• Impact of Interferon-Based Treatment on Quality of Life and Work Related Productivity from the Korean Cohort in the MOSAIC Study

( Sang Hoon Ahn ),( Won Hyeok Choe ),( Yoon Jun Kim ),( Jeong Heo ),( Dorota Latarska-smuga ),( Jiho Kang ),( Seung Woon Paik ) 대한간학회 2017 춘·추계 학술대회 (KASL) Vol.2017 No.1

Aims: Chronic Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) infection increases the risk for progressive liver disease, hepatocellular carcinoma and negatively impacts the patient’s quality of life. HCV treatment is evolving with direct acting antivirals but IFN based therapy has been the standard of care for many years and remains available in some countries. The MOSAIC study aims to characterize patients with chronic HCV infection and assess the impact of IFN-containing treatment on health-related quality of life, work related productivity and health care utilization. Methods: MOSAIC is an international prospective multicenter observational study that has been conducted in 20 countries. Consecutive patients with chronic HCV infection were enrolled and those who initiated an IFN based regimen were prospectively followed for 48 weeks. We report results from the Korean cohort Results: 100 patients were enrolled: 86 were treatment naïve and 14 were treatment experienced. 33 patients initiated an IFN based regimen: 6 patients started IFN + RBV, 26 patients started Peg-IFN + RBV, none started Peg-IFN + RBV + DAA and 1 patient received other treatment. Among the treated cohort, demographic and disease characteristics were the following: the mean age was 54.5 years; 14 patients were male. 14 had minimal or no fibrosis, 2 portal fibrosis, 3 bridging fibrosis and 6 patients suffered from cirrhosis. HCV Genotype distribution was as follows: genotype 1: 11; genotype 2: 19 and genotype 3: 3. Table 1 describes the results at baseline and changes over 4, 12 and 48 weeks and end-of-treatment (EOT) for the quality of life and work productivity outcome measures (EQ-5D-5L, HCV-PRO and WPAI). Conclusions: Results from the Korean cohort of the MOSAIC study show a moderate trend for deterioration of health-related quality of life and work productivity associated with IFN based treatment for patients with chronic HCV infection during treatment period. • 열 전처리에 의한 섬유소분해효소생산 미생물의 선발

        정허진,김훈,김정호 順天大學校 1996 論文集 Vol.15 No.1

Three microorganisms producing carboxymethyl-cellulase (CMCase) were isolated from 30 soil and compost samples. CMCase activity, on plates containing CMC, of the two isolates, H12 and H15, screened by heat-pretreatment procedure, was higher than that of N01, the one screened by nonheat-treatment procedure. H12 and H15 were able to grow and produce the enzyme well at 37 and 42℃ in liquid culture media. N01 did not grow well at 37℃ but could grow moderately at a little higher temperature, 42℃. However, N01 did not produce CMCase in liquid culture media at 42℃. For H12 and H15, addition of CMC to the media did not increase the production of CMCase at all. All of the three isolates produced at least about 2 times higher CMCase activity in TSB medium than in LB medium. From these results, it is suggested that heat-pretreatment of samples can provide a better way of screening CMCase producing strains.

      • Bone marrow cell-mediated production of transgenic chickens

Heo, Young Tae,Lee, Sung Ho,Yang, Ji Hoon,Kim, Teoan,Lee, Hoon Taek Nature Publishing Group 2011 Laboratory investigation Vol.91 No.8

The transplantation of adult stem cells into recipients is a method used widely in mammals to determine the fate of transferred cells, and for the production of progenies. This study is the first report, to our knowledge, to demonstrate the successful production of chickens using cells transdifferentiated from adult chicken bone marrow cells (BMCs) transplanted into the testes. BMCs from the enhanced green fluorescent protein (eGFP) transgenic (Tg) chickens were induced via in vitro transdifferentiation to male germ cells and injected into the testes of normal recipients. The multipotency of BMC was found with RT–PCR, immunocytochemistry, and FACS using specific markers, such as OCT4 and SSEA-1, -3, and -4. Localization and in vivo transdifferentiation of injected cells in the seminiferous tubules of recipients were traced for up to 40 days' post-injection by GFP expression and immunocytochemical analyses. The integration of the eGFP and the neoR genes in sperm gDNAs of recipient was confirmed via PCR analysis. A subsequent testcross of the recipient roosters with non-Tg hens resulted in the production of eGFP Tg progenies, demonstrating the successful transdifferentiation of the adult BMC to the germ cells in the testis. Therefore, we suggest that the use of adult BMCs is a new and promising approach to the production of Tg poultry, and may prove helpful in the study of avian developmental biology.

The Feasibility Study on a High-Temperature Application of the Magnetostrictive Transducer Employing a Thin Fe-Co Alloy Patch

        Heo, Tae-Hoon,Park, Jae-Ha,Ahn, Bong-Young,Cho, Seung-Hyun The Korean Society for Nondestructive Testing 2011 한국비파괴검사학회지 Vol.31 No.3

The on-line monitoring for the wall thinning in secondary system has been considered one of main issues for the safety of nuclear power plants. To establish the on-line monitoring technique for the pipe wall thinning, the development of the ultrasonic transducer working in high-temperature is very important. In this investigation, the magnetostrictive transducer is concerned for high temperature condition up to $300^{\circ}C$. The magnetostrictive transducer has many advantages such as high working temperature, durability, cost-effectiveness, and shear waves, most of all. A thin Fe-Co alloy patch whose Curie temperature is over $900^{\circ}C$ was employed as a ferromagnetic material for magnetostriction. Wave transduction experiments in various temperature were carried out and the effect of bias magnets was considered together with the dry coupling performance of the transducer. From experimental results, consequently, it was found that the magnetostrictive transducer works stable even in high temperature up to $300^{\circ}C$ and can be a promising method for the on-line monitoring of the wall thinning in nuclear power plants.

