To study fauna of Silla University located in Mt. Baek-yang, we conducted six surveys from 29 May 2011 to 28 April 2012. We found five phyla 41 orders 197 species of animals inhabiting in this area: four phyla 27 orders 163 species of invertebrates and in vertebrates one order six species of fishes, three orders nine species of amphibians and reptiles, six orders 14 species of aves, and four orders five species of mammals. Of these species, some Korean endemic species were included: a fish of Rhodeus uyekii in a pond near main gate of this university, a frog of Rana coreana in a creek near a dormitory, and a rabbit of Lepus coreanus and a water deer of Hydropotes inermis in a grass region near a main stadium. A kind of hawk, Falco tinnunculus as a natural monument (animal) of no. 323-8, was observed on a building of medical and life science. A blue frog of Hyla japonica as a variation was found near a spring resort. Therefore, this area is considered an ecologically important area having a high animal diversity.

Despite advanced technologies in intensive care, pandemic influenza (H1N1 2009) can rapidly progress to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and cause death in a small subset of patients. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is expected to provide adequate gas exchange, to reduce ventilator-induced lung injury and, eventually, to improve outcome in these patients. A previously healthy, young female received mechanically ventilatory support because of rapidly progressive respiratory failure caused by 2009 H1N1 influenza. As she failed to respond to high ventilatory support, ECMO was instituted at 6 hours after admission. We describe detailed course of case and literature review on ECMO, helping physicians make a decision to initiate ECMO in patients with influenza-related ARDS.

This study explored epidemiological trends in trichomoniasis in Daegu, South Korea. Wet mount microscopy, PCR, and multiplex PCR were used to test for Trichomonas vaginalis in vaginal swab samples obtained from 621 women visiting 2 clinics in Daegu. Of the 621 women tested, microscopy detected T. vaginalis in 4 (0.6%) patients, PCR detected T. vaginalis in 19 (3.0%) patients, and multiplex PCR detected T. vaginalis in 12 (1.9%) patients. Testing via PCR demonstrated high sensitivity and high negative predictive value for T. vaginalis. Among the 19 women who tested positive for T. vaginalis according to PCR, 94.7% (18/19) reported vaginal signs and symptoms. Notably, more than 50% of T. vaginalis infections occurred in females younger than 30 years old, and 58% were unmarried. Multiplex PCR, which simultaneously detects pathogens from various sexually transmitted infections, revealed that 91.7% (11/12) of patients were infected with 2 or more pathogens. Mycoplasma hominis was the most prevalent co-infection pathogen with T. vaginalis, followed by Ureaplasma urealyticum and Chlamydia trachomatis. Our results indicate that PCR and multiplex PCR are the most sensitive tools for T. vaginalis diagnosis, rather than microscopy which has been routinely used to detect T. vaginalis infections in South Korea. Therefore, clinicians should take note of the high prevalence of T. vaginalis infections among adolescent and young women in order to prevent persistent infection and transmission of this disease.
방부살균제에 의한 유화형화장품에서의 Staplylococcus aureus 의 성장억제

S. aureus를 유화형 화장품시료에 접종배양한 결과, 최적성장조건인 pH 7.0, 온도 37℃에서 시료조성에 따른 성장률은 물과 오일의 부피비 조성에서 70 : 30, 80 : 20, 90 : 10, 30 : 70, 50 : 50의 순서로 균증식이 되었다. 물성에 있어 화장품시료의 pH는 40일 경과시 7.6에서 6.5로 변화되어고, 상대적으로 낮은 굴절률을 가는 물질들이 영양원으로 소모되어 시료(sample 3)의 굴절율이 1.4415에서 1.4490으로 변화되었으며, 균의 증식으로 인하여 균일하게 유화된 유화형 화장품시료의 相이 파괴되었고 약간의 변색, 변취와 함께 크리밍형상, 응집현상이 나타났다. 방부살균제가 첨가되지 않은 경우 약20일 경과후 부터 제품의 변질이 시작되었으나 방부살균제를 첨가하여 challenge test를 실시한 결과, S. aureus의 성장이 억제되었으며 40일 경과시 균수는 방부살균제가 첨가되지 않은 시료의 경우 10^8개/㎖이었으나 p-hydroxy benzoic acid propy ester - phosphric acid buffer solution을 200ppm 첨가한 경우 7×10^8개/㎖로 균수가 현저히 감소하였다. 균의 성장억제 효과는 p-hydroxy benzoic acid propylester+phosphoric acid buffer solution〉p-hydroxy benzoie acid methyl ester+phospheric acid buffer solution〉p-hydroxy benzoic acid methyl ester+phydroxy benzoic acid propyl ester〉p-hydroxy benzoic acid methyl ester+acetic acid buffer solution의 순으로 우수하였고 pH, 농도, 균수 등은 양호한 수준을 유지하였다. Emulsion-type cometics contain many kinds of carbon and energy source i.e., vegetable oil, mineral oil and carbohydrate etc., those can be used as nutrients and caused contamination by micrabials. Thereby we have to keep cosmetics from the possibility of contamination by microbials. From this viewpoint, the purpose of this study is to get the data necessary not only to prevent dermatopathia occurred by microbials but also to sustain the quality. In this experiment, we observed how many Staphylococcus aureus were grown in the prepared cosmetics with or without antiseptics so as to prevent contamination. When the contamination proceed, the stability of phase was disturbed and creaming phenomina was happened with some discoloration and bad smell. About 40 days after, the pH was changed from 7.6 to 6.5 and the refractive index of cosmetic raw materials were changed from 1.4415 to 1.4490(water : oil=70:30). By adding antiseptics into prepared cosmetics, the number of Staphylococcus aureus with challenge test method were decreased to 7×10^8 cell/㎖. For the antibacterial effect against Staphylococcus aureus, p-hydroxy benzoic acid propyl ester in phosphoric acid buffer solution was the best.

