This study investigated the experience and practice of elementary school students on nutrition education. The data were collected from 217 male and female students attending 5-6th grade elementary schools in Seoul and Kyunggi-Do from March to June 2007, interviewing face to face by a nutrition teacher and 3 interns of a nutrition teacher. The results were as follows: 86.5% of the subjects learned about ‘Table etiquette’, ‘Reasons for eating fruits and vegetables’ (78.7%), ‘Food waste and environment’ (72.3%), ‘Healthy snacks’ (55.7%), ‘Food sanitation’ (52.3%), ‘Food culture of foreign countries’ (48.1%). Nutrition education experience was significantly different by gender. A total of 43.5% boys responded that they never learned about ‘basic food preperation’ (p < 0.01). They had learned ‘Nutrients for body’ and ‘Food waste and environment’ in school, ‘Healthy weight loss’, ‘Food culture of foreign countries’, ‘Food circulation’ on television, Most content (‘Table etiquette’, ‘Simple cooking’, ‘Food sanitati n’, ‘Eating behaviors for health’, ‘Reasons for eating fruits and vegetables’, ‘Healthy snacks’) was learned from parents. The practice after nutrition education was higher in ‘Table etiquette’ (2.14), ‘Eating fruits and vegetables’ (2.07) than others compared with education experience. The most reason of non-practice on nutrition information was ‘Troublesome’. In ‘Nutrients for body’, a boy answered ‘Difficult for practice’ 20.0%, a girl answered ‘Difficult to understand’ 32.6%, showing a significant difference between the gender groups (p < 0.001). They remembered the ‘Nutrients for body’ (49.6%), ‘Food sanitation’ (44.5%) because of ‘important content’,‘Basic food preparation’ (40.6%), ‘Food culture of foreign countries’ (36.3%) because of ‘interesting content’, ‘Healthy weight loss’ (52.0%), ‘Eating behavior for health’ (44.5%) and ‘Healthy snacks’ (33.7%) because of ‘need for my health’.

<P><B>Background</B></P><P>Vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA), a critical mediator of tumor angiogenesis, is a well-characterized target of hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1). Murine arrest-defective protein 1A (mARD1A<SUP>225</SUP>) acetylates HIF-1α, triggering its degradation, and thus may play a role in decreased expression of VEGFA.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>We generated Apc<SUP>Min/+</SUP>/mARD1A<SUP>225</SUP> transgenic mice and quantified growth of intestinal polyps. Human gastric MKN74 and murine melanoma B16F10 cells overexpressing mARD1A<SUP>225</SUP> were injected into mice, and tumor growth and metastasis were measured. VEGFA expression and microvessel density in tumors were assessed using immunohistochemistry. To evaluate the role of mARD1A<SUP>225</SUP> acetylation of Lys532 in HIF-1α, we injected B16F10-mARD1A<SUP>225</SUP> cell lines stably expressing mutant HIF-1α/K532R into mice and measured metastasis. All statistical tests were two-sided, and <I>P</I> values less than .05 were considered statistically significant.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>Apc<SUP>Min/+</SUP>/mARD1A<SUP>225</SUP> transgenic mice (n = 25) had statistically significantly fewer intestinal polyps than Apc<SUP>Min/+</SUP> mice (n = 21) (number of intestinal polyps per mouse: Apc<SUP>Min/+</SUP> mice vs Apc<SUP>Min/+</SUP>/mARD1A<SUP>225</SUP> transgenic mice, mean = 83.4 vs 38.0 polyps, difference = 45.4 polyps, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 41.8 to 48.6; <I>P</I> < .001). The growth and metastases of transplanted tumors were also statistically significantly reduced in mice injected with mARD1A<SUP>225</SUP>-overexpressing cells than in mice injected with control cells (<I>P</I> < .01). Moreover, overexpression of mARD1A<SUP>225</SUP> decreased VEGFA expression and microvessel density in tumor xenografts (<I>P</I> < .04) and Apc<SUP>Min/+</SUP> intestinal polyps (<I>P</I> = .001). Mutation of lysine 532 of HIF-1α in B16F10-mARD1A<SUP>225</SUP> cells prevented HIF-1α degradation and inhibited the antimetastatic effect of mARD1A<SUP>225</SUP> (<I>P</I> < .001).</P><P><B>Conclusion</B></P><P>mARD1A<SUP>225</SUP> may be a novel upstream target that blocks VEGFA expression and tumor-related angiogenesis.</P>

