        Speaking of Religion

Pecora, Vincent P. 국제언어인문학회 2002 인문언어 Vol.4 No.-

Since the end of the Cold War, debate about the grand struggle between capitalism and communism has been largely replaced by debate about religious sectarianism. Some have even referred to a clash of civilizations in the wake of the spread of Islamic fundamentalism. This is in fact an old debate, but it has been given new life by arguments about globalization and economic development as envisioned by the West, and especially by the terrorist attacks in New York on September 11, 2001. While the political right has had little difficulty treating religious belief as a fundamental human and social interest, much of the political left has remained committed to secular Enlightenment, even when it criticizes the hegemony of the West. The dispute depends upon competing notions of history, secularism, and progress, and ultimately on the possibility or desirability of universal solidarity. While for many a world unified by one religion may no longer make sense, the old Enlightenment dream that a single version of secular and universal reason will eventually prevail over religious difference may also need to be reconsidered. The process that we call secularization is neither as singular, nor as transparent, as we might think.

        The Culture of Surveillance

        Pecora, Vincent P. 새한영어영문학회 2002 새한영어영문학 Vol.44 No.1

At least since Michel Foucaint's Surveiller et Punir Naissance de la prison, the way in which surveillance functions as a mechanism of social regulation and discipline has been central to the study of cultural representations1) Foucaint's resurrection of Bentham's panopticon was in large part also a re-elaboration of Max Weber's "iron cage" thesis about bureaucratic, capitalist society, this time for an increasingly media-saturated age2). To be sure, the power of surveillance was presented by Foucault as both coercive and productive where social relations were concerned-he famously claimed to refuse any normative approach to the topic-but it would be fair to say that it was surveillance as morally and even epistemologically regulative authority that became the dominant issue for the majority of Foucaint's readers, who applied it equally to the unseen enforcement of good social order in the 19th-century novel (see, for example, D A Miller's The Novel and the Police) and the unacknowledged workings of political and economic control in the modern metropolis (as in Mike Davis's City of Quartz)3). In these and countless other examples, surveillance emerged as an instrument by which authoritative social institutions shaped reality, either for the benefit of such institutions and the classes they served or for some more general tyrannous purpose Foucault's thesis resonated in profound ways with a Western intelligentsia that had been reminded constantly of the evils of surveillance in communist Eastern Europe, especially through novels like George Orwell's 1984, that watched both the Zapruder home movie of John Kennedy's assassination and the live broadcast of Lee Harvey Oswald's subsequent murder, that had been educated in the ways of the media by films like Medium Cool and Blow Up, and that had witnessed full-scale televised war in Vietnam from their living rooms.

Validation of a smart structural concept for wing-flap camber morphing

        Pecora, Rosario,Amoroso, Francesco,Amendola, Gianluca,Concilio, Antonio Techno-Press 2014 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.14 No.4

The study is aimed at investigating the feasibility of a high TRL solution for a wing flap segment characterized by morphable camber airfoil and properly tailored to be implemented on a real-scale regional transportation aircraft. On the base of specific aerodynamic requirements in terms of target airfoil shapes and related external loads, the structural layout of the device was preliminarily defined. Advanced FE analyses were then carried out in order to properly size the load-carrying structure and the embedded actuation system. A full scale limited span prototype was finally manufactured and tested to: ${\bullet}$ demonstrate the morphing capability of the conceived structural layout; ${\bullet}$ demonstrate the capability of the morphing structure to withstand static loads representative of the limit aerodynamic pressures expected in service; ${\bullet}$ characterize the dynamic behavior of the morphing structure through the identification of the most significant normal modes. Obtained results showed high correlation levels with respect to numerical expectations thus proving the compliance of the device with the design requirements as well as the goodness of modeling approaches implemented during the design phase.

가정위탁 보호종료 성인의 생활경험에 관한 질적 연구 : 미국 워싱턴 주를 중심으로

        권지성,peter,pecora,홍지연 한국아동가족복지학회 2019 한국가족복지학 Vol.24 No.2

The purpose of this study was to understand the lived experiences of adults aged out of foster care. To achieve this, we conducted in-depth interviews with 5 adults aged out of foster care. The data were analyzed and integrated using the context-pattern analysis method. The analyzed data were grouped according to three sub-contexts (foster care, family, and community). For the first sub-context of ‘foster care’, life meanings attached to events and people involved in foster care were discovered. The second sub-context, ‘family’ included meanings of relationship with their care-givers, foster or biological families. The third sub-context, ‘community’ was defined as interactions and life events within the community. Lastly, the common theme of life-crisis experiences, including family crisis, drifting, mental health issues, incarceration, and homelessness emerged across the three sub-contexts. Based on the results, policy and practical guidelines to better serve and enhance the well-being of adults aged out of foster care were suggested. An original device for train bogie energy harvesting: a real application scenario

