        Saturation improvement in hue-preserving color image enhancement without gamut problem

        This study proposes a method to improve the saturation of colors during hue-preserving color image enhancement without the gamut problem. First, the color of each pixel in an input image is projected onto one of three bisecting planes or bisectors of an RGB color cube to increase saturation. Then, that projected color is transformed into a target color with a designated luminance and the same hue as the original color. Experimental results show that the proposed method can enhance color images better than can recent hue-preserving color image enhancement methods.

        네 교사의 융복합교육 실행 경험의 이해

        본 연구에서는 융복합교육을 실행한 교사들을 대상으로 하여 심층면담을 통해 융복합교육 실천 과정에서 가졌던 경험은 무엇이며 그러한 실천 경험이 교사의 전문성 변화에 어떤 의미가 있는지를 교사들의 융복합교육 실천 과정에 대한 교사 면담 을 분석함으로써 탐구하였다. 분석 결과, 교사는 융복합교육을 실천하는 경험을 통해 융복합교육에 대한 관점이 확장되고 타 교과의 지식 영역에도 관심을 갖게 되었을 뿐 아니라 전체적인 안목을 기를 수 있었다. 또한 융복합교육 경험은 교사에게 자신의 수업에 대한 반성의 기회를 제공한 것으로 나타났으며, 교사 전문성에 있어서 교사 공동체 형성의 중요성을 깨닫게 하였다. 본 연구는 융복합교육을 담당하는 교사의 전문성 변화의 여건 마련을 위해 아래와 같은 제언을 남긴다. 첫째, 교사 전 문성 개발이 다양한 실행 공동체 속에서 융복합교육의 실행과 성찰을 통해 이루어질 수 있도록 지원하는 체계적인 시스템이 필요하다. 둘째, 교사의 실행 공동체를 가능케 하는 협력적인 학교 환경이 필요하다. 셋째, 대학 기반 교사 교육은 분과적 교사교육에서 융복합 기반의 교사교육으로 전환해야 하며 융복합교육 실천을 위한 교사의 적응적 전문성을 기를 수 있는 방향으로 재편성해야 한다. As an effort to understand teachers’ experiences of integrating an integrative and holistic (or yungbokhap) model of education into their classroom teaching, the present study qualitatively analyzed illustrative cases of four middle school teachers.1) Our analysis of rich qualitative data gathered through a series of observations and interviews revealed that the teachers’ experience of implementing a yungbokhap model of education provided them with a useful chance to broaden their pedagogical purview to find new connections between curricular topics and themes across different subject areas. Further, the teachers engaged in collaborative interactions with other colleague teachers, which helped them critically reflect on their instructional practices, thereby contributing to building and sustaining a school-based inquiry community of teachers. Implications for policy and practice were discussed regarding how to identify and provide the kinds of systemic support to effectively foster the development of both preand in-service teachers’ professional expertise in yungbokhap contexts of school reform.

        Biomechanical Analysis of a Pedicle Screw-Rod System with a Novel Cross-Link Configuration

        Study Design: The strength effects of a pedicle screw-rod system supplemented with a novel cross-link configuration were biomechanically evaluated in porcine spines. Purpose: To assess the biomechanical differences between a conventional cross-link pedicle screw-rod system versus a novel crosslink instrumentation, and to determine the effect of the cross-links. Overview of Literature: Transverse cross-link systems affect torsional rigidity, but are thought to have little impact on the sagittal motion of spinal constructs. We tested the strength effects in pullout and flexion-compression tests of novel cross-link pedicle screw constructs using porcine thoracic and lumbar vertebrae. Methods: Five matched thoracic and lumbar vertebral segments from 15 porcine spines were instrumented with 5.0-mm pedicle screws, which were then connected with 6.0-mm rods after partial corpectomy in the middle vertebral body. The forces required for construct failure in pullout and flexion-compression tests were examined in a randomized manner for three different cross-link configurations: un-cross-link control, conventional cross-link, and cross-link passing through the base of the spinous process. Statistical comparisons of strength data were analyzed using Student’s t -tests. Results: The spinous process group required a significantly greater pullout force for construct failure than the control group (p =0.036). No difference was found between the control and cross-link groups, or the cross-link and spinous process groups in pullout testing. In flexion-compression testing, the spinous processes group required significantly greater forces for construct failure than the control and cross-link groups (p <0.001 and p =0.003, respectively). However, there was no difference between the control and cross-link groups. Conclusions: A novel cross-link configuration that features cross-link devices passing through the base of the spinous processes increased the mechanical resistance in pullout and flexion-compression testing compared to un-cross-link constructs. This configuration provided more resistance to middle-column damage under flexion-compression testing than conventional cross-link configuration.

