<P>The role of the robot in thyroid surgery remains uncertain, and it is unclear whether robotic total thyroidectomy (R-TT) can be justified as a standard treatment for patients with thyroid cancer. This study compared the long-term operative results and oncologic outcomes of R-TT and conventional open TT (O-TT) after propensity score matching of the cohorts. This study retrospectively evaluated patients with papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) who underwent TT with central compartment node dissection (CCND) by a single surgeon in tertiary medical center. Of the 833 patients, 94 (11.3 %) were lost to follow-up. 245 (33.2 %) underwent R-TT, and 494 (66.8 %) underwent O-TT. The mean follow-up duration was 74 (range 61-91) months. Propensity score matching in age, gender, tumor size, extrathyroidal invasion, multiplicity, bilaterality, and TNM stage identified 206 pairs of patients. The long-term oncologic outcomes were assessed in the R-TT and O-TT groups before and after adjustment for baseline covariates. After adjustment for baseline covariates, serum thyroglobulin (Tg) (p = 0.746) and anti-thyroglobulin antibody (TgAb) (p = 0.394) concentrations were similar in the two groups 5 years after surgery. Nine patients experienced locoregional recurrence, six in the O-TT and three in the R-TT group, with all recurrences in regional LNs. Disease-free survival (DFS) was similar in the R-TT and O-TT groups before matching (p = 0.890) and after adjustment for baseline covariates (p = 0.882). This represents the first report of 5-year surgical outcomes in patients who underwent R-TT for thyroid cancer. Long-term oncologic quality was similar after R-TT and O-TT.</P>
Local Structural Changes Caused in Ni-Mn-Ga Alloy Films by Thermal Effects

The local structural changes of Ni-Mn-Ga alloy films were investigated, according to the deposition temperature, by using the Ni, the Mn, and the Ga K-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) and glancing-angle X-ray diraction. The structural characters of the film deposited at 720 K are similar to those of bulk Ni2MnGa with a cubic L21 phase, and the film deposited onto a cooled substrate (s150 K) is in a disordered structure. After annealing, the structural changes in the films deposited at 150 K are as follows: the films annealed at temperatures below 440 K are in a disordered phase, the structural ordering starts in the films annealed at 520 K, at 600 K, the films become ordered, and at 680 K, the cubic L21 and the tetragonal phases coexist. By XAFS, the Ni, the Mn and the Ga atoms are found to be arranged as an ordered cubic L21 phase in the ordered film and as Ni-Mn-Ga alloy clusters in the disordered film.
Relationship between Stress Gene Polymorphisms and Litter Size by AI in Pigs

This study was performed to investigate the relationship between PSS-HSP70 gene polymorphism and artificial insemination (AI) reproductivity in the pigs. The RFLP polymorphism of PSS and the SSCP polymorphisms of HSP70 K1, K3 and K4 PCR product were detected different patterns. In the experiment for AI of fresh semen, spring and fall season showed higher litter size born of 10.89 head than 10.47 head of summer season. Landrace was showed higher litter size of 9.96 head than that of Duroc and Yorkshire (p<0.05). Stress relating PSS and HSP70 polymorphism of PSS-Normal, HSP70 K1-BB, K3-AB, K4-AA showd a highest litter size born of 10.97 head and litter size born alive of 10.69 head than that of the other polymorphisms(p<0.05). In the experiment for AI of frozen semen, effects of season and pig breeds were not showed for litter size born. The stress relating polymorphism of PSS-Carrier, HSP70 K1-BB, K3-BB, K4-AB showed highest litter size born of 11.29 head and litter size born alive of 10.82 head and PSS-Normal, HSP70 K1-BB, K3-AB, K4-AA showed the lowest litter size born of 8.48 head and litter size born alive of 7.33 head than that of the other polymorphisms(p<0.05). These results suggest that AI litter size born for the stress of forzen thawed semen may be affected by PSS and HSP70 polymorphism in pigs.
Novel signaling axis for ROS generation during K-Ras-induced cellular transformation

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are well known to be involved in oncogene-mediated cellular transformation. However, the regulatory mechanisms underlying ROS generation in oncogene-transformed cells are unclear. In the present study, we found that oncogenic K-Ras induces ROS generation through activation of NADPH oxidase 1 (NOX1), which is a critical regulator for the K-Ras-induced cellular transformation. NOX1 was activated by K-Ras-dependent translocation of p47<SUP>phox</SUP>, a subunit of NOX1 to plasma membrane. Of note, PKCδ, when it was activated by PDPK1, directly bound to the SH3-N domain of p47<SUP>phox</SUP> and catalyzed the phosphorylation on Ser348 and Ser473 residues of p47<SUP>phox</SUP> C-terminal in a K-Ras-dependent manner, finally leading to its membrane translocation. Notably, oncogenic K-Ras activated all MAPKs (JNK, ERK and p38); however, only p38 was involved in p47<SUP>phox</SUP>-NOX1-dependent ROS generation and consequent transformation. Importantly, K-Ras-induced activation of p38 led to an activation of PDPK1, which then signals through PKCδ, p47<SUP>phox</SUP> and NOX1. In agreement with the mechanism, inhibition of p38, PDPK1, PKCδ, p47<SUP>phox</SUP> or NOX1 effectively blocked K-Ras-induced ROS generation, anchorage-independent colony formation and tumor formation. Taken together, our findings demonstrated that oncogenic K-Ras activates the signaling cascade p38/PDPK1/PKCδ/p47<SUP>phox</SUP>/NOX1 for ROS generation and consequent malignant cellular transformation.

Long-term CO<sub>2</sub> capture tests of Pd-based composite membranes with module configuration

In this study, we investigate the configuration of a Pd-Au composite membrane on a porous nickel support and membrane modules for withstanding the capture of CO<SUB>2</SUB> from a coal gasifier for a long time. The hydrogen permeation flux, recovery and CO<SUB>2</SUB> capture were experimentally evaluated using two different modules and two conditions. As in our study, the CO<SUB>2</SUB> capturing and durability tests were performed with a 40% CO<SUB>2</SUB>/60% H<SUB>2</SUB> feed gas mixture in stainless steel (SS) 316L and 310S membrane modules. As a result, it is achieved the durability tests for more than 1150, 1100 (SS 316L module) and 3150 h (SS 310S module) with pressure cycles from 100 to 2000 kPa at 673 K. The durability of the membranes and membrane modules was demonstrated under pressure cycles from 100 to 2000 kPa at 673 K and the SS 310S module was very stable after 3150 h. The durability test for more than 3000 h demonstrated that there was no significant intermetallic diffusion between the PNS and Pd-Au layer. The CO<SUB>2</SUB> capturing test performed using a 40% CO<SUB>2</SUB>/60% H<SUB>2</SUB> mixture confirmed that the CO<SUB>2</SUB> capturing capacity of the membrane and membrane module was 2.0 L/min for a CO<SUB>2</SUB> concentration in the retentate stream of 92.3% and that the hydrogen recovery ratio increased with increasing pressure and reached 93.4%. Furthermore, we suggest that the SS 310S module configuration, CO<SUB>2</SUB> capturing test using Pd-Au/ZrO<SUB>2</SUB>/PNS membrane and membrane module is very suitable for application as an Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) system due to very simple numbering-up stackable module design was successful.