A variety of benzylidenethiazole analogs have been demonstrated to inhibit 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX). Here we report the anti-atherogenic potential of 5-(4-hydroxy- 2,3,5-trimethylbenzylidene) thiazolidin-2,4-dione (HMB-TZD), a benzylidenethiazole analog, and its potential mechanism of action in LDL receptor-deficient (Ldlr-/-) mice. HMB-TZD Treatment reduced leukotriene B4 (LTB4) production significantly in RAW264.7 macrophages and SVEC4-10 endothelial cells. Macrophages or endothelial cells pre-incubated with HMB-TZD for 2 h and then stimulated with lipopolysaccharide or tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) displayed reduced cytokine production. Also, HMB-TZD reduced cell migration and adhesion in accordance with decreased proinflammatory molecule production in vitro and ex vivo. HMB-TZD treatment of 8-week-old male Ldlr-/- mice resulted in significantly reduced atherosclerotic lesions without a change to plasma lipid profiles. Moreover, aortic expression of pro-atherogenic molecules involved in the recruitment of monocytes to the aortic wall, including TNF-α , MCP-1, and VCAM-1, was downregulated. HMB-TZD also reduced macrophage infiltration into atherosclerotic lesions. In conclusion, HMB-TZD ameliorates atherosclerotic lesion formation possibly by reducing the expression of proinflammatory molecules and monocyte/macrophage recruitment to the lesion. These results suggest that HMB-TZD, and benzylidenethiazole analogs in general, may have therapeutic potential as treatments for atherosclerosis.

Bevacizumab (Avastin(R)) is a monoclonal antibody against the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) receptor that increases the overall survival rate when added to standard chemotherapy regimens in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer. The known toxicities of bevacizumab are hypertension, proteinuria, wound healing complications, arterial thrombosis, bleeding, and gastrointestinal complications. Especially ischemic colitis can rapidly develop into bowel perforation, so an emergency operation often is needed. Recently, a 65-year-old male patient developed ischemic pancolitis after FOLFOX (85 mg/m2 Oxaliplatin, d1; 200 mg/m2 Leucovorin, d1; 400 mg/m2 5-FU iv bolus, d1-2; and 600 mg/m2 5-FU, d1-2, every two wk) and Bevacizumab combination chemotherapy was administered. However, he recovered after early conservative care without surgery. We report this case with a review of literature. (Korean J Gastroenterol 2011;58:42-46)
Ninjurin1 Deficiency Attenuates Susceptibility of Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis in Mice

<P>Ninjurin1 is a homotypic adhesion molecule that contributes to leukocyte trafficking in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), an animal model of multiple sclerosis. However, <I>in vivo</I> gene deficiency animal studies have not yet been done. Here, we constructed Ninjurin1 knock-out (KO) mice and investigated the role of Ninjurin1 on leukocyte trafficking under inflammation conditions such as EAE and endotoxin-induced uveitis. Ninjurin1 KO mice attenuated EAE susceptibility by reducing leukocyte recruitment into the injury regions of the spinal cord and showed less adhesion of leukocytes on inflamed retinal vessels in endotoxin-induced uveitis mice. Moreover, the administration of a custom-made antibody (Ab<SUB>26–37</SUB>) targeting the Ninjurin1 binding domain ameliorated the EAE symptoms, showing the contribution of its adhesion activity to leukocyte trafficking. In addition, we addressed the transendothelial migration (TEM) activity of bone marrow-derived macrophages and Raw264.7 cells according to the expression level of Ninjurin1. TEM activity was decreased in Ninjurin1 KO bone marrow-derived macrophages and siNinj1 Raw264.7 cells. Consistent with this, GFP-tagged mNinj1-overexpressing Raw264.7 cells increased their TEM activity. Taken together, we have clarified the contribution of Ninjurin1 to leukocyte trafficking <I>in vivo</I> and delineated its direct functions to TEM, emphasizing Ninjurin1 as a beneficial therapeutic target against inflammatory diseases such as multiple sclerosis.</P>

