Vol.11 No.1

This study aimed to investigate the effects of Chaihushugansan and Chaihuyigantang on the change of monoamine-contents in the hypothalamus of mice induced by the immobilization stress. Each formula(1.0g/kg) was injected intragastrically to mice 1 hour prior to the immobilzation stress(15 minutes) before measuring the change of monoamine-contents level in mice hypothalamus. The results were as follows: 1. DA content at control group showed significant change. CHSGS group and CHYGT group showed significant decrease.(P<0.05) 2. NE content of the control group was increased than normal group. NE content of the CHYGT group was shown a significant decrease than control group.(P<0.05) 3. DOPAC contents didn't show significant changes at any groups. 4. 5-HT contents didn't show significant changes at any groups. 5. 5-HIAA contents at CHSGS group and CHYGT group showed signifiant changes.(P<0.05, 0.01) These data revealed that chaihushugansan and chaihuyigantang might have the anti-stress effect through the control of DA and NE contents in the hypothalamus.

        Type I Atelocollagen

Vol.17 No.4

To utilize collagen as an implantable biomateriall the mcct widely used bovine skin origin Type I collagen was investigated Pepsin treated, Type I atelocollagen was extracted and crosslinked by the ultraviolet(W) ray with wavelength of 254nm or by various concentrations of glutaraldehyde to produce collagen membranes. The crosslink rates of the specimens were observed by a polarized light microscope, a scanning electron microscope, and a Fourier transform infrared (FT-lR) spectrometer. The followings are concluded 1. The collagen membranes produced by both 2.5% glutaraldehyde solution and 254nm UV ray irra- diation demonstrated similar morphologies on polarized light microscopic and scanning electron microscopic views. 2. The chemical structures of the crosslinked membranes by glutaraldehyde over 2.5% in concentrations revealed similar intensities to that of the UV ray irradiated one in FT-lR investigation. 3. To obtain optimal croulink in bovine stalin origin Type I atelocollagen, 2.5% glutaraldehyde solution or UV ray irradiation with 254nm wavelength is acceptable.

Vol.12 No.1

While Beulah has been viewed as a conservative domestic novel supporting the dominant ideological ideal, "True Woman," Nina Baym reinterprets this book as a fairly radical one manifesting women`s "absolute autonomy" and "intense individualism" by highlighting Beulah`s unprecedented intensive desire for independence. This new perspective justly illuminates the precursory aspect of the novel: women`s not surrendering to men`s `amorous` will by maintaining mental autonomy. This radical view, however, seems to let go unnoticed the ironic fact that admitting quite a progressive female will helps prop up the male-centered society: the South. The South in 1859 when this book was published was about to see the climactic event, the Civil War, of North-South conflicts which had been seriously aggravating since the Compromise of 1850. Not getting upper hand in the life and death confrontation, the privileged class of the South felt deeply threatened by a series of Northern policies regarding slavery, trade and so forth. When uniting with Beulah, Guy Hartwell, unlike Rochester in Jane Eyre or Desmond in The Morgesons, not only remains intact, physically and socially but becomes more economically prosperous, while showing no ameliorative change in his understanding and attitude toward Beulah. The author doesn`t want to get the man in an overwhelmingly superior position (to the woman) impaired in any sense because the prosperity of the white male plantation owners is essential to the continuation of the South in crisis. Then what makes their `happy` union possible is not the man`s change or advanced mutual understanding on both parties but the woman`s intense individualism. More exactly, defining Beulah`s resistance to Guy`s tyrannical `love` as an uncompromising individualism, or a deviation to be repented of renders this romance a story about the woman`s repentance and transition from economical to spiritual independence. Thus the man does not need to be damaged or changed anyhow. Unprecedentedly radical female character is a double-edged sword designed to promote women`s position and keep the patriarchal, racial-discriminating society intact at the same time. In a word, it holds a signature of, as I call it, Southern White Female Project. What transcends this novel beyond its Southern locality lies not so much in the radical female figure itself as in the unhappy combination of `unchanged man` and `strong woman who fights for her mental autonomy.` Apart from Southern political interest, the postbellum novels such as The Story of Avis, The Portrait of a Lady, The Awakening, reinstate these two factors and show how tragically their mixture comes to an end.

