Purpose: Various hemostatic agents have been introduced in therapy as postoperative bleeding is a poor prognostic factor for postoperative outcomes. These products can be divided into those that directly promote the hemostatic cascade and those that physically form a barrier by absorbing blood. The latter, powder-type hemostatic agents have the advantages of being inexpensive and more absorbable with less foreign body reactions (FBRs) and are applicable to a relatively wide area. This study was conducted to verify the safety and efficacy of a newly invented polysaccharide product (OOZFIX, Theracion Biomedical), which improves blood absorption and hemostatic effects. Methods: Two separate animal experiments were performed. The first evaluated FBRs histologically at 3 days, 2 weeks, and 4 weeks, after implantation of OOZFIX in rats, and the second compared hemostatic performance of OOZFIX and Arista AH (Bard) in the porcine liver punch biopsy model. Results: We found minimal FBRs in the 3-day group and no reactions in both the 2-week and 4-week groups after implantation of hemostatic agents. The time to hemostasis of OOZFIX was not significantly different from that of Arista AH (median [interquartile range]: 9 [6–10] minutes vs. 8 [6–10] minutes, respectively; P = 0.522). When comparing the serial bleeding grade tendency, there was no statistical difference between OOZFIX and Arista AH (P = 0.656). Conclusion: OOZFIX caused a minimal FBR that disappeared within 2 weeks in vivo, and its hemostatic performance was comparable with that of an existing agent, Arista AH. Further clinical studies are required in the future.

The Pd(palladium) doped SnO2(Tin Oxide) thin films sensitive to NH3 gas were prepared on alumina substrate by rf magnetron sputtering method. The gas sensing characteristics of Pd doped SnO2 thin films were studied as a function of film thickness and heat-treatment temperature. The dependence of the sensitivity, the selectivity and the time response of the thin films on heat-treatment temperature, film thickness and gas species were investigated. The thin films of Pd doped SnO2 which were the Pd content of 5 wt%, the film thickness of 5000 ? and the heat-treatment temperature of 600 ℃ showed the highest sensitivity of 68 % for 100 ppm NH3 gas concentration under an operating temperature of 400 ℃. The sensitivity towards NOx gas was not observed in the same condition.
폐구리염화물용액의 분무열분해반응에 의한 생성분말의 특성에 관한 연구

본 연구의 목적은 폐 구리염화물 용액을 원료로 사용하여 분무열분해 공정에 의해 평균입도가 1 ㎛ 이하이며 입도분포가 균일하고 치밀한 조직을 나타내는 미립의 구리산화물 분말을 제조하는데 있다.또한 본 연구에서는 분무열분해 공정에 의해 생성되는 분말의 특성에 영향을 미치는 반응 온도, 원료용액의 유입속도, 분위기기체 및 공기의 유입속도, nozzle tip 크기 및 원료용액의 농도 등의 반응인자들의 영향을 검토하였다.

The microsensors to detect NH3 gas were fabricated by continous deposition of In film by evaporation and ZnO film by rf magnetron sputtering onto the Si3N4 diaphragm that was prepared by MEMS technology. The sensors were heat-treated to dope In into the ZnO thin film. The electrical characteristics of sensitive films were studied as a function of heat-temperature by 4-point probing method and electrometer. The dependence of the sensitivity, selectivity and time response of sensor on heat-treatment temperature was investigated. The microsensor heat-treated at 400℃ that 3000 A ZnO:In film was chosen as gas sensitive film, showed the highest sensitivity 23% at 350ppm NH3 under 366mW heater power. The time response was 90sec. The sensitivity for CO and NOx was not observed.

<▼1><P>Supplemental Digital Content is available in the text</P></▼1><▼2><P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>The association of preterm birth with obesity and metabolic syndrome later in life is well established. Although the biological mechanism for this association is poorly understood, epigenetic alterations of metabolic-related genes in early life may have important roles in metabolic dysfunction. Thus, we investigated the associations of DNA methylations of melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4R) and hepatocyte nuclear factor 4 alpha (HNF4α) with metabolic profiles in cord blood of term and preterm infants.</P><P>We measured metabolic profiles in cord blood samples of 85 term and 85 preterm infants. DNA methylation and mRNA expression levels of <I>MC4R</I> and <I>HNF4</I>α in cord blood cells were quantified using pyrosequencing and real-time PCR. Triglyceride (TG) levels were grouped by percentile as low (<10th percentile), mid (11th–89th percentiles), and high (>90th percentile). A multiple linear regression model was used to assess the differential effects of DNA methylation on metabolic indices in cord blood between term and preterm infants.</P><P>The beta-coefficients for associations between TG levels and methylation statuses of <I>MC4R</I>-CpG3 and <I>HNF4α-</I>CpG2 in the P1 promoter differed significantly between term and preterm infants (<I>P</I> = 0.04 and <I>P</I> = 0.003, respectively). DNA methylation statuses of <I>MC4R</I>-CpG3 and <I>HNF4α</I>–CpG2 in the P1 promoter were significantly lower in preterm infants in the high-TG group compared with those in the mid- and low-TG groups (<I>P</I> = 0.01). Notably, preterm infants in the high-TG group had higher TG levels in cord blood than term infants in the high-TG group (60.49 vs 54.57 mg/dL). In addition, <I>MC4R</I> and <I>HNF4α</I> expression levels were higher in preterm infants than in term infants (<I>P</I> < 0.05).</P><P>Epigenetic alterations of the newly identified genes <I>MC4R</I> and <I>HNF4α</I> in early life might contribute to metabolic profile changes, especially increased TG levels, in the cord blood of preterm infants.</P></▼2>

Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) is a useful tool in researches and in clinical medicine of lung diseases because the BAL fluid contains biochemical and cytological indicators of the cellular response to infection, drugs, or toxicants. However, the variability among laboratories regarding the technique and the processing of the BAL material limits clinical research. The aim of this study was to determine the suction frequency and lavage fraction number necessary to reduce the variability in lavage using male Sprague-Dawley rats. We compared the total cell number and protein level of each lavage fraction and concluded that more cells and protein can be obtained by repetitive lavage with a suction frequency of 2 or 3 than by lavage with a single suction. On the basis of total cell recovery, approximately 70% of cells were obtained from fractions 1~3. The first lavage fraction should be used for evaluation of protein concentration because fractions 2~5 of lavage fluid were diluted in manifolds. These observations were confirmed in bleomycin-induced inflamed lungs of rats. We further compared the BAL data from the whole lobes with data from the right lobes and concluded that BAL data of the right lobes represented data of the whole lobes. However, this conclusion can only be applied to general lung diseases. At the end, this study provides an insight into the technical or analytical problems of lavage study in vivo.