Understanding the fluctuation of population size plays a key role in the study of avian ecology and conservation biology. For recent several years, the number of great cormorants (Phalacrocorax carbo) wintering in Hangang river has considerably increased. However, the origin of these birds and the impact of them on the local environments is poorly known. Using the data from the bird census for winter migratory birds implemented by the National Institute of Biological Resources, we analyzed 17-year distribution data for cormorants acquired from over the country in order to infer the origin of Hangang population. Population size fluctuation for common mergansers (Mergus merganser) that have a similar foraging strategy to cormorants and northern shovelers (Anas clypeata) that have a different foraging strategy from cormorants were also analyzed to further understand the cause and effect of population size fluctuation of cormorants in Hangang. We found that the population size of cormorants appeared to increase not only in Hangang but also over the country, indicating that the growth of Hangang population may not be related to the population fluctuation of other sites in Korea. Similarly, the number of wintering mergansers and shovelers tended to increase across the country. In Hangang, however, the population size of mergansers has sharply decreased since 2009 while shoveler population tended to be stable, implying that possible physical changes of Hangang such as change in water depth may not directly affect the population size fluctuation of three species in this area. Rather, it is likely that the decreasing number of mergansers in Hangang may directly or indirectly be associated with the growth of cormorant population, although habitat use of cormorants and mergansers is not severely overlapped in temporal scale during wintering season. Further studies clarifying these species interaction, determining the impact of cormorant population on urban ecosystem and monitoring change of wintering bird community structure will be worthwhile.

Purpose: Globally, Paradigm and corresponding awareness of mental health and mental illness is changing. At this point, social policy and cultural consciousness must also be changed. Medical fa-cilities to contain the recognition of the people of that period and the social, cultural background. Social situation changes, science has developed and facility changes. So, awareness of people for the facility also changes. Thus, this study consider the meaning and features of the facility with change of psychiatry and the concept of disease in each period. Finally the purpose of this study is to analyze the development of Mental Healthcare Facilities before 19th Century. Methods: In this study, focusing on the literature study, it investigated the developmental process of mental health-care facilities. Results: As the result of this study can be summarized as followings. In ancient times, facility for the harmony of body and mental appeared by means of supernaturalism and rationalism. In the middle ages, facility for restraint and control appeared by means of religious absolutism and mysticism. In the early modern period, facility for therapy appeared by means of humanism and enlightenment. Implications: Unlike other healthcare facilities, Mental healthcare facilities have a unique history. Based on the point of view of each period, it appears from and characteristics of mental healthcare facilities are different.
토마토페이스트소스첨가 멸치( Engraulis japonica ) 육젓필레통조림의 제조 및 특성

This study was investigated for the purpose of obtaining basic data for application to the canning process of salt-fermented anchovy Engraulis japonica fillet using tomato paste. The salt fermented anchovy fillet was prepared by fermenting anchovy fillet with salt 15% at 5 for 15 days and then cold air drying the salt-fermented anchovy fillet for 1 h at 16±1. The dried salt-fermented anchovy fillet 85 g was filled with 60 g of tomato paste sauce (tomato paste 42%, gum guar 1.0%, salt 2.0%, starch syrup 2.0%, cooking wine 1%, water 52%) and seamed by vacuum seamer in 301-3 can, then sterilized at Fo 9 and 11 min in a steam system retort at 121, respectively. The factors such as chemical composition, pH, total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), amino-N, color value (L, a, b), texture profile, thiobarbituric acid (TBA) value, sensory evaluation and viable bacterial count of the canned salt-fermented anchovy fillet were measured. Texture value of the product sterilized at Fo 11 min was higher than at Fo 9 min condition. In both sterilized cans, the viable bacterial counts were not detected. There was no remarkable difference in physicochemical between sterilization conditions. As a result of sensory evaluation, most sensory evaluation inspector judged that it was difficult to distinguish the sensory difference of both products sterilized at Fo 9 min and at 11 min. The results showed that sterilization of Fo 9 min was more desirable than that of Fo 11 min to prepare canned salt-fermented anchovy fillet using tomato paste sauce, because this condition is more economical.
