Comparing Lawrence with Levinas, this paper aims to show the relevance of Lawrence's thinking to the contemporary philosophical issues of otherness and subjectivity Both Lawrence and Levinas share the idea that Western civilization has been dominated by the Identitarian/totalitarian tendency that neutralizes the uniqueness or otherness of each existent, and that this is inseparable from the sovereign positioning of self-present consciousness, conscious ego as subjectivity itself Conspicuously different, however, are their ways to found subjectivity and human relationship on the idea of otherness Inquiring into the meaning of 'Being', Lawrence persistently invokes the deeper level of Being prior to consciousness and envisions a social relationship according to the difference of 'power' On the other hand, Levinas whose ethics is an attempt to go beyond ontology defines subjectivity as hospitality to the Other, absolute responsibility for the Other, drawing on the ideal of 'love' as charity In his view, Lawrence might be suspected of not shaking off the egoistical sovereignty or ontological legacy In turn, Lawrence provides a good vantage point form which to see the risky traits of idealism and Europo-anthropocentrism still lurking in Levinas's postmodern ethics

로렌스의 『처녀와 집시』(The Virgin and the Gipsy)에 나타난 욕망과 형식

Since its posthumous publication, The Virgin and the Gipsy has drawn much critical attention to its non-realistic formal elements such as romance, fairy tale, myth or symbolism But why Lawrence deployed them so conspicuously in this novella unlike in his other realistic novels, and what is their relation to its theme of desire have yet to be clarified Aiming to address these problems, this paper examines the nature of the virginal desire of Yvette, the heroine of the novella, and then how effectively the formal devices work to develop this theme One of the most salient features of Yvette's virginity is her vagueness It is not only a kind of defence strategy to protect her subversive desire in the covertly repressive milieu of the Rectory, but also symptomatic of her self-delusion or false consciousness of denial for the sake of the comforts of the rectory life As the constrictions of the Rectory are not easy to shake off, her desire for the gipsy, who belongs to th outermost fringe of the English society, is to a certain extent imbued with romantic ideas or sentiments The non-realistic formal elements are introduced to expose and undermine this romantic aspect of her desire These include, among others, the allusion to 'the Lady of Shalott,' the dramatization of a brief pseudo-romance scene between Yvette and the gipsy, the insertion of the romance figures of Eastwoods, and the parody of romance and the ostentatious use of symbolism at the climactic flood scene in which she confronts and recognizes her own desire Returning to Lawrence's typical realistic style, the novella's concluding part subtly captures the small, though significant, signs of Yvette's transformation after the flood scene and leaves her open to an ongoing new readjustment to reality, with her desire divested of its romantic tinge

10kW BIPV의 PCS 특성에 관한 연구

BIPV(Building Integrated PV) system that is united on constituent outer covering of building can expect dual effects that reduce expenses for establishment of PV system by adding new function as outer covering material of building except producing the electricity. Also, it is a profitable technology in the economical field because it does not need the building site for a special purpose for the establishment as existing stand along PV system. In this paper, it was simulated through the theoretical consideration about output characteristic analysis of PCS and web-based monitoring of 10kW BIPV, finally was examined the validity through the experiment. BIPV system that is proposed in this paper, was established in BIC(Biotechnology Industrialization Center) of Dongshin University, composed with PCS and Web-monitoring system.

Hec-GeoHMS 모형에 의한 설계 홍수량 산정

As a result of the recent flood crisis, calculation of effective design flood becomes important. The main objective of this study is to simulate design flood of the Seongjoo watershed using GIS(Geographical Information System) and HEC-HMS. Parameters of Seongjoo watershed were extracted by using GIS technique. Time of concentration was estimated Kraven(1∼4 sub-basin), Riziha(5, 6 sub-basin) formulas. The temporal pattern or hyetograph of rainfall can make a significant effect on the peak value and shape of hydrograph, and Yen-Chow, Huff, Keifer-Chu method were applied for this study. This rainfall distribution type could be considered to calculate designed flood. In case that sub-basin was divided, design flood tend to be calculated smaller by storage and retardation of river channel routing. From the result of the runoff rate of 3rd in Huff's 4th quantiles method, the peak runoff rate was magnified by the constant rate when duration increased. 15hr was suggested as an optimal duration time of Seongjoo watershed.

New modified version of the Risk Adjustment for Congenital Heart Surgery category and mortality in premature infants with critical congenital heart disease

Background: Despite advances in neonatal intensive care and surgical procedures, perinatal mortality rates for premature infants with congenital heart disease (CHD) remain relatively high.Purpose: We aimed to describe the outcomes of premature infants with critical CHD and identify the risk factors including the new modified version of the Risk Adjustment for Congenital Heart Surgery (M-RACHS) category associated with in-hospital mortality in a Korean tertiary center.Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study of premature infants with critical CHD admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit from January 2005 to December 2016.Results: A total of 78 premature infants were enrolled. The median gestational age (GA) at birth was 34.9 weeks (range, 26.7–36.9 weeks), and the median birth weight was 1.91 kg (range, 0.53–4.38 kg). Surgical or percutaneous intervention was performed in 68 patients with a median GA at birth of 34.7 weeks (range, 26.7–36.8 weeks) and a median birth weight of 1.92 kg (range, 0.53–4.38 kg). The in-hospital survival rate was 76.9% among all enrolled preterm infants and 86.8% among patients who received an intervention. Very low birth weight (VLBW), persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN), bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), and M-RACHS category 5 or higher (more complex CHD) were independently associated with in-hospital mortality. For the 68 premature infants undergoing cardiac interventions, independent risk factors for mortality were VLBW, BPD, and CHD complexity. Late preterm infant and age at intervention were not associated with patient survival.Conclusion: For premature infants with critical CHD, VLBW, PPHN, BPD, and M-RACHS category ≥5 were risk factors for mortality. A careful approach to surgical intervention and prenatal care should be taken according to CHD type and neonatal condition.

