        Comparison of the Prevalence of Cardiometabolic Disorders and Comorbidities in Korea and the United States: Analysis of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey

        Background: Comparison of the prevalence of cardiometabolic disorders (CMDs) and comorbidities in Korea and the United States (US) can be an important indicator for forecasting future risk of cardiovascular events in Korea. This study aimed to estimate and compare the prevalence of hypertension, diabetes mellitus (DM), dyslipidemia, obesity, and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in Korea and the US. Methods: A total of 15,872 individuals from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2003–2014 and 26,492 from the Korea NHANES (KNHANES) 2007–2014 were included. Additionally, 164,339 (139,345 from the Health Examinees-Gem Study and 24,994 from the Cardiovascular Disease Association Study) participants enrolled in the Korea Genome and Epidemiology Study were included to investigate the differences of CMDs between urban and rural regions. To estimate the age-standardized prevalence of CMDs in individuals aged 40–69 years, direct standardization using the World Health Organization standard population was performed. Results: The prevalence of CMDs was lower in Korea than the US (hypertension 49.9% vs. 56.8%; DM 13.4% vs. 14.3%; hypercholesterolemia 16.8% vs. 17.8%; obesity 36.2% vs. 38.6%; and MetS 29.4% vs. 36.5%). According to the median survey years, dyslipidemia has become more prevalent in Korea than in the US since 2010. The prevalence of CMDs was greater in rural than that in urban areas in Korea. Conclusion: The prevalence of dyslipidemia in Korea exceeded that of the US after 2010, which was associated with increasing burden of cardiovascular events. The present study suggests that further preventive strategies are needed to mitigate the prevalence of CMDs in Korea.

        A Nutrition Intervention Focused on Weight Management Through Lifestyle Improvements in Prediabetic Subjects

        We reported the cases in order to evaluate the effects of individualized nutrition interventions for enhancing self-management abilities of prediabetic subjects. We conducted four nutrition interventions for weight control in two subjects with high-risk of type 2 diabetes. The first subject was a 53-year-old housewife, and the second subject was a 46-year-old male office worker. The subjects visited the medical center 4 times during the study period, and the lifestyle interventions were advised by a clinical team comprised physicians, clinical dietitians, and nurses. In particular, nutrition intervention to achieve weight loss focused on enhancing motivation and problem-solving skills to improve self-management ability. As a result, both subjects achieved weight loss by the time of their last visits. These two case studies, which differed in terms of sex, occupation, and dietary habits showed the importance of individualized nutrition intervention and forming an intimate relationship based on trust centered on prediabetic subjects. In conclusion, systematic collaboration within the clinical team is necessary, and social infrastructure should be prepared to fully realize the benefits of a systematic intervention program.

        서술부의 함수체계화를 통한 인허가관련 건축법규의 자동검토 응용방안

        As building information modeling (BIM) is expanding its influence in various fields of architecture, engineering, construction and facility management (AEC-FM) industry, BIM-based automated code compliance checking has become possible prospects. For the automated code compliance checking, requirements in building code need to be processed into explicit representation that enables automated reasoning. This paper aims to develop high-level methods that translate verb phrases into explicit representation. The high-level methods represent conditions, properties, and related actions of the building objects and clarify the core content of the constraints. The authors analyze building permit requirements in Korea Building Code and establish a standardized process of deriving the high-level methods. As a result, 60 kinds of the highlevel methods were derived. In addition, method classification, analysis, and application are introduced. This study will contribute to the representation of explicit building code sentences and establishment of the automated building permit system of Korea.

      • 실내건축과 건물정보모델링(BIM)의 기술 연계 및 활용 방안에 관한 고찰

        건물정보모델링(Building Information Modeling: 이하 BIM)은 건축, 엔지니어링, 시공 및 시설관리 산업의 효율성을 극대화 시킬 수 있는 기술로 주목을 받고 있으며 관련 산업 전 분야에서 걸쳐 폭넓은 연구가 진행되고 있다. 실내건축분야도 BIM기반 설계의 직/간접적인 영향을 받고 있으며, 따라서 실내건축분야에서의 관련 BIM 기술 개발 및 활용에 대한 연구가 필요하다. 본 연구는 실내건축과 BIM을 연계함에 있어 공간을 중심으로 접근하였다. BIM은 이전 CAD 시스템에서는 표현할 수 없었던 공간정보를 공간객체를 매개로 생성하고 저장할 수 있으며, 공간객체는 설계 및 다양한 건물의 활동 예측에 활용된다. 또한 기획, 설계, 시공, 유지관리 단계마다 건설정보의 호환이 어렵던 기존 방식과 달리, BIM은 건물 생애주기에 걸쳐 정보의 생성과 흐름이 연속적이다. 따라서 건물 생애주기 전반에 걸친 공간객체의 생성과 수정 그리고 관리의 통합적인 측면에서 실내건축과 BIM기술 연계에 대해 논의할 필요가 있다. 이러한 관점에서, 본 논문은 1) 건물생애주기에 따른 공간객체 중심의 실내건축 접근방법을 제안하였으며, 2) 다양한 건축설계 및 시공분야의 선행연구와 사례를 조사하고 실내건축과 BIM 관련기술을 검토 및 공간객체 중심의 접근방법과 연계함으로써, 구체적인 기술 연계 및 활용 방안을 모색하였다. The impact of BIM (Building Information Modeling) has been expanded to the field of interior architecture and design. Focusing on the spatial object and its properties, a semantic link between BIM and interior architecture design can be found. Performance of interior architecture design generates information about space. Within BIM, this information is managed throughout the entire building life cycle by the creation and modification of spatial object and its properties. Two main objectives have been resolved in this paper are: 1) to suggest spatial object-centered approach of applying BIM to interior architecture, and 2) to review various applications of BIM centered around the domain of interior architecture by reviewing preceding research and actual development projects in the domain of AEC-FM (Architecture, engineering, construction, and facility management). This paper aims to propose an approach to the pragmatic adaptation and application of BIM in the field of interior architecture design.