      • CONTINUOUS SENSORY ELECTRICAL STIMULATION FOR THE SUPPRESSION OF PARKINSONIAN REST TREMOR

HEO, JAE-HOON,JEON, HYEONG-MIN,CHOI, EUI-BUM,KWON, DO-YOUNG,EOM, GWANG-MOON World Scientific Publishing Company 2018 JOURNAL OF MECHANICS IN MEDICINE AND BIOLOGY Vol.18 No.7

This paper aims to investigate the effect of continuous sensory electrical stimulation (SES) on the suppression of a Parkinsonian rest tremor. Fourteen patients with Parkinson’s disease participated in this study. Three wrist muscles were electrically stimulated on sensory level under motor threshold. Intensity of stimulation was determined for each muscle of each patient as the maximum tolerable current amplitude that does not induce muscle contraction. Tri-axial gyro sensors were attached to three upper limb segments. The angular velocity of each segment was measured for each of the three sessions, i.e., PRE-, ON- and POST- stimulations. Outcome measures were the tremor amplitude and main frequency of each axis in the power spectrum. Decrease in tremor amplitude was significant at ON and POST sessions in finger and at POST session in hand and forearm. Decrease in main frequency was significant mainly at ON session. About one-third of patients showed reduction in tremor power at ON-stimulation and at POST-stimulation. Subjects with suppression of tremor showed greater initial tremor amplitude than those without suppression. Continuous SES suppressed the Parkinsonian rest tremor. The results suggest that the properties of tremor-generating loop may be altered by continuous SES and the effect lasts temporarily.

        X-Band Amplifier for the PAL-XFEL

        Hoon Heo,Jinyul Hu,Heung-Soo Lee,Heung-Sik Kang,Su Hyun Lee,Jin Ho Chang,Dong Heon Lee 한국물리학회 2020 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.76 No.7

Recent X-ray free electron lasers based on a high-energy high-current linear accelerator, such as the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory (PAL-XFEL) uses a third harmonic radio-frequency (RF) linearizer system to improve the laser's longitudinal beam quality. Because the X-ray free electron laser at the PAL-XFEL uses 2856 MHz RF accelerators, we realized a RF linearizer of 11.424 GHz which afforded a 50 MW RF power by using a SLAC X-band klystron. Operation of the X-band klystron required an X-band amplifier with a 1 kW level at the specified frequency of 11.424 GHz. We tested two types of X-band amplifier, a traveling wave tube amplifier and a solid state amplifier. In this work, we present the test results and discuss the features, especially focusing on the X-band solid state amplifier.

      • Sensory electrical stimulation for suppression of postural tremor in patients with essential tremor.

        Heo, Jae-Hoon,Kim, Ji-Won,Kwon, Yuri,Lee, Sang-Ki,Eom, Gwang-Moon,Kwon, Do-Young,Lee, Chan-Nyeong,Park, Kun-Woo,Manto, Mario Pergamon Press 2015 Bio-medical materials and engineering Vol.26 No.1

Essential tremor is an involuntary trembling of body limbs in people without tremor-related disease. In previous study, suppression of tremor by sensory electrical stimulation was confirmed on the index finger. This study investigates the effect of sensory stimulation on multiple segments and joints of the upper limb. It denotes the observation regarding the effect's continuity after halting the stimulation. 18 patients with essential tremor (8 men and 10 women) participated in this study. The task, 'arms stretched forward', was performed and sensory electrical stimulation was applied on four muscles of the upper limb (Flexor Carpi Radialis, Extensor Carpi Radialis, Biceps Brachii, and Triceps Brachii) for 15 seconds. Three 3-D gyro sensors were used to measure the angular velocities of segments (finger, hand, and forearm) and joints (metacarpophalangeal and wrist joints) for three phases of pre-stimulation (Pre), during-stimulation (On), and 5 minute post-stimulation (P5). Three characteristic variables of root-mean-squared angular velocity, peak power, and peak power frequency were derived from the vector sum of the sensor signals. At On phase, RMS velocity was reduced from Pre in all segments and joints while peak power was reduced from Pre in all segments and joints except for forearm segment. Sensory stimulation showed no effect on peak power frequency. All variables at P5 were similar to those at On at all segments and joints. The decrease of peak power of the index finger was noted by 90% during stimulation from that of On phase, which was maintained even after 5 min. The results indicate that sensory stimulation may be an effective clinical method to treat the essential tremor.

Relation Between the Repulsive Interaction and the Overlap of the Electron Densities$^\dag$

Heo, Hoon,Shin, Kook-Joe,Kim, Yung-Sik Korean Chemical Society 1989 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.10 No.3

The relations between the repulsive interactions and the electron density overlaps are investigated for various closed shell-closed shell pairs, including the systems containing alkali and halide ions. It is found that the repulsive interaction($V_{rep}$) depends on the overlap of the electron density($S_{\rho}$) according to a simple exponential relation, $V_{rep}$ = $As_{\rho}\;^{\alpha}$. Furthermore, for most of the closed shell systems the $\alpha$ values are near unity and the A values do not vary much. The same tests are also performed for the open shell-closed shell, and the open shell-open shell pairs. Although the results for these systems also show exponential dependences of the repulsive interactions on the density overlaps, the details of the dependence differ greatly from those for the closed shell systems and also vary widely from one individual system to another.
