Chronic neutrophilic leukemia(CNL) is a very rare myeloproliferative disease, characterized by sustained mature neutrophilic leukocytosis with granulocytic bone marrow infiltration, high NAP(neutrophilic alkaline phosphatase) score and absence of philadelphia chromosome, It is frequently accompanied by hepatosplenomegaly, elevated serum vitamin B_12 and uric acid level. For the diagnosis of CNL, the leukemoid reaction, especially secondary to neoplasia, infection and autoimmune diseases, should be excluded. Since Tuohy's first description in 1920, more than 50 cases fullfilling the above criteria have been reported worldwide, and 4 cases in Korea. Several authors have demonstrated the defect of intracellualr killing in the mature neutrophil and this finding correlates well with the very high incidence of fatal infection, The hemorrhagic diasthesis in CNL is caused by functional abnormality of the platelet. This disease has tendency to transform to blastic crisis and acute leukemia as in other myeloproliferative disease, but characteristically shows frequent coexistence with multiple myeloma. Until now , the therapeutic trials in CNL have been disappointing. Hydroxyrea and busulfan can control hyperleukocytosis. On the basis of functional defect in neutrophil, alpha-2b-interferon has been tried and several reports have demonstrated the clinical and functional effect of interferon on CNL. CNL is very rate hematologic disease and there are few report about general aspect of disorder. We report here a typical CNL case presenting with splenomegaly and leukocytosis with a review of the literature.

The purpose of this study was to determine the changes in body composition, cardiopulmonary function, and flexibility following 8 weeks' bicycle ergometer exercise training. The subjects of this research consisted of healthy adult women between 30 and 40 years of age. Initial intensity of bicycle ergometer exercise was based on the target heart rate equivalent to 55% of maximal oxygen uptake, and intensity of the exercise increased by 5% every 2 weeks. Body composition, cardiopulmonary function at rest and during maximal exercise, as well as flexibility were determined before and after 8 weeks of bicycle ergometer exercise training. Masimal exercise was performed on the treadmill according to Bruce Protocol. The results obtained were as follows; 1. There were o changes in body weight, percent body fat, fat body weight, and lean body weight as well. The ventilation volume for 1 minute, respiratory quotient and expired CO₂ volume have not changed significantly after the training, either. 2. As a result of training, resting systolic and diastolic blood pressure decreased significantly(p<.05) 3. Maximal heart rate, maximal oxygen consumption and maximal running time increased significantly after the training(p<.05) 4. Pelvic flexibility increased slightly after the training, however, it did not reach the statistical significance. Trunk flexion forward increased significantly after the training(p<.05). From these results, it may be concluded that 8 weeks bicycle ergometr training improve the cardiopulmonary function and flexibility in healthy adult women between 30-40 years of age.

<P>Abstract</P><P>Purpose: </P><P><SMALL>L</SMALL>-ascorbic acid (LAA) modifies the <I>in vitro</I> growth of leukemic cells from ∼50% of patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) or myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). To test the hypothesis that depletion of LAA, alternating with supplementation to prevent scurvy, would provide therapeutic benefit, a single-arm pilot trial was conducted (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT00329498).</P><P>Experimental results: </P><P>During depletion phase, patients with refractory AML or MDS were placed on a diet deficient in LAA; during supplementation phase, patients received daily intravenous administration of LAA. An <I>in vitro</I> assay was performed pretherapy for LAA sensitivity of leukemic cells from individual patients.</P><P>Results: </P><P>Of 18 patients enrolled, eight of 16 evaluable patients demonstrated a clinical response. Responses were obtained during depletion (four patients) as well as during supplementation (five patients) but at a pharmacologic plasma level achievable only with intravenous administration. Of nine patients for whom the <I>in vitro</I> assay indicated their leukemic cells were sensitive to LAA, seven exhibited a clinical response; compared with none of six patients who were insensitive to LAA.</P><P>Conclusions: </P><P>The clinical benefit, along with a conspicuous absence of significant adverse events, suggests that further testing of LAA depletion alternating with pharmacologic dose intravenous supplementation in patients with these and other malignancies is warranted.</P>

<P>In the present study, an edible corm of the plant Colocasia esculenta, commonly known as Taro was extracted with cold water (4C). Finally, 10.44 g (1.04%) of the crude polysaccharide (Taro-0) was obtained from Taro. The purified active compound (Taro-4-I) was isolated using DEAE-Sepharose FF and Sephadex G-100. The anti-complementary activity of Taro-4-I (57.34.5%) was similar to that of polysaccharide K (used as the positive control). The molecular weight of Taro-4-I was 200 kDa and it was a polysaccharide composed of 64.4% neutral sugars and 35.6% uronic acid. Taro-4-I activated the complement system through the classical and alternative pathways. The treatment of peritoneal macrophages with Taro-4-I significantly increased the production of interleukin (IL)-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in a dose-dependent manner. However, IL-12 production showed maximal activity at 56 ?g/ml and subsequently decreased. Splenocytes obtained from mice which were administered Taro-4-I intravenously showed a higher toxicity to Yac-1 cells compared to those obtained from untreated mice in a effector?to?target (E/T) ratio-dependent manner. The group treated with 50 ?g/ml Taro-4-I showed a significantly increased toxicity to Yac-1 cells compared to the group treated with 500 ?g/ml Taro-4-I. The administration of Taro-4-I significantly inhibited the lung metastasis of B16BL6 melanoma cells. However, the group treated with 50 ?g/mouse Taro-4-I had a significantly lower number of tumors compared to the group injected with 500 ?g/mouse Taro-4-I.</P>
Relationships between Ovulation and Fertilization Rate in Different Species of Pigs

The aim of the present study was to investigate the ovulation rate and its relationship to fertilization ability in Landrace, Durock and Crossbred pigs. Gilts were natural mated at a body weight of at least 120 kg under the same hormone treatment. Embryos were surgically collected 1 day after natural mating (Day 0). Embryos derived from in vivo-fertilized oocytes were cultured in medium PZM-3. The ovaries were examined and the pathological findings were recorded. The number of corpus hemorrhagicum was counted, and was assumed to equal the ovulation rate. There was no difference in the number of corpus hemorrhagicum (20.4, 28.8 and 23.2) and ovulation (13.5, 26.8 and 17.2) in the Landrace, Durock and Crossbred pigs. The two pronucleus formation was 76.0, 80.0 and 86.9%. The Day-7 embryos had blastocyst rates of 68.0, 75.0 and 73.9%. There was no difference in the number of total cells and apoptotic cells. In the future, more studies require determining relationships between ovulation and fertilization rate in different species of pigs.
