2009 Applied microscopy Vol.39 No.4
Morphology of the gill in Lateolabrax japonicus was investigated after staining the gill, as a result, we found the gill is composed of gill raker, gill arch, gill filament and gill lamellae. The number of gill raker was 7~10 in the upper and 13~18 in the lower. Ultrastructure of the gill in Lateolabrax japonicus were examined by means of the light and transmission electron microscopes. The gill have primary filament and secondary filament (lamellae). The following cells are identified and described: pavement cell, pillar cell, blood cell, mucose cell and chloride cell etc. Simple epithelial layer consists of squamous epithelium contained large nucleus, intracellular organelles etc. and the surface is covered with some of microridges. The lamella pillar structures are characterized by the axial microtubules and lateral membrane interdigitations. The mucous cells were globular in shape, and had almost the mucous granules of same size with various electron density. Chloride cells contain a lot of mitochondria and specifically developed tubular systems.

Vol.55 No.4
A single specimen (522.0 mm in total length) of the family Muraenidae, collected from the waters off south-western Jeju-do Island in November 2021, was identified as Echidna nebulosa on the basis of morphological and molecular methods (DNA barcoding). This species is characterized by several morphological traits as follows: 10 rounded molar, median intermaxillary, and vomerine teeth; 4 predorsal vertebrae, 50 preanal vertebrae and 123 total vertebrae; and a pale background color with two rows of 17–20 blackish brown starry blotches along the head and body. As this is the first record of E. nebulosa in Korea, we propose the new Korean names, “Dung-Geun-Ni-Gom-Chi-Sog” for the genus Echidna, and “Beol-Kkok-Gom-Chi” for E. nebulosa.
Ophichthus erabo (Jordan and Snyder, 1901)
Vol.52 No.4
We report the first occurrence of Ophichthus erabo (Jordan and Snyder, 1901) collected in the waters around Jeju Island. The morphologic characteristics of this species include rich brown semicircular spots distributed on the head, the back, and the dorsal fins. Ophichthus erabo has a similar body color to Ophichthus polyophthalmus but can be clearly distinguished from the latter by the number of vertebrae (152-155 in O. erabo vs. 147-149 in O. polyophthalmus) and the existence of a white spot at the center of a semicircle (i.e., no white spot in O. erabo vs. a white spot in O. polyophthalmus). We suggest a new Korean name for O. erabo to be “Mul-bang-ul-ba-da-baem-gang-eo”.
New Record of a Moray Eel, Strophidon dorsalis (Muraenidae, Anguilliformes) from Korea
Vol.32 No.3
A single specimen of Strophidon dorsalis (1,254 mm in total length), belonging to the family Muraenidae, was firstly collected in a fish trap off the coastal waters of Jindo Island in July 2018. It was characterized by having unpatterned body coloration, thin body, slightly rounded snout, two superorbital pores, three infraorbital pores, and six mandibular pores. This species is distinguishable from a morphologically similar species, S. sathete inhabiting the Korean waters by having three infraorbital pores (vs. four in S. sathete), last infraorbital pore below an anterior part of the eye (vs. below a posterior part of the eye), body depth 3.2~4.1% in total length (vs. 1.8~3.1%), and total vertebrae 154~167 (vs. 188~200). We add S. dorsalis to the Korean fish fauna and propose a new Korean name, “Seo-mang-gom-chi” for the species.

A single specimen of Arothron reticularis (398mm in total length), belonging to the family Tetraodontidae, was collected in the coastal waters off Hansan island using a set net in May 2019. The morphological characteristics of the specimen are as follows: large eyes and mouth, white spots on the body, and a white line surrounding the eyes in an annular shape. A result of maximum likelihood tree showed that A. reticularis is related to A. hispidus (93.6%). We proposed the Korean name “Geu-murl-mu-nui-kkeo-kkeurl-bok,” in accordance with the characteristics of the specimen.

Gymnothorax pseudothyrsoideus
강충배 ( Chung-bae Kang ),송영선 ( Young Sun Song ),박진우 ( Jin Woo Park ),김진구 ( Jin-koo Kim ),정현경 ( Hyeon Gyeong Jeong ) 한국수산과학회(구 한국수산학회) 2018 한국수산과학회지 Vol.51 No.3
A single specimen of Gymnothorax pseudothyrsoideus (424.0 mm TL) belonging to the family Muraenidae, order Anguilliformes, was collected from Jeju Island, Korea, for the first time. The specimen is characterized by jaws closing completely, canine teeth on jaws, teeth not exposed when mouth is closed, ovoid posterior nostril, and body color ranging from yellowish brown to brownish with small dark spots aggregating to form larger spots that from approximately four irregular rows along the body. A comparison of mitochondrial DNA 16S rRNA sequences indicated that this specimen corresponds well with G. pseudothyrsoideus (K2P distance, d=0.002) but differs from other Gymnothorax species (11.9-13.7%). Therefore, the new Korean name “Geu-mul-nun-gom-chi” is proposed for the species G. pseudothyrsoideus.
