        Background: The number of glomerulus has been considered one of the etiologic factors especially for focal segmental glomerulosclerosis. However, glomeruli are too many to calculate them correctly. Although the fractionator method has became convinced, in which they used selected sections, not whole kidney sections, with same intervals, it is also very hard to get good results. Because it is still very time-consuming and laborous work which leads to make big observers' biases. Methods and Materials: We designed the index for glomerular number to estimate the tendency of increase or decrease of the number of it in different kidneys and which was evaluated by other conventional methods including fractionator method. Index was based upon the theory by Nyengaard; "the number of glomerulus correlates with the weight of kidney, which is positively correlated with body weight". Calculating formula is the number of glomeruli/surface areas of cortices, which contain calculacted glomeruli multiplies by kidney weight/body weight. Results: We applied this index to kidneys of FGSKist mouse and those of RFM/Nga mouse. The former is spontaneous glomerulosclerosis model with heavy protein uria and renal faille and the latter is the mother side of FGS/Kist mouse but has no glomerular disease or protein aria. The number of glomerulus of FGS/Kist mouse was decreased by 30% to those of RFM/Nga mouse. Conclusion: This index was useful and reliable for estimating the relative glomerular number between two groups.

      • 헬리코박터 파이로리 균 진단용 ^13C-요소 캅셀의 개발

        The purpose of this study was to develop a new ^13C-urea-containing capsule for diagnosis of H.pylori. The urea-containing capsules were prepared with various diluents such as polyethylene glycol (PEG), microcrystaline cellulose, sodium lauryl sulfate and citric acid. The dissolution test, ^13C-urea breath test and stability test were then performed on the capsules. Microcrystalline cellulose and sodium lauryl sulfate retarded the initial dissolution rates of urea. However, PEG increased the initial dissolution rates of urea. Furthermore, two formulae composed of PEG,[^13C-urea/PEG (38/1.9 mg/cap)] and [^13C-urea/PEG (38/1.9/1.9 mg/cap)] had the maximum DOB value. about 16 at 20 min, while the formula composed of only 38 mg ^13C-urea had the maximum DOB value at 30 min. The results indicated that PEG improved the sensitivity of ^13C-urea in the human volunteers. The capsule [^13C-urea/PEG (38/1.9 mg/cap)] was stable for at least six months in 25 and 37℃. Thus, a PEG-containing capsule, [^13C-urea/PEG (38/1.9 mg/cap)] would be a more economical, sensitive and stable perparation for diagnosis of H. pylori.

        한국인의 기능성 소화불량증 환자에서의 증상관찰, 아형분류 및 이에 대한 시사프리드의 효과

        Background/Aims : The aims of this study were to determine subgoups of functional dyspesia and to evaluate the short-term effect of cisapride in patients with functional dyspepsia in Korea. Methods . 1025 patients, with a mean age of 42.6 years, with symptoms of functional dyspepsia, were recruited consecutively and upper gastrointestinal symptoms were investigated by interview in 41 hospitals in Korea. In an open, multicenter trial, 1025 patients received Smg of cisapride three times a day (TID) for at least .2 weeks for the treatment of symptoms of functional dyspepsia. When necessary, the dose of cisapride was increased to 10mg TID and the duration of therapy was extended to 4 weeks. Results . The most frequently reported symptoms of functional dyspepsia were epigastric discomfort or fullness (85%), bloating (70%), belching (53%), early satiety (52%) and epigastric pain (46%) retrospectively. Subgroups of functional dyspepsia were as follows; dysmotility-like 73.5%, ulcer-like 39.7%, reflux-like 13.0%, and unspecified dyspepsia 14.0%. However, 33.2% of subjects with functional dyspepsia could be classified into more than one subgroup. Upper gastrointestinal symptoms were decreased to average 50.3% (range; 42.2 to 59.2%) after 2 weeks of cisapride treatment and to 25% (19.2 to 29.9%) after 4 weeks. cisapride therapy resulted in good or excellent improvement in 59.0% of the patients after two weeks, in 75% of patients after 4 weeks. Adverse events were occurred in 52 patients (5.8% of all patients), most commonly, loose stools or diarrhea (3.5%), abdominal pain (1.1%), and dizziness (0.3%). The majority of adverse events was mild and transient in nature and led to premature discontinuation of treatment in 4 patients. Conclusions . Although the majorities of patients with functional dyspepsia have dysmotility like symptoms in Korea, there is such overlap among the dyspepsia subgroups. Most patients responded well to a short therapeutic trial with cisapride without significant side effects.

