Proceedings of International Symposium on East-West Medicine, Seoul. 244-254, 1999.-Obesity can be defined as a metabolic disease due to an increased state of fat tissues caused by an imbalance of calorie intake and use. Recently, in Korea by improvement and westernization of food intake, along with decrease in exercise activities, the prevalence of obesity has increased greatly. Our objectives were to study stability and effects of decrease in body fat by administering red ginseng compound preparation (known to have body fat decreasing effects in laboratory animals) to obesity patients on low calorie diets. Changes in weight and body fat were measured while carrying out calorie-restricted diets on patients for 4 weeks, then administering red ginseng compound preparation for another 4 weeks. The patients were 20 people whose BMI were 25kg/㎡ or over and whose percent body fat was also 30% or over when tested by bioelectrical conductivity. 1. Changes in weight were from 70.04kg(base line) to 67.43kg(after taking red ginseng compound preparation). 2. In similar sense, BMI decreased from 27.12kg/㎡(base line) to 26.56kg/㎡(after dieting), and further to 26.01kg/㎡ (after taking red ginseng compound preparation). The BMI seemed to decrease significantly compared to the baseline after the use of red ginseng compound. 3. Waist hip ratio was changed from 0.8858(base line) to 0.8728, but it was statistically insignificant. 4. The percent body fat was 35,16%(base line), 33.87%(after dieting), and 31.68%(after taking red ginseng compound preparation). 5. Complete blood cell count and blood chemisrty remained unaffected by the administration. 6. In concern to endocrinologic studies, T3 decreased from 118.7 to 98.2ng/dL, and T4 increased from 8.8 to 9.2㎕/ dL. Epinephrine showed a tendency to decreased from 0.27 to 0.25 ng/mL, and norepinephrine increased from 0.39 to 0.44ng/mL. 7. Leptin was not changed. 8. Some patients complained adverse effects; constipation(5 patients, may be due to diet therapy), fatigue (2 patients), pruritus(2 patients), flushing(s patients), dizziness(3 patients) and epigastric discomfort(2 patients). However their symptoms were mild, so medication did not stopped. In conclusion, loss of weight without significant side effects was observed during low calorie diet and red ginseng compound preparation administration. This is thought to be in relation to sympathetic nerve system rather than adrenal gland. Also, further long0term studies should be required, since the observed results were based on short-term changes in weight.

흡연에 의한 급성 호산구성 폐렴 2예

최근 흡연을 시작한 젊은 성언에서 급성 호산구성 폐렴의 발생에 대한 증례가 보고되고 있다. 급성 호산구성 폐렴은 대개 발열을 동반하기 때문에 초기에는 감염성 폐렴으로 잘못 진단, 치료되는 경우가 많다. 아직 정확한 병태 생리 및 조직학적 소견은 밝혀져 있지 않지만 병력 청취 및 임상 양상, 방사선 소견의 관찰을 통해 급성 호산구성 폐렴을 의심하고, 진단을 위해 기관지 폐포 세척액 검사를 시행한다면 좀 더 쉽게 진단 내릴 수 있을 것이다. 본 저자들은 최근 처음 시작한 흡연에 의해 발생한 급성 호산구성 폐렴을 진단하고, 스테로이드를 투여하여 성공적으로 치료한 환자 2예를 경험하였기에 이를 문헌 고찰과 함께 보고하는 바이다. Acute eosinophilic pneumonia(AEP) is characterized by acute febrile respiratory illness associated with diffuse pulmonary infiltration and pulmonary eosinophilia. The specific etiology for acute eosinophilic pneumonia is elusive. By some investigators, cigarette smoking is suggested as a causative substance which can cause AEP. In recent, the authors experienced two cases of AEP following cigarette smoking. Both cases had characteristic features including age around 20 years, new onset smoking before occurance of AEP, diffuse infiltration on chest radiography, pulmonary eosinophilia based on bronchoalveolar lavage and acute improvement after steroid therapy. These clinical features are resemble with previous smoking induced AEP case reports. Base on these clinical features, cigarette smoking associated AEP could be diagnosed more easily.

The diagnostic requirements were suggested and explained regarding the systems of differentiation of symptoms and signs in the second year study of standardization and unification of the terms and conditions used for diagnosis in oriental medicine. The systems were as follows; - differential diagnosis according to condition of body fluid, differentiation of syndromes according to the state of qi and blood, differential diagnosis according to relative excessiveness or deficiency of yin and yang(氣血陰陽津液辨證) - differentiation of diseases according to pathological changes of the viscera and their interrelation - analyzing and differentiating of febrile diseases in accordance with the theory of the six channels(傷寒辨證) The individual diagnosis pattern was arranged by the diagnostic requirements in the following order : another name(異名), notion of diagnosis pattern, index of differentiation of symptoms and signs(辨證指標), the main point of diagnosis, analysis of diagnosis pattern(證候分析), discrimination of diagnosis pattern(證候鑑別), a way of curing a diseases(治法), prescription(處方), herb in common use(常用藥物), diseases appearing the diagnosis pattern(常見疾病), documents(文獻調査). This study was carried out on the basis of the Chinese documents and references.