        자가혈위지압을 활용한 모바일 의료 어플에 대한 체계적 문헌고찰

        Objectives : This study aims to provide information regarding the status and quality of mobile applications (MAs) using self-acupressure by performing a systematic review. Methods : We conducted comprehensive searching on five international databases and two app markets from inception to July 31, 2022 to identify MAs using self-acupressure. We analyzed the characteristics of each MA regarding the name of the MA, registered app markets, target symptoms, developers, the year and country of development, cost, target age, media function, and expertise. We assessed the quality of each MA using Mobile Application Rating Scale (MARS). Results : We identified a total of 30 MAs using self-acupressure (25 MAs from the app market and 6 MAs from clinical studies, with 1 MA in common). 17 out of 24 MAs from the app market provided self-acupressure regimens for various symptoms and the others provided regimens for specific symptoms such as memory, anxiety, depression, asthma, allergy, low back pain, and headache. 14 developers were reported. 23 MAs were developed after 2013. The largest number of MAs were developed in the United States. The target age group of 12 MAs was above the age of 3, and that of 11 MAs was above the age of 12. 14 MAs provided multimedia functions such as videos. 13 MAs provided information of expertise. From clinical studies, only 3 out of 6 MAs were accessible through the app market. 4 MAs were developed by the researchers of the study. In terms of MARS, the score of MAs from the app market was higher than that of MAs from clinical studies in both objective and subjective evaluation areas. Conclusions : This study summarizes the characteristics of MAs using self-acupressure. More MAs using self-acupressure should be developed and further clinical research for MA on each symptom and disease is warranted for the diversification of MA fields using self-acupressure.

      • 인허가관련 건축법규문장의 명시적 표현을 위한 함수체계의 정의 및 개발

        본 논문은 BIM 기반 설계품질 자동검토 구현을 위해 자연어 형태의 법규 문장을 컴퓨터에서 실행 가능한 형태로 변환시키기 위한 논리규칙화 함수를 개발하였다. 논리규칙화 함수는 법규문장의 서술부를 명확한 형태로 변환하며, 검토제약조건을 나타내는 ALU 에 사용되어 최종적으로 KBimCode 를 구성하는 요소로 활용된다. 대상 법규문장 833 개로부터 60 종의 논리규칙화 함수가 도출되었으며, 추후 대상 법규의 범위를 확대하여 광범위한 인허가 관련 및 관련 건축법규를 변환할 수 있도록 함수의 종류와 분류체계를 확장할 것이다. Building Information Modeling (BIM) is expanding its influence in various field of architecture, engineering, construction and facility management (AEC-FM) industry. As one of promising direction of BIM application, automated code compliance checking has been available and explored by several domain experts. This paper mainly focuses on the development of high-level methods for rule-making, which is essential process done in the initial stage of the automated code compliance checking. Requirements for the compliance checking is documented in natural language rules, thus translation is needed to convert them into explicit computable rules. The high-level methods translate verbal phrases in building sentences and represent condition, properties and action of objects in computable form. This paper analyzes building permit related code in Korea to define, classify and demonstrates the high-level methods within the computable rule called KBimCode. The findings are expected to be useful as a guideline for the development of computable rule for an automated building permit system in Korea.

      • Covalent conjugation of mechanically stiff graphene oxide flakes to three-dimensional collagen scaffolds for osteogenic differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) preferentially differentiate to osteogenic lineage when cultured on mechanically stiff substrates. However, collagen sponges, clinically approved scaffolds for bone regeneration, provide soft microenvironment to MSCs. Here, we demonstrate that the covalent conjugation of mechanically stiff graphene oxide (GO) flakes to three-dimensional (3D) collagen scaffolds improves the mechanical properties of the scaffolds and promotes the osteogenic differentiation of human MSCs (hMSCs) cultured on the scaffolds. The covalent conjugation of GO flakes to collagen scaffolds increased the scaffold stiffness by 3-fold and did not cause cytotoxicity. hMSCs cultured on the GO-collagen scaffolds demonstrated significantly enhanced osteogenic differentiation compared to cells cultured on non-modified collagen scaffolds. The enhanced osteogenic differentiation observed on the stiffer scaffolds was likely mediated by MSC mechanosensing because molecules that are involved in cell adhesion to stiff substrates were either up-regulated or activated. The 3D GO-collagen scaffolds could offer a powerful platform for stem cell research and orthopedic regenerative medicine.</P>

