In recent years, gonorrhea has been pandemic and remains one of the most common STDs in the world, especially in developing countries. For the detection of a more effective therapeutic regimen and assessing the prevalence of Penicillinase Producing Neisseria gonorrhoeae(PPNG), we have been trying to study the patients who have visited the Venereal Disease Clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul since 1980 by menas of the chromogenic cephalosporin method. In 1998, 93 strians of N. genorrhoeae were isolated, among which 60(64.5%) were PPNG. The prevalence of PPNG in Seoul, which had been decreased to 39% in 1996 after a peak of 74.3% in 1993, is increased to 64.5% in 1998.
정신분열병환자의 뇌량에 대한 신경병리적 고찰 : 확산텐서영상(Diffusion Tensor Image)기법의 적용

Objectives : Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is a new technique that can be used to visualize and measure the diffusion of water in brain tissue. It is particularly useful for evaluating white matter abnormalities. In this paper, we investigated the neuropathology of the corpus callosum in patients with schizophrenia through the new methods, diffusion tensor imaging. Methods : Diffuse tensor imaging was performed in 19 schizophrenic patients and 26 healthy controls. One complementary measure, fractional anisotropy (FA), which is considered to be sensitive indices of axonal integrity, was obtained from regions of interest in the five areas of the corpus callosum. Neuropsychological measurement also underwent for measurement of frontal lobe function in two groups. Results : There were no significant differences of FA in the DTI measures for either the schizophrenic patients compared with controls. FA was significantly decreased in women compared with men. Neuropsychological measurements such as Wisconsin card sorting test were correlated with FA of patients with schizophrenia. Conclusion : FA measures revealed no differences between schizophrenia and controls. The findings suggest that the structural integrity of white matter in patient with schizophrenia was not disrupted. The results are discussed in relation to previous studies reporting positive and negative findings. It is concluded that further studies using DTI in larger samples, improved and standardized methods of data acquisition and analysis are needed.
Identification of RAPD and AFLP Markers Linked to the Fruit Acidity Gene D in Peach (Prunus persica)

The fruit acidity is a very important characteristic to select promising seedlings in peach breeding programs. Bulked segregant analysis (BSA) with randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis was performed to detect markers linked to D gene using F₁ seedlings of low acid ‘Yumyeong’ × low acid ‘Baekhyang’. One RAPD marker coupled to D allele, designated as UBC423₂₁??, was identified from 578 decamer primers examined. In addition, BSA with amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) analysis of this progeny was performed to detect markers tightly linked to D gene. One AFLP marker, EAA/MCAC₃₃?, was identified through the 168 primer combinations tested. The co-segregation of two markers and D/d locus was verified in the 96 individuals of the F₁ progeny of ‘Yumyeong’ × ‘Baekhyang’. The markers UBC4232100 and EAA/MCAC₃₃? were found to be located at 22.1 and 1.1 cM, respectively, on the same side of the D/d locus. The tightly linked marker, EAA/MCAC₃₃?, was attempted to be converted to a sequence characterized amplified region (SCAR) marker. However, this marker could not be converted to SCAR marker. Although polymorphic SCAR could not be developed in the present study, the AFLP marker EAA/MCAC₃₃? could be useful for discriminating seedlings with high fruit acidity from peach seedlings at early developmental stage of the trees.
N-acetylcysteine stimulates osteoblastic differentiation of mouse calvarial cells

