In order to develop vaccines against HBV, 10 different plasmids expressing various regions of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) were constructed, first. Then, CHO cells were transfected with the plasmids and examined their HBsAg expression levels. We then established CHO transfectants expressing dhfr and HBsAg using pIEsp2878-dhfr plasmid and treated them with methotrexate (MTX). Finally, we selected IY-CHO-2 and IY-CHO-11 cell lines showing the amplified expression of HBsAg containing pre-S2 and S region. These cell lines expressed expected correct size (about 1 kb in lengte) of HBsAg mRNA.

A protein-polysaccaride fraction Kp(53.9% polysaccharide, 14.2% protein) was separated from the shake-cultured mycelia of a basidiomycetous fungus, Phellinus linteus, and its antitumor activity against sarcoma 180 in ICR mice was investigated. When administered after the tumor implantation. Kp exerted antitumor activity by inhibiting the growth of the sarcoma 180 solid tumor by 71.5% and increasing the life span of the sarcoma 180 ascitic mice by 51.5% at 100 ㎎/㎏. In pretreatment tests, in which Kp was administered once daily for 9 days before the tumor implantation. Kp inhibited the growth of the solid and ascites form of sarcoma 180, respectively, by 35.4% and by 80.3% at 100 ㎎/㎏. However, Kp showed no in vitro cytotoxic activity against a murine leukemia L1210 and a human gastric tumor SNU.1 upto the concentration of 200 ㎍/㎖. From these results, it is clear that the antitumor activity of Kp is exerted through its immunomodulating activity on the host's immune system.

This paper presents a new optimizing computational algorithm for the on-line control of system voltage and reactive power flow to minimize power transmission losses. The power transmission losses are minimized by the Search method while satisfying the constrained system voltage conditions. The results were shown much more efficiently compared with the conventional method when the computer program was developed using this alogrithm and applied to the model system.

We have experienced three cases of male breast cancer in our series, 586 cases of all surgically treated breast cancer from 1970 to 1987. Pathological diagnosis covered infiltrating ductal carcinoma, intraductal carcinoma, and papillary carcinoma. One case was treated on partial mastectomy and two cases on simple mastectomy with axillary dissection. In view of academic and clinical interacts, we report three cases of male breast carcinoma along with literature review.
InStep^(TM) DfE를 이용한 에코디자인 수행사례 : Applying InStepTM DfE

개인용 컴퓨터를 대상으로 설계자용 에코디자인 소프트웨어인 InStep^(TM) DfE를 이용하여, 에코디자인을 수행한 사례를 제공한다. 에코디자인을 위하여 우선, 기준제품의 환경성을 유해물질, 재활용성, 분해성, 자원고갈, 에너지효율성, 5가지의 환경측면에 초점을 맞추어 평가하였다. 그리고 평가결과를 역추적하여 취약한 환경측면과 그 원인 부품을 규명하고 이를 개선하기 위한 대안을 개발하였다. 대안은 [납의 제거]와 [100% 재활용된 ABS사용], [ABS를 PVC로 교체] 3가지였으며, 개발된 대안과 기준제품의 환경성을 비교평가하여 최적의 에코디자인 대안을 선정하였다. Ecodesign for personal computer by applying InStep^(TM) DfE, which is a web based ecodesign software for designer, conducted in this study. In first, environmental assessment of reference product focusing on five ecodesign strategy(hazardous substance, recyclability, disassembly, resource consumption, energy efficiency) is performed. Then, identifying environmentally weak point of reference product and developing alternatives to improve it's weakness is processed. Three alternatives is considered that 'lead-free soldering', 'replacing virgin ABS to 100% recycled ABS', 'replacing ABS to PVC'. And finally, environmental comparative assessment between alternatives and reference product is preformed to determine best product design.

The Ricinus communis L. was planted 70cm x 70cm in field to investigate on the changes of photosynthesis followed by the investigation on the light intensity. The photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance were increased as the PAR was increased to 2000μ mol/m2/s in leaves of all. A linear equation were obtained between net photosynthetic and transpiration rate. The quadratic equations were obtained between net photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance, and a linear equation was obtained between transpiration rate and stomatal conductance. It was also confimed that intercellular CO2 concentration was significantly correlated with net-photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance under low light intensity.

Background: Korean type 2 diabetic patients who are frequently non-obese, may be genetically different from Western type 2 diabetics who are frequently obese. Therefore, the diabetic complications of type 2 diabetes mellitus in Korea may be also different from those of Western countries. Until now, most studies reported in Korea did not analyse the microvascular complications of type 2 diabetes mellitus according to obesity, and also the criteria in the diagnosis of microvascular complications were different in each study. We investigated the microvascular complications and its relationship with obesity, in type 2 diabetic patients visiting an outpatient clinic. Methods: The study subjects were type 2 diabetic patients visiting an outpatient clinic of Ajou University Hospital. We selected patients participating in a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test, retrospectively. Type 2 diabetes was diagnosed according to the WHO/NDDG classification of diabetes. Biochemical studies including lipid profile, plasma insulin and C-peptide levels were done. Anthropometric measurements were performed. Based on BMI (㎏/㎡), the patients were divided into the following groups: the lean group, when the BMI was less than 20 ㎏/㎡ the ideal body weight (IBW) group, if the BMI was between 20 ㎏/㎡ and 25 ㎏/㎡ in women and 20 ㎏/㎡ and 27 ㎏/㎡ in men; and the obese group, when the BMI was $gt;25 ㎏/㎡ in women and $gt;27 ㎏/㎡ in men. Results: 1. Neuropathy (45.2%) was the most frequent among the microvascular complications, and the frequency of retinopathy was 15.1%, and that of nephropathy was 4.9%. Within 5 years of diabetes duration, the frequency of neuropathy, retinopathy, and nephropathy was 43.2%, 11.8%, and 2.9%, respectively. 2. Glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA_(1c)) and fasting blood glucose levels were not different among the three groups. Beta cell function{Δ (insulin 30min - insulin Omin)/Δ(glucose 30min - glucose 0min)} was the highest in the obese group. However, beta cell function(ΔI/ΔG) divided by the basal insulin level, considered insulin resistance, was not different among the three groups. 3. Within 5 years of diabetes duration, retinopathy tended to be the most frequent in the lean group, whereas neuropathy tended to be the most frequent in the obese group, and body mass index influenced the retinopathy and neuropathy, statistically significantly. Conclusion: Diabetic neuropathy was the most frequent among microvascular complications of type 2 diabetes mellitus in our study subjects. At the time of presentation within 5 years of diabetes duration, the lean group of type 2 diabetics had a tendency of the more frequent retinopathy, the obese group had a tendency of the more frequent neuropathy. These results suggest that type 2 diabetes mellitus in Korea is also not a single disease entity, as in Western countries and is a heterogenous group of disorders with a diversity of microvascular complications. However, the more studies about this will be required.
