups, while the microbial protein in these groups was higher (p<0.05) than CMS3 and CMS4 groups. The apparent digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, and crude protein in CMS2 group was higher (p<0.05) than CMS3 and CMS4 groups. Compared to CMS3 and CMS4 groups, the CMS2 group increased (p<0.05) the serum concentrations of immunoglobulin G and immunoglobulin M on d 60. Conclusion: Therefore, it is practicable that CMS substitutes for a part of concentrates in lactating cows' diets, but higher addition of CMS (more than 3% of the diet) could decrease production performance of dairy cows as seen in the present study.

        The Preparation and the Effects of K/Na Ratio on the Electrical Properties of 0.95(Na0.96−xKxLi0.04)(Nb0.89Sb0.07Ta0.04)O3-0.05KNbO3 Lead-free Ceramics

        0.95(Na0.96−xKxLi0.04)(Nb0.89Sb0.07Ta0.04)O3-0.05KNbO3 (abbreviated as KxNLNST-KN, x =0.32 − 0.52) lead-free piezoelectric ceramics were prepared by using the conventional solid-statesintering method, and the intentional addition of a pre-calcined KNbO3 powder was used as asintering aid that might inhibit and compensate for the volatilization of alkali metals during thesintering process. The preparation of the ceramics and the effects of K/Na ratio on the structureand the electrical properties of these ceramics were studied in detail. Compared with the relativelyhigher sintering temperature of Li-, Sb-, and Ta-modified KNN ceramics reported in the literature,the dense ceramic samples were obtained at a reduced temperature of 1060 C, and the ceramicswith x = 0.44 possessed optimal properties: d33 = 298 pC/N, kp = 48%, Pr = 21.9 μC/cm2, andEc = 11.5 kV/cm.

        Reduced-Reference 3D Image Quality Measurement via Spatial to Gradient Domain Feature Aggregation

        Objective quality measurement of a three-dimensional (3D) image is a challenging issue in various 3D visual applications since it is infl uenced by multiple aspects such as binocular fusion, binocular rivalry and visual comfort, etc. Existing studies show that classic 2D and some 3D image quality measurement (IQM) are only perform well for symmetric distorted 3D images, but not able to evaluate the quality of asymmetrical distorted 3D images accurately. In this paper, based on the statistical characteristics of natural images and perceptual properties of human visual system (HVS), we propose a novel reduced-reference (RR) 3D quality assessment evaluator (R3DQAE) to deal with the characteristics of 3D images. Two key technical steps are involved in R3DQAE: the statistical characteristics of 3D images and the perceptual properties of HVS. Specifi cally, in spatial domain, the generalized Gaussian density fi ts of luminance wavelet coeffi cients and correlations of luminance and disparity wavelet coeffi cients are used to represent the statistical characteristics of 3D image. Furthermore, in gradient domain, the enhanced gradient magnitudes are computed by using neighborhood phase congruency information to weight the gradient magnitudes in a locally adaptive manner. Afterward, the entropy diff erencing of discrete wavelet transform coeffi cients of enhanced gradient magnitudes are extracted as the perceptual features of HVS. Finally, the qualities index of both the statistical characteristics of 3D image and the perceptual properties of HVS are combined to yield 3D image quality index. Experiments are performed on published 3D image quality assessment database show that the proposed model achieves highly competitive performance as compared with the state-of-the art some typical full-reference and RR 3DIQM models.
