Acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC), an endogenous component of the L-carnitine family, is naturally occurring molecule synthesized from L-carnitine (LC) by carnitine acetyl transferase. ALC has been shown to improve the cognitive performance of patients suffering from dementia of the Alzheimer's type and proposed for treating Alzheimer's disease in pharmacological doses. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the bioequivalence of two ALC tablets, Nicetile^(TM) (Dong-A pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.) and Neurocetil^(TM) (Kyung-Dong Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.), according to the guidelines of Korea Food and Drug Administration. Twenty six normal male volunteers, 22.80±2.76 year in age and 63.07±7.98 ㎏ in body weight, were divided into two groups and a randomized 2 × 2 cross-over study was employed. After one tablet containing 500 ㎎ of ALC was orally administered, blood was taken at predetermined time intervals and the concentrations of ALC in serum were determined using HPLC with fluorescence detector. Because of the presence of endogenous ALC, the calibration was performed using dialyzed serum. Pharmacokinetic parameters such as AUC_t, C_(max) and T_(max) were calculated and ANOVA was utilized for the statistical analysis of the parameters. The results showed that the differences in AUC_t, C_(max) and T_(max) between two tablets were 2.72%, -0.65% and -8.42%, respectively, when calculated against the Nicetile^(TM) tablet. The powers (1-β) for AUC_t and C_(max) were 94.87% and 87.17%, respectively. Minimum detectable differences (△) at α=0.05 and 1-β=0.8 were less than 20% (e.g., 15.58% and 19.16% AUC_t and C_(max), respectively). The 90% confidence intervals were within ±20% (e.g., -11.84∼6.41 and -10.57∼11.88 for AUC_t and C_(max), respectively). Two parameters met the criteria of KFDA for bioequivalence, indicating that Neurocetil^(TM) tablet is bioequivalent to Nicetile^(TM) tablet.

N/A 131I-6β-iodomethyl-19-norcholesterol(NP-59) has an advantage to assess adrenal dysfunction caused by adrenal cortical disorders. The aim of this study is to evaluate the clinical usefulness of NP-59 scintigraphy in each adrenral disease. Ten patients who did eleven NP-59 adrenal scintigraphies at Dong-A University Hospital from March 1990 to December 1996 were selected as the subject. Among the subject there were 5 cases of Cushing's syndrome, 2 cases of incidentaloma, 1 case of metastatic adrenal tumor, liver cirrhosis with hirsutism and hypertension respectively. Among 5 case of Cushing's syndrome, there were 2 cases of Cushing's disease, 2 cases of adrenal adenoma and 1 case of adrenal carcinoma. There are no disagreement between clinical diagnosis and scan finding in Cushing's syndrome. In 2 incidentaloma cases, even though one is interpretated as a functioning tumor, both of 2 cases could avoid unnecessary biopsy according to scintigraphy result. One case of hirsutism, clinically adrenal originated, revealed the normal scintigraphic hirsutism was extra-adrenal origin. One case of hypertension took the study to exclude the possibility of primary aldosteronism. Normal suppression scan finding revealed that primary aldosteronism did not exist in this case. In conclusion, NP-59 scintigraphy was very useful in diagnosis and differential diagnosis of Cushing's syndrome and it could avoid unnecessary biopsy in the incidental adrenal tumor.

A magnetic levitation is suitable for moving materials in such a clean environment which must be kept free from even microscopic dust motes, for example, in a super clean room in LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) manufacturing plants and PDP(Plasma Display Panel) or biochemical plants, delicate medical machines, because friction can be disappeared or reduced. In addition to this, another advantage of levitation is that the manipulator can operate as a rigid body rather than using joints parts. In this work, the magnetic levitation is applied to transport a several liquid crystal display classes between LCD fabrication process modules in clean rooms because it can eliminate particles and oil contamination that normally exits in conventional transport systems due to contact motions of mechanical component. The transport system consists of a carrier, levitation track, and propelling system. Levitation is achieved by using antagonistic forces produced between electromagnet tracks and permanent magnets. Stabilization is achieved by using a simple feedback control. The continuous propelling force is obtained by sending specific current patterns to the propulsion coils.

한국인 태아 췌장도 발육에 관한 면역조직화학적 연구

The pancreases of Korean human fetuses aged from 13 to 40 weeks were studied immunohistochemically to observe the development of the pancreatic islet, frequency of single endocrine cell and composition of pancreatic islet. 1. The volume fractions of endocrine tissue of the fetal pancreas were higher value(from 7 to 8%). However, the relative values of the endocrine tissues that obtained from 5 to 10 month old fetuses were constant. 2. The exocrine tissue were slowly increased during the intrauterine life. On the other hand, the connective tissue were gradually decreased in the same time. 3. At the mid-term, the number of single alpha cells were similar to that of delta cells. The number of beta cell decreased in comparison with that of non-beta cells(p<0.01). At the term, the number of single alpha, beta and delta cells were not significant. These data indicated that the epithelial cells of pancreatic duct were budding during intrauterine life. 4. At the mid-term, the pancreatic islets were composed of about 36% of alpha and beta cells respectively and 28% of delta cells. At the term the pancreatic were composed of 33% of alpha cells, 41% of beta cells and 26% of delta cells, respectively. The fetal panreatic islet showed numerous delta cells but the beta cells occupied one half of the adult islets. 5. The mantle islet was one of the typical features of fetal pancreatic islet. It was composed of the central core of beta cells and peripheral zone of alpha and delta cells interposed with a few of beta cells.

