The mammalian nasla cavity is composed of rostral non-olfactory and caudal olfactory portions. The olfactory receptor cells. supporting cells and basal cells form the olfactory epithelial lining in the lofactory portion of the nasal cavity. It is known that the lofactory epithelium develops from the embryonic nasal placode in a manner resembling to the ontogeny of the neural tube, and then it reaches nearly full development by the 18th day of pregnancy. However it is not fully understood as to when the function of the olfactory epithelium is matured, This study is undertaken in an effort to pursue the functional development of the olfactory epithelium. In this study histochemical survey of alkline phosphatase and adenosine triphosphatase of rat fetus was made. Femal albino rats. Wistar strain, weighing about 150-200 g were used as experimental animals, and pregnancy was recognized by mens of vaginal smear. The animals were sacrificed under ether anesthesia and then the fetuses were removed by Caesarian section of the 12th day, 14th day, 16th day, 18th day and 20th day of pregnancy. As control group the 1 day and 3 day old neonatal rats were chosen. The specimen, head of fetal and neonatal rat were treated with ordinary procedure to observe the morpholgic changes by means of hematoxylin and eosin stain. The histochemical preparation were made y Gomori's method for alkaline phosphatase activity and Wachstein and Meisel's method for adenosine triphosphatase activity. The results were as follows; 1. On the 12th day of pregnancy, the olfactory placode is observed on the superiolateral side of stomodeum and the olfactory epithelium composed of undifferentiated cells. On the 16th day of pregnancy, most of the olfactory cell is fully differentated and supporting cells intermingled with olfactory cells. 2. Until the 16th day of pregnancy, trace or weak positive reaction for alkaline phosphatase activity has been observed in the apical portion of the epithelium. Since the 18th day of pregnancy strong positive reaction for alkaline phosphatase activity has been continuously observed in the apical portion of the epithelium. 3. Until the 16th day of pregnancy, trace or weak positive reaction for adenosine triphophatase acticity has been observed in the apical portion of the olfactory epithelium. Since the 18th day of pregnancy moderate positive reaction has been observed in the apical portion of the epithelium. From the 29th day of pregnancy strong positive reaction for adenosine triphosphatase activity has been continuously observed in the apical portion of the olfactory epithelium. Based on above observations we may conclude that the function of olfactory epithelium fully matures by the 20th day of pregnancy.

Sudden sensorineural hearing loss is not rare but its pathophysiology has not been fully determined and treatment regimin is still controversial at present. 1)Sex and affected side distribution of sudden hearing loss was 16 patients (44.4%) in male and 20 patients (55.6%) in female, 32 patients (88.9%) in unilateral cases and 4 patients (11.1%) in bilateral cases. 2)Complete recovery was seen in 10 ears (25%), partial recovery in 6 ears (15%), slihgt recovery in 9 ears (22.5%), and no response in 15 ears (37.5%). 3)In evaluation prognosis: a)Patients treated within 10 days after onset showed better recovery rate (64.5%) than those treated 10 days of later (55.6%). b)Flat and ascending type hearing loss had a higher recovery rate (73.7%) than descending and profound loss (52.4%). c)Patients with mild and moderate hearing loss showed better recovery rate (72.2%) than those with severe and profound loss (54.5%) d)patients with vertigo showed poorer recovery rate (47.6%) than those without vertigo (78.9%).

The purpose of the present experiment was to determine the effects of intermediate metabolites of Krebs cycle on brain metabolism. Oxygen consumption of cortex, thalamus, hypothalamus, medulla oblongata and cerebellum of rat brain was measured in Krebs-Ringer bicarbonate buffer solution (pH. 7.4) and the same solutions mixed with 10mM/liter of citric acid, α-ketoglutaric acid, fumaric acid, and malic acid respectively, with or without addition of glucose. Direct method of Warburg was used for the measurement of oxygen consumption throughout the experiment. Oxygen consumption was significantly increased in all medium when intermediates was added, and in order of succinic acid, α-ketoglutaric acid, fumaric acid, malic acid and citric acid. Glucose enhanced the oxygen consumption in solutions containing citric acid, fumaric acid, malic acid while suppressed in the solution mixed with succinic acid, in all areas of the rat brain. In solution mixed with α-ketoglutaric acid, oxygen consumption was accelerated only in cortex and medulla oblongata by addition of glucose. In general, the rat brain tissue is capable of utilizing intermediate metabolites of Krebs cycle in the absence of glucose and the metabolism is significantly accelerated by glucose in all but succinic acid containing solutions, suggesting a permissive action of glucose on Krebs cycle intermediate utilization.

Since Ziegelman (1934) who had reported cutting the parasympathetic nerve supply of the nose as one of the treatment for allergic rhinitis, various means was advised. Vidian neurectomy had performed through trans-septal approach by Malcomson (1959), and transpalatal approach by Hassan M. et al. (1973) Colding-Wood (1961, 1962, 1970) approached the vidian nerve through the transantral approach with satisfactory long term result. However, the technique of approaching the nerve is out of easy.
