        Effects of chromium picolinate on fat deposition, activity and genetic expression of lipid metabolism-related enzymes in 21 day old Ross broilers

        Objective: This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of chromium picolinate (CrP) on fat deposition, genetic expression and enzymatic activity of lipid metabolism-related enzymes. Methods: Two hundred forty one-day-old Ross broilers were randomly divided into 5 groups with 4 replicates per group and 12 Ross broiler chicks per replicate. The normal control group was fed a basal diet, and the other groups fed the same basal diet supplemented with 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, and 0.8 mg/kg CrP respectively. The experiment lasted for 21 days. Results: Added CrP in the basal diet decreased the abdominal fat, had no effects on subcutaneous fat thickness and inter-muscular fat width; 0.2 mg/kg CrP significantly decreased the fatty acid synthase (FAS) enzymatic (p<0.05); acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) enzymatic activity decreased in all CrP groups (p<0.05); hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL) enzymatic activity also decreased, but the change was not significant (p>0.05); 0.4 mg/kg CrP group significantly decreased the lipoprotein lipase (LPL) enzymatic activity. FAS mRNA expression increased in all experimental groups, and the LPL mRNA expression significantly increased in all experimental groups (p<0.05), but not 0.2 mg/kg CrP group. Conclusion: The results indicated that adding CrP in basal diet decreased the abdominal fat percentage, had no effects on subcutaneous fat thickness and inter-muscular fat width, decreased the enzymatic activity of FAS, ACC, LPL and HSL and increased the genetic expression levels of FAS and LPL.

      • A NEW "MIDDLE" CRETACEOUS ZALAMBDALESTID MAMMAL, FROM A NEW LOCALITY IN JILIN PROVINCE, NORTHEASTERN CHINA

        중국 길림성의 Gongzhuling 시 근처의 새로운 백악기 화석지에서 산출된 화석은 두개의 불완전한 포유류 하악골을 포함하는데 이 표본은 태반류 Zalambdalestidae과에 속하는 새로운 속과 종이다. 화석지는 Songliao분지의 넓게 분포하는 Quantou층의 가창자리에 위치하는데 Songliao분지의 시대는 Aptian~Cenomanian으로 알려져 있다. 그러나 Quantou층이 Cenomanian 보다 더 젊을 것 같지는 않다. 두 하악골은 크고 납작한 첫 번째 앞니를 갖고 있는데 Kulbeckia kulbecke같은 종과 비교해 보면 원시적이고 진화적인 특징들이 흥미롭게 섞여 있다. 예를 들면, Gongzhuling 표본은 5개의 앞어금니 (거의 완전한 어금니 형태의 앞어금니)와 단지 3개의 앞니, 그리고 한 개의 낮고 단 뿌리의 송곳니를 가진다. 5번째 앞어금니와 첫 번째 어금니의 trigonids는 상대적으로 눌리지 않고 열려있는 형태다. 이 화석지는 “중기” 백악기 척추화석들에 대한 새로운 정보를 확보할 중요한 장소로 알려지게 될 것이며 가까운 미래에 이곳에서 새로운 포유류, 공룡, 그리고 다른 표본들이 기재될 것이다. Fossil specimens from a new Cretaceous locality near Gongzhuling City in Jilin Province, China, include two incomplete mammalian dentaries which represent a new genus and species referable to the eutherian family Zalambdalestidae. The locality is in basin-margin outcrops of the Quantou Formation, which is widely spread in the subsurface of Songliao Basin and which has been assigned ages ranging from the Aptian to the Cenomanian stages of the Cretaceous; it seems unlikely that the Quantou Formation could be younger than Cenomanian. Both dentaries possess an enlarged, procumbent first incisor combined with an interesting mosaic of both plesiomorphic and derived dental characters compared to taxa such as Kulbeckia kulbecke. For example, the new Gongzhuling specimens appear to show five premolars (including an almost fully molariform ultimate premolar) combined with only three incisors and a low but single-rooted canine. The trigonids on p5 and m1 are relatively open and non-compressed. This locality is likely to emerge as an important source of new information on "middle" Cretaceous vertebrates as additional mammalian, dinosaurian, and other specimens are described from it in the near future.

        Research on Partial Discharge Pattern Recognition in GIS Based on EFPI Sensor

        An EFPI fber optic ultrasonic sensor can be used for the detection and pattern recognition of partial discharge ultrasonic signals in Gas Insulated Switchgear. Compared with traditional piezoelectric sensors, it has many advantages, such as high sensitivity and strong anti-interference ability. Based on this, four typical PD models of the tip, metal particles, suspension and creeping surface were set up in the GIS cavity flled with 0.4 MPa SF6 gas, and the EFPI sensor was innovatively used to detect the discharge ultrasonic signal and extract the single ultrasonic pulse signal. The waveform features form a feature parameter database, and the probabilistic neural network algorithm and the support vector machine algorithm are used for pattern recognition and comparative analysis, respectively. The ultrasonic signal detected by the EFPI sensor has prominent features. On the basis of extracting the feature parameters, the two pattern recognition algorithms can achieve an average recognition rate of more than 85%, and the recognition efect of the support vector machine is better than that of the probabilistic neural network

