To investigate epidermiologic trend in maxillofacial fractures, We retrospectively studied 934 patients with maxillofacial fractures between 1981∼1987 and 1995∼1999. The results were compared in the previous group (Group A, patients treated between 1981∼1987) with those in the recent group (Group B, 1995∼1999). Also, we studied 516 patient between 1995∼1999 for occupation, associated injuries, treatment and complications. The sex ratio of men to women decreased (5.6 : 1 in Group A vs. 3.5 : 1 in Group B), and the largest age group was 20 to 29 years. There was the highest incidence in September and Fall. The most frequent cause of maxillofacial fracture in both Group A and B was traffic accidents. The distribution of fracture site did not change appreciably, but the frequency of midfacial fracture increased. In the recent group, the largest occupational group was salaried men, and the largest associated injuries of maxillofacial fracture was head and neck injury. Open reduction was used in 91% of the cases, and post-operation complications were infection, neurologic problem, malocclusion, and mouth opening limitation etc. Our results suggest that the clinical features of patients with maxillofacial fractures have changed during the past decade.
석탄회로 합성한 제올라이트에 대한 암모니아성 질소 흡착특성 조사

국내 석탄화력 발전소에서 폐기되는 석탄회를 이용하여 폐수 중 암모니아성 질소 제거용 흡착제를 제조하고자 NaOH를 반응물로 한 수열합성 반응을 이용, 제올라이트를 합성하였으며 제조된 제올라이트를 실제공정에 활용하기 위하여 흡착실험 및 공정모사를 수행하였다. 또한 흡착제를 구형으로 제조하여 암모니아성 질소의 등온 흡착 공정에 이용하였으며 이 결과 Langmuir식에 잘 일치함을 알 수 있었다. 고정층에서의 흡착 거동은 축 방향 분산흐름, 입자 내부에서의 표면 확산 및 Sips 흡착 등온식을 바탕으로 한 고정층 흡착모델의 주요 공정 변수에 대한 파과곡선을 잘 모사할 수 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. Zeolite was synthesized from coal fly ash produced by a domestic power plant and applied for the removal of ammonia from waste water. Zeolite was synthesized using a hydrothermal method involving an akaline reaction with NaOH, and adsorption experiments and simulations were conducted. Adsorption experiments with the pelletized spherical zeolite were carried out. The experimental data obtained from adsorption isotherms agreed well with the Langmuir equation. Also, most of the correlated results for the fixed bed model based on surface diffusion and Sips adsorption isotherms equation were consistent with the experimental data.

Heart sound segmentation into its components, S1, systole, S2 and diastole is the first step of analysis and the most important part in the automatic diagnosis of heart sounds. Conventionally, the Shannon energy envelope peak detection method has been popularly used due to its superior performance in locating S1 and S2. Recently, the HMM has been shown to be quite suitable in modeling the heart sound signal and its use in segmenting the heart sound signal has been suggested with some success. In this paper, we compared the two methods for heart sound segmentation using a common database. Experimental tests carried out on the 4 different types of heart sound signals showed that the segmentation accuracy relative to the manual segmentation was 97.4% in the HMM based method which was larger than 91.5% in the peak detection method.

A clinical decision on the treatment of asymptomatic carotid stenosis is challenging, unlike symptomatic carotid stenosis. Carotid artery stenting (CAS) has been recommended as an alternative to carotid endarterectomy (CEA) based on the finding that the efficacy and safety of CAS were comparable to CEA in randomized trials. However, in some countries, CAS is often performed more frequently than CEA for asymptomatic carotid stenosis. Moreover, it has been recently reported that CAS is not superior to the best medical treatment in asymptomatic carotid stenosis. Due to these recent changes, the role of CAS in asymptomatic carotid stenosis should be revisited. When determining the treatment for asymptomatic carotid stenosis, one should consider several clinical factors including stenosis degree, patient life expectancy, stroke risk by medical treatment, availability of a vascular surgeon, high risk for CEA or CAS, and insurance coverage. This review aimed to present and pragmatically organize the information that is necessary for a clinical decision on CAS in asymptomatic carotid stenosis. In conclusion, although the traditional benefit of CAS is being revisited recently, it seems too early to conclude that CAS is no longer beneficial under intense and systemic medical treatment. Instead, a treatment strategy with CAS should evolve to select eligible or medically high-risk patients more precisely.
