The Effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy on Depressive Symptoms in North Korean Refugees

        Jeon Sehyun,Lee Jiyoun,Jun Jin Yong,Park Young Su,Cho Jaehee,Choi Jaeryung,Jeon Younsuk,Kim Seog Ju 대한신경정신의학회 2020 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.17 No.7

Objective Despite the growing need for psychological programs for North Korean refugees, most psychological interventions for these people lack a verification study that tests their effectiveness. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in North Korean refugees. Methods Participants included 38 North Korean refugees, of whom 23 participated in simple relaxation and 15 participated in CBT. The Korean version of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory-State (STAI-S), and Impact of Event Scale-Revised were used to evaluate symptoms pre- and post-intervention.Results Participants had a significant decrease in CES-D scores after treatment (p=0.037). The decrease in CES-D was larger in those who participated in the CBT compared to those in simple relaxation (p=0.023). The superior effects that CBT had on depressive symptoms over simple relaxation were particularly more prominent in those with severe depression (p=0.035). Participants with high levels of anxiety also showed significant decreases in STAI-S scores after treatment, regardless of which type of program they participated in (p=0.023).Conclusion This preliminary findings suggests that CBT is an effective psychiatric approach in treating depressive symptoms in North Korean refugees, especially for those with a higher degree of depressive symptom.

Association between delayed recall and T2* relaxation time of the subiculum in adolescents: Implications for ultra‐high‐field magnetic resonance imaging

Jeon, Sehyun,Hwang, Seok‐,Il,Son, Young Don,Kim, Young‐,Bo,Lee, Yu Jin,Kim, Seog Ju FOLIA PUBLISHING SOCIETY 2019 PSYCHIATRY AND CLINICAL NEUROSCIENCES Vol.73 No.6

<P><B>Aim</B></P><P>The aim of this study was to assess neuropsychological correlations with the T2* relaxation time (T2*‐RT) of hippocampal subregions in adolescents using ultra‐high‐field (UHF) 7.0‐T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>We assessed the T2*‐RT of hippocampal subregions in 31 healthy 11th‐ or 12th‐grade high school students using an UHF 7.0‐T MRI system. T2*‐RT of the cornu ammonis (CA) 1, CA2, CA3, and CA4 subregions and the subiculum were calculated for both the left and right hippocampus. Seven subtests of the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery were administered to the subjects to assess visuospatial memory.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>Poor performances in delayed recall in the pattern‐recognition test were significantly correlated with longer T2*‐RT in the bilateral subiculum (right, <I>r</I> = −0.480, <I>P</I> = 0.006; left, <I>r</I> = −0.648, <I>P</I> < 0.001) and the left CA2 (<I>r</I> = −0.480, <I>P</I> = 0.006).</P><P><B>Conclusion</B></P><P>This study showed that longer T2*‐RT in the subiculum were associated with poorer performances in delayed recall in the visual memory tasks. This finding suggests that the subiculum might play a predominant role in delayed recall in adolescents.</P>

      • Exploration of comorbid obsessive-compulsive disorder in patients with bipolar disorder: The clinic-based prevalence rate, symptoms nature and clinical correlates

Jeon, Sehyun,Baek, Ji Hyun,Yang, So Yung,Choi, Yujin,Ahn, Sung Woo,Ha, Kyooseob,Hong, Kyung Sue Elsevier 2018 Journal of affective disorders Vol.225 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P><B>Background</B></P> <P>Comorbidity of bipolar disorder (BD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) has received clinical attention. However, the detailed nature and nolosogic validity of the comorbidity have not been fully explored. This study investigated the comorbidity rate, clinical nature, and correlates of OCD in patients with BD.</P> <P><B>Methods</B></P> <P>Patients (n = 314) with BD were recruited and lifetime clinical characteristics were evaluated comprehensively. The comorbid OCD (‘OCD-BD’) group and the ‘non-OC BD’ group were compared in terms of the clinical variables of BD.</P> <P><B>Results</B></P> <P>OCD was found in 15.9% of patients. Earlier age at onset, more frequent pharmacological (hypo)manic switch and a higher rate of comorbid panic disorder were associated with comorbid OCD. In two-thirds (65.4%) of the OCD-BD subjects, obsessive-compulsive symptoms worsened or were confined to depressive episodes. Contamination obsession and checking compulsion were the most common types of obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Drug-induced (hypo)manic switch was observed in more than 60% of the OCD-BD subjects who were previously exposed to antidepressants. None of the OCD-BD subjects were taking antidepressants for OCD in the current specialty clinics.</P> <P><B>Limitations</B></P> <P>Subject recruitment from specialty clinics, retrospective and cross-sectional evaluation, and difficulties in clarifying the causal relationships.</P> <P><B>Conclusions</B></P> <P>The comorbidity rate of OCD in Korean BD patients was comparable to that of Caucasian patients. Even though OCD seems to be more often linked to depressive episodes, a heterogeneous nosologic relationship including a possibility of drug-mediated induction is suggested.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> In BD, comorbid OCD was associated with earlier onset, and comorbid panic disorder. </LI> <LI> 57.5% of the OCD-BD subjects showed worsening of OC symptoms during depressive episodes. </LI> <LI> Two-thirds of the OCD-BD subjects had experienced drug-induced (hypo)manic switch. </LI> <LI> None of the OCD-BD subjects were taking antidepressants for OCD at the time of study entry. </LI> </UL> </P>

Supplementation of protease and different nutrient density diets in growing-finishing pigs

        Sehyun Park,Ji Hwan Lee,Won Yun,홍석만,오한진,송동철,장세연,Jae Woo An,조현아,Kyeongho Jeon,Jin Ho Cho 한국축산학회 2024 한국축산학회지 Vol.66 No.2