<P>The cytoprotective mechanism of 7, 8-dihydroxyflavone (DHF) against oxidative stress-induced cell damage with respect to its stimulatory effect on the expression of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), a potent antioxidant enzyme, was investigated in the present study. Up-regulation of HO-1 expression by DHF was both dose and time dependent in lung fibroblast V79-4 cells. DHF also increased the protein expression level of the transcription factor nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), and induced the translocation of Nrf2 from the cytosol into the nucleus, leading to elevated HO-1 expression. The siNrf2 RNA-transfection attenuated HO-1 expression induced by DHF treatment. In addition, DHF induced the activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), while U0126 (a specific pharmacological inhibitor of ERK kinase) abrogated DHF-activated Nrf2 and HO-1 expression. This suggests that DHF increased the levels of Nrf2 and HO-1 via ERK-dependent pathways. Furthermore, DHF significantly prevented the reduction of cell viability in response to oxidative stress; however, U0126 attenuated the protective effect of DHF. Taken together, these results demonstrate that DHF protected cells from oxidative stress via the activation of an ERK/Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway.</P>
Emulsion형 化粧品의 Escherichia coli 汚染防止에 대한 防腐制效果

Most of cosmetics are emulsion products that contain the source of nutrition-vegetable oil, mineral oil and carbohydrate etc. -so there is much possibility of contamination by microbials. The purpose of this study is to get the data necessary not only to prevent dermatopathia occurred by Escherichia coli but to sustain the quality and the wear of cosmetics as the result of finding optimum growth condition and the growth condition of Escherichia coli for enviro-factor, utilizing antiseptic so as to prevent contamination by observing it in emulsion type cosmetic. The results are as follows : 1. The optimum growth condition of Escherichia coli : pH7.0 and 37.5℃ The mixing volume ratio of water / oil was 70/30 in this experiment. 2. Adding antiseptics into emulsion type cosmetic, the number of Escherichia coli was decreased from 10^8(cell/ml) to 8 x 10^3(cell/ml) 3. Immune modulation effect of probiotics in ageing mouse

Background: With aging, immune senescence increases inflammation. The immune modulation effect of probiotics has been studied, but its mechanism needs to be elucidated. Objectives: To investigate the immune modulation effect of probiotics in aging mice. Methods: Six week-old mice(group A) and 14 month-old mice(group B & C) were each fed with saline(group A and B) and probiotics(group C). After 5 weeks, their spleens and blood were collected. Splenocyte suspensions were prepared and CD4+25- and CD4+25+ lymphocyte populations were analyzed with flow cytometry. The presence of INF-γ, IL-6 and TNF-α were measured in the splenic macrophage supernatants and blood serum samples before and after treatment with LPS. Results: We measured the differences of the level of INF-γ, IL-6 and TNF-α before and after LPS stimulation and the differences were compared among the 3 groups. IL-6 and TNF-α showed significant differences between group B and C. The level of INF-γ, IL-6 and TNF-α in blood serum and the FACS analysis of lymphocytes showed no difference among the 3 groups. Conclusion: The probiotics group showed less increase of TNF-α and IL-6 compared to that of the old mice control group. However, the probiotics group did not show elevation of CD4+25- cells compared to the control group. Also, INF-γ, IL-6 and TNF-α level in blood serum showed no significant differences between the control and probiotics group. We are planning further research to investigate the immune modulation effect of probiotics.