Vol.55 No.2

The aim of this study is analysing the understanding of transitive phrasal verbs and type 1 prepositional verbs of Korean university EFL learners. For this purpose, this study investigated how learners actually employ them in their written texts and how often they incorrectly use them. In the level of frequency, leaners used type 1 prepositional verbs more frequently than transitive phrasal verbs, which means they are less familiar with the semantic and syntactic characteristics of transitive phrasal verbs. However, learners produced type 1 prepositional verbs as well as transitive phrasal verbs incorrectly. The results showed that the particle omission category had the highest percentage of errors found, followed by the collocation error category for both. The findings support the conclusion of researches that EFL learners have difficulties in understanding and using multi-word verbs. It thus seems necessary for teachers to design more effective ways to draw learners’ attention to the multi-word verbs and help learners develop them.

Vol.40 No.3

The purpose of this study is to present a new interpretation of Descartes’ philosophy as one of the educational theories. The main reason for this approach is that if we reveal the educational aspects of Descartes’ philosophy, we can answer the following question: ‘How can we solve the problem of the modern split self?’ In this regard, there are two problems of dualism. The first is ‘The distinction between mind and body’ on the inner-side of the self, and the second is ‘The discrepancy between subjectivity of mind and objectivity of world’ on the outer-side of the self. What this study says is that two problems of disharmony on Descartes’ philosophy could be solved by interpreting his philosophy from the perspective of education. Therefore, an effort to try to read Descartes’ philosophy as an educational theory is required. As mentioned above, educational implications could be found in Descartes’ Philosophy. They are as follows. First, the First philosophy, which provides the foundation of philosophy, can be considered as the principle of education. The First philosophy is on the basis of both ‘The method and doubt’ and ‘Proofs of God's existence’, which respectively establish ‘The principle of cognition’ and ‘The principle of being’. The first philosophy sets up ‘The transcendental self’ which indicates an educated person and lets that person accept ‘The passions of the souls’ positively, so the educated person is able to enjoy freedom. Second, ‘Natural philosophy’ and ‘Moral philosophy’ can be understood as ‘the content of education’. With regard to the metaphor of a tree in Descartes’ philosophical system, trunks and branches each refer to Natural philosophy and Moral philosophy. The object of ‘Natural philosophy’ is Nature, and ‘Natural philosophy’ enables us to acquire self-knowledge by theoretical activities. Also, the object of ‘Moral philosophy’ is Passions, and Moral philosophy enables us to acquire self-knowledge by practical activities. Third, the ultimate goal of education should be identified as self-knowledge, and the aspect of self-knowledge can be found on Descartes’ philosophy. Self-knowledge is able to make people contemplate their lives comprehensively and thoroughly, and it will provide clues to interpret Descartes’ philosophy as an educational theory.

Vol.89 No.-

This study investigated how Voice Thread can influence EFL learner writing by providing collaborative activities through which learners actively participated in a feedback exchange. The activity described in this paper is creating two audio books on Voice Thread during the semester. Seventy Korean and Taiwan college students participated in this activity. During the activity, the students collaborated in constructing and negotiating meaning. The results show that any types of feedback (teachers vs peers; forms vs contents) have an effect on Korean and Taiwan college students writing revisions. Analysis of a posttest questionnaire also reveals that students were generally motivated throughout the task, using a relatively new technology, Voice Thread, and a well-designed online collaborative task can facilitate interaction in the target language.

Vol.9 No.-

This paper proposes to read Poe`s "Ligeia" as the white writer`s profound self-criticism of White Supremacy, which can be translated into Texas Annexation and Mexican War in the nineteenth century, and Iraqi War in the twenty-first century. The essence of this writer`s criticism lies not so much in what cruel and unjust treatment white people provide for other less-privileged races as in what horrible and self-destroying malaise they breed inside their society and their minds. This perspective inspires us to see Ligeia, the seemingly exotic lady, as an American woman who suffers from the powerful, fatal influence of True Womanhood. In the nineteenth-century America, "American true women"-guardian angels of their home, community and country-primarily functioned as "hard" evidence of the white supremacy. With his overt, excessive admiration and worship for his wife, the narrator, Ligeia`s husband, covertly fulfills the male-centered urge to metamorphose a living woman into an angel, thereby embodies the imperialistic urge. What creates Ligeia`s "fearful" return from death is not her fierce, fearful will of revenge, but her husband`s tremendous, obsessive desire for an immortal, disembodied woman. His burning aspiration for the overwhelming triumph of spirituality over body spawns the delusional return of the deceased. It is he, not she, that is the incarnation of pure mentality. His success of deflecting the stigma of incarnation of pure mentality from himself to Ligeia, helped by his elusive consciousness and narration, might be another triumph he achieves; however, this hideous triumph only testifies to his deeply-embedded antagonism to life, and ultimately, the un-superiority of white supremacy.
