Gain and efficiency of table-top terahertz free-electron lasers driven by a microtron accelerator

There are difficulties in developing high-power and small-size terahertz (THz) sources that can be used for field applications. In an attempt to design small-size THz free-electron laser (FEL) devices capable of producing higher output powers in the THz spectral region of 1–2 THz, we have developed a microtron accelerator that can accelerate electron beams to 3–6 meV, with a macropulse current of more than 40 mA. The new THz FELs use hybrid electromagnetic (EM) undulators that are two to four times shorter in length than the previous undulator and waveguide resonators with mode cross-sectional areas that are more than two times smaller than the parallel-plate waveguide in the existing FEL. We confirm that the gains and losses of the compact FELs are sufficient for lasing, and we estimate that average output power of approximately 1 W is possible with an efficiency approximately 10 times greater than the existing FEL. The minimum size of the THz FEL system, including a high-voltage pulse modulator, is estimated to be approximately 1.5 m × 2.0 m.
인산농도와 레이저 강도에 따른 다결정실리콘 태양전지의 레이저 도핑연구

다결정실리콘태양전지의 효율을 증가시키기 위하여 레이저를 이용한 선택적 도핑방법을 시도하였다. 펄스 레이저를 이용하여 레이저 도핑을 하기 위한 특정 패턴을 만들었다. 패턴이 형성된 부분에 인산(H3PO4)을 도포하고 연속발진 레이저를 입사하여 표면을 열처리하여 인을 도핑하였다. 패턴이 형성된 부분의 표면형상은 전자주사현미경(SEM)으로 관찰하였고, 레이저의 세기에 따른 인산이 도핑된 깊이는 면저항 측정기(4 point probe)와 2차이온 질량분석기(SIMS)를 이용하여 분석하였다.

Background/Aims: Immunomodulators such as azathioprine (AZA) and 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP) have been used for induction and maintenance treatment of Crohn`s disease (CD) and have effect on decrease of the steroid dose in active CD. The aims of study is to evaluate the predictive factors of response to AZA/6-MP in patients with moderate to severe CD. Methods: Among total 1,499 patients registered on Crohn`s cohort in Korea, 1,382 were enrolled in this study. The medical records including baseline characteristics, location and type of CD, complications, treatment agents, and surgical treatments were reviewed retrospectively. The patients with AZA/6-MP treatments were divided into two groups according to the additional treatments such as biologic agents and/or surgical treatment. Univariate and multivariate analyses were conducted to evaluate the predictive factors of clinical response to immunomodulators. Results: Among 1,382 patients with CD, AZA/6-MP treatment was used in 926 (67.0%). Between two groups according to AZA/6-MP treatment, the treatment group was younger than the other group (mean age, 25.8 vs 32.4, p<.001). AZA/6-MP treatment was used more frequently in patients with ileocolonic CD (62.5% vs 45.4%, p=.007) and with perianal disease (29.5% vs 21.0%, p<.001). In 926 patients with AZA/6-MP treatment, 376 (40.6%) were treated with biologic agents and/or surgical treatment. Between two groups according to the result of AZA/6-MP treatment, the disease locations were significantly different (p=.007), although the disease behaviors were not different. Multivariate analysis revealed that the disease location (p=.003) and age at diagnosis (p=.029) were significantly associated with AZA/6-MP treatment failure. Conclusions: AZA/6-MP treatment is effective on induction and maintenance treatment in CD. However, early biologic treatment should be considered in young age, colonic CD, since their AZA/6-MP treatment is less effective.
혐기성소화조의 교반방식이 음폐수 처리효율에 미치는 영향

Anaerobic digestion is a method for the proper management of the continuously increasing amount of food waste leachate, although it is costly and time consuming and requires enormous sites. Therefore, improving digestion efficiency with proper operation can be a realistic alternative. In this study, the effects of agitation methods on the performance of anaerobic digesters treating food waste leachate were evaluated by comparing two agitation methods: gas agitation and mechanical agitation. After changing gas agitation to mechanical agitation, the daily amount of food waste leachate treated increased from 131 to 147 t. In addition, the organic removal efficiency was improved by up to 6%. Digestion gas production also increased from 0.33 to 0.50 Nm3/kg CODcr-added. Moreover, it was found that it was possible to reduce electricity consumption by 40%. The above results indicate that the mechanical agitation method is more advantageous for the treatment of food waste leachate than the gas agitation method.
