        Chirality detection of amino acid enantiomers by organic electrochemical transistor

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Chiral recognition of α-amino acids is attracting increasing interest due to the importance of α-amino acids in protein metabolism as well as in food products and pharmaceuticals. Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) with gate electrodes modified with molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) films were fabricated and successfully used as highly selective and sensitive chiral recognition biosensors for <SMALL>D/L</SMALL>-tryptophan (<SMALL>D</SMALL> <SMALL>/</SMALL> <SMALL>L</SMALL>-Trp) and <SMALL>D/L</SMALL>-tyrosine (<SMALL>D</SMALL> <SMALL>/</SMALL> <SMALL>L</SMALL>-Tyr). The MIP films, which can specifically recognize and has an electrocatalytic effect on the oxidation of Trp and Tyr, together with the amplification function of an OECT, provide a highly sensitive and selective OECT biosensor. The sensor showed a linear response range for <SMALL>L</SMALL>-Trp and <SMALL>L</SMALL>-Tyr from 300 nM to 10 μM with a sensitivity of 3.19 and 3.64 μA/μM, respectivity. And the detection limit for <SMALL>L</SMALL>-Trp and <SMALL>L</SMALL>-Tyr is of 2 nM and 30 nM (S/N > 3). The selectivity factors of <SMALL>L</SMALL>-Trp, <SMALL>D</SMALL>-Trp, <SMALL>L</SMALL>-Tyr and <SMALL>D</SMALL>-Tyr to their enantiomers are 11.6, 3.5, 14.5 and 2.6, respectively.         Social-Aware Collaborative Caching Based on User Preferences for D2D Content Sharing

        With rapid growth of content demands, device-to-device (D2D) content sharing is exploited to effectively improve the service quality of users. Considering the limited storage space and various content demands of users, caching schemes are significant. However, most of them ignore the influence of the asynchronous content reuse and the selfishness of users. In this work, the user preferences are defined by exploiting the user-oriented content popularity and the current caching situation, and further, we propose the social-aware rate, which compre-hensively reflects the achievable contents download rate affected by the social ties, the caching indicators, and the user preferences. Guided by this, we model the collaborative caching problem by making a trade-off between the redundancy of caching contents and the cache hit ratio, with the goal of maximizing the sum of social-aware rate over the constraint of limited storage space. Due to its intractability, it is computationally reduced to the maximi-zation of a monotone submodular function, subject to a matroid constraint. Subsequently, two social-aware collaborative caching algorithms are designed by leveraging the standard and continuous greedy algorithms respectively, which are proved to achieve different approxima-tion ratios in unequal polynomial-time. We present the simulation results to illustratethe performance of our schemes.

        Hybrid Model for Renewable Energy and Load Forecasting Based on Data Mining and EWT

        Accurate renewable resource (RES) and load prediction play key roles in the power grid planning schemes, eff ective dispatch, and stable operation of power systems. The proportions of wind and solar energy continue to increase, leading to wind and light abandonment. Thus, the absorption of wind and photovoltaic power is particularly important. On the basis of accurately predicting load, wind power and photovoltaic output, the accommodation capacity of wind and photovoltaic power is analyzed. The work contains fi ve parts, as follows: (1) empirical wavelet transform (EWT) is used to decompose wind power and load. At the same time, isolated forest (iForest) and fuzzy C-means clustering (FCM) are used to process photovoltaic data. (2) Low frequency and intermediate frequency components of load are predicted by improved random forest (IRF). High frequency component of load is clustered by improved density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (IDBSCAN). The processing model is selected on the basis of the characteristics of each class sample. Each component of wind power are predicted by IRF. (3) Photovoltaic power of each category is predicted by IRF. (4) Diff erent components of load and wind power data are added. The photovoltaic power forecast data are synthesized according to the time point. (5) The forecast value of load, wind power, and photovoltaic output of a city are comprehensively evaluated by the summarized prediction level indicators. Three accommodation indicators are used for analyzing the accommodation capacity of wind power and photovoltaic. Results show that the forecasting methods of load, wind power, and photovoltaic power can generate better forecasting results than conventional methods. The analysis results of supplementary prediction level and accommodation indices provide reference for eff ective grid dispatching, sustainable, and healthy energy development.