        A Water Extract of Artemisia capillaris Prevents 2,2'-Azobis(2-Amidinopropane) Dihydrochloride-Induced Liver Damage in Rats

        A water extract of Artemisia capillarisThunberg (Compositae) was investigated for protective effects againstoxidative stress induced by 2,2.-azobis(2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride (AAPH) in Sprague-Dawley male rats. Rats wereorally administered A. capillariswater extract (ACWE; 7.5 g/kg) for 7 days before AAPH treatment (60 mg/kg). AAPH in-toxication significantly elevated enzyme markers of liver injury (glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase and glutamic pyruvictransaminase). The pre-administration of ACWE significantly reduced the liver-damaging effects of AAPH as indicated bythe low levels of these enzymes. Moreover, the ACWE administration significantly attenuated the accumulation of thiobar-bituric acid-reactive substances in both plasma and liver tissues compared with those of rats administered AAPH alone. Fur-thermore, ACWE administration slightly improved the liver reduced glutathione levels and enhanced the production of an-tioxidant enzymes like catalase. A. capillariscontained 10.1 mg of catechin in 100 g of dried sample; the high-performanceliquid chromatography results showed catechin composition in the ACWE to be 28% (. )-epigallocatechin gallate, 49% (. )-epigallocatechin, and 23% other catechins. These observations clearly indicate that ACWE contains antioxidant catechins ca-pable of ameliorating the AAPH-induced hepatic injury by virtue of its antioxidant activity.

        옥수수의 발아과정중(發芽過程中) AMYLASE 활성

        Changes of starch, soluble sugar and activities of amylase in germinating maize seeds were studied with comparison of germinating barley seeds. The starch in the endosperm was degraded slowly during the course of germination, and starch degradation of maize seeds compared with barley seed was found after 2 or 4 days of seed germination. There was a transient decline of soluble sugar come-its in ungerminated seed at early stages, followed by the rapid increase which concided with the degradation of starch. Activities of amylases were increased with the progress of germination, and maximum activities were founded after 8 days of seed germination. The higher activities of α- and β-amylase were found at Hwang-ok maize and barley, respectively.

        Pathologic-anatomic and pathologic-histologic studies were made on one autopsy case of congenital syphilis which waas serologrcally confirmed in maternal and cord blood, being accompanied with adrenal cyomegalia. Microscopical findinfs are principally composed of diffuse visceral fibrosis and widespread extramedullary hemopoiesis. Visceral fibrosis was most severe in the liver and pancreas, although spleen, lungs, kidneys and adrenal glands are also involved. Hear shows a focal hematopoietic lesion. Thymus cintains many foci of Dubois abscess. Liver is characterized by extensive periportal and intralobular connective tissue increase and laso extensive hematopoietic foci. The fibrotic change is more marked in right lobe especially around ductus venusus. Giant cell transformation of hepatic cells is also prominent. Lungs are enlarged and uniformly firm. In teralveolar septa show diffuse connective tissue increase and mononuclear cell infiltration. spleen is enlarged and also shows connective tissue proloferatin and numerous macrophages in between the splenic sinusoids. Adrenal gands are slighty thickended in capsular structure and the connective tissue increase is focally extended inward between the cords of cells of the permanent cortex. The fetal portion of the cortex shows a widespread change in the size, shape and nuclear pattern of its constituent cells. The cells are polyhedral measuring up to 45μ in diameter, and structures resembling inclusions are present. Brain shows syphilitic leptomenimgitis.

        Background: The location of parotid gland tumors can influence the duration and the difficulty of the operation. If the information about tumor location was available preoperatively, it would allow accurate operative planning and counseling of patients in terms of the length of the operation and the potential morbidity. Methods: This study was based on a retrospective review of 100 patients with parotid gland tumors underwent parotidectomy from January 2000 to October 2005 at Yong-Dong Severance Hospital. Based on computed tomographic(CT) scan findings, 4 landmarks such as facial nerve(FN) line, Utrecht(U) line, Conn's are(CA), and retromandibular vein (RV) were drawn on the scans in same plane. The location of tumors were determined by the landmarks and confirmed by the operative findings. The accuracy of each landmarks was evaluated. To find out the accuracies according to tumor size, the tumors were divided into 2 groups; less than 2 cm and larger than 2 cm in diameter. Results: U line was the most accurate(94%), sensitive(89.3%) and specific(97.7%) in predicting tumor location of the parotid gland. However, in small tumors less than 2cm, FN line (p=0.022) and RV criteria (p=0.028) were more reliable in accuracy. Conclusion: CA, FN line, U line, and RV are all useful landmarks in preoperative prediction for the location of parotid gland tumors. However, U line was the most accurate, but we must consider that proper landmark should be used in prediction according to the size of tumor because the accuracy of landmark may change.

      • Verbal working memory dysfunction in schizophrenia: an FMRI investigation.

        <P>Impaired processing of working memory information is one of the cognitive deficits seen in patients with schizophrenia. This study aims at corroborating the differences in the brain activities involved in the process of working memory between patients with schizophrenia and the controls. Twelve patients with schizophrenia and 11 controls participated in the study. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to assess cortical activities during the performance of a two-back verbal working memory paradigm using the Korean alphabet as mnemonic content. Group analysis revealed that inferior fontal, middle frontal, and superior temporal region showed decreased cortical activities in the patient group compared to those of the controls. This study showed a decreased activation in inferior fontal (BA 47), middle frontal (BA 6), and superior temporal (BA 22/38) neural networks from the patient group and confirmed the earlier findings on the impaired working memory of schizophrenic patients in the fMRI investigation.</P>