        Inhaled Corticosteroid and Secondary Glaucoma: A Meta-analysis of 18 Studies

        Purpose Guidelines and systematic reviews frequently warn of inhaled corticosteroid (ICS)-induced glaucoma. However, most of the published studies deny it. Methods We performed a systematic review of randomized, cohort, nested-case control, cross-sectional studies by using Meta-analyses of Observational Studies in Epidemiology statement. Four major databases, PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Search Manager, and the Web of Science Core Collection as well as meta-analysis were used. Studies comparing incidence, prevalence and intraocular pressure (IOP) between patients who were treated with and without ICSs were included. A random-model meta-analysis was performed using the inverse variance method. Results Out of 623 studies screened, 18 with 31,665 subjects were finally included. No significant difference between the 2 groups was observed for crude glaucoma incidence (odds ratio [OR], 0.95; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.86–1.04; P = 0.26; I 2 = 0%; P for heterogeneity = 0.57) as a primary endpoint, adjusted glaucoma incidence (OR, 0.90; 95% CI, 0.65–1.24; P = 0.64), crude prevalence (OR, 1.82; 95% CI, 0.23–14.19; P = 0.57), adjusted prevalence (OR, 1.22; 95% CI, 0.50–2.96; P = 0.66), IOP change during ICS treatment (mean difference [MD] +0.01 mmHg; 95% CI, −0.19–0.20; P = 0.95), and single measurement IOP (MD +0.37 mmHg; 95% CI, −0.24–0.97; P = 0.23). Time-to-event analysis for glaucoma development as one of the secondary endpoints (adjusted hazard ratio, 0.52; 95% CI, 0.28–0.96) suggested a reverse association between ICS and glaucoma. Conclusions The ophthalmological side effects of ICSs, such as glaucoma and intraocular hypertension, should not be exaggerated.

        The purpose of this study is to develop an academic listening curriculum based on core competency. Traditionally, since learning involved obtaining static and absolute knowledge and skills, the structure of knowledge played a major role in the curriculum. However, a rapidly changing society requires efficient problem-solving abilities regardless of circumstances. Therefore, attention has now shifted to core competencies in developing curricula. First, in order to develop a Korean academic listening curriculum, the concept and traits of core competencies will be revisited. Second, we will identify implications from the cases of curricula based on core competencies and establish the direction of developing our curriculum. Third, we will show how the Korean academic listening curriculum of Sungkyunkwan university is developed based on the core competency approach.

        Clinical and Radiological Clues of Traumatic Craniocervical Junction Injuries Requiring Occipitocervical Fusion to Early Diagnosis

        Objective: The purpose of this study is to find the clinical and radiographic characteristics of traumatic craniocervical junction (CCJ) injuries requiring occipitocervical fusion (OC fusion) for early diagnosis and surgical intervention. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 12 patients with CCJ injuries presenting to St. Michaels Hospital in Toronto who underwent OC fusion and looked into the following variables; (1) initial trauma data on emergency room arrival, (2) associated injuries, (3) imaging characteristics of computed tomography (CT) scan and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), (4) surgical procedures, surgical complications, and neurological outcome. Results: All patients were treated as acute spinal injuries and underwent OC fusion on an emergency basis. Patients consisted of 10 males and 2 females with an average age of 47 years (range, 18–82 years). All patients sustained high-energy injuries. Three patients out of 6 patients with normal BAI (basion-axial interval) and BDI (basion-dens interval) values showed visible CCJ injuries on CT scans. However, the remaining 3 patients had no clear evidence of occipitoatlantal instability on CT scans. MRI clearly described several findings indicating occipitoatlantal instability. The 8 patients with normal values of ADI (atlanto-dens interval interval) demonstrated atlantoaxial instability on CT scan, however, all MRI more clearly and reliably demonstrated C1/2 facet injury and/or cruciate ligament injury. Conclusion: We advocate measures to help recognize CCJ injury at an early stage in the present study. Occipitoatlantal instability needs to be carefully investigated on MRI in addition to CT scan with special attention to facet joint and ligament integrity.

