Background: It is well known that genetic component plays an important role in developing obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus. A number of candidate genes have been suggested, but the major gene determining the development of obesity and type 2 diabetes has not yet been uncovered, Previous studies suggest that polymorphisms of the intestinal fatty acid binding protein (FABP2) and uncoupling protein 1 (UCP-1) gene were related with obesity and/or insulin resistance in several populations. Methods: We examined 76 type 2 diabetic patients (aged 44±6years) and 96 healthy controls (aged 25±3 years). AIa54Thr polymorphism of the FABP2 gene and A to G polymorphism (-3826) of the UCP-1 gene were determined by polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism method. Results: The Thr54 allele of the FABP2 gene was found with a frequency of 0.33 in nondiabetic controls and 0.36 in type 2 diabetic patients. The genotype frequency of the AIa54Thr polymorphism was similar in nondiabetic and diabetic subjects (x²=0.87, P=0.64). The -3826 G allele of UCP-1 gene was found with a frequency of 0.51 in nondiabetic controls, and 0.46 in type 2 diabetic patients. The genotype frequency of the -3826 A to G polymorphism was also similar in nondiabetic and diabetic subjects (x²=1.46, p=0.46). When the subjects of each Groups were subdivided into nonobese and obese group by BMI of 25 kg/㎡, there was no significant difference in genotype frequencies of the UCP-1 and FABP2 gene polymorphisms. Conclusion: These results suggest that either the AIa54Thr polymorphism of the FABP2 gene or the A to G polymorphism (-3826) of UCP-1 gene do not play a major role in developing type 2 diabetes mellitus or obesity in Korean.

The HVAC (Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning) system of an electric vehicle consists of an electric compressor including PMSM (Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine) and a PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) heater. Each of these systems is configured independently. This paper proposes an HVAC system that integrates the compressor control system and the heater control system. The system shares an input noise filter, DC link capacitors, and a controller that includes an MCU. In addition, several of the current sensors in each system are replaced with a single current sensor in the DC link. In a typical cooling sequence that uses only a compressor, the integration system can use conventional single shunt control to restore the three-phase current and to control the speed of the compressor. However, the system cannot be controlled by the conventional method of only measuring current in the effective vector in operation, where the compressor and the heater are used together to increase heating performance. The proposed method measures the DC link current in the zero vector as well as the effective vector, and separates the compressor current and the heater current. Therefore, the compressor and the heater can be simultaneously controlled by one current sensor even in operation using the compressor and the heater. The effectiveness of the proposed system and control method are verified through experiments.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We examined the effect of fucoidan, an immune modulator, on the phagocytic capacity of porcine peripheral blood polymorphonuclear cells (PMNs) exposed to culture supernatant from lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). For this purpose, we evaluated the phagocytic capacity of porcine PMNs by flow cytometry and measured levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (<I>TNF-α</I>) protein and mRNA in porcine PBMCs by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and real time-polymerase chain reaction (PCR), respectively. Fucoidan or LPS alone did not affect the phagocytic capacity of PMNs, but phagocytosis by these cells was increased by exposure to culture supernatant from PBMCs treated with fucoidan or LPS. In particular, the culture supernatant from PBMCs treated with LPS revealed excessive phagocytosis of PMNs. This excessive phagocytic capacity was diminished by co-treatment LPS with fucoidan. Production of <I>TNF-α</I> mRNA and protein increased upon treatment of PBMCs with either fucoidan or LPS, but this effect was also diminished by co-treatment LPS with fucoidan. The ability of culture supernatant from PBMCs treated with LPS and/or fucoidan to increase the phagocytic capacity of PMNs was inhibited by anti-recombinant porcine <I>TNF-α</I> polyclonal antibody. These results suggested that fucoidan suppresses the phagocytic capacity of PMNs by modulating <I>TNF-α</I> production by LPS-stimulated PBMCs.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The clinical and pharmacological activities of fucoidan, a cell wall polysaccharide found in the brown seaweed, have been known to modulate the immune function. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of fucoidan on the phagocytic capacity of porcine peripheral blood polymorphonuclear cells (PMNs) in inflammation condition. </LI> <LI> The phagocytic capacity of PMNs was enhanced by the culture supernatant from PBMCs treated with either fucoidan or LPS. In particular, the culture supernatant from PBMCs treated with LPS revealed excessive high phagocytosis of PMNs This excessive phagocytosis of PMNs was reduced by treatment of fucoidan. </LI> <LI> In addition, the production of TNF-α was shown to increase upon the treatment of either fucoidan or LPS in PBMCs. However, the excessive production of TNF-α in PBMCs by LPS treatment was reduced by addition of fucoidan. </LI> <LI> The level of TNF-α mRNA expression in PBMCs was also up-regulated by either the fucoidan or LPS treatment. However, the excessive expression of TNF-α mRNA in PBMCs by LPS treatment was decreased by fucoidan. </LI> <LI> This ability of culture supernatant from PBMCs by LPS and/or fucoidan to increase the phagocytic capacity of PMNs was inhibited by addition of anti-rp TNF-α polyclonal antibody (pAb). </LI> <LI> These results suggested that fucoidan can suppress excessive phagocytic capacity of PMNs through modulation of TNF-α production in inflammation condition. </LI> </UL> </P>
Echinostoma ilocanum Infection in Oddar Meanchey Province, Cambodia

