The purpose of this study is to analyze research papers on history education published from 1963 till 1998, and to examine the results and problems to solve, and to put forward the works to be undertaken for the improvement of history education. 1. The results analyzed according to the kinds of history education journals are characterized as follows: (a) The number of Master of Education theses on history education is 311. 47.6 percent(148) of them were published during the 6th Curriculum, and 32.2 percent(100) of them during the 5th Curriculum. The number increased greatly after the year 1982. 47.3 percent(147) of them analyzed history textbooks. (b) The number of history education research papers published in university research journals or academic society journals is 377. 25.2 percent(95) of them were published during the 5th Curriculum, and 23.3 percent(88) of them during the 4th Curriculum. 31.3 percent(118) of them analyzed history textbooks. (c) The number of teachers" education research papers that were chosen at the national education research competitions is 153. 38.6 percent(59) of them were published during the 3rd Curriculum, and 26.8 percent(41) of them during the 4th Curriculum. 17.7 percent(27) of them were written on the establishment of national identity and another 17.7 percent(27) of them on the development of historical insight. (d) 63 research papers were chosen at the national education materials exhibitions. 41.3 percent(26) of them were published during the 3rd Curriculum. 30.2 percent(19) of them were written on the establishment of national identity. (e) 72.2 percent(78) of 108 theses written by the designated history education research schools were published during the 3rd Curriculum. 46.3 percent(50) of them were on the establishment of national identity. (f) 10S history education symposiums were held. 23.8 percent(25) of them were on the problems, tasks, and directions of history education. 2. The tasks for the improvement of history education are summarized as follows: (a) The history subject now included in the social studies subject must become a separate, independent subject. The system of government designated history textbooks must be replaced with that of government approved ones. (b) History education research schools must be designated and activated. (c) Historians, history education scholars, and history teachers must cooperate and publish "A Book of History Education Materials" using their research papers so that school teachers may make use of the materials. (d) History education scholars and history teachers must do researches together on historical views, historical figures, historical terminology, and field studies on an annual basis. (e) Local history education research societies must be established to discuss and solve problems of history education. (f) History education must be established as a new independent branch of science. History education is certain to develop when history education scholars and history teachers work together and make an effort to solve problems. This is our task.
