        Proposal of enhanced treatment process based on actual pilot plant for removal of micropharmaceuticals in sewage treatment plants

        This study was carried out to increase the treatment efficiency through the improvement of the conventional biological process, and to propose the optimal treatment direction. The optimal treatment conditions were derived based on the results of the spike damage tests in each single process. The removal efficiency of micropharmaceuticals was further increased when an ozone treatment process was added to the biological process compared to the single process. The soil and activated carbon adsorption process was introduced in the post-treatment to remove the micropharmaceutical residues, and the removal efficiency of the pharmaceduticals in the final effluent was more than 85% in spike damage experiment. In particular, the continuous process of biological treatment-ozone-adsorption could ensure the stable treatment of micropharmaceuticals, which had not been efficiently removed in the single process, as it showed more than 80% removal efficiency. Therefore, it is expected that the addition of the ozone oxidation and activated carbon adsorption process to the existing sewage treatment facilities can contribute to the efficient removal of micropharmaceuticals.

        We present a case of pernicious anemia without history of operation in 52 year old female. She suffered from oral ulcer, gum bleeding, nausea, vomiting, and beefy tongue. She had dysesthesia on the both arm and foot, and hypesthesia of global and stocking type by neurologic examination. Laboratory findings were as follows: serum cobalamin 9.1 pg/mL (normal range: 180-710pg/mL), anti intrinsic factor antibody (strong positive), antiparietal cell Antibody 1:10 (positive), first stage of Schilling test (1.4%). The findings of peripheral blood and bone marrow were compatible with megaloblastic anemia. We report a case of pemicious anemia with positive anti intrinsic factor antibody and antiparietal cell antibody.

        PGE₁(Prostaglandin E₁)의 국소도포가 Hairless Mouse 피부의 맥관형성에 미치는 영향

        An important aspect of plastic surgery is skin flap survival. Among the prostaglandins, PGE₁is used clinically to improve peripheral circulatory disturbances due to its action of augmenting blood flow by vascular smooth muscle relaxation and its strong inhibitory action of platelet aggregation. Clinically, many investigators found that the effect of PGE₁was prolonged for a long period even after short-term application. So a new hypothesis emerges that the prolonged effect of PGE₁may be due to neovascularization and not due to vasodilatation alone. This study was designed to clarify the mechanism of the prolonged effect of topical PGE₁with regard to angiogenesis. A total of 9 male hairless mice were treated with a topical application of PGE₁onitment (PGE₁powder mixed in hydrogen base) on the experimental side and only a hydrogen base on the contralateral control side of the back skin, respectively, for 7 days, once a day. Then they were divided into 3 groups. In group 1, specimens were obtained on the 7th day post-treatment using 3 mm size punch biopsy from both sides. In group 2, specimens were obtained on post-treatment 14th day. In group 3, specimens were obtained on post-treatment 28th day. The number of blood vessels were compared between the experimental side and control side with respect to neovascularization after PGE₁application using an image-analysis program under hemtoxyline-eosin stain. Treatment on the experimental side did not affect its contralateral mate, since there was no evidence of a systemic effect. From our experimental data, we could conclude that PGE₁may induce angiogenesis by topical application without systemic effect.

        <P>Radiotherapy (RT) is one of the major modalities for non???small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), but its efficacy is often compromised by cellular resistance caused by various mechanisms including the overexpression of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). Although cis???diamminedichloroplatinum(???) (cisplatin, CDDP) has been well characterized as an effective radiosensitizer, its clinical application is limited by its severe nephrotoxic effects. In our current study, we developed a CDDP???incorporated liposome (LP) conjugated with EGFR antibodies (EGFR:LP???CDDP) and evaluated its potential to radiosensitize EGFR???overexpressing cells without exerting nephrotoxic effects. EGFR:LP???CDDP showed higher cytotoxicity than non???targeting liposomal CDDP (LP???CDDP) in the cells expressing EGFR in vitro. In an A549 cell???derived xenograft tumor mouse model, increased delays in tumor growth were observed in the mice treated with a combination of EGFR:LP???CDDP and radiation. Notably, the EGFR:LP???CDDP???treated animals showed no differences in body weight loss, survival rates of nephrotoxicity compared with untreated control mice. In contrast, the use of CDDP caused lower body weights and poorer survival outcomes accompanied by a significant level of nephrotoxicity [e.g., decreased kidney weight, increased blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine, and pathological change]. These findings suggest the feasibility of using EGFR:LP???CDDP to radiosensitize cells in a targeted manner without inducing nephrotoxic effects. This compound may therefore have clinical potential as part of a tailored chemoradiotherapy strategy.</P>

        Culturing characteristics of Hanwoo myosatellite cells and C2C12 cells incubated at 37℃ and 39℃ for cultured meat

