      • Anti-inflammatory effects of Stephania tetrandra S. Moore on interleukin-6 production and experimental inflammatory disease models

        DEREGULATION of interleukin-6 (IL-6) expression caused the synthesis and release of many inflammatory mediators. It is involved in chronic inflammation, autoimmune diseases, and malignancy. Stephania tetrandra S. Moore is a Chinese medicinal herb which has been used traditionally as a remedy for neuralgia and arthritis in China. To investigate the anti-inflammatory effects of S. tetrandra S. Moore in vitro and in vivo, its effects on the production of Il-6 and inflammatory mediators were analysed. When human monocytes/macrophages stimulated with silica were treated with 0.1-10 ㎍/㎖ S. tetranda S. Moore, the production of IL-6 was inhibited up to 50%. At these concentrations, it had no cytotoxicity effect on these cells. It also suppressed the production of Il-6 by alveolar macrophages stimulated with silica. In addition, it inhibited the release of superoxide anion and hydrogen peroxide from human monocytes/macrophages. To assess the anti-fibrosis efects of S. tetrandra S. Moore, its effects on in vivo experimental inflammatory models were evaluated. In the experimental silicosis model, IL-6 activities in the sera and in the culture supernatants of pulmonary fibroblasts were also inhibited by it. In vitro and in vivo treatment of S. tetrandra S. Moore reduced collagen production by rat lung fibroblasts and lung tissue. Also, S. tetrandra S. Moore reduced the levels of serum GOT and GPT in the rat cirrhosis model induced by CCl_4, and it was effective in reducing hepatic fibrosis and nodular formation. Taken together, these data indicate that it has a potent antiinflammatory and anti-fibrosis effect by reducing IL-6 production.

        A computer code of finite element method is developed by using the ?? programming language. The concept of class, inheritance, and polymorphism in ?? improves the modularity and the flexibility(such as potability, implantability, and expandability) of engineering software. The graphic user interface (GUI) is designed by using the MFC(Microsoft Foundation Class) based on ??, and combined successfully with the main code of FEM solver. This study shows the superior of OOP(Object-Oriented programming) such as ?? to other progamming languages when applied to complicated engineering problems.

        In this paper, the contact pressure of the wafer and polishing pad were investigated through numerical analysis using FEM tool, ANSYS 9.0. The distribution of the contact pressure is one of main parameters affect on the flatness and surface roughness of polished wafers. Two types of air polishing head, a hard type head with ceramic disk and soft type head with air bag compression were considered. The effects of the table deformation and initial shape on the contact pressure and deformation were also examined. Both heads and tables were modeled as solid model and finite element model, and the material properties of polishing pads and rubber plate for the air-bag head were used based on the tensile tests. The distribution errors of the air-bag head were smaller than hard type head even when the table was convex or concave shape, so it could be concluded that the air-bag head is advantageous for the uniformity of the contact pressure.

      • Accelerated Test Design for Crankshaft Reliability Estimation

        Crankshaft, the core element of the engine of a vehicle, transforms the translational motion generated by combustion to rotational motion. Its failure will cause serious damage to the engine so its reliability verification must be performed. In this study, the S-N data of the bending and torsion fatigue limits of a crankshaft are derived. To evaluate the reliability of the crankshaft, reliability verification and analysis are performed. For the purpose of further evaluation, the bending and torsion tests of the original crankshaft are carried out, and failure mode analysis is made. The appropriate number of samples, the applied load, and the test time are computed. On the basis of the test results, Weibull analysis for the shape and scale parameters of the crankshaft is estimated. Likewise, the B10 life under 50% of the confidence level and the MTTF are exactly calculated, and the groundwork for improving the reliability of the crankshaft is laid.

      • VHCF PROPERTIES OF AISI 1045, 4137, 52100 & H13 STEEL BY UNSM TREATMENT

        There are many surface modification technologies aimed at improving fatigue strength by inducing big and deep compressive residual stress. The Ultrasonic Nanocrystal Surface Modification (UNSM) technology is one of them. The UNSM technology has been applied to carbon steel AISI1045, chrome molybdenum steel AISI4137, hot tool steel H13 (SKD61) and bearing steel AISI52100 (SUJ2). The mechanical properties of these steels before and after UNSM treatment are analyzed and compared, rotary bending fatigue test until 10? cycles (VHCF) is carried out in order to verify the UNSM effects. SEM, ESBD and TEM analysis are performed to investigate the effects of UNSM treatment. The contribution of mechanical properties to fatigue strength improvement is discussed.

      • 기원전 5세기의 보령군 평라리 출토의 유리구슬에 대하여

        A dark blue glass bead covered with a thick white weathered layer was unearthed from a grave at Pyoungra-ri, Boryoung-gun, Choongcheong Province in 1995. The grave was dated to be at least around the 5th century BC as determined by other archaeological artifacts accompanied. This dating indicates that they bead is the earliest glass item excavated so far in the Korean Peninsula and as old as the earliest Chinese glass artifacts. The glass bead is 17.4 mm in diameter and 15.:3 mm high with a bore of 2mm. Chemical composition at the dark blue broken surface was analyzed by Rutherford Back Scattering(RBS) method using 2MV Tandem-type accelerator, and found to be 77.7% Si0₂. 11.5% K₂O, 2.4 CaO, 3.6%, Al₂O₃ 0.4% MgO, 1.3%, MnO, 0.6% Fe₂O₃. 0.8% CuO, and 1.7 PbO. Small amount of lead oxide in the bead is unique: because lead oxide is hardly observed in such a potash glass from other countries of this period. Furtherniore, the lead isotope ratio indicates that the raw materials are originated from the southern part of Korea. The remains, where prehistorical beads made of jades or glasses are being excavated, were concentrated in the area that Pyoungra-ri is located and the native culture of this area was highly developed at the period of around 5th century BC. These facts is do not exclude the possibility that the local discovery of the Pyoungra-ri glass bead may be a local invention.

      • 급성 열성 피부 점막 임파절 증후군의 임상적 고찰

        Authors observed the clinical and epidemiological features on 36 cases of MCLS who were admitted to Pediatric department of Soon Chun Hyang University Hospital, Seoul, Korea during the period of 5 1/2 years from January 1979 to June 1984. The following results were obtained: 1) 77.8% of cases were below 2 years of age. 2) Male to female ratio was 2 : 1. 3) There was no seasonal variation. 4) The incidence of major symptomes were fever(97.2%), reddening and indurative edema of palms and soles(75%), Membranous desquamation(86.1%), polymorphous exanthem (86.1%), bilateral conjunctival injection(97.2%), reddness and fissuring of lip(88.9%), strawberry tongue(86.1%), diffuse reddening of oropharyngeal mucosa(86.1%) and nonpurulent swelling of cervical lymph node(77.8%). 5) In laboratory findings, anemia, leukocytosis, increased ESR, positive CRP, thrombocytosis, proteinuria and pyuria were found. 6) EKG abnormalities were found in 47.2% of cases. 7) All cases were treated with aspirin and improved without death.