Francesco Amoroso,Rosario Pecora,Monica Ciminello,Antonio Concilio 국제구조공학회 2015 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.16 No.3

Today, as railways increase their capacity and speeds, it is more important than ever to be completely aware of the state of vehicles fleet‟s condition to ensure the highest quality and safety standards, as well as being able to maintain the costs as low as possible. Operation of a modern, dynamic and efficient railway demands a real time, accurate and reliable evaluation of the infrastructure assets, including signal networks and diagnostic systems able to acquire functional parameters. In the conventional system, measurement data are reliably collected using coaxial wires for communication between sensors and the repository. As sensors grow in size, the cost of the monitoring system can grow. Recently, auto-powered wireless sensor has been considered as an alternative tool for economical and accurate realization of structural health monitoring system, being provided by the following essential features: on-board micro-processor, sensing capability, wireless communication, auto-powered battery, and low cost. In this work, an original harvester device is designed to supply wireless sensor system battery using train bogie energy. Piezoelectric materials have in here considered due to their established ability to directly convert applied strain energy into usable electric energy and their relatively simple modelling into an integrated system. The mechanical and electrical properties of the system are studied according to the project specifications. The numerical formulation is implemented with in-house code using commercial software tool and then experimentally validated through a proof of concept setup using an excitation signal by a real application scenario.

A single slotted morphing flap based on SMA technology

Salvatore Ameduri,Antonio Concilio,Rosario Pecora,Dimitrios Karagiannis 국제구조공학회 2016 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.17 No.5

In this paper, the activities carried out within the EU funded Clean Sky Joint Technology Initiative (JTI GRA) Project and aimed at developing a morphing flap, are illustrated. The reference device is a regional aircraft single slotted flap, enhanced with deforming capabilities to obtain improved hyper-lift performance. The design started with the identification of the internal architecture, intended to allow camber variations. A concentrated-hinge architecture was selected, for its ability to fit different curvatures and for the possibility of easily realizing an \"armadillo-like\" configuration, then avoiding the use of a complicate deformable skin. The flap layout is made of segmented ribs, elastically hinged each other and span-wise connected by conventional spars. Relative rotations of the rib elements are forced by SMA structural actuators, i.e., cooperating in the external loads absorption. Super-elastic SMA are used to make up recovery elastic elements, necessary to regain the original shape after activation. These further elements in turn contribute to the overall flap rigidity. After assessing the hinge number and the size of the SMA active and passive elements, the advanced design phase was dealt with. It was aimed at solving manufacturing issues and producing the executive drawings. The realized demonstrator was finally tested in lab conditions to prove its functionality in terms of whether target shape actuation or attained shape preservation under loads. On the basis of the numerical results and the experimental outcomes, precious hints were obtained for further developments of the concept.

A SMA-based morphing flap: conceptual and advanced design

Salvatore Ameduri,Antonio Concilio,Rosario Pecora 국제구조공학회 2015 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.16 No.3

In the work at hand, the development of a morphing flap, actuated through shape memory alloy load bearing elements, is described. Moving from aerodynamic specifications, prescribing the morphed shape enhancing the aerodynamic efficiency of the flap, a suitable actuation architecture was identified, able to affect the curvature. Each rib of the flap was split into three elastic elements, namely “cells”, connected each others in serial way and providing the bending stiffness to the structure. The edges of each cell are linked to SMA elements, whose contraction induces rotation onto the cell itself with an increase of the local curvature of the flap airfoil. The cells are made of two metallic plates crossing each others to form a characteristic “X” configuration; a good flexibility and an acceptable stress concentration level was obtained non connecting the plates onto the crossing zone. After identifying the main design parameters of the structure (i.e. plates relative angle, thickness and depth, SMA length, cross section and connections to the cell) an optimization was performed, with the scope of enhancing the achievable rotation of the cell, its ability in absorbing the external aerodynamic loads and, at the same time, containing the stress level and the weight. The conceptual scheme of the architecture was then reinterpreted in view of a practical realization of the prototype. Implementation issues (SMA - cells connection and cells relative rotation to compensate the impressed inflection assuring the SMA pre-load) were considered. Through a detailed FE model the prototype morphing performance were investigated in presence of the most severe load conditions.

Asymmetric Fingered TFT Structure: a New Architecture for Kink Effect and Off-Current Suppression and Improved Stability

        G. Fortunato,A. Bonfiglietti,A. Valletta,A. Pecora,L. Mariucci 한국물리학회 2006 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.48 No.I

The asymmetric fingered structure for polysilicon thin-film transistors (AF-TFTs) is analysed in detail by combining experimental characteristics and two-dimensional numerical simulations. This structure allows an effective reduction of the kink effect and off-current, without introducing any additional series resistance. In addition, a substantial improvement in the device stability is also observed when compared to conventional TFT. The AF-TFT characteristics have been explained by considering a two transistor model.
