      • Environmental, Social, and Governance Performance and Corporate Sustainable Development in China

        Purpose - With the acceleration of global integration and the deepening of the market economy, sustainable development is receiving unprecedented attention worldwide. Corporate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance is one of the most important ways of promoting sustainable development. Companies with good ESG performance excel both operationally and financially, maintaining their competitive advantage and achieving sustainable corporate growth. This study examines the impact of ESG performance on corporate sustainability and identifies factors that influence this relationship from the perspective of external governance structures. Design/Methodology/Approach - This study investigates the impact of corporate ESG performance on corporate sustainability using a fixed-effects model with Chinese A-share listed companies from 2011 to 2020. It also explores the moderating roles of external audit quality, the shareholding ratio of institutional investors, and analyst attention on the impact of ESG performance on corporate sustainability. Findings - The findings show that corporate ESG performance can contribute to sustainable development. External audit quality, the shareholding ratio of institutional investors, and analyst attention have positive moderating effects on ESG performance, which can contribute to sustainable development. Research Implications - This study enriches theoretical research in ESG performance and sustainability, and identifies external governance factors that contribute to the relationship between the two. Consequently, it provides suggestions for listed company growth and sustainability practices

        L-carnitine treatment attenuates renal tubulointerstitial fibrosis induced by unilateral ureteral obstruction

        Background/Aims: Accumulating evidence indicates that L-carnitine (LC) protects against multiorgan damage through its antioxidant properties and preservation of the mitochondria. Little information is available about the effects of LC on renal fibrosis. This study examined whether LC treatment would provide renoprotection in a rat model of unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) and in vitro. Methods: Sprague-Dawley rats that underwent UUO were treated daily with LC for 7 or 14 days. The influence of LC on renal injury caused by UUO was evaluated by histopathology, and analysis of gene expression, oxidative stress, mitochondrial function, programmed cell death, and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/ AKT/forkhead box protein O 1a (FoxO1a) signaling. In addition, H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub>-exposed human kidney cells (HK-2) were treated with LC. Results: LC treatment inhibited expression of proinflammatory and profibrotic cytokines, and was followed by a significant attenuation of tubulointerstitial inflammation and fibrosis. The increased oxidative stress caused by UUO was associated with mitochondrial dysfunction and excessive apoptosis and autophagy via PI3K/AKT/FoxO1a-dependent signaling, and this was abrogated by administration of LC. In H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub>-exposed HK-2 cells, LC decreased intracellular production of reactive oxygen species, and suppressed expression of profibrotic cytokines and reduced the number of apoptotic cells. Conclusions: LC protects against the progression of tubulointerstitial fibrosis in an obstructed kidney.

        Classification of Korean Rice Cultivars based on Reaction Pattern to Japanese Isolates of Blast Pathogen

        Classification of blast resistance type of 129 Korean rice cultivars was carried out based on reaction pattern to 10 Japanese blast pathogen isolates(Pyricularia oryzae). The cultivars were divided into 11 groups based on the presumed resistance genes as follows; Pia type(19 cultivars), Pita-2 type(4), Pik type(3), Pib type(5), Piz type(11), Pik-s type(8), Pik and Pii type(4), Pia and Pita type(8), Pia and Pik type(6), Pita, Pik and Pii type(4) and no-grouping type(57). These results would provide important information to rice breeding for durable and broad resistance to rice blast.

        Prostaglandin $E_1$ Increases cGMP Levels in Beating Rabbit Atria: Lack of Effects of $PGE_1$-induced Cyclic Nucleotides on Secretory and Contractile Functions

