        ABSTRACT - This study investigated factors affecting assimilation of naphthalene in two wetland substrates: a mineral-dominated wetland soil and organic matter-dominated wetland soil. Assimilation of naphthalene in two wetland system was enhanced by rapid mineralization rate, sorption on wetland soil and diffusive exchange between the overlying water column and bed. Degradation appeared to be dependent on the presence of aerobic conditions in the wetland soil. High concentration of dissolved organic carbon(DOC) in the organic matter-dominated wetland soil decreased sorption. Large differences in the DOC concentrations for the aerobic and anaerobic suspension suggest a role for this phase in the sorption of naphthalene. These results indicate that several processes affect the assimilation of organic contaminants in wetlands, including biodegradation, sorption, and sediment-water exchange.

        Cadmium, a major aquatic pollutant in many parts of the world, is toxic and readily accumulated in aquatic organisms. It mainly exists in water as complexes with organic ligands such as dissolved organic carbon and this complexation is known to have effects on the aquatic toxicities. In this study, acute toxicity, histology, and bioaccumulation were studied to evaluate effects of humic acid on cadmium toxicity and bioavailability to fish using Oryzias latipcs and Cypriruts carpio. 96h~LC50 of cadmium was 6.38 mg/L using Oryzias latipes. However, the mortality showed the dose-dependent decrease when humic acid was added to the test solution. When fish were exposed to 5 mg/L of cadmium, histological changes in the exposed organs (caudal fins, gills, kidney, liver, and gut) of Cyprinifs carpio were decreased by humic acid, especially in kidney and liver. Bioaccumulation of cadmium also decreased by treatment of humic acid. It seems that the formation of complexes between cadmium and humic acid may decrease bioavailability of cadmium to fish, and thus reduce the toxic effects of cadmium.

      • 우리나라 여성의 임신 중 커피 음용 실태와 산모혈 및 제대혈 중 지질치 변화에 미치는 영향

        To investigate the effect of coffee consumption during pregnancy on serum lipids in maternal and infants' umbilical cord blood, 76 cases of newborn infants and women delivered of a child who had delivered at hospital located in Chung-Ju city from Feb. 1. 1996 to Aug. 31. 1996 were studied. The gestational ages of cases were 37 to 42 weeks and the average maternal ages were 28.3±4.63 years old without any other medical or obstetric problems. Infants' Apgar scores and birth weights were decreased by above 3 cups per day of coffee consumption during pregnancy. No relationships between coffee consumption during pregnancy and maternal serum lipid levels were observed. However, serum total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol levels in infants' umbilical cord were significantly increased with increasing coffee consumption during pregnancy. In contrary to coffee consumption, alcohol drinking habits affected maternal serum lipid levels but not serum lipid levels in infants' umbilical cord blood. Coffee consumption during pregnancy increased caffeine concentration in infants' umbilical cord blood. These results suggest that caffeine from maternal consumption of coffee can easily pass to the fetus and significantly affect serum lipids levels in infants' umbilical cord blood rather than those in maternal blood.

      • 디젤분진이 사람 동맥 평활근 세포(VSMC)에 미치는 영향

        The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of diesel exhaust particles on human aortic vascular smooth muscle cells(VSMCs). DNA synthesis, cell viability and morphology of VSMCs after treatment of diesel exhaust particles(DEP) and fine particulate matter(PM_(2.5)) were assayed. PM_(2.5) inhibited the DNA synthesis of VSMCs in a concentration-dependent manner, whereas DEP did not affect VSMCs up to 50㎍/mL . These results were confirmed by morphological examination of VSMCs. PM_(2.5) showed a dose-dependent cytotoxicity of VSMCs by MTT assay. Fraction 4(organic acids) and fraction8(moderately polar compounds) showed the most potent inhibition of DNA synthesis of VSMCs, and fraction7(slightly polar compounds), fraction9(higher polar compounds), and fraction6(aromatic compounds) were next order. These results were confirmed by morphological examination of VSMCs. These results suggest that PM_(2.5) inhibits the DAN synthesis of VSMCs through the cytotoxicity.

