Objectives: The authors sought to investigate whether the impact of treatment strategies on clinical outcomes differed between patients with left main (LM) bifurcation lesions and those with non-LM bifurcation lesions. Background: Few studies have considered anatomic location when comparing 1- and 2-stent strategies for bifurcation lesions. Methods: We compared the prognostic impact of treatment strategies on clinical outcomes in 2,044 patients with non-LM bifurcation lesions and 853 with LM bifurcation lesions. The primary outcome was target lesion failure (TLF) defined as a composite of cardiac death, myocardial infarction (MI), and target lesion revascularization. Results: The 2-stent strategy was used more frequently in the LM bifurcation group than in the non-LM bifurcation group (40.3% vs. 20.8%, p < 0.01). During a median follow-up of 36 months, the 2-stent strategy was not associated with a higher incidence of cardiac death (hazard ratio [HR]: 1.24; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.72 to 2.14; p = 0.44), cardiac death or MI (HR: 1.12; 95% CI: 0.58 to 2.19; p = 0.73), or TLF (HR: 1.39; 95% CI: 0.99 to 1.94; p = 0.06) in the non-LM bifurcation group. In contrast, in patients with LM bifurcation lesions, the 2-stent strategy was associated with a higher incidence of cardiac death (HR: 2.43; 95% CI: 1.05 to 5.59; p = 0.04), cardiac death or MI (HR: 2.09; 95% CI: 1.08 to 4.04; p = 0.03), as well as TLF (HR: 2.38; 95% CI: 1.60 to 3.55; p < 0.01). Significant interactions were present between treatment strategies and bifurcation lesion locations for TLF (p = 0.01). Conclusions: The 1-stent strategy, if possible, should initially be considered the preferred approach for the treatment of coronary bifurcation lesions, especially LM bifurcation lesions. A CMOS readout circuit for uncooled infrared Focal Plane Array (FPA) deteftor is presented, which is a key component in InfraRed (IR) imaging systems. The designed readout circuit satisfies various design requirements and constraints such as impedance matching, low noise, large dynamic range, low power dissipation and small pitch size. For impedance matching between the detector and preamplifier, a new circuit based on MOS diode structure with variable substrate biasing is devised. Also, tunable low pass filter with single-pole is used to suppress high frequency noise. In addition, a clamp circuit is used to enhance the signal-pole is used to suppress high frequency noise. In addition, a clamp circuit is used to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio of the readout output signals. A prototype 64×64 ROIC is designed using 0.65-㎛ 2P3M (double poly, tripple metal) N-Well CMOS process. It contains 62,000 devices including transistors, capacitors and resistors on an area of about 6.3×6.7㎟.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Titanium doping is employed to enhance the structural strength of a high-Ni layered cathode material in lithium ion batteries during high temperature cycling. After Ti-doping, the external morphology remains similar, but the lattice parameters of the layered structure are slightly shifted toward larger values. With application of the prepared materials as cathodes in lithium-ion batteries, the initial capacities are similar but the cycling performance at 25°C is enhanced by Ti-doping. During high temperature cycling at 60°C, furthermore, highly improved capacity retention is achieved with the Ti-doped material (95% of initial capacity at 50th cycles), while cycle fading is accelerated with the bare electrode. This enhancement is attributed to better retention of the compressive strength of the particles and retarded crack formation within the particles. In addition, impedance increase is reduced in the Ti-doped electrode, which is attributed to an improvement in the structural strength of the high-Ni cathode material with Ti-doping.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Ti doping of high Ni-layered cathode materials in lithium ion batteries. </LI> <LI> Improvement of high temperature cycling after Ti doping. </LI> <LI> Less crack formation and lower impedance in Ti doped cathode material. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>
Negative Fermi-Level Pinning Effect of Metal/n-GaAs(001) Junction Induced by a Graphene Interlayer

<P>It is demonstrated that the electric dipole layer due to the overlapping of electron wave functions at the metal/graphene contact results in a negative Fermi-level pinning effect on the region of the GaAs surface with low interface-trap density in the metal/graphene/n-GaAs(001) junction. The graphene interlayer plays the role of a diffusion barrier, preventing the atomic intermixing at the interface and preserving the low interface-trap density region. The negative Fermi-level pinning effect is supported by the decrease of the Schottky barrier with the increase of the metal work function. Our work shows that the graphene interlayer can invert the effective work function of the metal between high and low, making it possible to form both Schottky and Ohmic-like contacts with identical (particularly high work function) metal electrodes on a semiconductor substrate possessing low surface-state density.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