        Members of prostaglandin(PG) E-series elicit cellular effects mainly through adenylyl cyclase-cAMP signaling. The role of $PGE_2$-induced increase in cAMP has been shown to be compartmentalized in the cardiac myocytes: $PGE_2$-induced increase of cAMP is not involved in the control of cardiomyocytic contraction. The purpose of the present study was to define the effect of $PGE_1$ on the cGMP levels and the role of $PGE_1$ in the atrial secretory function. Experiments were performed in perfused beating rabbit atria and atrial contractile responses, cGMP and cAMP efflux, and atrial natriuretic peptide(ANP) secretion were measured. $PGE_1$ increased cGMP as well as cAMP efflux concentration in a concentration-dependent manner, however, no significant changes in atrial secretory responses were observed(with $1.0{\mu}M\;PGE_1$; for cGMP, $144.76{\pm}37.5%$, n=11 versus $-16.81{\pm}4.76%$, n=6, control, p<0.01; for cAMP, $187.60{\pm}41.52%$, n=11 versus $7.38{\pm}19.44%$, n=6, control, p<0.01). $PGE_1$ decreased atrial dynamics slightly but transiently, whereas $PGE_2$ showed similar effects but with lower potency. Isoproterenol increased atrial cAMP efflux(with 2.0 nM; $145.71{\pm}41.89$, n=5 versus $7.38{\pm}19.44%$, n=6, control, p<0.05) and mechanical dynamics and decreased ANP secretion. The $PGE_1$-induced increase in cGMP efflux showed a bell-shaped concentration-response curve. $PGE_1$-induced increase of cGMP efflux was not observed in the presence of L-NAME, an inhibitor of nitric oxide(NO) synthase, or ODQ, an inhibitor of NO-sensitive guanylyl cyclase. L-NAME and ODQ showed no significant effect on the $PGE_1$-induced transient decrease of atrial dynamics. These data indicate that $PGE_1$ increases cGMP levels via NO-soluble GC signaling in the cardiac atrium and also show that $PGE_1$-induced increases in cGMP and cAMP levels are not involved in the regulation of atrial secretory and contractile functions.

      • A Location Method Based on Eight- Neighborhood Chain Code for Palmprint Image

        The crucial issue of precise location for on-line palmprint image was to detect corner of hand-shape contour accurately. The existing corner detection algorithm cannot extract corner useful for location automatically. Through analyzing the regularity of chain-code of hand-shape contour, a rapid and effective corner-detection method was proposed in this paper. Firstly, the method of LOG operator and eight neighborhood boundary –tracking algorithm was made use of to extract the hand-shape contour and its chain-code. Then, according to the regularity of hand-shape contour chain-code around corner, the corner of hand-shape contour was detected accurately. Finally, establish a coordinate system according to the corner detected and locate the palmprint image. The experiment results demonstrate the effectiveness and rapidness of the proposed method.

        한국과 중국의 블렌디드 러닝 분야의 연구동향 비교

        블렌디드 러닝은 능동적 학습을 촉진하고 학생의 학습 효과를 향상하기 위해 교육에서 가장 많이 사용되는 방법의 하나로 꼽히며 대학이 학습자를 유치하는 가장 효과적인 방법의 하나로 간주한다. 이 논문은 문화차원이론을 바탕으로 문화적으로 유사하면서도 차이점을 보유하고 있는 한중 양국에서 블렌디드 러닝이 이루어지는 연구 동향을 분석한다. 연구 방법은 키워드 분석 및 시각화를 이용하였고 데이터는 WoS, KISS, CNKI에서 1990년부터 2022년 6월까지 게재된 블렌디드 러닝 관련 논문을 수집하여 분석을 진행했다. 연구 결과에 따르면, 보편화된 연구주제였던 블렌디드 러닝이 코로나 발생 이후부터 다양한 연구 분야 클러스터가 형성되어 세분되고 있다. 한국과 중국도 글로벌 연구 동향과 흡사하면서 각자 색다른 연구 동향이 보인다. 문화차원이론으로 분석하면 특히 절제와 장기지향적인 공통된 패턴이 보인다. 이 연구의 기대효과는 국가 문화가 교육과 연구의 패턴을 형성하는데 어떤 역할을 하는지에 대해 파악할 수 있다는 것이다. 또한 다문화 교육환경 속에서 효과적인 학습효과를 지닌 블렌디드 러닝을 개발하는데 유의미한 시사점을 제시할 수 있다. Blended Learning is one of the most popular methods in education for encouraging active learning and improving student learning effectiveness, and it is regarded as one of the most effective methods for universities to attract students. Based on the cultural dimension theory, this paper examined blended learning research trends in both South Korea and China, which are culturally similar but also differ. The research methods include keyword analysis and visualization. Academic papers on blended learning indexed by WoS, KISS, and CNKI from 1990 to June 2022 were collected and analyzed. According to the findings, since the outbreak of COVID-19, the common research topic of blended learning has been subdivided by forming clusters in various research fields. Korea and China exhibit similarities to global research trends while exhibiting differences based on cultural background. The cultural dimension theory-based analysis reveals a common pattern that is especially long-term oriented. The findings can suggest significant implications for designing what role national culture plays in forming patterns of education and research and for developing blended learning with effective impacts in a multicultural educational environment.