        Diesel exhaust panicle (<25μm, DEP_(2.5)) is known to be probarbly carcinogenie (IARC group 2A) DEP_(2.5) contains organic compounds such as polycyclicatomatic hydrocarbon (PAH), heterocyclic compounds, phenols, and nitroarenes Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are generated by DEP_(2.5) without any biological activation system Therefore, an alternative mechanism by which DEP_(2.5) could be carcinogenic is known by the generation of oxidative DNA damage The aim of this study was to investigate genotoxic effects of DEP_(2.5) using single cell gel electrophoresis In order to evaluate the mechanisms of DEP_(2.5) genotoxicity, the rat microsome mediated and DNA repan enzyme treated comet assays together with routine comet assay were performed DEP_(2.5) was collected from diesel engine bus and dichloiomethane extract was obtained The organic extract of DEP_(2.5) revealed DNA damage itself in NIH/3T3 cells And it showed both oxidative and microsome mediated DNA damages Vitamin C as an model antioxidant reduced DNA damage in endonuclase Ⅲ treated comet assay One of flavonoid, galangin as a CYP[A] inhibitor reduced DNA damage in the presence of S-9 mixture Our results show that DEP_(2.5) ate genotoxic and a great source of oxidative stress, but antioxidants can significantly reduce oxidative DNA damages And DEP_(2.5) may contain indirect mutagens which can be inhibited by CYP inhibitors.

      • 랫드에서 l-muscone의 급성독성 및 아급성독성시험 연구

        l-Muscone is synthesized for use as substitutive material of musk which is the active ingredient of woohwangchungsimwon. The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the acute and subacute toxicity of l-muscone in rats. In oral acute toxicity test, SPF Sprague-Dawley male and female rats were gavaged with l-muscone of two doses(0, 5.0g/㎏). No dead animal and abnormal autopsy findings were found in control and treated group. Body weights were slightly decreased in both sexes of rats treated with 5.0g/㎏. Therefore, oral LD_50 of l-muscone was consider to be higher than 5.0g/㎏ in male and female rats. In intraperitoneal acute toxicity test, rats were injected intraperitoneally with dosages of 0, 1,000, 1,316, 1,732, 2,279 and 3,000 ㎎/㎏. Decreased body weights and motor activities were observed at high dose group. Intraperitoneal LD_50 of l-muscone were 1,920 ㎎/㎏ in male and female rats. In the subacute study. l-muscone was administrated orally to both sexes of rats for 4 weeks as several doses(0, 10, 100 and 1,000 ㎎/㎏). There were neither dead animals nor significant changes of body weights during the experimental period. In addition, no differences were found between control and treated groups in clinical signs, urinalysis, hematology, serum biochemical analysis, and other findings. Above data suggest that no observed adverse effect level of l-muscone in rats might be over 1,000 ㎎/㎏/day in this study.

        방진마스크의 Stainless steel arc 용접흄 여과효율에 관한 연구

        The purpose of this study was to investigate for filtration efficiency of several dust masks, comparing with filtration efficiency certified by KOSHA(Korea Occupational Safety & Health Agency), and to require of the right use of protective respirator. Using a welding fume generator and chamber, several dust masks, which were widely used in the workplaces in korea, were tested for their filtering efficiency for stainless steel are welding fume. The filtration efficiency testing system consisted of a welding fume generator, a chamber and a filtration unit. The filtration unit was made of a mask which was inserted into the sampling cassette and another sampling cassette, which contained mixed cellulose ester filter paper. These two cassettes were connected with tubing. Stainless steel arc welding fume generator was delivered into an chamber. The welding fume in the chamber was passed into the filtration unit with flow rate of 30 liter/min. The welding fume filtration efficiency was evaluated by gravimetric measurement. Metal concentrations in the welding fume before and after filtration were measured with inductive coupling plasma analyzer. Following results were obtained: Filtration efficiency of welding fume for comm hygienic mas was 63.82% and the average efficiencies for A, B, C, D, E, F and G masks were 94.62% 96.58%, 83.20%, 82.76%, 77.25%, 86.55% and 93.22%, respectively. Our results indicate that dust masks used widely in the welding workplaces in korea are not proper for protecting worker's health and then the use of fume mask should be required.

      • 산업폐수처리장 방류수의 내분비계 장애작용 평가

        This study was designed to investigate potential endocrine disrupting effects of several industrial wastewater effluents discharged from cosmetic, plaiting, paint, textile industry using EROD bioassay and E-Screen assay The results of E-screen assay showed that textile industrial wastewater could act as a full agonist and cosmetics and plaiting industrial wastewater could act as a partial agonist On the contrary, the wastewater discharged from paint industry did not show any estrogenic effect Estrogenic activity in the effluents of cosmetic and paint industrial wastewater was lower than that in the influents indicating that the wastewater treatment process minimized the effects of discharges on water quality Despite of these results, it was recognized that wastewater treatment was not always minimize toxic impact In this study, increased estrogenic effect was observed in the effluents of plating and textile wastewater, and EROD activity was increased in the effluents of cosmetic and plating wastewater.