전후 영국노동계급소설과 교육 계급적 정체성: 데이비드 스토리의 『패스모어』, 레이먼드 윌리엄즈의 『접경지역』, 『제2세대』

In the period of mid-1950s to late `60s which witnessed the renaissance of working-class literature, unprecedented number of working-class novels were produced by the writers who were themselves working-class. One of the recurring theme in many of these novels was education and its effects. This is not something to be wondered at; education was the fulcrum of the entire postwar British social project which aimed for welfare state, getting over class division and social inequality. As educational opportunities expanded, social mobility considerably increased. Still in so far as education system remained class-bound, the effects of education for working-class people were complex and ambiguous. Especially those individuals who managed to move out of their own roots through education were likely to suffer from identity crisis and alienation, being torn between two conflicting worlds. Being haunted themselves by these experiences, many working-class writers explored the personal, social implications of educational opportunity throughout their novels. In view of this problematic of education, social mobility and class identity, this paper successively examines David Storey`s Pasmore and Raymond Williams`s Border Country and Second Generation. Each of these novels presents the spiritual crisis of a young academic who, having moved beyond his working-class background, has to go through painful renegotiations with his roots. Pasmore focuses on the confusion, anxiety, alienation and self-division resulting from the thoughtless pursuit of the upward movement through education. On the other hand, Williams`s novels interrogate the ambivalent nature of education and probe the complicated ``return`` journey of the protagonist, which turns out to be essential, though fraught with tension, for the future of his working-class community as well as for the integrity of his being.

『트리스트럼 섄디』의 "현대성"과 그 의미

Laurence Sterne has been radically revaluated since the rise of modernism, and the tendency to valorize his artistic achievements and thoughts gains more force in the postmodern period. This paper examines Tristram Shandy to clarify what makes his work so peculiarly modern, and what are the implications thereof. It is shown that, in this inventive novel, Sterne, imbibing epistemological subjectivism from Locke, not only probes the central issues of modernity such as the monadic state of being or the separation between the subject and the outer world, but also nimbly explores the subtle inner depth of human consciousness. Then this paper takes a glance at the insufficiency of ``sentimentalism`` as a remedy for the monadic state of being, and goes on to argue that the narrator Tristram, who might be considered by some as a model of new identity beyond solipsism, evinces some questionable modern symptoms of the loss of the integral unity of being, as hinted by his deterministic world view or his unwholesome attitudes to death and sex. This paper concludes by indicating a few basic artistic traits and implied problems shared by Sterne and the modern novelists.

네트워크 장비의 히트 싱크 형상에 따른 열적 특성 분석

네트워크 장비의 소비 전력이 증가함에 따라 냉각 기술에 대한 중요성이 점점 높아지고 있다. 네트워크 장비는 눈, 비 그리고 먼지와 같은 이물질이 노출된 옥외 환경에 설치되기 때문에, 장비의 신뢰성과 안정성을 확보하기 위해 주로 자연대류 냉각 방식을 적용한다. 일반적으로 네트워크 장비는 크기 및 무게 등 다양한 제약으로 인해 히트 싱크의 최적 설계가 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 수치해석을 통해 네트워크 장비 히트 싱크의 다양한 형상(II, V, A)에 대한 열적 특성에 대해 분석하였다. 이를 검증하기위해 실제 옥외 환경에 네트워크 장비를 설치하고 테스트를 수행하였다. 그 결과 II 핀 보다 V, A 핀 히트 싱크가 방열 성능이 좋은 것을 확인하였다. Decreasing the temperature of network equipment has become essential owing to the increase in their power consumption. Because the outdoor environment in which network equipment is installed involves harsh conditions such as dust, snow, and rain, they are typically cooled using a natural convection method to ensure reliability and stability. Generally, network equipment require an optimal heat sink design owing to various limitations such as the size and weight. In this study, the thermal characteristics of various types of heat sinks in network equipment are studied through numerical analysis. To verify the heat dissipation effect of network equipment considering different types of heat sinks reviewed via thermal analysis, network equipment were installed in an outdoor environment and tests were performed. Consequently, the V and A type of heat sinks were more effective in heat dissipation than type II.

로렌스의 「대위의 인형」: "인형"의 역할과 상징성

Written shortly before D. H. Lawrence left Europe to set out on a long journey to America, "The Captain`s Doll" indicates a new direction in his fictional writing. There is not only a noticeable change of attitude in the treatment of marital relationship, but also a significant formal change. Coupled with the new adoption of a short novel form, the conspicuous symbolic deployment distinguishes this novella from his earlier works. The main symbol referred to in the title, which is present from beginning to end, plays a predominant role throughout the novella. The doll acts as a catalyst for the plot development. Also it is a subtle medium through which the feelings and inner state of the characters are conveyed. Most importantly, the ``doll`` symbol is charged with rich suggestiveness and philosophical implications regarding the theme of Western ideal of ``love,`` idealism and egoism; the doll implies, among others, the mechanical attributes of the conscious ego, the monadic entity cut off from the cosmic life flow; moreover, to make a doll of someone means to make a ``picture`` or a fixed idea of him, depriving him of his individuality or otherness. This paper aims to scrutinize the doll`s various roles and symbolic meanings, together with the symbol of glacier, and to clarify how they serve to illuminate the essential nature of the relationship between the two main characters, Hannele and Captain Hepburn. As a result, the outstanding symbolic device of this novella turns out to be an integral part of its artistic achievement, bearing witness to the author`s unflagging creative inventiveness.
