Wind loads for high-solidity open-frame structures

Amoroso, Samuel D.,Levitan, Marc L. Techno-Press 2011 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.14 No.1

Open frame structures, such as those commonly found in industrial process facilities, are often densely occupied with process related equipment. This paper presents a method for estimating wind loads for high-solidity open frame structures that differs from current approaches, which accumulate wind load contributions from various individual structure components. The method considers the structure as a porous block of arbitrary plan dimension that is subject to wind from any direction. The proposed method compares favorably with wind tunnel test results for similar structures. The possibility of defining an upper bound force coefficient is also discussed.

Long-Term Biodiversity Research Programme for Mindanao, Philippines

Amoroso, Victor B. The Ecological Society of Korea 2000 Journal of Ecology and Environment Vol.23 No.2

The Long-Term Biodiversity Research Programme (LTBRP) for Mindanao is envisioned to be a collaborative programme of the Philippines. It will be a programmatic research on biodiversity - its status, threats. and conservation and management. The chosen research site is Mt. Malindang in Misamis Occidental of Mindanao. The BRP will support a set of research projects that will generate knowledge on biological and ecological, socio-economic. cultural and policy aspects of biodiversity conservation. It will also enable researchers to develop and try new methods for research on these aspects, separately or crossing boundaries of academic disciplines. Moreover. the BRP will implement support programmes which will provide the linkages of research activities to development issues and needs in the research site. The support programmes will also draw from the research projects, the knowledge that can be lent or immediately available to policy and programme formulation. The support programmes will comprise: human resource development or capability-building; information, education and communication; database; networking; community organizing: and development action. The BRP will be undertaken by a group of academie and research institutions from the Philippines, in partnership with their respective government entities and local government units in Mindanao. The Biodiversity Research Programme (BRP) will comprise a set of research projects to be undertaken by small research teams in the site. Researchable areas have been identified initially through the National Biodiversity Research Agenda. and later enriched in the Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) Analysis workshops by the Mindanao researchers and Philippine resource persons. Results of the PRA are presented in the paper.

Analysis of Data Spectral Regrowth from Nonlinear Amplification

Amoroso, Frank,Monzingo, Robert A. The Korean Institute of Communications and Informa 1999 Journal of communications and networks Vol.1 No.2

The regrowth of OQPSK power spectral sidelobes from AM/AM and AM/PM amplifier nonlinearity is analyzed. The time-domain expression for amplifier output shows how spectral re-growth will depend on the cubic coefficient of the Taylor's series of the amplifier nonlinearity as well as input amplitude ripple. Closed form spectrum calculations show that the spectral sidelobes produced by AM/PM take the same form as those produced by AM/AM. The rate of growth of AM/PM sidelobes is, however, not as great as for AM/AM.

Exploring the Personal Innovativeness Construct: The Roles of Ease of Use, Satisfaction and Attitudes

Amoroso, Donald L.,Lim, Ricardo A. The Korea Society of Management Information System 2015 Asia Pacific Journal of Information Systems Vol.25 No.4

The use of global mobile technology has increased exponentially. In particular, a survey of consumers in the Philippines showed that 83% "could not live" without their mobile phones. We investigated factors, such as ease of use and personal innovativeness, to elucidate the consumer adoption of mobile technologies in the Philippines, to integrate existing adoption theories for academics and provide recommendations to practitioners based on our findings. Our research questions are as follows: (1) What key factors drive adoption of mobile technologies by Filipino consumers?; (2) Are Filipino consumers innovative in their use of mobile technologies?; And (3) How can telecom companies retain their customers? A structural equation model, which was built from a survey of 528 mobile Filipino consumers, showed support for repurchase intention to use mobile technologies. The hypotheses were generally supported by variables related to mobile phone usage with the Philippine consumer sample. Results support all of the hypothesized relationships for consumers using mobile technologies. Personal innovativeness did load on both attitude and repurchase intention for mobile applications as originally hypothesized but was strongly loaded for attitude toward using. This research is a first step in understanding the adoption of mobile applications by Filipino consumers. We initially hypothesized that consumer behavior toward mobile applications would involve constructs of innovativeness, ease of use, and satisfaction; however, we found that ease of use was less significant in understanding repurchase intention to use mobile technologies. Personal innovativeness was more important in explaining satisfaction with mobile application attitudes and repurchase intention. The Filipino context of this study also provides other interesting implications. As the Philippines transitions into a more international market, western products start to guide market behavior, particularly consumer adoption.