TiC films, through A.R.E. (Activated Reactive Evaporation), were deposited on 304 stainless steel substrate. The structure and properties of TiC films were analyzed according to the substrate temperatures and the partial pressures of the reactive gas (C₂H₂). Coated surfaces and cross sections were examined by S.E.M., and the pole intensity were measured by x-ray diffraction. Hardness was measured by a Micro Vickers Hardness Tester with 10 gr load. Surface structure was of micro-dome structure at low temperature (=0.23 T_m) and the micro-dome structure changed to smooth dome-structure at 650℃ (=0.28 T_m). The intergrated pole intensities of (200) and (220) increased with temperature, but that of (111) were strong at all temperatures. Hardness decreased from 3000 to 1875 ㎏/㎟ and C/M ratio decreased from 0.701 to 0.667, with decreasing temperature and partial pressure.

A possible potentiation between cholecystokinin (CCK) and secretin in amylase secretion from isolated rat pancreatic acini was investigated. Combined treatment of acini with secretin and CCK at low concentrations, which are known to be physiological, resulted in enzyme secretion larger than the arithmetic sum of their separate effects. Such a potentiating effect also occurred between secretin and A23187 (Ca ionophore), between forskolin (adenylate cyclase activator) and CCK, and between forskolin and A23187. Staurosporin (protein kinase C inhibitor) and W7 (calmodulin antagonist) inhibited markedly the potentiated amylase release induced by the agonists, but KT5720 (protein kinase A inhibitor) did not affect the potentiated amylase release. Therefore, we concluded that the action of CCK in a physiological concentration is potentiated by secretin in a physiological concentration range and vice versa, and that the intracellular mechanism necessary for the potentiation is associated with $Ca^{2+}$. However, it is uncertain what mechanisms are involved in potentiation of amylase release after CAMP and $Ca^{2+}$.

<P>Metabolic engineering to increase the glucose uptake rate might be beneficial to improve microbial production of various fuels and chemicals. In this study, we enhanced the glucose uptake rate in <I>Saccharomyces cerevisiae</I> by overexpressing hexose transporters (HXTs). Among the 5 tested HXTs (Hxt1, Hxt2, Hxt3, Hxt4, and Hxt7), overexpression of high-affinity transporter Hxt7 was the most effective in increasing the glucose uptake rate, followed by moderate-affinity transporters Hxt2 and Hxt4. Deletion of <I>STD1</I> and <I>MTH1</I>, encoding corepressors of <I>HXT</I> genes, exerted differential effects on the glucose uptake rate, depending on the culture conditions. In addition, improved cell growth and glucose uptake rates could be achieved by overexpression of <I>GCR1</I>, which led to increased transcription levels of <I>HXT1</I> and ribosomal protein genes. All genetic modifications enhancing the glucose uptake rate also increased the ethanol production rate in wild-type <I>S. cerevisiae</I>. Furthermore, the growth-promoting effect of <I>GCR1</I> overexpression was successfully applied to lactic acid production in an engineered lactic acid-producing strain, resulting in a significant improvement of productivity and titers of lactic acid production under acidic fermentation conditions.</P>

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of erectile dysfunction (ED) in a rural area of Korea and to examine the relationship between the prevalence and correlates of subjects. Method : This study was done as a part of the chronic disease survey of rural area by the Asan Foundation. Among 30 years or older population from Jung Eup, a rural area of Korea, 711 male subjects were sampled using a cluster probability sampling method. Trained interviewers visited and interviewed subjects aged 30 years or older with a structured interview. ED was categorized as 'none', 'mild', 'moderate', or 'severe' according to the ability to 'attain and/or maintain an erection satisfactory for sexual intercourse'. Response rate was 54.3% (N=386). Results : The age weighted prevalence of ED was 27.2% (minimal 14.1%, moderate 7.6%, severe 5.5%). Prevalence and severity increased with age. Liver disease and underweight were significantly (p<0.05) associated with ED. Smoking seemed to be correlated with ED, but did not reach statistically significant level. Conclusion : ED was highly prevalent in the rural community of Korea. Medical, sociodemographic, and lifestyle variables associated with ED may alert physicians to patients at risk for ED and offer insight to its etiology.