        Imaging Features of Pediatric Pentastomiasis Infection: a Case Report

        We report here a case of pentastomiasis infection in a 3-year-old girl who had high fever, abdominal pain, abdominal tension and anemia. Ultrasound scanning of the abdomen revealed disseminated hyperechoic nodules in the liver and a small amount of ascites. Abdominal MRI showed marked hepatomegaly with disseminated miliary nodules of high signal intensity throughout the hepatic parenchyma on T2-weighted images; retroperitoneal lymphadenopathy and disseminated miliary nodules on the peritoneum were also noted. Chest CT showed scattered small hyperdense nodules on both sides of the lungs. The laparoscopy demonstrated diffuse white nodules on the liver surface and the peritoneum. After the small intestinal wall and peritoneal biopsy, histological examination revealed parenchymal tubercles containing several larvae of pentastomids and a large amount of inflammatory cell infiltration around them. The pathological diagnosis was parasitic granuloma from pentastomiasis infection.

        Myosin18B predicts favorable prognosis of cutaneous squamous-cell carcinoma

        Background Myosin18 family, including Myosin18A (MYO18A) and Myosin18B (MYO18B), are newly-identifed Myosins in Myosin superfamily. The expression and function of Myosin18 family in cancer progression is still controversial, and in cutaneous squamous-cell carcinoma (cSCC) is totally unknown. Objective To investigate the expression and prognostic signifcance of Myosin18 family in cSCC. Methods In this study, the expressions of MYO18 family, including MYO18A and MYO18B were detected in six pairs of cSCCs and corresponding normal tissues with qRT-PCR. MYO18A and MYO18B expressions and intracellular locations in 80 cSCCs were detected with immunohistochemistry. The clinical signifcance was evaluated by analyzing the correlation between MYO18 family and clinicopathological factors. The prognostic signifcance of MYO18 family was estimated by univariate analysis with log-rank test, and by multivariate analysis by Cox-regression model. Results The percentages of high MYO18A and MYO18B in cSCC were 43.75% and 36.25%, respectively. High expression of MYO18A (P=0.035) and MYO18B (P=0.032) were both associated with less tumor size. MYO18A had no signifcant infuence on sSCC prognosis (P=0.686), but low expression of MYO18B was proved to be signifcantly associated with poor outcome of cSCC (P=0.014). MYO18B was confrmed as an independent prognostic biomarker of cSCC (P=0.002), indicating the favorable outcome. Conclusion The expression of MYO18B was an independent prognostic biomarker of cSCC, predicting the favorable prognosis independently. Investigating the expression of MYO18B can help stratify the subset of high-risk cSCC patients for more potent treatment and post-operational surveillance.

        Deep Drawing of Cylindrical Cups Using Polymer Powder Medium Based Flexible Forming

        A novel flexible forming process—polymer powder medium based flexible forming (PPFF)—was presented in this research. Cylindrical cups with inner diameter of 8 mm were formed using rigid mould deep drawing and PPFF process, respectively. The blank material was pure copper C1100 with a thickness of 0.4 mm which was annealed at 450oC for 1 h in vacuum condition. The deep drawing experiments were carried out at room temperature under dry friction condition. Ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA), poly vinyl chloride (PVC) and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHWPE) were used. The influence of polymer powder type and weight on deep drawing force and limiting drawing ratio (LDR) were investigated. The results showed that the cylindrical cups were well formed by using PVC. The LDR reached 2.1 by using PVC, higher than rigid mould. The surface quality was also good, with the thinning rate much smaller than rigid mould forming.

