The microexplosive combustion of a slurry droplet was investigated experimentally. The microexplosion has been approximately considered to be caused by pressure build-up in the shell and to be promoted by heterogeneous nucleation of liquid carrier, which is due to the suppression of evaporation and subsequent superheating of liquid carrier. To closely investigate the pressure build-up and the heterogeneous nucleation, the experiments were conducted in an electric combustor, of which temperature was controllable (400 K-900 K). And the effects of two aligned droplets on the interactive combustion and microexplosion were found in a hot post region of a flat flame burner. Transient internal temperature distributions for slurry droplets were measured. And the shell formation and the microexplosion of suspended A1/JP-8 and Al/n-heptane slurry droplets were examined with various surfactant concentrations (0.5-5 wt%) and solid loadings (10-50 wt.%). The microexplosion time of binary array of droplets was found to be less than that of the isolated droplet due to radiative interaction between droplets.

Background and Objectives:Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma(ATC) is a rare but highly aggressive thyroid ma-lignancy that is associated with an extremely poor survival despite the best multidisciplinary care. BRAF(V600E) mutation is detected in about a quarter of ATC, but unlike its high treatment response to selective BRAF inhibitor (PLX4032) in metastatic melanoma, the treatment response of ATC is reported to be low. The purpose of this study is to investigate the innate resistance mechanism responsible for this low treatment response to BRAF inhibitor and its effect on epithelial-mesenchymal transition(EMT). Materials and Methods:Two ATP cell lines, 8505C and FRO were selected and treated with PLX4032 and its drug sensitivity and effects on cell migration and EMT were examined and compared. Further investigation on the changes in signals responsible for the different treatment response to PLX4032 was carried out and the same ex-periment was performed on both orthotopic and ectopic xenograft mouse models. Results:FRO cell line was more sensitive to PLX4032 treatment compared to 8505C cell line. The resistance to BRAF inhibition in 8505C was due to increased expression of EGFR. Effective inhibition of both EGFR and p-AKT was achieved after dual treatment with BRAF inhibitor(PLX4032) and EGFR inhibitor(Erlotinib). Similar results were confirmed on in vivo study. Conclusion:EGFR-mediated reactivation of the PI3K/AKT pathway and MAPK pathway contributes to the relative insensitivity of BRAF(V600E) mutant ATC cells to PLX4032. Dual inhibition of BRAF and EGFR leads to sustained treatment response including cell invasiveness.

Aims: The purpose of this study was to identify the impact of exogenous SCF and GM-CSF administration after 90% major hepatectomy in rats. Methods: Sprague Dawley rats underwent 90% major hepatectomy using a bile duct-sparing portal pedicle ligation technique under microscopy. The rats were divided into two groups: group 1 (phosphate-buffered saline) and group 2 (SCF+GM-CSF treatment, each 25 mcg/kg). Treatment was administrated immediately after operation through the inferior vena cava. Liver regeneration capacity and expression of cytokines and their downstream signaling molecules were evaluated at postoperative day 1, 2, 4, and 7. Results: The survival rate after 90% hepatectomy in rats using this technique were increased to 95% compared with 55% with conventional parenchymal ligation technique (p = 0.004). The combination effect of SCF and GM-CSF was evaluated in in vitro study. Group 2 exhibited a significantly increased liver regeneration index at early period after hepatectomy compared to group 1 (day 2: 287.5 ± 19.6 vs. 513.9 ± 67.1, p = 0.025 and day 4: 647.6 ± 108.8 vs. 941.7 ± 53.9, p = 0.046). Furthermore, serum liver enzyme levels including total bilirubin, aspartate aminotransferase, and alanine aminotransferase, were significantly lower in group 2 than in group 1 on postoperative days. The expression of Ki-67 and cyclin D1 were significantly higher in group 2 than in group 1 on postoperative days. Group 2 displayed significant increases of interleukin (IL)-6 and transforming growth factor (TGF)-β expression within 24 h after hepatectomy. Especially, C-X-C motif chemokine 12 (CXCL12)/C-X-C chemokine receptor type 4 (CXCR4) and matrix metalloproteinases 2 and 9 levels in the liver tissue of group 2 were also significantly upregulated according to quantitative polymerase chain reaction on postoperative days. Conclusions: Our data suggest that the administration of SCF+GM-CSF after major hepatectomy can enhance liver regeneration by liver cell proliferation and mobilization of stem cell modulating IL-6/TGF- β and CXCL12/CXCR4 pathway as well as by matrix remodeling. These findings suggest the possibility of therapeutic treatment using a combination of SCF and GM-CSF in the clinical setting to promote liver regeneration after extreme hepatectomy.

The microexplosion of a slurry droplet was considered to be caused by the shell formation and the following pressure build-up in the shell which would be promoted by the suppression of evaporation, subsequent superheating and heterogeneous nucleation of liquid carrier. To closely investigate the pressure build-up and the heterogeneous nucleation, a numerical model was introduced by considering the internal temperature distributions with the shell formation, suppression of evaporation and pressure build-up inside. The microexplosion time was estimated by postulating the limit of superheat for heterogeneous nucleation. The simulation yielded a reasonably good agreement with experimental results for Al/n-heptane slurry droplets under various solid loadings.

N/A Objectives : The present study has been undertaken to investigate the effects of and Ginseng Radix Palva on osteoporosis in ovariectomized rats. Methods : In this expaiment, the rats were ovariectomihed. Rats were administered by 2 kinds of medicine, Estradiol and Ginseng Radix Palva. The levels of bone mineral density, osteocalcin, ALP, phosphorus, calcium in serum, deoxypyridinoline in urine, calcium, phosphorus, ash weight of bone, body weight and uterus weight were measured. results : The levels of bone mineral density were not significantly increased in comparison with OVX group in Ginseng Radix Palva group. The levels of serum didn`t show significant change in comparison with OVX group in Ginseng Radix Palva group. The levels of urine deoxypyridinoline didn`t show significant decrease in comparison with OVX group in Ginseng Radix group. The levels of femoral and fibula-tibial ash weight didn`t show significant increase in comparison with OVX group in Ginseng Radix Palva group. The levels of femoral and fibula-tibial calcium showed significant increase in comparison with OVX group in Ginseng Radix Palva group. The levels of femoral and fibula-tibial phosphorus showed significant increase in comparison with OVX group in Ginseng Radix Palva group. The levels of body weight didn`t show significant changes in comparison with OVX group in Ginseng Radix Palva group. The levels of uterus weight didn`t show significant changes in comparison with OVX group in Ginseng Radix Palva group. Conclusions : Reviewing these experimental results, it appears that Ginseng Radix Palva have efficacy on osteoporosis. And further study should be conducted to illustrate in depth the curing osteoporosis.
