Summary

Introduction of rapid malaria diagnostic tests (RDT) initiated numerous field evaluations in various epidemiologic settings. But the efficiency of some RTD kits based on aldolase raised reservations for direct implementation of RDT into clinical settings. We performed Binax Now malaria test in 84 Korean Plasmodium vivax isolates and compared it with the traditional Giemsa stain microscopy test as the reference standard. The sensitivity of Binax Now was 62.0% for P.?vivax cases (52/84, 95% CI 51.2–71.6%) with 100.0% specificity (50/50, 95% confidence interval 92.9–100%). After the aldolase gene sequence analysis of 84 isolates, two synonymous mutations in aldolase gene were identified in both Binax Now positive and negative samples. No significant association between the mutations and Binax Now malaria tests was found. Thus, the genetic variability would not explain the poor performance of P.?vivax RDTs by detecting aldolase in ROK isolates.

Changes in Corneal Sensation and Ocular Surface in Patients With Asymmetrical Keratoconus
Cho, Kyong Jin,Mok, Jee Won,Choi, Min Yeong,Kim, Ja-yeon,Joo, Choun-Ki Masson Pub. USA 2013 Cornea Vol.32 No.2
PURPOSE:: To describe tear function, ocular surface changes, and corneal sensitivity in patients with asymmetrical keratoconus (KC). METHODS:: Thirty-one patients with asymmetrical KC (31 KC and 31 subclinical KC eyes) and 30 control subjects (1 eye in each subject) were enrolled in this prospective, case-control study. The patients and control subjects underwent ocular surface examinations including corneal sensitivity measurements, the Schirmer test using topical anesthesia, tear osmolarity test, and conjunctival impression cytology. RESULTS:: Mean corneal sensitivity and Schirmer test values were significantly lower in the KC and subclinical KC eyes compared with the control eyes. The conjunctiva of KC and subclinical KC eyes showed significantly higher grades of squamous metaplasia and goblet cell loss compared with the control group. However, no significant difference in tear osmolarity was found among the groups. CONCLUSIONS:: The corneal sensitivity and ocular surface changes were significant in the subclinical KC and KC eyes compared with the control subjects. Ocular surface disease in KC was characterized by tear deficiency disorder and abnormal impression cytology results. However, no significant difference in tear osmolarity was found among the groups. The decrease in corneal sensitivity and ocular surface change may be associated with the pathogenesis of ocular surface changes in KC and the progression of the disease.
The Effect of Attachment-Improvement Activities for Korean Children Ages 12 to 35 Months

The purpose of the study was to find out whether the attachment-improving activities for working mothers of young children and their teachers at childcare centers could increase the attachment level when Q-set was given. Activities, which were developmentally appropriate and easy to perform at home and centers were selected. Mothers and teachers were expected to do at least two activities a week at home and centers with children for 10 weeks. Sixty three young children, their mothers and 19 teachers participated in the study. The results of the study indicated that the attachment level of the teachers of the experimental group improved significantly compared to that of the comparative group. But mothers‘ attachment level with children for both groups shows no significant difference. For a long time it has been believed that attachment is the emotional quality, which should be formed at home between mothers and their children. However, this research showed that the attachment level can be improved by teachers. It is important to improve the attachment quality in social contexts such as centers.

Purpose: Current clinical practices favor less or no thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) suppression for low- to intermediate-risk thyroid cancer patients who receive thyroid lobectomy. The association of TSH suppression on healthrelated quality of life (HR-QoL) in patients after thyroid lobectomy is not well studied. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of TSH suppression on patient HR-QoL after thyroid lobectomy. Methods: This study included patients enrolled in an ongoing, multicenter, randomized controlled study investigating the effects of TSH suppression. Patients were randomized to either the low-TSH group (TSH target range, 0.3–1.99 μIU/mL) or the high-TSH group (TSH target range, 2.0–7.99 μIU/mL). The HR-QoL, hyperthyroidism symptom, and depression symptom questionnaires performed preoperatively and 2 weeks and 3 months postoperatively were evaluated. Results: Total of 669 patients (low-TSH group, 340; high-TSH group, 329) were included. Although total HR-QoL score changes were not different between the 2 groups, the high-TSH group had a significantly higher score in the physical domain at postoperative 3 months (P = 0.046). The 2 groups did not have significant differences in hyperthyroidism and depression scores. Conclusion: In the short-term postoperative period, the physical HR-QoL scores in thyroid lobectomy patients were better when they did not receive TSH suppression. This study suggests the importance of considering HR-QoL when setting TSH suppression targets in thyroid lobectomy patients.