        Association between fish and shellfish, and omega-3 PUFAs intake and CVD risk factors in middle-aged female patients with type 2 diabetes

        BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: This study was performed to investigate the association between the dietary intake of fish and shellfish, and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors in the middle-aged Korean female patients with Type 2 diabetes (T2D). SUBJECTS/METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis was performed with 356 female patients (means age: 55.5 years), who were recruited from the Huh’s Diabetes Clinic in Seoul, Korea between 2005 and 2011. The dietary intake was assessed by a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire and analyzed using the Computer Aided Nutritional Analysis program (CAN-Pro) version 4.0 software. RESULTS: In a multiple regression analysis after the adjustment for confounding factors such as age, BMI, duration of diagnosed T2D, alcohol consumption, fiber intake, sodium intake, and total energy intake, fish and shellfish intake of the subjects was negatively associated with triglyceride and pulse wave velocity (PWV). Omega-3 PUFAs intake was negatively associated with triglyceride, systolic blood pressures, diastolic blood pressures, and PWV. The multiple logistic regression analysis with the covariates showed a significant inverse relationship between the omega-3 PUFAs consumption and prevalence of hypertriglyceridemia [OR (95% CI) for greater than the median compared to less than the median: 0.395 (0.207-0.753)]. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that the consumption of fish and shellfish, good sources of omega-3 PUFAs, may reduce the risk factors for CVD in the middle-aged female patients with T2D.

      • Genexol-PM/carboplatin versus paclitaxel/carboplatin with or without bevacizumab in advanced high-grade serous ovarian cancer: interim analysis of a prospective cohort study with historical control

        Objective: Cremophor-free polymeric micelle formulation of paclitaxel (Genexol-PM) plus carboplatin (PM/C) has been reported to have a non-inferior effect with tolerable toxicities when compared to the standard paclitaxel plus carboplatin (P/C) in ovarian cancer. However, there is still a lack of evidence on the effect of an increased dose of paclitaxel in PM/C, especially, when compared to P/C and paclitaxel plus carboplatin with bevacizumab (P/C/B) in advanced high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSO). Thus, we performed a prospective cohort study on PM/C and compared the effect of PM/C with historical control of P/C and P/C/B in HGSO. Methods: We performed a prospective cohort study between October 2015 and June 2019. Patients aged 20 or more years with FIGO stage III-IV HGSO who received PM (260 mg/m<sup>2</sup>)/C (AUC 5) after primary debulking surgery (PDS) were enrolled. We collected clinico-pathologic data from a retrospective cohort when P (175 mg/m<sup>2</sup>)/C (AUC 5) or P (175 mg/m<sup>2</sup>)/C (AUC 5)/B (15 mg/kg) were used as adjuvant treatment after PDS during the same period. Results: A total of 104 patients were enrolled, and 17, 28, and 59 received P/C, P/C/B and, PM/C respectively (Table 1). Complete response was significantly highest in PM/C (29.4 vs. 39.3 vs. 61%, P=0.030; Table 1). Progression-free survival was longest in PM/C (Figure 1) and multivariate analysis showed that gross residual tumor after PDS and P/C were poor prognostic factors (adjusted hazard ratios, 2.415 and 2.751; 95% confidence intervals, 1.172-4.976 and 1.214-6.236; Table 2). Even after adjustment of the patient pool to those with no gross residual tumor after PDS, multivariate analysis still showed that P/C lowered the survival curve (adjusted hazard ratio, 3.342; 95% confidence interval, 1.143-9.777; Table 2). Conclusion: This interim analysis showed that PM/C had a comparable effect to P/C/B for stage III-IV HGSO patients who received optimal cytoreduction during PDS.

        합법적 고객 이익 추구 vs. 공중에게 진실한 정보제공

        Ivy Lee's 1905 Declaration of Principles has been called the beginning point of modern public relations. Lee suggested our object is to supply frankly and openly to the press and public of the United States prompt and accurate information concerning subjects which is of value and interest to the public to know about (Russell, & Bishop, 2009). Since then, however, providing clients' interests or suppling accurate information to the public has been frequently becoming public relations practitioners' ethical dilemma in the real world. By appling four steps in Potter box such as fact, values, philosophical principles, and loyalty, this study examined Korean public relations practitioners' cases which they had experiences in ethical quandaries in terms of providing clients' interests legally or suppling accurate information to the public. Taken as a whole, practitioners have two philosophical principles : rule utilitarian perspective and rule deontological perspective. The various implications of this study was discussed by introducing practitioners' in-dept interviews related to four steps in Potter box.