Fecal examinations using the Kato Katz technique were performed on a total of 1,287 villagers (945 students and 342 general inhabitants) of Oddar Meanchey Province, Cambodia in May 2007 and November 2009. The overall intestinal helminth egg positive rate was 23.9%, and the most prevalent helminth species was hookworms (21.6%). Other helminth eggs detected included echinostomes (1.0%), Enterobius vermicularis (0.8%), small trematode eggs (0.7%), which may include Opisthorchis viverrini and Haplorchis spp., and Hymenolepis nana (0.4%). In order to recover adult echinostomes, we treated 2 patients with 10-15 mg/kg praziquantel and purged. Total 14 adult echinostomes, 1 and 13 worms from each patient, were collected. The echinostomes characteristically had 49-51 collar spines and 2 round or slightly lobated testes. They were identified as Echinostoma ilocanum (Garrison, 1908) Odhner, 1911. So far as literature are concerned, this is the first record on the discovery of human E. ilocanum infection in Cambodia.

Domestic construction market is congested enough at the moment cause enterprises to enter overseas market such as Mongolia and Russia. However most previous studies conducted at a temperature above freezing. In this study, performance analysis of cement mortar was conducted without extra heating air supplying at a low temperature below freezing. For this study, all of materials for experiment were kept in a low temperature for 48 hours before mortar mixing. After mortar curing at low temperature, compressive strength was measured at the early ages. Also, properties of hardened cement material was analysed using TG-DTA and MIP. At experiment series 1, to figure out whether cement hydration reaction at low temperature below freezing is possible or not, use anti-freezing agent to protect freezing of water used in mortar mixture and analyze increasing amount of Ca(OH)₂, chemical bound water contained in mortar by usage of hardening accelerator and curing period at low temperature condition. At experiment series 2, insulated and heating form have been used with mortar has same mix proportion as series 1. Thermal performance and compressive strength of mortar are conducted and analyzed excremental result according to the variable form types. Especially, high fineness cement is considered to use with insulated form. Hydration heat of quicklime is used for heating form in this study. The analysis of this study confirmed that high fineness cement with insulated form and heating form can be suitable to be used in low temperature environment.

This paper proposes an automatic advanced angle algorithm for the high-speed operation region control of 7-phase BLDC motor. when the 7-phase BLDC motor is operated at high speed, phase current delay occurs with respect to the phase of the back-emf due to the increase of the reactance component of the phase winding, so that the torque ripple and the speed control performance are greatly deteriorated. This paper can calculate the effective voltage and automatically apply the required advanced angle. By using the voltage equation, advanced angle control for stable operation is performed through setting the angle limiter.