        To improve culture efficiency of Hanwoo myosatellite cells, these cells were cultured at different temperatures. Hanwoo myosatellite cells were compared with C2C12 cells to observe proliferation and differentiation at culture temperatures of 37℃ and 39℃ and determine the possibility of using them as cultured meat. Immunofluorescence staining using Pax7 and Hoechst, both cells cultured at 37℃ proliferated better than cultured at 39℃ (p < 0.05). When differentiated cells were stained with myosin and Hoechst, there was no significant difference in myotube thickness and Fusion index (p > 0.05). In Western blotting analysis, Hanwoo myosatellite cells were no significant difference in the expression of myosin between cells differentiated at the two temperatures (p > 0.05). C2C12 cells were no significant difference in the expression of myosin between cells differentiated at the two temperatures (p > 0.05). In reverse transcription and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) analysis, Hanwoo myosatellite cells cultured at 39℃ had significantly (p < 0.05) higher expression levels of MyHC, MYF6, and MB than those cultured at 37℃. C2C12 cells cultured at 39℃ showed significantly (p < 0.05) higher expression levels of MYOG and MB than those cultured at 37℃. To increase culture efficiency of Hanwoo myosatellite cells, proliferating at 37℃ and differentiating at 39℃ are appropriate. Since results of temperature differences of Hanwoo myosatellite cells were similar to those of C2C12 cells, they could be used as a reference for producing cultured meat using Hanwoo satellite cells.

        백서복부의 혈관경 다양화에 따른 도서형 피판들의 생존률에 관한 비교 연구

        The raw surface of the wound results in the imbalance of electrolytes, pain and loss of function and ultimately ugly scar. Therefore, the wound is, in principle, closed with the proper operative methods at the optimal timing. Simple wound is restored y primary wound closure but complex wound requires skin graft or flap. The flap surgery, which is limited in human, is better than the skin graft in function or aesthetics. So many anatomists and plastic surgeons have been studying and developing in this field with cadaver or animal. When new flap is developed or further studies of the flap are needed, the experimental study should be preceded with animal. The purpose of this study is to investigate the survival rates of flaps supplied with various vascular pedicles. Flaps, 2×5cm sized, were elevated from the abdomen of white rats(Sprague Dawley, 250-300gm). The twenty rats were divided into 4 groups, In each group consisted of five rats. a different vascular pedicle was included in the abdominal flaps. In group 1 the blood supply of the flap was made by the superficial inferior epigastric vein(SIEV) and drained out through the lateral thoracoepigastric vein ; in group 2, the superficial inferior epigastric artery(SIEA) was supplied the blood inflow and drained out through the lateral thoracoepigastric vein ; in group 3, the blood inflow was made by the superficial inferior epigastric artery(SIEA) and the blood outflow was made through the superficial inferior epigastric vein(SIEV) ; in group 4, the control group, no pedicle was included. The room temperature was 25 degrees Celcius. On each side of abdomen, 2×5cm-sized flap was elevate including panniculcus carvenosus. A thin silastic sheath was applied under the base of flap, and the flap was fixed. After the operation, the extremities and neck were splinted to prevent self-mutilation. After three weeks, the size of the survived flap was measured, and the percentage of survived flap was obtained by comparing the original size. A rat of the group 3 died during the experiment. So, surther one experimental study of the group 3 was performed. A total of 40 data was obtained from the 20 survived rats. The data were analyzed statistically. The survival rate of group 1 was 80.72% ; group 2, 92.39% ; group 3, 80.32% and group 4 was 0.94%, Namely, the group 2, as the model of the arterial inflow and venous outflow but enough circulation and perfusion accomplished, survived the best. Fair survival rate of group 1 strongly supports the feasibility of the new theory, the survival of flap can be ensured if sufficient flap perfusion is provided to maintain cellular intergrity, independent of the route of vascular supply. Comparing the group 3, although not statistical significance, the group 1 survived similar. This implies that the flap perfusion is the single most important factor in the flap survival. Based on the above experiments, I conclude the followings : at the selection of the rat abdominal island flap model, the superfical inferior epigastric artery to lateral thoracoepigastric vein is more ideal thatn the superficial inferior epigastric artery to superficial inferior epigastric vein which was as a conventional model. The bipedicled venous island flap, the venous blood inflow and venous blood outflow, is useful clinically.

        피부를 침범한 악성 타액선 종양의 치료

        The incidence of malignancy arising in the salivary gland is relatively low and rare cases of involvement of the overlying skin have been reported. These cases represent advanced cases radiotherapy. Therefore, adequate flap coverage rich in blood supply, and thus which ensures duribility to postoperative radiotherapy, as well as aesthetically acceptable appearance, is preferable in the reconstruction of the resultant soft tissue defect. We have experienced 3 cases of salivary gland malignancies involving the overlying skin and obtained satisfactory results after reconstruction using pectoralis major myocutaneous flap and forearm free flap.
