Heliopsis longipes has been recognized as a potential source of insecticidal compounds called alkamides, which can be used to control populations of insect vector transmitters of several diseases that affect the human health. To determine the insecticidal activity of H. longipes against Anopheles albimanus and Aedes aegypti, crude extract of H. longipes roots and affininwere obtained. Catalytic reduction of affininwas performed to obtain two reduced amides, N-isobutil-2E-decenamide and N-isobutil-decanamide. Crude extract, affinin and its reduced amides were evaluated against third instar larvae of An. albimanus and Ae. aegypti. Results show that crude extract of H. longipes possess larvicidal activity against larval stage of An. albimanus and Ae. aegypti. This effect could be attributed to affinin, on which the conjugated double bonds present in the structure of the molecule are necessary to maintain larvicidal activity. This study demonstrated the potential of H. longipes to control larval stage of An. albimanus and Ae. aegypti, transmitter vectors of malaria and dengue fever, respectively.

Toxic Leukoencephalopathy refers to a spectrum of leukoencephalopathies caused by iatrogenic, drug, hypoxic or infectious insults to the white matter. “Chasing the Dragon” refers to the inhalation of heated heroin fumes. Case presentation: A 31 year old gentleman with no past medical history after loss of consciousness followed by unresponsiveness for 3 hours, after his fi rst time of having “chased the dragon”, was admitted to ICU with respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation, recovered and returned to normal functioning within one week. Behavior was at his baseline for 2 weeks after discharge, followed by sudden onset odd behavior. On exam he was alert, but apathetic; he was mute with inappropriate smiling and following simple commands. He had functional urinary-fecal incontinence, symmetric hyperrefl exia in lower extremities and upgoing toes. HIV, syphilis, b12 defi ciency, high sedimentation rate were ruled out. Cerebrospinal fl uid showed elevated protein level. Electroencephalogram showed diffuse slowing. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed diffuse bilateral cerebral periventricular and deep and subcortical white matter high T2/FLAIR signal intensities. At 5-weeks follow up, he was talkative and coherent, with adequate affect. Cognitive Linguistic Quick Test 8-weeks after discharge, demonstrated mild attention, moderate memory and severe executive functions impairment, normal language and moderate Clock Drawing Severity Rating. Discussion: Post-hypoxic and “Chasing the Dragon” leukoencephalopathies are among the unique causes of delayed-onset toxic leukoencephalopathies. Onset usually occurs 1-3 weeks after the insult as in this patient, who developed the akinetic-mutism form of DPHL and lacked the primarily cerebellar/ataxic syndrome typical of HL. MRI fi ndings were diffuse and lacked the predominantly posterior and cerebellar distribution of HL, supporting the diagnosis of DPHL. As in our patient, most people with DPHL will improve within 3 to 12 months, but impaired attention and executive functions usually persist.

In this study, the effects of different concentrations of vanadium (V), selenium (Se), cerium (Ce), and iodine (I) on the growth parameters, biomass accumulation, and content of photosynthetic pigments during the seedling stage of marigold (Calendula officinalis L.) were evaluated. The beneficial elements V (3, 5, or 10 μM), Se (5, 10, or 20 μM), Ce (25, 50, or 100 μM), and I (5 or 10 μM) were applied once a week along with 50% Hoagland nutritive solution. Four applications were applied to the roots. Doses of 5 μM V and 50 μM Ce improved plant height, while 5 μM I promoted root growth. Leaf area and number of leaves increased with the application of 20 μM Se and 5 μM I, respectively. High concentrations of Se and Ce improved leaf dry weight, while 10 μM V increased the photosynthetic pigment content. The application of these elements contributed to the development and production of marigold seedlings during nursery growth.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the role of Blastocystis sp. in gastrointestinal symptoms reported by adult patients in a Peruvian hospital. A case-control 3:1 study was performed at the outpatient clinic. Direct stool examinations were done. One hundred sixty patients were included, 40 cases and 120 controls. Positivity to Blastocystis sp. was associated with dyspepsia (P <0.001), bloating (P <0.001) and abdominal pain (P = 0.03) in patients attending our hospital outpatient clinic.

Hedeoma drummondii (poleo) has been used by Mexicans to prepare a tea for its pleasant taste. The methanolic extract, polar fractions, and major antioxidant compounds of the Mexican herbal tea obtained from aerial parts of H. drummondii (“poleo”) showed antiproliferative effects against the cancer cell lines MCF-7 (human breast) and HeLa (human cervix). Phenolic acids isolated from poleo have significant antiproliferative effects with caffeic acid the most potent. This evidence suggests that herbal poleo tea may have chemopreventive properties.

Myostatin is a transforming growth factor-β family member who acts as a negative regulator of skeletal muscle growth. The interference of its biological activity could increase skeletal muscle growth with clinical and animal production applications. A strategy to block the myostatin action is by the induction of an immune response against it. In this work, we evaluated as an immunogen a recombinant myostatin fused to the tetanic toxin T- helper epitopes P2 and P30. Genetic constructs of the chimeric myostatin were cloned in an expression vector and used as a DNA vaccine. Besides, a chimeric genetic construct, P2-miostatin–P30 was expressed in Escherichia coli, obtaining a recombinant chimeric antigen. To find out the functionality of these genetic constructs as a vaccine in inducing muscle growth responses, experimental groups of BALB/c mice were DNA immunized with the myostatin fused to P2, P30 or both. Furthermore, to improve the immune response, a heterologous prime–boost immunization scheme was evaluated where the DNA inoculation was followed by immunization with the recombinant antigen P2-myostatin-P30. The different body segments weight was recorded in control and vaccinated mice groups, finding increased muscle masses in the vaccinated groups. These experiments showed the effectiveness of the P2 and P30 Thelper epitopes in inducing an immune response to the fused myostatin, leading to muscle growth. The heterologous prime-boost immunization protocol is a promising vaccination strategy reducing the time and amount of antigen used to induce a immune response to myostatin.

Background/Aims: Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is the preferred technique for treating early gastric cancer (EGC). However, very few studies have been conducted in South America. This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of ESD for EGC. Methods: We analyzed data from a prospective cohort from 2013 to 2020. A total of 152 superficial gastric neoplasms that fulfilledthe absolute or expanded criteria for ESD were included. Outcomes were en bloc, R0, and curative resection rates, incidence ofadverse events, and length of procedure. Results: The age of the enrolled patients was 68.4±11.3 years. The number of included patients based on the absolute and expandedindications was 150 and 2, respectively. En bloc, R0, and curative resections were achieved in 98.0%, 96.1%, and 89.5% of the cases, respectively. Bleeding and perforation were reported in 5.9% and 6.6% of the cases, respectively. Histopathological examinationrevealed low-grade dysplasia, high-grade dysplasia, well-differentiated adenocarcinoma, and poorly differentiated adenocarcinomain 13, 20, 117, and 2 cases, respectively. Conclusions: Our study shows that ESD performed by properly trained endoscopists in reference centers is safe and effective, withcomparable therapeutic outcomes to those reported in the Eastern series.
