Primary aldosteronism is a syndrome characterized by hypertension, hypokalemia, suppressed plasma renin activity, and elevated serum aldosterone levels. Conn first described it 1955 in association with adrenal cortical adenoma(Conn's syndrome). Today, it can be divided into at least six distinctive sub-groups. The diagnosis of primary aldosteronism is usually suspected when the patient presents with poorly controlled hypertension with hypokalemia. The main issues in the evaluation of primary aldosteronism are to differentiate an adenoma from hyperplasia and to localize the adenoma. Basic hormonal studies and computed tomographic(CT) scanning can be used effectively for that differentiation. An adenoma is one of a few potentially curable forms of hypertension, and it is best treated by removing the adrenal tumor. We experienced a case of a typical adrenal adenoma. The patient was a 37-year-old male who had experienced in both his legs over a period of several days a weakness due to hypokalemia. He was diagnosed using basic hormonal studies and adrenal CT scanning. After, he received laparoscopic adrenalectomy and was discharged with improved condition.

Mastoparan B (MPB), an antimicrobial cationic peptide isolated from the venom of the hornet Vespa basalis, is a basic amphipathic a-helical peptide composed of fourteen amino acid residues. In this study, we have investigated the algicidal effect of MPB against hatmful algae blooms (HABs) casative Alexandrium tamarense, Chattonella marina, Cochlodinium polykrikoides and Gymnodinium catenatum. The algicidal effect of MPB showed in the concentration of 31.3 ㎍/㎖ to 500 ㎍/㎖ against 4 HAB species and observed cell lysis or cell ecdysis by microscopy. MPB reacted more sensitive to C. marina and C.polykrikoides than A. tamarense and G. catenatum. The algicidal study of MPB against HABs will provides much insight into development of new algicidal substances.

Objectives : This study was carried out to suggest preventive methods for hypertension in cold-exposed workers. Methods : In 11 refs·iteration industries, 68 workers working in refrigerated areas more than one time per day were selected as the exposed group, and 68 workers not exposed to cold were selected as the control group. We interviewed the subjects with a questionnaire covering occupational history, and conducted clinical and laboratory tests including measurements of blood pressure and core temperature. Results : The systolic blood pressure in the exposed group(130.0±13.3 mmHg) was significantly higher than that recorded In the control group(118.3±12.1 mmHg), as was the diastolic blood pressure in the exposed group(82.7±8.5 mmHg) versus the control group(77.4±8.7 mmHg). The core temperature in the exposed group(36.1±0.7℃) was significantly lower than that experienced in the control group (36.4±0.5℃). In logistic regression analysis, age, cold exposure severity and milk intake were significant variables, with odds ratios of 5.204(95 % CI 1.440∼18.812), 2.674(95 % CI 1.080∼6.618), and 0.364(95 % Cl 0.141∼0.942) , respectively. Conclusions : Our study suggests that cold-exposed workers have higher a higher risk of hypertension, and that their core temperature is lower. Risk factors affecting hyper-tension of cold-exposed workers include age, cold exposure severity and milk intake. For the prevention of hypertension, cold-exposed workers should minimize cold-exposure time as much as possible.

For the destruction of toxic chlorinated organic compounds, this study proposes improved supercritical water oxidation method (multistep oxidation) using sodium nitrate as an oxidizer. This method solves the problems involved in the existing supercritical water oxidation method. Multistep oxidation means that NaNO₃ is oxidized to N₂ via NaNO₂ and NO. Toxic and hard to destroy organic substances like para-dichlorobenzen(4-DCBz), polychlorinate biphenyl(PCB) ware oxidized to non toxic substances in a condition, in which rapid pressure and temperature rise is restrained as much as possible. 4-dichlorobenzene(4-DCBz) and Polychlorinate biphenyl(PCB) in condition(450℃, p_(w)=0.25g/cm³, 30min) Was discomposed perfectly.

Individual identification is an important part in medicolegal field especially in mass disaster. At July, 27, 1989, KAL KE-803 was crashed on landing at Tripoli International Airport, Liba. The plane was caught in fire and sixty eight Koreans were sacrified. The majority of victims were severely charred and injured. The authors examed all dead bodies and successfully identified all the cases through visual, anthropological, odontological, radiological and pathological methods including fingerprint and blood typing.

Background: Churg-Strauss syndrome (CSS) is a systemic small-vessel vasculitis which predominantly involves the lung, skin, gastrointestinal tract and the nervous system, but here we report a CSS case involving the mediastinal lymph node (LN) and gallbladder (GB). Case report: A 43-year-old woman with 2-year history of asthma was admitted with dyspnea and wheezing. The patient showed marked peripheral eosinophilia and multiple mediastinal lymphadenopathy with multifocal pneumonic consolidations on both lower lungs in chest computed tomography (CT). The patient was treated with methylprednisolone and antibiotics assuming asthma exacerbation with pneumonia. Following 7 days of treatment, dyspnea improved with near disappearance of pulmonary in. ltration. However, during steroid tapering, acute cholecystitis with multiple GB stones developed. Follow-up chest CT showed much improved consolidations, but no significant change of enlarged mediastinal LN. In addition, serum P-anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody was positive. Because she had persistent abdominal pain requiring cholecystectomy, co-operation of cholecystectomy and concurrent wedge resection with mediastinal LN biopsy was performed for tissue confirmation. Necrotizing and granulomatous vasculitis with eosinophil in filtrates was observed in the specimens of GB, lung, and LN, respectively. Furthermore, skin biopsy was performed from purpuric lesions on both dorsum and it showed leukocytoclastic vasculitis with eosinophil predominance. finally, she was con. rmed as CSS based on asthma, eosinophilia, polyneuropathy, pulmonary in filtrates and extravascular eosinophils by biopsy confirmation on multiple sites. After 4 weeks of treatment with methylprednisolone 60mg/day, her associated symptoms and eosinophilia were improved. Conclusion: We herein report an unusual case of CSS manifested by mediastinal lymphadenopathy with lung consolidation and necrotizing eosinophilic cholecystitis, which can be misdiagnosed as pneumonia with reactive LN enlargement and stone induced cholecystitis. Thus, involvement of CSS in other organ should not be overlooked.

Yoon, Jung-Gyu,Lee, Sang-Bin,Seo, Hwa-Mi,Baek, Eun-Kyung,Seol, Ha-Na,Yoo, Kyung-Tae International Academy of Physical Therapy Research 2010 Journal of International Academy of Physical Ther Vol.1 No.2
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to estimate the effects of subliminal music with balance imagery training on balance and concentration. Methods: The participants were 45 seniors in an undergraduate school in Korea. The subliminal music with balance imagery training intervention was carried out for 20 minutes. Other interventions were also carried out for 20 minutes. 12 seniors(Group A) listened to subliminal music with balance imagery training, 12 seniors(Group B) listened to subliminal music, 11 seniors(Group C) received balance imagery training, and 10 seniors(Group D) had no intervention(Control group). The grid test is related to measured levels of concentration intensity. Romberg one legged standing test was carried out for 30 seconds. The collected data was analyzed by one-paired t test and one way ANOVA using the SPSS Windows 12 ver. program. Results: The major findings of this study were as follows: Concentration levels of Group A and C improved, and balance levels of Group C and D improved. There was a statistically significant decrease in concentration between Group A and B, Group A and C after intervention. Conclusion: These findings suggest that listening to subliminal music with balance imagery training may be useful in managing concentration in seniors. So it provides basic information for further concentration on improving education on music with balance imagery training.