Can molasses, the most widely used carbon source for the industrial fermentation of L-lysine, usually contains a high concentration of calcium ions which tend to cause scaling problem in the recovery process. To remove the calcium ions, cane molasses was pretreated with sulfuric acid by adjusting the pH to 2.5~3.5. When the pretreated solution was directly heat-sterilized and used in the fermentation, a significant reduction in L-lysine production was observed. In this paper, we proved that sucrose is a superior substrate for L-lysine fermentation of that of glucose or fructose and that the above-mentioned decrease of L-lysine production was caused by the hydrolysis of sucrose in the molasses when the molasses was heat-sterilized at a low pH. The problem was overcome by adjusting the pH of molasses to neutral before sterilization.

The experimemtal binodal curve and tie line data were determined for ternary systems of 2-propanol-water with benzene, toluene and n-butyl acetate as solvents at 25℃. These experimental data were compared with values predicted from UNIFAC model, using group contribution method. From these results the deviation between experimental and calculated equilibrium composition were very small, so it was proved that UNIFAC is good model to predect multicomponent equilibria.

In this study, a fiber-optic bundle sensor has been developed using water-equivalent organic scintillating fibers for photon beam measurement. Beam penumbra and percent depth doses(PDD) are measured according to the depth of the photon beam. This sensor has many advantages such as high resolution, real-time measurement and ease of calibration over conventional radiation measurement devices.

The main stream of criticism on postmodernism in Korea has attacked it as a cultural logic of the post-industrial Western society, confusing "postmodernity" with "postmodernism," and trying to answer the question "Does the so-called postmodernism have some intrinsic values?" Another stream has focused its concern on the authorial origin of the cultural phenomenon, or its relationship to modernism and post-structuralism. But to understand it more properly, we should question "What is postmodernism?" rather than "Is postmodernism valuable to us?" or "Who started the movement?" The postmodern culture which has developed since around 1945 in the Western hemisphere illustrated many negative aspects of a life-denying culture, despite its material prosperity. Its most unbearable attributes are sterile homogeneity, uncertainty, absurdity, mercantile ethic, absence of moral values, irrationality, innocent victim, entropy in history, exhaustion, overwhelming mechanical forces, mercantilization of knowledge and language, and so on. These may be defined as the negative side of "postmodernity," which has been nourished by logocentricism in the postmodern culture, and embodied as mass culture, media society, the society of spectacles, the bureaucratic society of controlled consumption, postindustrial society, and the highly industrial society. Postmoderuism is a dominant attitude toward the postmodern maimed, logocentric culture. Postmodernists, whose potent progenitor is Nietzsche, were at odds with the predominant values of the postmodern age, and rocked the very metaphysical footings of the postmodern culture by the roots. They "deconstructed" such concepts of the "subject," "logos," "history," "rationality," "truth," "representation," "mimesis," "structuralistic language," "transcendental idea," and so on, as the very source of values in the metaphysical and symbolic "system" of logocentricism. They probed another sources of values in the primitiveness and the peripheral side of the human mind and character, and in the elementary laws of the universe. Postmodernism in literature shared the deconstructive spirit of the postmodernists in other areas. Postmodernist writers tried to tear away all the masks of "rational" ideals and explored the ways in which human beings made and believed in such masks. They accepted, like postmodernist philosophers, psychologists, and historians, the "peripheral," "non-rational" side of human nature as important and noble as the rational characteristics. They pursued the liberation of the ecstasy and wisdom of the "unreason," which has been confined by the various kinds of "systems" of logocentricism. They valued the positive function of instincts and desires in human life, and thought that limiting human activity to strictly rational behavior is impoverishing human life and experience. Or, at least, they waged a fierce struggle to embrace the genetic absurdity of existence itself, recognizing that life is at the mercy of "chance" rather than "causality." As a flow of postmodernist criticism against mechanical rationality as the major contributory element to the decadence of Western culture, postmodern American poetry called in. question the basic tenets of "logopoeia," an Apollonian poetics which emphasizes art as. "machine" representing reality rather than art as life. It denied decadent symbolic poetry, transcendental design drawn from the omniscient point of view, aesthetic distance, representation, closed form, mastering purpose, transcendental logos. Rather, it preferred metonymic vase, playfulness subject to chance, pure subjectivity, immediacy, open form, silencing dispersal, absence of truth. It was the poetry of resistance groping for "melopoeia," a Dionysian poetics which emphasizes openness, tangentialization, untotalization, nakedness, minimalism, immediacy, the raw, anti-system, and primitiveness. It was not an ego-building process by means of negation of nature, but an enlarging of the temple of life by means of purgation of the ego-ridden self.
