        Mentoring New English Writing Teachers: Advice from Experienced Teachers

        Many instructors new to teaching English composition at the college level feel frustrated with what to teach and how to teach it. To learn about the context of support for these instructors, this small scale pilot study asked current ESL composition instructors in a large Midwestern research university to respond to a questionnaire aimed at revealing how experienced teachers give advice to new teachers. The participants included 16 experienced English composition instructors— eight teachers with five or fewer years of teaching experience and eight teachers with more than five years of experience. From each open-ended question response, emerging themes were coded and counted; additional data were qualitatively analyzed. Results showed that no differences in the number of themes per response were found between the two groups; however, similarities and differences regarding the orientation and content of advice given were found. Based on what was learned from this study, the researcher discusses how experienced teachers can better mentor new L2 composition teachers.

        Sink or Swim? L2 Writers’ Challenges and Strategic Agency: Looking into the Differences Between L1 and L2 Writers

        A number of previous studies have explored L2 writers’ challenges in their writing practices through the investigation of differences between L1 and L2 writing. To contribute to the scholarship on this comparison, the present study scrutinizes secondary L2 writers’ challenges and strategies by looking into the differences between L1 and L2 writers. The researcher adopts the qualitative approach of a case study exploring the thoughts of two teachers who teach English to both L1 and L2 writers in a junior high school in the U.S. The findings indicate that, from the teachers’ perspectives, the L1 and L2 students exhibit a number of observable differences in their writing and that the L2 writers go through challenges but make every effort to survive in the second language environment. Additionally, various contextual factors of the L2 students create not only distinctions between L1 and L2 writing but also differences across L2 writers’ writing. Finally, these findings hold important pedagogical implications by helping composition instructors better understand L2 writers’ writing and develop effective strategies for dealing with their challenges at the secondary and, further, college levels.

        상급종합병원 간호사의 비판적 사고성향과 임상의사결정능력이 투약안전역량에 미치는 영향

        This study was attempted to help senior general hospital nurses to improve their medication safety capability by identifying the level of medication safety competency of nurses in senior hospitals and how critical thinking tendencies and clinical decision-making ability affect medication safety competencies. The study conducted frequency analysis, correlation analysis, and stepwise multiple regression analysis using SPSS/WIN 25.0 program on questionnaires distributed 216 nurses working in tertiary hospitals. The results showed that medication safety competency and predictors, there was a significant correlation with critical thinking disposition (r=.52, p<.001) and clinical decision-making ability (r=.60, p<.001). Furthermore, medication safety competence of nurses in tertiary hospitals were clinical thinking (β=.746, p<.01) and clinical decision-making ability (β=.379, p<.001). The explanatory power was 41.0%. Based on result of the study, systemic and intergrated education to prepare alternative to increase the medication safety competency of nurses in tertiary hospitals according to the working department. 본 연구는 상급종합병원 간호사를 대상으로 간호사의 비판적 사고성향, 임상의사결정능력이 투약안전약량에 미치는 요인을 규명하기 위한 서술적 조사연구이다. 본 연구는 300병상 이상의 상급종합병원 6개 의료기관에 근무하는 간호사 216명의 설문지를 SPSS 25.0 프로그램을 이용하여 빈도분석, 상관관계분석, 다중회귀분석을 실시하였다. 그 결과, 상급종합병원 간호사의 투약안전역량에 가장 주요한 예측 요인은 임상의사결정능력(β=.28, p<.001)이었고, 다음으로 비판적 사고성향(β=.45, p<.001), 근무부서(β=-.11, p<.05)의 순으로 나타났으며, 이들 변수의 설명력은 41.0%이었다(F=51.25, p<.001). 본 연구결과를 근거로 병원 내 간호사의 투약안전역량 향상을 위해서는 간호사의 임상의사결정능력과 비판적 사고성향 및 직무관련 특성 중요성 인식과 직무 관련특성을 고려한 투약안전역량 증진에 대한 지속적인 교육 및 훈련이 병원 차원의 방안이 필요하다.

        Poetry as a Venue for Meaningful Literacy: A Case Study of a Primary English Language Learner

        In order to humanize and contextualize ESL/EFL learning, poetry writing has been suggested and considered as an effective strategy for meaningful literacy. However, there is a lack of empirical evidence for the pedagogical significance of poetry writing on language learning. To make up for the dearth of research about poetry writing, the present study explored to what extent a primary English language learner can express herself through poetry writing in an American classroom and the significance of poetry writing as meaningful literacy in ESL/EFL learning. Adopting a qualitative research approach, this small-scale case study conducted textual analyses of a young English language learner’s poetry works and in-depth interviews with her. Findings suggest that poetry writing encouraged the participant learner to express herself with her own voice, enhanced her L2 linguistic awareness, provided meaningful learning opportunities―authorship and readership―, and motivated the learner to overcome challenges as an English language learner. The present study contributes to the understanding of young English language learners’ poetry writing in the field.