Garre씨 골수염의 증례보고

Authors experienced Garre's osteomyelitis that showed 24 years male patient who visited the Dental Hospital of College of Dentistry of Dankook University because of right facial asymmetry from recurred swelling in right mandibular angle area. Because we thought that this case was rare, we examined the clinical, radiological, histopathological features, and discussed the etiologic factors and the pathogenesis of Garre's osteomyelitis through a review of literature. The results were as followings. 1. In clinical features, 24 years male patient showed right facial asymmetry from recurred swelling in right mandibular angle area. 2. In radiographic features, slight periosteal bone formation in right mandibular angle area was found. 3. In histopathologic features, parallel trabecular orientation that occurred perpendicular to the cortex was associated with medullary trabecular in the back ground of hemorragic loose connective tissue with lymphocytes and plasma cells. Many lamellated trabecular lined by active osteoblast cells were found. In other area, empty lacunae in trabecular were observed. 4. We considered the etiologic focus to be a low grade infection from prolonged infection right 1st mandibular molar.

장상피화생과 Helicobactor pylori와의 상관 관계에 관한 연구

In 1965 Lauren divided advanced gastric carcinoma into two main types-namely, "intestinal" and "diffuse" type carcinoma, which differ not only morphologically but also in their clinical and epidemiological characteristics. Moreover, a different histogenetic process has been postulated by many authors that intestinal type gastric carcinoma might arise from areas with intestinal metaplasia. Since Warren and Marshall reported the presence of Helicobacter pylori in the stomach in 1983, strong evidence has been obtained that there is a close relationship between Helicobacter pylori and chronic gastritis, atrophic gastritis, intestinal metaplasia, and intestinal type gastric carcinoma. To study the relationship between intestinal metaplasia and Helicobacter pylori infection, we performed gastroscopic biopsies and CLO tests taken from patients with epigastric pain. Only 87 patients with macroscopically suspected antral gastritis were included. The prevalence of intestinal metaplasia in gastric antral biopsies increased from 33.3% in the age group<30 years to 63.6% in the age group 60 years. When all patients were divided into two age groups-namely, (i)<50 years(n=41) and (ii)≥ 50 years(n-=46), intestinal metaplasia was found significantly more often in patients ≥ 50 years. ((i) 39.2%, (ii) 54.3%, p<0.0001). The prevalence of Helicobacter pylori in gastric antral biopsies decreased from 66.7% in the age group<30 years to 62.5%, in the age group in the age group 50 to 59 years. When all patients were divided into the same two age groups-namely(i)<50 years and (ii)≥50 years, the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori did not differ between two groups in a statistically significant way. The mean age of intestinal metaplasia positive patients who were also Helicobacter pylori positive was 48±11.0(mean±S.D.)years, whereas the mean age of intestinal metaplasia positive patients who were Helicobacter pylori negative was 52±9.7(mean±S.D.)years. In conclusion. although our data do not prove a causal relationship between Helicobacter pylori infection and the histogenesis of intestinal metaplasia, we suggest that Helicobacter pylori plays an important role in the development of intestinal metaplasia in the gastric mucosa. Whether Helicobacter pylori has to be present at all times during this process or is only necessary as a 'trigger', needs further research.

Many European institutions and companies are developing ceramic filters which can substitute particulates and gas removal devices currently in use and which are believed to be the control devices of next generation. Because of their resistance to both chemical and thermal shocks, Ceramic filter system alone can remove particulates and gaseous air pollutants simultaneously without compulsory cooling systems, thus reducing installation and operating cost significantly. In this research, there is developed and tested, which is catalyst impregnated ceramic filters applicable to simultaneous removal of particulates and gaseous air pollutants. Emission standards of air pollutants are getting stringent and the market share of air pollutants control devices in Korea is projected up to 800 billion won by the year 2002 and low density ceramic filter system can substitute electrostatic precipitators and conventional bag filter systems significantly. catalyst doped ceramic filter were believed to be the most promising technology which can substitute particulates and gaseous pollutants removal devices in the near future.

방사선조사후 타액선 조직세포변화에 따른 타액분비의 감소에 관한 실험적 연구

After single fraction of 2, 5, 10 Gy irradiation on submandibular gland of 32 male rats, weighting 150 gm, respectively, these animal were sacrificed after 1, 7, 15 hours, 1, 3, 7, 14 days after irradiation. And excised submandibular gland were fixed in Bouin's solution for 2 hours. Paraffin sections were stained with H & E, and PAS for change of salivary gland tissue in order to get regeneration of salivary gland tissue cells and saliva secretion after irradiation. The results were following. 1. In PAS statining after 3 days of 5 Gy irradiation, decreased mucine serction of serous cells were seen, and after 7 dyas of 10 Gy irradiation, decreased mucine secretion of mucous cells were seen. Increased saliva secretion except mucous cells after 14 days was seen, but no resecretion of salivary gland tissue cells was observed in 10 Gy irradiation. 2. After 3 days of 2 Gy irradiation, 1 day of 5 Gy, and 15 yours of 10 Gy, degeneration of serous cells was seen and regeneration of these cells was seen after 14 days except 10 Gy irradiation.