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of protease supplementation and different nutrient density of diets in growing-finishing pigs. A total of one hundred-eight crossbred growing pigs ([Landrace × Yorkshire] × Duroc) with an initial body weight (BW; 18.74 ± 3.46 kg) were used for 15 weeks. Pigs were randomly assigned to six dietary treatments with 6 replicates of 3 pigs per pen in a 3 × 2 factorial through the following arrangement: Three groups of protease (1, Basal diets; 2, Protease A: 125 mg/kg protease derived from Streptomyces sps; 3, Protease B: 100 mg/kg protease derived from Bacillus licheniformis) at two different nutrient density diets (1, Basal requirement; 2, 0.94%–0.98% higher than requirement in dietary protein and 50 kcal/kg in energy). High nutrient (HN) diets showed higher average daily gain (ADG) (p < 0.05) and apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of crude protein (CP) (p < .0001) compared to basal nutrient (BN) diets during growing periods. Supplementation of protease showed higher BW (p < 0.05) and ADG (p < 0.05) compared to non-supplementation of protease during growing periods. Also, supplementation of protease showed higher ATTD of CP (p < 0.01), ATTD of gross energy (p < 0.05) and decreased blood urea nitrogen (BUN) level (p = 0.001) compared to non-supplementation of protease during finishing periods. Pigs which fed the protease showed decreased ammonia (NH3) emissions (p < 0.05) during experiment periods and decreased hydrogen sulfide (H2S) emissions (p < 0.01) during finishing periods. Interactions between nutrient density and protease were observed, which decreased the feed conversion ratio (p < 0.05) in HN diets without protease compared to BN diets without protease during weeks 4 to 6. Also, interaction between nutrient density and protease was observed, which resulted in improved ATTD of CP (p < 0.01) in response to PTA supplementation with HN diets during the finishing period. In conclusion, supplementation of protease reduces NH3 in feces and BUN in whole blood by increasing the digestibility of CP and improves growth performance. Also, diets with high nutrient density improved growth performance and nutrient digestibility in growing periods.

        Jeon, Ye-Jin,Yun, Jin-Mun,Kang, Minji,Lee, Sehyun,Jung, Yen-Sook,Hwang, Kyeongil,Heo, Youn-Jung,Kim, Jueng-Eun,Kang, Rira,Kim, Dong-Yu Elsevier 2018 ORGANIC ELECTRONICS Vol.59 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>A solution-processable hole transporting layer (HTL) is developed using in situ formation of 2D vanadyl phosphate (VP) layered on 2D reduced graphene nanosheet (VP-rGO) for high-efficiency organic solar cells (OSCs). For the reduction of graphene oxide (GO), irradiation with electron beam was used, and for the exfoliation of VP and the blend of VP and rGO, the sonication was used. To investigate the feasibility of VP-rGO, produced by simple method for mass production, as a HTL, the surface, chemical element and electrical properties were carried out and we fabricated organic solar cells (OSCs) based on PTB7-th:PC71BM with VP-rGO as a HTL. The 2D/2D VP-rGO hybrid material specially takes advantage of both high work function of VP and good conductivity of rGO. This result leads to considerable improvement of performance in OSCs based on VP-rGO, compared with OSCs based on the PEDOT:PSS.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> 2D/2D Vanadyl phosphate on reduced graphene oxide via a simple method were prepared. </LI> <LI> The work function of VP-rGO was tuned by the fermi energy pinning of VP and rGO. </LI> <LI> VP-rGO exhibits high work function (from VP) and good conductivity (from rGO). </LI> <LI> By using VP-rGO as a hole transporting layer, PCE of 8.32% was acquired. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

Evolutionary impact of whole genome duplication in Poaceae family

Solji Lee,Sehyun Choi,Donghyun Jeon,강유나,Changsoo Kim 한국작물학회 2020 Journal of crop science and biotechnology Vol.23 No.5

Whole genome duplication (WGD) is a common phenomenon in plants, inducing species diversity, promoting speciation, and playing an important role in providing new genetic material in plant evolution. So far, numerous new gene functions such as pseudogenization, neofunctionalization, and subfunctionalization have evolved through WGD. WGD has occurred several times during the evolution of angiosperms over the past 200 million years. Poaceae, one of the largest plant families in the angiosperms, is considered one of the most economically important and ecologically successful plants, with approximately 600 genera and 10,000 species. Many genetic studies have been conducted on these plants. However, study of the most active phylogeny in the Poaceae family study has not yet been completed. Through comparative studies of major Poaceae groups, this review focuses on the eff ects of genome duplication in the Poaceae family on its evolutionary history and the changes in chromosome numbers.

An intelligent self-adjusting sensor for smart home services based on ZigBee communications

        Jinsung Byun,Boungju Jeon,Junyoung Noh,Youngil Kim,Sehyun Park IEEE 2012 IEEE transactions on consumer electronics Vol.58 No.3

<P>Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have been becoming increasingly essential in recent years because of their ability to manage real-time situational information for various novel services. Recently, the scope of WSN technologies has been expanded to places such as the home, in order to provide the residents with various intelligent services, such as home automation services or home energy management services. However, due to their architectural constraints, such as the trade-off between the performance and cost, WSNs are not effectively implemented in home environments. Therefore, this paper proposes a ZigBee-based intelligent self-adjusting sensor (ZiSAS) in order to address these concerns. This paper presents a situation-based selfadjusting scheme, an event-based self-adjusting sensor network, and hardware and middleware implementation. We also introduce some smart home services using the proposed system. We implemented our system in real test bed and conducted an experiment. Our experiment shows that we reduce the system's energy consumption.</P>