        Model tests on bearing capacity and accumulated settlement of a single pile in simulated soft rock under axial cyclic loading

        The research reported herein is concerned with the model testing of piles socketed in soft rock which was simulated by cement, plaster, sand, water and concrete hardening accelerator. Model tests on a single pile socketed in simulated soft rock under axial cyclic loading were conducted and the bearing capacity and accumulated deformation characteristics under different static, and cyclic loads were studied by using a device which combined oneself-designed test apparatus with a dynamic triaxial system. The accumulated deformation of the pile head, and the axial force, were measured by LVDT and strain gauges, respectively. Test results show that the static load ratio (SLR), cyclic load ratio (CLR), and the number of cycles affect the accumulated deformation, cyclic secant modulus of pile head, and ultimate bearing capacity. The accumulated deformation increases with increasing numbers of cycles, however, its rate of growth decreases and is asymptotic to zero. The cyclic secant modulus of pile head increases and then decreases with the growth in the number of cycles, and finally remains stable after 50 cycles. The ultimate bearing capacity of the pile is increased by about 30% because of the cyclic loading thereon, and the axial force is changed due to the applied cyclic shear stress. According to the test results, the development of accumulated settlement is analysed. Finally, an empirical formula for accumulated settlement, considering the effects of the number of cycles, the static load ratio, the cyclic load ratio and the uniaxial compressive strength, is proposed which can be used for feasibility studies or preliminary design of pile foundations on soft rock subjected to cyclic loading.

        Influence of chlorinated disinfection by-products on transmission of antibiotic resistance genes in biofilms and water of a simulated drinking water distribution system

        The spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) caused by biofilm growth in drinking water distribution systems (DWDSs) poses a serious threat to human health. The influence of disinfection by-products (DBPs) on the distribution of ARGs and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) in different phases (biofilms and water) of DWDSs is unclear. In this study, the characteristics of microbial indices, trihalomethanes (THMs), haloacetic acids (HAAs), ARGs and MGEs in biofilms and effluents of simulated DWDS reactors were detected during 150 d of operation. During the mature biofilm periods of 90 d or 120 d, for both biofilms and effluents, seven categories of ARGs (except tetracycline) and MGEs were at their highest and lowest relative abundance in the entire operation cycle, respectively. The influence of DBPs on ARGs and MGEs in the DWDS was different in different phases. In effluents, DBPs showed a stronger relationship with ARGs compared with MGEs. THMs and HAAs had positive correlations with various ARGs, which indicated that DBPs affected the distribution of resistance genes. In biofilms, the influence of MGEs on ARGs was stronger than that of DBPs on ARGs. Thus, DBPs might be an important contributor to the enrichment and spread of ARGs in water.

        Minus-C odorant binding protein TcasOBP7G contributes to reproduction and defense against phytochemical in the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum

        Insect odorant binding proteins (OBPs) paly an important role in the recognition and transmission signals. One odorant binding protein gene, TcasOBP7G, was significantly up-regulated after exposure to eucalyptol. Never theless, the causal role of TcasOBP7G in Tribolium castaneum is still unclear. Here, TcasOBP7G was cloned and characterized from T. castaneum, aligning with the typical characteristic of Minus-C OBPs. The analysis of gene expression profile showed that TcasOBP7G is highly expressed at late larval and adult stage, with particularly high expression levels in ovary and testis of adults, suggesting that TcasOBP7G might be associated with reproduction of T. castaneum. Furthermore, RNAi of TcasOBP7G led to a decrease in spawning, while the development of gonads was normal, suggesting that TcasOBP7G may medicate the reproduction of T. castaneum. Additionally, the mRNA level of TcasOBP7G was significantly increased after exposure to eucalyptol, and knockdown of TcasOBP7G resulted in an increased susceptibility of T. castaneum to eucalyptol, indicating that TcasOBP7G is associated with the tolerance of T. castaneum to eucalyptol. Altogether, these results indicate that TcasOBP7G is required for both reproduction and defense against phytochemical in T. castaneum. This study will provide a theoretical basis for the development of novel control strategies based on the olfaction of insects.
