        Using TED in the Undergraduate Interpreting Classroom to Enhance Listening Competence

        Recently, an increasing number of colleges have adopted translation & interpretation classes. The objective of these classes at the undergraduate level is not necessarily to enhance students’ interpreting skills but to promote their English competence. Within this context, this paper suggests methods used in the interpreting classroom as a means to raise students’ English, in particular, listening competence. Given the current students’ familiarity with multimedia texts, they are an excellent means in promoting students’ interest and enthusiasm to this end. TED talks are employed in this paper to illustrate how interpreting classes using multimedia texts can raise students’ active listening. The merits of TED talks for English-Korean interpreting classes are discussed in terms of active understanding of source texts. The talks are conducive to the exercises since they cover a variety of topics, provide both oral and written texts, are not read out, and have a clear message and structure. In-depth interviews were conducted after two semesters of interpreting classes to get feedback from the students. The interviews revealed that students felt interpreting classes helped them heighten their listening competence and that overall they liked using multimedia texts in class. The results of the interviews are discussed along with some examples from the classes.

        영한 번역그림책의 가화성 향상 제안

        The present study observes speakability in English-Korean picture booktranslation. Speakability is defined as the capacity to arouse rhythm forreading-aloud of picture books. There has not been much research intospeakability to date, perhaps due to its nature refusing to be easilydefined. Nevertheless, it is an essential element in picture books asyoung children learn language first through listening rather thanreading, and enjoyable book-reading experience will ultimately leadthem to become life-long readers. As each language has its own language resources for speakability, Korean translations of English picture books are expected to employ itsown devices for speakability. This study looks into three English booksof the same author and their translations to observe how thetranslations enhance speakability, and suggests some strategies toincrease speakability in translations. It is hoped that this study can laythe basis for further research into speakability in picture books.

        From Translation Studies to Korean Studies through a Paratextual Analysis of Bandi’s Kobal

        This study explores paratextual transformations in the translation of Kobal 고발 by the North Korean writer Bandi (Pandi 반디) in terms of intralingual, interlingual, and intersemiotic translation. The manuscript was originally smuggled out of North Korea and published in South Korea by a right-wing publisher as a book on anti-communism. It has since been translated in 28 countries, gaining worldwide attention and winning the English PEN award. It was also republished in South Korea, with a focus on human rights through paratextual transformation. Paratexts act as powerful packaging instruments largely influenced by socio-cultural context. As a publication written by a North Korean writer, the paratexts in translations of Kobal are directly related to how the receiving country sees South and North Korea. We examine six translations in different languages centering on the paratextual changes, including the title, cover image, prefatorial material, and epitext to explore the perspectives inherent in them and the ways they interact with each other. This analysis of paratextual shifts involves not only translators, publishers, and editors, but also a much wider variety of agents such as literary agents, critics, journalists, and reviewers. This study thus seeks to demonstrate the possibility of expanding the links between translation studies and Korean studies, and also of broadening the horizons of translation studies.

        학부 한영번역 수업에서는 기계번역을 통해 어떤 도움을 받을 수 있을까?

        This paper aims to identify the benefits of using machine translation for Korean undergraduate students in Korean-into-English Translation. Translation into B languages, English in this case, is often regarded as more difficult than translation into one’s mother tongue. This paper examines machine translation in terms of the end product and the process. The analysis draws from the translations and commentaries of twenty-six undergraduate students during the fall semester of 2022. The results demonstrate that although machine translation is not always accurate and readable, the students were still able to learn from it. They used machine translation as peer feedback to selectively choose expressions and explore different options, which led to enhanced metalinguistic awareness. This helped them to use more authentic and contextualized expressions and improve grammatical accuracy. Using machine translation also served to lower student anxiety and establish a more nonthreatening learning environment. In this regard, machine translation can enhance Korean-into-English translation for undergraduate students in both the product and process.

        아동을 위한 언어유희 번역

        The present study aims to observe how wordplay is translated in picturebooks for young children. Wordplay is widely recognized as a difficult device to translate, often being discussed along untranslatability on the one hand, and the need for active intervention by the translator on the other. If we regard the primary function of picturebooks as entertaining the young audience so as to give them pleasure of literature, creative ways to translate wordplays in picturebooks should be sought. Examining picturebooks revealed that a variety of strategies were used for wordplay translation, including new wordplays not present in the source text, and related rhetoric devices of the target language. The translations have endeavored to find ways to convey the function of wordplays—humor to enhance enjoyment of reading by young children, educational function, and other text-specific functions. Increasing the number of wordplays of more variety in the future is expected to shed more light on wordplays in translation of picturebooks targeting young children as the prime readership.