        Effects of structure and oxygen flow rate on the photo-response of amorphous IGZO-based photodetector devices

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In this study, we investigated how the structure and oxygen flow rate (OFR) during the sputter-deposition affects the photo-responses of amorphous indium-gallium-zinc-oxide (a-IGZO)-based photodetector devices. As the result of comparing three types of device structures with one another, which are a global Schottky diode, local Schottky diode, and thin-film transistor (TFT), the IGZO TFT with the gate pulse technique suppressing the persistent photoconductivity (PPC) is the most promising photodetector in terms of a high photo-sensitivity and uniform sensing characteristic. In order to analyze the IGZO TFT-based photodetectors more quantitatively, the time-evolution of sub-gap density-of-states (DOS) was directly observed under photo-illumination and consecutively during the PPC-compensating period with applying the gate pulse. It shows that the increased ionized oxygen vacancy (V<SUB>O</SUB> <SUP>2+</SUP>) defects under photo-illumination was fully recovered by the positive gate pulse and even overcompensated by additional electron trapping. Based on experimentally extracted sub-gap DOS, the origin on PPC was successfully decomposed into the hole trapping and the V<SUB>O</SUB> ionization. Although the V<SUB>O</SUB> ionization is enhanced in lower OFR (O-poor) device, the PPC becomes more severe in high OFR (O-rich) device because the hole trapping dominates the PPC in IGZO TFT under photo-illumination rather than the V<SUB>O</SUB> ionization and more abundant holes are trapped into gate insulator and/or interface in O-rich TFTs. Similarly, the electron trapping during the PPC-compensating period with applying the positive gate pulse becomes more prominent in O-rich TFTs. It is attributed to more hole/electron traps in the gate insulator and/or interface, which is associated with oxygen interstitials, or originates from the ion bombardment-related lower quality gate oxide in O-rich devices.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Effect of structure and oxygen flow rate on photo-response in IGZO-based photodetector. </LI> <LI> Decomposition of persistent photoconductivity based on extracted sub-gap DOS. </LI> <LI> Quantitative analysis of photo-response including the PPC-eliminating technique. </LI> </UL> </P>

        Ultrasound-guided erector spinae plane block for pain management after gastrectomy: a randomized, single-blinded, controlled trial

        Background: Open gastrectomy causes severe postoperative pain. Therefore, we investigated the opioid-sparing effect of the ultrasound-guided bilateral erector spinae plane block (ESPB) after open gastrectomy. Methods: Adult patients undergoing open gastrectomy were randomly assigned to either the ESPB group (ESPB + fentanyl based intravenous patient-controlled analgesia [IV-PCA]) or a control group (fentanyl based IV-PCA only). The primary outcome was total fentanyl equivalent consumption during the first 24 hour postoperatively. Secondary outcomes were pain intensities using a numeric rating scale at the postanesthesia care unit (PACU) and at 3, 6, 12, and 24 hour postoperatively, and the amount of fentanyl equivalent consumption during the PACU stay and at 3, 6, and 12 hour postoperatively, and the time to the first request for rescue analgesia. Results: Fifty-eight patients were included in the analysis. There was no significant difference in total fentanyl equivalent consumption during the first 24 hour postoperatively between the two groups (P = 0.471). Pain intensities were not significantly different between the groups except during the PACU stay and 3 hour postoperatively (P < 0.001, for both). Time to the first rescue analgesia in the ward was longer in the ESPB group than the control group (P = 0.045). Conclusions: Ultrasound-guided ESPB did not decrease total fentanyl equivalent consumption during the first 24 hour after open gastrectomy. It only reduced postoperative pain intensity until 3 hour postoperatively compared with the control group. Ultrasound-guided single-shot ESPB cannot provide an efficient opioid-sparing effect after open gastrectomy.
