We reviewed retrospectively 230 patients who came to emergency room of Kang Nam St. Mary's Hospital and Uijongbu St. Mary's Hospital between 1. January and 31. December 1994. We classified them according to their age, sex, a sort of drug, the cause of poisoning, prehospital care, time-lapse to arrive at hospital after poisoning, psychiatric problem the status of patients. *We conclude as follows; 1. The male to female ratio was totally 1 : 1.98, 1 : 1.24 in a urban area, 1 : 2.43 in a rural area. 2. On age of the patients in this study, the peake incidence was between 20 and 39(55.2%). 3. On seasonal prevalence, the poisoning was most common in summer and spring, in urban area(35.7%) and rural area(37.0%) respectively. 4. The common drug were as follow; Doxylamine, Organophosphate, Acetaminophen in urban area, Paraquat, Organophospate, Doxylamine in rural area 5. The percentage of suicidal attempt were 81.8% and 87.7% in urban area and rural area respectively. 6. The poisoning patients had psychatric problem in 19.4% and 24.6%, in urban area and rural area respectively. 7. Before arrival to emergency room, 27.7% of patient was done prehospital care in rural area. 8. On arrival to emergency room, 95.1% and 73.8% of patients show stable vital sign in urban area and rural area respectively.

Portal vein thrombosis (PVT) is an uncommon cause of presinusoidal portal hypertension. Among various hepatoportal disorders, noncirrhotic portal hypertension conditions such as idiopathic portal hypertension (IPH) are considered to have a close relation with PVT. PVT is known to have several predisposing conditions, including infection, malignancies, and coagulation disorders. There is growing interest and recognition that deficiencies in proteins C and S are associated with a hypercoagulable state. These deficiencies are regarded as key factors of systemic hypercoagulability and recurrent venous thromboembolism. We report the case of a 19-year-old male diagnosed as IPH with PVT and combined deficiencies in proteins C and S.
단고추 종류와 데침처리에 따른 영양성분 변화 및 잔존율 비교

Purpose: To provide the nutritional information of sweet peppers, we have evaluated changes of nutrient content and retention rates by different sweet pepper types and blanching method. Methods: Four types of raw and blanched ($100^{\circ}C$, 30 sec) sweet peppers were prepared and their weight, nutrient content (3 water soluble vitamins, 10 minerals) and retention rates were analyzed. Results: The weight of blanched sweet peppers was decreased than that of raw sweet peppers. From the results of the two-way analysis, the type of sweet pepper had a greater influence than blanching method used on the thiamine, riboflavin, folate and vitamin C contents (but not niacin) (p<0.05). Red pimento contained the most thiamine (0.1 mg/100 g), riboflavin (0.16 mg/100 g), folate ($47.89{\mu}g/100g$) and total niacin (0.11 mg/100 g). Red paprika contained high levels of riboflavin (0.15 mg/100 g) and folate ($44.96{\mu}g/100g$). Orange paprika contained the highest vitamin C content (116.29 mg/100 g). In addition, the mineral content, with the exception of Se, was strongly influenced by the type of sweet pepper rather than the blanching method (p<0.001). The K content of sweet peppers was higher than other minerals. Overall, after blanching, high retention rates (over 70%) were observed in all types of sweet peppers. However, the retention rates of thiamin, vitamin C and Se showed lower levels (less than 70%). Conclusion: The vitamin and mineral contents depends more on the type of sweet pepper; although vitamin and mineral (except Se) contents showed some changes after blanching. Our results can be utilized to determine the effects of cooking processes on nutritional information.
Effects of Methimazole on the Onset of Type 2 Diabetes in Leptin Receptor-Deficient Rats

<P>We investigated the effects of methimazole, an anti-thyroid drug, on the onset of type 2 diabetes in Zucker diabetic fatty (ZDF) rats. For this, 0.03% methimazole was administered to 7-week-old, pre-diabetic ZDF rats in drinking water for 5 weeks and the animals were sacrificed at 12 weeks of age. Methimazole treatment to ZDF rats significantly reduced blood glucose levels, food intake, body weight, and serum T3 levels. Hepatocytes in ZDF-methi rats were more densely stained with eosin than those in ZDF rats because of low fat accumulation in ZDF-methi hepatocytes. The pancreatic islet in ZDF-methi rats was normal compared to that in ZDF rats. Glucagon, not insulin, immunoreactivity in ZDF-methi rats was significantly higher than that in ZDF-methi rats. These suggest that methimazole treatment may delay the onset of type 2 diabetes in leptin receptor-deficient rats and also suggests that thyroid hormones may be necessary for the onset of diabetes.</P>
P2X7 Receptor-mediated Membrane Blebbing in Salivary Epithelial Cells

High concentrations of ATP induce membrane blebbing. However, the underlying mechanism involved in epithelial cells remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the role of the P2X7 receptor (P2X7R) in membrane blebbing using Par C5 cells. We stimulated the cells with 5 mM of ATP for 1${\sim}$2 hrs and found the characteristics of membrane blebbing, a hallmark of apoptotic cell death. In addition, 500 ${\mu}M$ Bz-ATP, a specific P2X7R agonist, induced membrane blebbing. However, 300 ${\mu}M$ of Ox-ATP, a P2X7R antagonist, inhibited ATP-induced membrane blebbing, suggesting that ATP-induced membrane blebbing is mediated by P2X7R. We found that ATP-induced membrane blebbing was mediated by ROCK I activation and MLC phosphorylation, but not by caspase-3. Five mM of ATP evoked a biphasic $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ response; a transient $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ peak and sustained $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ increase secondary to ATP-stimulated $Ca^{2+}$ influx. These results suggest that P2X7R plays a role in membrane blebbing of the salivary gland epithelial cells.