        “I’m So Excited About My Own Space for English”: A Web-portfolio Project in a College English Writing Class

        Although a number of studies have advocated for a portfolio approach to teaching/learning writing, they have largely addressed the advantages and disadvantages of portfolio implementation as summative assessment. Focusing on the formative function of writing portfolios, the present study investigated how and why L2 writers are engaged in writing for their Web-portfolios in English and, further, strategies for better motivating students during Web-portfolio creation. I collected data from students’ detailed accounts throughout the process (i.e., through peer reviews and self-assessments) and post-process (i.e., through surveys and self-reflections) of building Web-portfolios. The findings suggest that the L2 writers greatly engaged in English writing for their Web-portfolios while learning from each other and realizing their own strengths and weakness and that the sense of ownership, authorship, and scholarship and the autonomy given to them prompted the L2 writers to write eagerly for their Web-portfolios. Based on these findings, strategies for better motivating L2 writers during Web-portfolio creation are suggested; that is, I recommend that L2 writers should be given clear expectations and guidelines with a margin for creating Web-portfolios and that they should be allowed to choose their favorite topic to write about and to research.

        폐기물 매립지 바닥층의 고화토 포설시 동결/융해 현상에 관한 연구

        본 연구에서는 바닥층을 점토포설의 대안으로 기존의 원지반 해성점토에 시멘트와 벤토나이트 및 고화재를 혼합한 새로운 고화처리토를 이용하여 안전하고 경제적이며 효율적인 매립지 바닥층을 조성하고자 한다. 그러나 매립지 바닥층의 시공에 있어서 고화처리토를 이용한 표층고화 처리층을 바닥층의 재료로서 사용하는데 토목역학적인 안전성에 대한 기술적 자료가 전무한 실정이다. 특히 고화처리토를 포설한 후 겨울철 동상에 대한 연구문헌 및 사례는 국내, 외를 막론하고 쉽게 찾아볼 수 없었다. 따라서 본 조사연구를 통하여 기초적인 자료를 수집하고 겨울철 조건하에 고화처리층의 동결/융해 현상에 대한 바닥층의 안전성 및 동상현상을 검토하여 설계 및 시공에 반영될 수 있도록 하였다.$^4),6),21),25)$ 또한 본 연구에서는 폐기물매립지 바닥층의 포설에 가장 중요한 실패 원인중 하나인 동절기에 동상에 따른 고화처리층의 동결/융해 현상에 대한 연구를 실시하여 향후 해안폐기물매립지 건설에 기술적으로 이바지 하고자 한다. 고화처리층은 지지력을 목적으로 하는45 cm의 고화토층과 차수를 목적으로 하는30 cm의 불투수층의 $P_A와\; P_B$층으로 구성되었으며 고화처리층 하부에는 30 cm의 지하수 배제층, 상부에는 60 cm의 침출수 집배수층으로 설계되었다. 결과적으로 동결깊이는 동일한 조건에서 인공강우를 고려한 실험에서 동결깊이가 증가하였으며 동상현상은 수mm정도 증가하였고 국부적으로 표면균열이 발생하였다. 이러한 결과로 볼 때 매립지 바닥층의 설계에서 고화처리토를 사용한 바닥층이 점토층으로 구성된 설계보다 더욱 신뢰할 수 있다고 생각할 수 있다. (이송 외 2인, 1999; 이송 외 3인, 1999)e experimental group who was exposed to the A-V media produced by the author showed the higher score of androgyny sexual role identity than the control group who didn′t watch the A-V program. 2) The experimental group showed the higher rate of the androgyny than the control group, On the other hand, their rate of the masculinity turned out to be lower than the latter group. 3) The experimental group didn′t show the difference of SAS score from the control group .In conclusion, "Our sexuality is Healthful" A-V program for sexual education brought about the significant change of sexual role identity of the middle school boys, but didn′t affect their attitude toward sexual activity.ypothesis 4: The 4th hypothesis that "There will be significant difference of the pulse rate just before surgery in the experimental group and control group"was supported(P= .004). The purpose of this research is to complement the existing researches on landfill bottom liners behavior during the periods of freeze and thaw. Landfill-related researches have been typically focused on small-scale soil samples that are often compacted under conditions different from those used in the field. Although these tests have been invaluable in clarifying the problem of freeze and thaw, extending the results of such experimental studies to prototype landfills are questionable. In this investigation, the author utilized a large scale laboratory simulation allowing inclusion of the field depth of the cover systems, layered soil profiles, rainfall simulation, a cold climate and boundary conditions similar to those encountered in the landfill. The soil materials were stabilized soils (mixed clays, cements, and minerals) instead of clays. The bottom liners are made up of drainage layer (30 cm), stabilized layer (75 cm), and leach collection layer (60 cm). The stabilized layers are made up of supporting layer (45 cm) and low permeable layer (30 cm) - consisting of $P_A\; and\; P_B$ layer. As a results, depths of penetration increased by about 2~5 more centimeters at rainfall simulated designs than those at no rainfall simulated designs (that is design 3, design 5 and design 7) - it increased by about 20mm/day in the bottom liners and frost heaves also increased it by a few millimeters. Also, a few cracks appeared partly. According to these results, we can surmise that the compacted stabilized soil is more reliable than the compacted clay liners for construction of the landfill liners.