<P>Estrogen deficiency causes osteoporosis via increased generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and thus, antioxidants may prove to be the effective therapeutic candidates. We examined the effects of the antioxidant N-acetylcysteine (NAC) on osteoblastic differentiation in mouse calvarial cells. NAC (10–30 mM) enhanced alkaline phosphatase activity, mRNA expression of osteoblast differentiation-associated genes and mineralized nodule formation. It also increased expression of bone morphogenetic proteins-2, -4, and -7. The osteogenic activity of NAC was partially reduced by inhibition of glutathione synthesis. Since caffeic acid phenethyl ester did not stimulate osteoblast differentiation, it is unlikely that ROS scavenging activity of NAC is sufficient for osteogenic activity. We observed that NAC suppressed small GTPase RhoA activity and activation of RhoA by Pasteurella multocida toxin suppressed the osteogenic activity of NAC. These results suggest that NAC might exert its osteogenic activity via increased glutathione synthesis and inhibition of RhoA activation. J. Cell. 농촌진흥청 국립원예특작과학원에서는 자두와 살구의 종간교잡종인 플럼코트 품종 육성 프로그램을 1999년부터 진행해왔다. 이에 1999년에 동양계자두 품종인 ‘솔담’에 살구 품종인 ‘하코트’를 교배하여 64개의 종간교잡종자를 획득하고 다음해 23개의 교배실생묘를 득묘하였다. 2006년과 2007년에 교배실생 중 21개체가 개화하고 이 중 11개체가 착과되어 이들의 잎, 꽃 및 과실의 특성을 조사할 수 있었다. ‘솔담’은 타원형의 잎을 가진데 반해 ‘하코트’는 원형의 잎모양을 나타내나 이들의 종간잡종 실생 23개체 중 17개체는 타원형과 원형의 중간형태인 광도란형의 잎모양을, 6개체는 ‘하코트’와 같은 원형의 잎모양을 가지고 있었다. 개화한 21개체의 교배실생 중 13개체는 ‘솔담’처럼 흰색의 꽃을, 8개체는 ‘하코트’와 같이 분홍색의 꽃을 가지고 있었으나 개화한 모든 종간교잡실생은 ‘하코트’와 같이 자방에 털이 있었다. 비록 ‘솔담’과 ‘하코트’는 풍부한 꽃가루를 가지고 있었지만, 개화한 종간교잡실생 21개체 중에서 11개체의 실생이 꽃가루가 없는 웅성불임개체였다. 착과된 11개의 종간잡종개체 모두는 살구 ‘하코트’와 같이 과피에 미세한 털을 가지고 있었으며 6개체는 ‘솔담’과 같은 붉은색 과육을, 5개체는 ‘하코트’와 같은 오렌지색 과육을 가지고 있었다. 또한 착과된 11개체 중 8개체는 점핵성의 과실을, 3개체는 반점핵성의 과실을 가지고 있었으며 살구와 같은 이핵성 과실을 갖는 종간교잡실생은 하나도 없었다. 종간교잡개체의 양적형질의 평균치는 이들 교배친의 평균치에 근접하였으나 잎과 화병 길이는 양친의 평균치보다는 다소 짧게 나타났다. 또한 과실의 외관과 식미는 솔담과 하코트의 중간형태를 나타내는 것이 대부분이었으나 이들 교배친보다 우수한 품질을 갖는 과실을 생산해내는 교배실생도 있었다. 조사한 종간잡종실생들의 SSR분석결과, 이들 모두가 자두 ‘솔담’과 살구 ‘하코트’의 진정한 종간잡종실생들임을 DNA상에서 확인할 수 있었다. Fruit Research Division, National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science, Since 1999, interspecific crosses between Japanese plums and apricots have been made to breed new plumcot cultivars and to obtain basic data for stone fruit breeding at the National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science (NIHHS) of Rural Development of Administration (RDA) in Korea. A controlled interspecific cross between Prunus salicina Lindl. ‘Soldam’ (seed parent) and P. armeniaca L. ‘Harcot’ (pollen parent) was made in 1999, and 64 seeds were obtained. After sowing of those seeds in a greenhouse in the following spring, 23 seedlings were obtained. Eventually, 21 of 23 seedlings flowered, and 11 of 21 seedlings set fruits in 2006 and 2007. Morphological characteristics of these seedlings were investigated for two years. Whereas the leaf shape of ‘Soldam’ was elliptic and ‘Harcot’ was circular, 17 of 23 hybrid seedlings had obovate leaves and the others were circular like ‘Harcot’. Thirteen seedlings bore white flowers like ‘Soldam’ and 8 seedlings bore pink flowers like ‘Harcot’. All flowered seedlings had pubescent ovaries like ‘Harcot’. Although ‘Soldam’ and ‘Harcot’ had abundant pollens, 11 of 21 flowered seedlings had no pollens. All fruits of seedlings had short fuzzy fruit skin. Six seedlings had red flesh color like ‘Soldam’ and 5 seedlings had orange flesh color like ‘Harcot’. Eight seedlings were clingstone like ‘Soldam’ whereas 3 seedlings were semi-clingstone. None of the seedlings were freestone like ‘Harcot’. The mean of progeny for quantitative characters were near the parents’ mean. However, progeny mean of leaf and peduncle lengths were shorter than parents’ mean. The appearance and flavor of the interspecific seedlings were medium type between ‘Soldam’ and ‘Harcot’. However, there were some seedlings with excellent fruit quality. The polymorphism of two SSR markers confirmed that all seedlings were real hybrids between Japanese plum ‘Soldam’ and apricot ‘Harcot’.
