Recently, several new methods for the detection of genetic damages in vitro and in vivo based on molecular biological techniques were introduced according to the rapid progress in toxicology combined with cellular and molecular biology. Among these methods, mouse lymphoma thymidine kanase (tk) gene forward mutation assay, single cell gel electrophoresis (comet assay) and transgenic animal and cell line model as a target gene of lac I (Big Blue) and lac Z (Muta Mouse) gene mutation are newly introduced based on molecular toxicological approaches. The mouse lymphoma tk^(+/-) gene assay (MOLY) using L5178Y tk+i- mouse lymphoma cell line is one of the mammalian forward mutation assays, and has many advantages and more sensitive than hprt assay. The target gene of MOLY is a heterozygous tk^(+/-) gene located in 11 chromosome, so it is able to detect the wide range of genetic changes like point mutation, deletion, rearrangement, and mitotic recombination within tk gene or deletion of entire chromosome 11. The comet assay is a rapid, simple, visual and sensitive technique for measuring and analysing DNA breakages in mammalian cells. Also, transgenic animal and cell line models, which have exogenous DNA incorporated into their genome, carry recoverable shuttle vector containing reporter genes to assess endogenous effects or alteration in specific genes related to disease process, are powerful tools to study the mechanism of mutation in vivo and in vitro, respectively. Also in vivo acridine orange supravital staining micronucleus assay by using mouse peripheral reticulocytes was introduced as an alternative of bone marrow micronucleus assay. In this respect, there was an International workshop on genotoxicity procedure (IWGTP) supported by OECD and EMS (Environmental Mutagen Society) at Washington D, C, in March 25-26, 1999. The objective of IWGTP is to harmonize the testing procedures internationally, and to extend to finalization of OECD guideline, and to the agreement of new guidelines under the International Conference of Harmonization (ICH) for these methods mentioned above. Therefore, we introduce and review the principle, detailed procedure, and application of MOLY, comet assay, transgenic mutagenesis assay and supravital staining micronucleus assay.

This study was carried out to survey origins of native plants and introduced flowers. Naming of native plants was divided into two types : one type is based on the internal properties of plants(shape, color, length, thickness, size) and the other type on such properties as person, animal, object, place and time which are compared to shapes and properties of plants. Names of native plants originate from shape > color > length > thickness > size > width > number, and also from characteristics > state > inhaitation place and place of origin > flowering and fruiting season > function and use. Prefixes were added in order to describe shapes and properties of plants in detail. About 50% of the names of the introduced flowers, originates from their shapes, about 15% from persons' names and about 13% from mythologies and legends. This shows that countries have different ways naming flowers from other countries and that survey of origins of flower names helps understand the characteristics of the flowers.

Objective : This study on Sipimikwanjung-tang was undertaken to evaluate its antioxidant capacities and antiperoxidation activities in rat liver tissues. Sipimikwanjung-tang which has been one of the prescriptions in sasang constitutional medicine is usually applied for the therapy of various liver diseases. It is elucidated that Sipimikwanjung-tang has antioxidants on liver tissue of rat and the cytotoxic effects on human hepatoblastoma Hep G2 cells. Methods: Sipimikwanjung-tang extract in antioxidant effects of Hep G2 cells is evaluated by MTT assay, DAPI staining, DNA fragmentation assays and FACS can analysis. Results: Sipimikwanjung-tang induced apoptosis in Hep G2 cells, and induced G1 and G2M arrest of the cell cycle as well as a significant increase in PARP and caspase-3 activity. It induced an increase in $H_2O_2$ generation and the subsequent $NF-{\kappa}B$ activation and also induced cell apoptosis through the caspase-3-dependent pathways in the low concentration of Sipimikwanjung-tang extracts. However, the high dose of Sipimikwanjung-tang extract in Hep G2 cells inhibited $TGF-{\beta}l-induced$ apoptosis via increase in cellular $H_2O_2$, formation and $NF-{\kappa}B$ activation in human hepatoblastoma Hep G2 cells. Conclusion: From this study, the possibility that Sipimikwanjung-tang extracts apply to antioxidant and apoptotic treatment of disease is revealed.

We evaluated the effects of dietary fiber extracted from brown rice on the quality of reduced-fat emulsion sausage. Reduced-fat emulsion sausage was supplemented with brown rice fiber at levels of 0, 1, 2, 3, and 6%. Adding different levels of brown rice fiber affected the proximate composition of the reduced-fat emulsion sausages (p

The distance fmm skin to the lumber epidural space was measured in 60 male patients receiving epidural analgesia. The mean distance was found to be 4.45cm. The epidural depths were identified most frequently at 4.0 to 4.5cm deep and over 90% of total cases were less than 5.5cm deep. The epidural depths had correlations with weight and PI(P $lt; 0.001), but not correlated with height.

Direct seeding cultivation on submerged paddy in rice is one of the important cultivation methods, because its cost is lower than that of transplanting cultivation. In case of direct seeding cultivation on submerged paddy in rice, these experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of different seeding dates of the growth response in Hwacheongbyeo (Japonica type) and Samgangbyeo (Japonica-Indica type). The growth durations of Hwacheongbyeo and Samgangbyeo at the early seeding (May 1) were 135 and 138 days, respectively, but those at late seeding (June 21) were 199 and 121 days, respectively. The maximum tillering stage came earlier, and number of effective tillers were decreased with later seeding. However, the percentage of productive tillers was higher with earlier seeding. The days from direct seeding to heading time were 100 days ar early seeding plot and 75 days at late seeding. The critical seeding dates were June 11 for Hwacheongbyeo in consideration of critical stable heading time. The culm lengths of Hwacheongbyeo and Samgangbyeo at early seeding plot were 90 and 83㎝, respectively, but those at later seeding plot were 76 and 64㎝, respectively.

<P>Optical confinement effects are investigated in InGaN/GaN axial-heterostructure nanolasers. Cylindrical nanorods with GaN/InGaN/GaN structures are prepared using combined processes of top-down and bottom-up approaches. The lasing of InGaN is observed at a low threshold (1 μJ cm−2), which is attributed to an efficient carrier transfer process from GaN to InGaN. The lasing of GaN is also found in the threshold range of 10-20 μJ cm−2 with a superlinear increase in emission intensity and high quality factors (<I>Q</I> = 1000), implying that dual wavelengths of lasing are tunable as a function of excitation intensity. The non-classical Fabry-Pérot modes suggest strong light-matter interactions in nanorods by optical confinement effects. The polarization of lasing indicates that the non-classical modes are in the identical transverse mode, which supports the formation of exciton-polaritons in nanorods. Polariton lasing in a single axial-heterostructure nanorod is observed for the first time, which proposes small-sized light sources with low threshold, polarized light, and tunable wavelengths in a single nanorod.</P>