Topotecan-Vincristine-Doxorubicin in Stage 4 High-Risk Neuroblastoma Patients Failing to Achieve a Complete Metastatic Response to Rapid COJEC: A SIOPEN Study

        Loredana Amoroso,Giovanni Erminio,Guy Makin,Andrew D. J. Pearson,Penelope Brock,Dominique Valteau-Couanet,Victoria Castel,Marlène Pasquet,Genevieve Laureys,Caroline Thomas,Roberto Luksch,Ruth Ladenste 대한암학회 2018 Cancer Research and Treatment Vol.50 No.1

Purpose Metastatic response to induction therapy for high-risk neuroblastoma is a prognostic factor. In the International Society of Paediatric Oncology Europe Neuroblastoma (SIOPEN) HR-NBL-1 protocol, only patients with metastatic complete response (CR) or partial response (PR) with " three abnormal skeletal areas on iodine 123-metaiodobenzylguanidine ([123I]mIBG) scintigraphy and no bone marrow disease proceed to high dose therapy (HDT). In this study, topotecan-vincristine-doxorubicin (TVD) was evaluated in patients failing to achieve these criteria, with the aim of improving the metastatic response rate. Materials and Methods Patients with metastatic high-risk neuroblastoma who had not achieved the SIOPEN criteria for HDT after induction received two courses of topotecan 1.5 mg/m2/day for 5 days, followed by a 48-hour infusion of vincristine, 2 mg/m2, and doxorubicin, 45 mg/m2. Results Sixty-three patients were eligible and evaluable. Following two courses of TVD, four (6.4%) patients had an overall CR, while 28 (44.4%) had a PR with a combined response rate of 50.8% (95% confidence interval [CI], 37.9 to 63.6). Of these, 23 patients achieved a metastatic CR or a PR with " 3 mIBG skeletal areas and no bone marrow disease (36.5%; 95% CI, 24.7 to 49.6) and were eligible to receive HDT. Toxicity was mostly haematological, affecting 106 of the 126 courses (84.1%; 95% CI, 76.5 to 90.0), and dose reduction was necessary in six patients. Stomatitis was the second most common nonhematological toxicity, occurring in 20 patients (31.7%). Conclusion TVD was effective in improving the response rate of high-risk neuroblastoma patients after induction with COJEC enabling them to proceed to HDT. However, the long-term benefits of TVD needs to be determined in randomized clinical trials.

An original device for train bogie energy harvesting: a real application scenario

Francesco Amoroso,Rosario Pecora,Monica Ciminello,Antonio Concilio 국제구조공학회 2015 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.16 No.3

Today, as railways increase their capacity and speeds, it is more important than ever to be completely aware of the state of vehicles fleet‟s condition to ensure the highest quality and safety standards, as well as being able to maintain the costs as low as possible. Operation of a modern, dynamic and efficient railway demands a real time, accurate and reliable evaluation of the infrastructure assets, including signal networks and diagnostic systems able to acquire functional parameters. In the conventional system, measurement data are reliably collected using coaxial wires for communication between sensors and the repository. As sensors grow in size, the cost of the monitoring system can grow. Recently, auto-powered wireless sensor has been considered as an alternative tool for economical and accurate realization of structural health monitoring system, being provided by the following essential features: on-board micro-processor, sensing capability, wireless communication, auto-powered battery, and low cost. In this work, an original harvester device is designed to supply wireless sensor system battery using train bogie energy. Piezoelectric materials have in here considered due to their established ability to directly convert applied strain energy into usable electric energy and their relatively simple modelling into an integrated system. The mechanical and electrical properties of the system are studied according to the project specifications. The numerical formulation is implemented with in-house code using commercial software tool and then experimentally validated through a proof of concept setup using an excitation signal by a real application scenario.

      • Predicting Loyalty of Korean Mobile Applications: A Dual-Factor Approach

        Donald L. Amoroso,Chulhwan Chris Bang,Jongheon Kim 한국디지털융합학회 2020 IJICTDC Vol.5 No.1

Recent mobile technology enables various types of mobile applications and payments and the market for those payments are still in the infant stage in Korea. In this early stage of new market development, the success of mobile application services highly depends on inducing new consumers and fostering their loyalty on the platform. This study adopts a Dual-Factor Model framework, with a dedication-constraint based model, in consideration of relevant factors that lead to consumers’ loyalty. To this end, this study collected survey data from 549 experienced users of mobile applications and payments and empirically tested the research model. The results indicate that consumers’ loyalty is highly determined by their satisfaction and their existing usage habit. Switching cost also showed a marginal effect on consumers’ loyalty. In addition, both extrinsic and intrinsic motivations - perceived value and perceived enjoyment – were found to be direct influences on the satisfaction construct. With this outcome in mind, this study reveals and suggests that future theoretical and practical exploration should focus on pursuing factors that stimulate both consumer satisfaction and habit to win and foster consumers’ loyalty in the usage of mobile applications.