        한반도 주변국에서는 북한 작가 반디의 「고발」을 어떻게 바라보는가?—일본과 대만 번역서 곁텍스트 고찰

        Kobal has drawn attention as a novel by a writer who is known to live in North Korea, and has been translated in 28 countries to date. Kobal offers an attractive example to examine paratextual transformations in its translations; it has multiple paratextual elements to choose from in translation, particularly in terms of its political ideology; and it has been translated into many languages. According to a previous study of the text’s paratextual transformations, in some translations in the West, anti-North Korea ideology was mitigated; a neutral view between South and North Korea was attempted; and Bandi’s identity was questioned. These versions seem to be translated from the perspective of an outside observer of the situation in North Korea. On the other hand, translations in countries surrounding the Korean Peninsula, directly subject to North Korea’s threat of war, may take a different view. Against this background, this study demonstrates how political ideology is reflected in the paratexts of Kobal’s translations in countries surrounding the Korean Peninsula vis-a-vis some translations in the West as discussed in the previous study. While there are no Chinese or Russian translations, paratexts of Japanese and Taiwanese translations have fully conveyed the source text ideology. The analysis supports the claim that political ideology is a major factor in translation, from determining whether to translate the text to transforming paratextual elements. This paper thus demonstrates a spectrum of ideological reception, through paratexts, in multiple translations with different socio-cultural backgrounds.

        언어유희, 리듬, 그림의 만남: 쉘 실버스타인의 A Light in the Attic의 번역

        Wordplay is known to pose a challenge in translation since it combines sound and meaning. The difficulties are added when wordplay is accompanied by rhythm and images. As multimodal texts that combine wordplay, rhythm, and images to create humor are increasing in number, how to translate them poses an issue to translators. To suggest various methods for translating these texts, this study examines Shel Silverstein’s A Light in the Attic, a collection of 135 poems with witty wordplay, rhythm and illustrations. This study compares six poems in three different translations. The results demonstrate that when translating poems with such a combination, the images can be utilized for the overall direction of translation as both the verbal and the visual contribute to the meaning. Also, wordplay and rhythm should be considered together rather than separately.

        Narrative (Re)framing by Translating and Quoting Foreign Media: Presidential Impeachment News in South Korea

        News articles often quote foreign news to emphasize its truthfulness and neutrality so as to enhance credibility. Decisions on which part of foreign news articles to quote and how to translate them can change the narrative of the news article and audience perception accordingly. Here, quotation is seen as a form of translation as newspapers often quote only a part of foreign press articles. This paper observes how South Korean newspapers quote foreign news just after Korea’s Constitutional Court upheld the impeachment of South Korea’s President Park Geun-hye in 2017. Previous studies largely centered on issues of sharp divide between newspapers based on their ideology. However, Park’s impeachment was supported by major Korean news media and the public. Moreover, despite seemingly straightforward news, her impeachment involves many related issues, rendering it possible to construct different narrative by highlighting certain related issues. Accordingly, despite bipartisan support for the impeachment, each newspaper may still show differences via use of foreign media. News articles in five major South Korean newspapers quoting foreign English-language news articles on the impeachment were examined. The results revealed different narrative frameworks in terms of the meaning of the impeachment, South Korea’s policy prospects, and reform tasks including eradicating corruption and chaebol reform.

        대상독자의 차이에 따른 번역전략 연구 - <이상한 나라의 앨리스>를 중심으로 -

        Children’s literature is characterized by its dual audience. Depending on whether the average reader is a child or an adult, Alice in Wonderland can be a literary classic or a children’s book. This paper sets out to explore how difference in target readership affects translation of same ST. Three Korean translations of Alice in Wonderland are compared and analyzed-one aimed at children, and the other two at adults as target readers. As different target readers imply tenor shift among the register variables, elements which are deemed to relate to tenor shift are compared and analyzed. It is suggested that certain translation strategies are strongly related to tenor variation. This study can be a starting point towards identifying strategies and norms for translating children’s books.

        국내 어린이청소년문학에서 LGBT 도서의수용 과정: 번역의 역할

        LGBT themes now commonly feature in mass media worldwide, making them more accessible to children and young adults. However, these themes have been scarce in literature targeting young readers of South Korea, until recently. This study argues that translations have paved the way for development and reception of LGBT themes in literature for young readers in South Korea. LGBT-themed publications for children and young adults, both translations and indigenous books, are analyzed diachronically, to show that translations have introduced these themes in South Korea’s literature for children and young adults. Recommended book lists over time are also examined to further illustrate the growing acceptance and integration of LGBT themes in literature for young readers. Given the influential role recommended boook lists play in South Korea’s education sector, inclusion of LGBT themes in the lists can indicate their reception in South Korea’s literature for young readers. The process of development and reception of LGBT books is explained through Even-Zohar's polysystem, highlighting how LGBT themes in South Korea's literature for young readers have evolved and interacted with the socio-cultural context of increased exposure to these themes.