        Blind QR Code Steganographic Approach Based upon Error Correction Capability

        A novel steganographic QR code algorithm, which not only coveys the secret into the widely-used QR barcode but also preserves the readability of QR content and the capability of error correction, is presented in this article. Different from the conventional applications for QR barcode, the designed algorithm conceals the secret into the QR modules directly by exploiting the error correction capability. General browsers can read the QR content from the QR code via barcode readers; however, only the authorized receiver can further reveal the secret from the QR code directly. The new mechanism can convey a larger secret payload along with adjustment of the QR version and error correction level. Moreover, the blind property allows the receiver to reveal the secret without the knowledge of the embedded position of modules. Experimental results demonstrate that the new algorithm is secure, efficient and feasible for the low-power QR readers and mobile devices.

        Rapid and Visual Detection of Vibrio parahaemolyticus in Aquatic Foods Using blaC<sub>ARB-17</sub> Gene-Based Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification with Lateral Flow Dipstick (LAMP-LFD)

        Vibrio parahaemolyticus is recognized as one of the most important foodborne pathogens responsible for gastroenteritis in humans. The bla<sub>CARB-17</sub> gene is an intrinsic β-lactamase gene and a novel species-specific genetic marker of V. parahaemolyticus. In this study, a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay combined with a lateral flow dipstick (LFD) was developed targeting this bla<sub>CARB-17</sub> gene. The specificity of LAMP-LFD was ascertained by detecting V. parahaemolyticus ATCC 17802 and seven other non-V. parahaemolyticus strains. Finally, the practicability of LAMP-LFD was confirmed by detection with V. parahaemolyticus-contaminated samples and natural food samples. The results showed that the optimized reaction parameters of LAMP are as follows: 2.4 mmol/l Mg<sup>2+</sup>, 0.96 mmol/l dNTPs, 4.8 U Bst DNA polymerase, and an 8:1 ratio of inner primer to outer primer, at 63℃ for 40 min. The optimized reaction time of the LFD assay is 60 min. Cross-reactivity analysis with the seven non-V. parahaemolyticus strains showed that LAMP-LFD was exclusively specific for V. parahaemolyticus. The detection limit of LAMP-LFD for V. parahaemolyticus genomic DNA was 2.1 × 10<sup>-4</sup> ng/μl, corresponding to 630 fg/reaction and displaying a sensitivity that is 100-fold higher than that of conventional PCR. LAMP-LFD in a spiking study revealed a detection limit of approximately 6 CFU/ml, which was similar with conventional PCR. The developed LAMP-LFD specifically identified the 10 V. parahaemolyticus isolates from 30 seafood samples, suggesting that this LAMP-LFD may be a suitable diagnostic method for detecting V. parahaemolyticus in aquatic foods.

        Relationship Between Syrinx Resolution and Cervical Sagittal Realignment Following Decompression Surgery for Chiari I Malformation Related Syringomyelia Based on Configuration Phenotypes

        Objective: Combined with different configuration types of syringomyelia, to analyze the correlation between syrinx resolution and changes in cervical sagittal alignment following Foramen magnum and Magendie dredging (FMMD) for syringomyelia associated with Chiari I malformation (CM-I), and to further explore the respective relationship with clinical outcome. Methods: A consecutive series of 127 patients with CM-I and syringomyelia who underwent FMMD in our center met the inclusion criteria of this study. Their clinical records and radiologic data were retrospectively reviewed. The Japanese Orthopedic Association (JOA) scoring system and the Chicago Chiari Outcome Scale (CCOS) were used to evaluate the surgical efficacy. The phenotypes of syringomyelia and the clinical characteristics of the patients were analyzed according to grouping by cervical curvature at baseline. Results: The preoperative straight or kyphotic cervical alignment is more common in the moniliform syrinx. After surgery, the syrinx resolution and cervical sagittal realignment in the moniliform group are more obvious, and the corresponding prognosis is relatively better. Spearman correlation analysis showed that the ΔS/C ratio (the change ratio of syrinx/cord) was positively correlated with the CCOS (p = 0.001, r = 0.897) and ΔC2–7A (the change of lower cervical angle) (p = 0.002, r = 0.560). There was also a correlation between the ΔJOA score (the change rate of the JOA score) and ΔC2–7A (p = 0.012, r = 0.467). Conclusion: After decompression surgery, syrinx resolution may coexist with the changes in the subaxial lordosis angle, especially for syrinx in moniliform type, and the relationship between syrinx resolution and cervical sagittal realignment might be valuable for evaluating the surgical outcome.

        Location Distribution of Fistulas and Surgical Strategies for Spinal Extradural Meningeal Cysts: A Retrospective Analysis of 30 Cases at a Single Center

        Objective: This study aimed to illustrate the features of fistula location distribution, surgical strategies, and outcomes in spinal epidural meningeal cysts (SEMCs). Methods: The authors searched and reviewed the medical records for cases of SEMCs. Imaging features, operative reports, and media were reviewed to accurately describe the surgical techniques employed. We recorded the level and laterality of the fistula according to the operative report and the media. Consistency analysis was performed on the dominant laterality of the cyst on preoperative axial magnetic resonance imaging and laterality of the fistula in the operative media or report. When cyst and fistula lateralities were the same, they were considered consistent. Finally, the Japanese Orthopedic Association (JOA) score was used to obtain patient-reported results at each follow-up. Results: Thirty patients with SEMCs were identified. Fistula repair was performed in all patients. Two patients experienced cyst recurrence after surgery and were repaired during the second surgery. Based on imaging findings, SEMCs mostly occurred in the thoracolumbar junction. Most of the fistulas (87.88%) were at the T12 or L1 levels. In patients with multiple adjacent SEMCs, the fistula may be at one end of the cyst rather than in the middle level of the cyst. A fistula laterality of 72.72% was consistent with cyst laterality. The JOA improvement rate was 61.84% ± 26.63%. Conclusion: Most fistulas were always located at the T12–L1 level as well as the middle level of the cyst, which is always consistent with cyst laterality. In patients with multiple adjacent SEMCs, the fistula may be at one end of the cyst. Cleft closure is key to healing SEMCs.

        Surgical Treatment of Ten Adults with Spinal Extradural Meningeal Cysts in the Thoracolumbar Spine

        Objective : To retrospectively analyze the clinical characteristics and surgical experience of 10 adults with spinal extradural meningeal cysts (SEMCs) in the thoracolumbar spine which may further provide evidence for surgical decision-making. Methods : Ten adults with SEMCs in the thoracolumbar spine were surgically treated and enrolled in this study. Clinical manifestations, imaging data, intraoperative findings and postoperative outcome were recorded. Results : Clinical manifestations of SEMCs included motor and sensory dysfunction of the lower limbs and urination and defecation disturbance. The cysts presented as intraspinal occupying lesions dorsal to the spine, ranging from the T8 to L3 level. Defects of eight cases were found on preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Selective hemilaminectomy or laminectomy were used to reveal the defect within the cyst, which was further sutured with microscopic technique. The final outcome was excellent or good in seven cases and fair in three cases. No recurrence was observed during follow-up. Conclusion : SEMCs are rare intraspinal cystic lesions. Radiography and MRI are clinically practical methods to assess defects within SEMCs. Selective hemilaminectomy or laminectomy may reduce surgical trauma. Detection and microscopic suturing of the defects are the key steps to adequately decompress the nervous tissue and prevent postoperative recurrence.

        The Optimum Dietary Essential Amino Acid Pattern for Male Taiwan Country Chicks

        The objective of this study was to estimate the optimum dietary essential amino acid pattern for male Taiwan country chicks. A series of experiments was conducted with chicks, 14 d of age, for 2 wks. A basal synthetic diet was established using a dose response test for all essential amino acids referring to the broiler requirements recommended by NRC (1994). Twelve chicks were sacrificed at the beginning to provide initial body nitrogen data, and every group of six birds received the basal diet or a diet with a deficiency in a single essential amino acid in twenty one treatments by intubation according to their daily metabolic body weight (MBW). Deposited body nitrogen was determined using comparative slaughtering. According to the daily intake from the limiting amino acid per unit of MBW and the body nitrogen accretion rates for every two deficient groups with the same limiting amino acid but at different levels, a corresponding straight line was computed for each essential amino acid to intersect with a horizontal line made by the body nitrogen accretion rate of the control group. The x coordinate of the intersection represented the daily requirement for growth plus maintenance based on MBW corresponding to the essential amino acid. The amino acid ratios can be considered as the optimum pattern of dietary essential amino acids. The results, expressed with respect to lysine = 100, were arginine 105, methionine 81, histidine 34, tryptophan 18, leucine 103, phenylalanine 135, isoleucine 69, threonine 65 and valine 79. This pattern could be utilized to compute the dietary requirements (g/kg feed) for all essential amino acids by multiplying by the requirement of a single essential amino acid cited from the literature.

        Reconstruction of the Cervical Lateral Mass Using 3-Dimensional-Printed Prostheses

        Objective: This study aimed to investigate the outcome of using 3-dimensional (3D)-printed prostheses to reconstruct a cervical lateral mass to maintain cervical stability. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed data of 7 patients who underwent cervical lateral mass reconstruction using a 3D-printed prosthesis, comprising axial and subaxial lateral mass reconstruction in 2 and 5 patients, respectively. Bilateral mass was reconstructed in 1 patient and unilateral mass in the remaining 6 patients. Results: Using a 3D-printed lateral mass prosthesis, internal fixation was stable for all 7 patients postoperatively. No implant-related complications such as prosthesis loosening, displacement, and compression were observed at the last follow-up. Conclusion: Reconstruction of the lateral mass structure is beneficial in restoring load transfer in the cervical spine under physiological conditions. A 3D-printed prosthesis can be considered a good option for reconstruction of the lateral mass as fusion was achieved, with no subsequent complications observed.
